One broken girl with a dark past must find not only her voice, but the strength to move on.

After tragedy strikes Charlie’s family, she loses herself in her grief. With her family’s murderers on the loose and cops who refuse to listen, Charlie learns the hard way that she is alone in the world.

Three years pass, and still Charlie will not speak. Out of options and ideas, the judge sends her to a different foster home. Faced with a new town and a new life, Charlie must learn to live again. Surprisingly, she meets a group of friends that welcome her into their fold.

Of course, the past always has a way of coming back to haunt you, and Charlie is no exception. With the support from her new family and friends, she tries to find the answers the police couldn’t… or wouldn't, find.

The closer they get to the answers, the more dangerous it becomes for Charlie. Can she survive long enough to be truly happy? Or will the evasive murderers come back to finish the job?

*This book was previously published by the same name, but has since been rewritten with over 18k in additions and re-edited
**This is a reverse harem, ffmm young adult romance/mystery. The main character will not have to choose who she dates. There is some violence that readers may find triggering.

Read other books by this author in the future: yes
MC: Charlie, Abbi, Cole, Adam
SC: Danielle, Sophia, Alice, Trent, Detective Flynn

Actually I didn't want to read ya books anymore. But then I saw this book that a GR friend had reviewed. She thought it was very good and exceptional for the genre. So I read it. I also have to say that there were some things that were not so common for ya books: For one thing, there was a good backstory that was a common thread throughout the story which had changed Charlie's life. Then while getting to know the group was common as it gets, what was unusual was the final rh. The story was exciting and heartbreaking.

This was refreshing YA RH book. I rarely read contemporary RH books and I try to stay away from YA RH books altogether but there was something about the description of this book that called to me.

This book is ultimately about healing, acceptance and love. Our main MC, Charlie not only witnessed the brutal killing of her family but barely escaped with her life, sustaining severe damage to her vocal cords and esophagus leaving her unable to speak. Everyone in her small town pretty much abandons her including her so called best friend.

Charlie is moved to a foster home two hours away to a new small town, her new foster mother Sophia lost her husband a few years ago and they never had kids, I loved her right from the beginning.

When Charlie meets her new group of friends, I loved them right away, how they rallied around her giving her all that she needed to heal. The most refreshing part for me was how not all of them became part of her Harem, Trent was mature enough to know he couldn't handle that and was content to be one of her best friends.

A good RH if your not looking for sexy times, strictly healing, love and cuddles.

Eh.. so so

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

I wanted to love this book. I really did. The blurb sounded great and the fact that it was a rewrite promising more, I thought for sure it would win me over and give me all the feels.

Sadly it just didn’t. The storyline has so much promise, but it just didn’t hit the mark in so many aspects. There was no real development between the characters, it’s definitely a SLOW burn book, but I just didn’t feel the growing relationship between any of them.

This is just my opinion, not all books are for everyone and this one was just not the one for me.

If you’re looking for a book that has romance, action, thriller, at times this book can warm your heart and on the next chapter you can be feeling anxious waiting to hear what happens next, this book kept me captivated at all times and can’t wait to read the next book in the franchise!!

Enjoyable

I don't usually read YA, but I enjoyed this one. I liked the characters and really liked the hint of FF in there.

Ah ah. Nope. DNFing asap.
Too short for this whole story idea.
Too few pages and the scenes are still being wasted with side chafacters... I mean if it's going to be this short at least introduce the guys a bit earlier? Fast burn? Thank you.
Irony: the story with the guys is taking way too long (for a book this short) and the scenes are ending way too fast.
Is this a draft?
Also not into F/F but that is personal... :)

Sneaking out to a party saved her life but stole her voice. Now another lost soul in the foster system, Charlie has lost her best friend and is generally known as a freak. When her caseworker decides to send her to a new town for a fresh start, Charlie doesn't get her hopes up. However, her new foster mom seems to really want her, maybe even need her. And she finds her tribe, a group of self-named misfits who don't judge her for being a little broken. Just as Charlie starts to believe maybe she has found a home with people who won't walk away, her past catches to threaten her future once again.

This book wasn't bad but it wasn't particularly good either. It had some strengths. The initial concept was great. The violence, the trauma, the aftermath all made for a wonderful character backstory. Physical and mental trauma can create a rich character. Charlie's PTSD gave the author a lot of material to work with. Sophia was a fantastic character. Her trauma-informed approach to parenting was good. The Misfits were all likable. Even Flint and Charlie's caseworker were good characters. Flint, especially was a missed opportunity. His character could have been special. However... every single character would have benefitted from more depth. They each needed more fleshing out, more backstory, more insight, more time spent with them. The same could have been said for many aspects of the story as a whole. For example, the bullying at school. It never really escalated or got resolved, so it was pointless. The RH relationships. Again, interesting concept of a mixed-sex harem, however, this was more Charlie and Cole with supporting members Abby and Adam. Honestly, they didn't get much further than Trent and Alice. There are also definitely weaknesses. The ridiculous bad guys who spill all their secrets and then there's the court scene - ONE DAY and the next they come back for sentencing. This trial would have been months. Charlie's testimony and cross might have been more than one day. What happened to the jury deliberating? The verdict? Obviously, we didn't need the trial to be elaborately written but it did need to be mentioned. This came across even more ridiculous since such a big deal had been made of Sophia being a lawyer. The author is not familiar with the legal world. If that's the case, either don't write about a subject or research it first. A good critique partner could have added tremendously to this book.

Everything circles back

Charlie was just being a typical teen. Sneaking out to a party wasn't supposed to lead to anything worse than possibly being grounded. Instead she comes home to her family held hostage. The cops are called, but don't arrive in time. Her family is gone. So is her voice. Three years of bouncing through the foster system hasn't led to feelings of security. Imagine her surprise when a group at her new school claim her on day one. But will they want to keep the mute girl with nightmares and death threats?

Spoilers ahead.
So. I usually avoid YA like the plague. Especially RHYA because it just usually is OTT and the obligatory mean girls are trite. This was different. It has one major plot hole, but the story itself was otherwise fairly well laid out. The thing that drove the plot was this agency hunting her down. Why? She was a teen, ignored and mute. Searching for the papers in the storage facility would have made sense. Burning down the house, or her foster home in case she had stuff with her, sure. But going after an abused, orphaned, mute teen? They had to know that would bring all kinds of crap down on them. Trigger warnings for dark thoughts, suicide contemplation, a groping at a party (that they never mentioned getting revenge on or making sure he didn't do it to anyone else) and brief medical torture. The romance was YA. Nothing explicit, appropriate for older teens. The RH works only because the group has been friends since forever. They all have a crush, are open about communicating (something that many adult stories should emulate) and talk to each other about how it would affect their friendship before talking to her. I liked that friendship was accepted as a valid relationship, too, and it wasn't all romance driven. It was very well handled, the whole story. The plot moved, dialogue never floundered (which considering the mutism, was awesome), no more than 1 TSTL moment, and only 1 mean girl. I wish they would have learned ASL. Not even Sophia did. That was my only other disappointment.

This book seems to have earned a very mixed bag of reviews. Which surprised me, I was drawn in immediately to the story and read straight through till the end of the second book. It's one of the first stories I have read with FF in the harem. This was a nice surprise and added an interesting dynamic. I love how broken Charlie is. The trauma she experienced was both physical amd mental. I think the author showed a realistic path threw he triggers and how she was trying to cope with everything. I dont mind that the book was slow burn but I did miss some of the relationship discussions. Given the unique situation I would have thought they would have had a more in depth sit down about how to handle different situations. My only real complaint is how many bad things can happen to the same person. Like seriously Charlie is a magnet for bad shit. By the end it felt a bit unrealistic. But it still was an amazing duet to read.

Pretty good - 3.5 stars

I almost didn't read this book because I've tried reading this author before, both her solo books and her co-authored books, and I couldn't connect with the characters or the story.

However, I'm glad I took the chance. I liked the characters more than the story itself. I feel that both could have been more in-depth, or shown more than told, especially for the relationships in the book. Charlie and Cole are written very well, but Abby and Adam almost seem like an afterthought. The same goes for Alice, Trent, and Sophia.

There were a few grammatical errors, but they weren't to distracting.

I'm not sure I'll read this author again, but mainly because her writing style doesn't click with what I like in a story. Nevertheless, I suggest giving this book a chance if you like sweet, YA RH romance.

Wow!

This book held me captive from the very first moment I started reading. Charlie has been through it all and some. We go through the majority of the story with her being mute but we get to hear her inner thoughts throughout the whole thing. This book had suspense, friends to lovers, and a hea. This book was not spicy which the majority of the books I read are. However, I thoroughly enjoyed this book so much. I loved how everyone in the group immediately accepted Charlie and immediately became protective of her. I loved watching some friendships grow into romance. I also loved seeing how even though some in the group weren’t interested in a romantic relationship with her, they remained good friends. I also loved seeing Charlie’s growth and strength from beginning to end. I highly recommend this book to anyone.

I'm not sure where to even begin with this review. I've experienced sadness, elation, fear and an overwhelming sense of belonging just by reading this book.

The book is SLOOOOOOW Burn. Like turtle slow. But as its an YA book, I sort of expected it- do I wish there was more interaction between the characters? Of course but they're children so 🤷🏻‍♀️.

The storyline is unique and covers some hard-hitting topics such as adoption, murder, kidnapping and medical experimentation. It is well written with enough development between characters to keep me hooked until the next chapter.

Would thoroughly recommend if you like contemporary RH!

Pretty good

I was debating between giving this book 3 or 4 stars, but ultimately decided on 3. I did like this book, it just started to fall off somewhere for me. Maybe around 60%? There’s not really a specific thing I can point out, I just started to lose some of my interest by that point. Over all, I think this is a really cute, simple read about a strong girl overcoming a traumatic experience and finding a group of people that love and accept her unconditionally. Definitely good if you’re looking for a light read with a decent story. Maybe just needed more fluff.

I adored Charlie and her friends. This is a perfect YA RH novel. Charlie has been through so much in her life. Watching her face challenges, sometimes horrific ones, and overcome them holds high appeal. Her friends (both platonic and not) may jokingly call themselves the misfits, but really they just seem to care more about actual people than status and all the other stuff that typical teens do. They seem to actually SEE people as they are. This one gave me a big smile, and I could happily rec it to younger readers. Bonus points for showing a sweet FF combo in the poly relationship.

Not bad

The story was interesting and the FMC was well thought out, but everything else falls flat. There isn’t a lot of detail given about the other characters. Why are they the misfits? Why does Charlie even like them? There were a few connecting moments but nothing to explain any deep feelings. I also found it annoying that there was a time jump at almost every new chapter.

Overall it wasn’t a bad book. I don’t think I’ll pick up the second book because I wasn’t really connected with the characters.

WOW! What can I say? This is my first book from the author.

I really enjoyed the story. It was great to read a story that is RH without all the sexy scenes and a good story line. I love sexy scenes, but when it's 90% of the story then it gets old pretty quickly. This was so much different.

I loved the emotions and healing. The suspense and humor.

Very well written! Characters were believable and stayed consistent.

True misfits that just fits! Thank you for an awesome story!

Still love it

I read this before it was rewritten and after reading it with the added 18k I can safely say that I’m still in love with it. This was the first ever F/M/M/F book I read and it’s awesome. Being able to connect to a bisexual FMC was awesome since I’m bi too and seeing this relationship made me so happy. It’s one of the best stand alones I have ever read and tbh I wish it was a series but at the same time it’s awesome the way it is.

This book is great. It’s about a traumatized teen girl who actually takes awhile to get over her horrifying past. Moving to a new location helps more with her recovery. She makes friends with people who except her for being the way she is no questions asked. Her new foster mom understands about her loss as she has a loss also so they help heal each other. I’m not a fan of f/f but this was well written.

My eyes are so puffy!

I don’t think I’ve cried so much reading a book before. The number of times I cried before getting even halfway through is astonishing!
This was an amazing book. Charlie’s path to healing both physically and mentally was so powerful. I loved the evolution of her relationships with the people in her life.
I definitely recommend this book!

Be sure to have tissues handy though!

Raw

The heartache, feeling of being alone, forgotten, and ignored. The instances of people giving up and abandoning you because your struggles are inconvenient. The loss of hope for ever finding a family or even friends again. The guilt of survival when your entire world is ripped away. I absolutely love the raw emotion in this book.

I also love that the RH is bi; it just adds to the feeling of acceptance and love the h years for in the book.

The book had so much potential. I understood that the author wanna focus on the grief, and I thought it was a great approach, because the girl was put through a really tough time.
I don’t think it was explored that much, she just numbed everything.
The friendship was great but a bit shallow, I didn’t felt the strong connection between the characters, every subject was explored on the surface never digging deep enough.
The relationship with Sophia was beautiful and necessary for her healing.

Eh

While I did finish the book, I totally skimmed the last 10%. I skimmed a lot of the other book too, but the end I had no desire to keep reading.
It felt like they were I. Middle school instead of high school though, They felt very young, and had so many emotions. Like why was everyone constantly crying?? Literally every chapter they were crying. Everyone.

Good but I won’t ever read again.

Really good

Pretty good plot. Interesting story that I feel could have benefited from being developed a little bit more but still immensely enjoyable. I was looking for a gentle romance with out too much strife or smut (not my usual thing lol) and I'm glad I took a chance on this novel. I'm excited for the second book and am looking forward to diving into this new to me authors work.

Meh.

The first few chapters were really good, the idea, the backstory, having a mute lead, all really good, however, it doesn’t deliver. After the first few chapters it feels like a different book. A lot of time spent on stuff that doesn’t matter, on stuff that never comes up again, on side characters and not enough in relationship building, character development or plot.
Also some plot holes that bothered me.

I couldn't get into it.
Then, one of my MAJOR...HUGE... Pet peeves.. I find out that this book leans HEAVILY on the FF.
To me, having FF in a reverse harem, changes the dynamic and creates a POLYGAMOUS situation, NOT a reverse harem.
So, this book, in my eyes, was mislabeled.
Not that I have anything against ff, I just prefer my RH as, RH. Not poly.
If not for the extreme FF build up, I may have started to enjoy the book but, naw. I won't finish this book.....

Great read!

I read the story when it was first published and loved it. I noticed a few changes in the new version but nothing drastic. I really enjoyed rereading this story. We get to see the mc grow and heal. There is some light ff, which is not usually my thing but in this story I didn't mind it.

This story is not something I would normally read but I got so emotionally involved it's a bit ridiculous. I loved watching Charlie move through and get above her trauma. I especially loved how the focus was more on  Charlie and her foster mother rather than the love Interests. It felt realistic which made the story very enjoyable.

This is a nice and sweet YA RH novel with some dark elements thrown in for good measure. Enjoyed the storyline and the relationships within. Would perhaps have enjoyed the epilogue to go a bit further into the future to see how the future of the quadruple turned out. All around a sweet YA novel with no sex scenes so is a good opener to the RH lifestyle.
