USA Today and Amazon #1 Bestseller M. L. “Matt” Buchman started writing on a flight south from Japan to ride his bicycle across the Australian Outback. Just part of a solo around-the-world trip that ultimately launched his writing career.

From the very beginning, his powerful female heroines insisted on putting character first, then a great adventure. He’s since written over 60 action-adventure thrillers and military romantic suspense novels. And just for the fun of it: 100 short stories, and a fast-growing pile of read-by-author audiobooks.

Booklist says: 3x “Top 10 of the Year.” PW says: “Tom Clancy fans open to a strong female lead will clamor for more.” His fans say: “I want more now…of everything.” That his characters are even more insistent than his fans is a hoot.
As a 30-year project manager with a geophysics degree who has designed and built houses, flown and jumped out of planes, and solo-sailed a 50’ ketch, he is awed by what is possible. More at: www.mlbuchman.com.

This one was fun to read because there was so much going on. From the talk that Miranda, Holly and Mike had about Jeremy to how the team was sent out to the new crash, to the "VIP" who was in the crash, to how helpful a certain person was, someone who in the past wasn't helpful at all. Amid all of this we have Miranda "getting" things better at times and how her team would celebrate that, such a good thing. I also liked how they all helped Miranda with realizing that it was time for Jeremy to be in charge, how good that would be for him and that she would be ok with the change. I find I'm intrigued by the last part, the conversation between Andi and Miranda. It sort of comes out of left field, but yet not either. I do look forward to seeing what happens there.

One highlight of the book for me was members of Miranda's team putting her ex in his place in some very special ways. I loved that and it couldn't have happened to a more deserving person!

WHITE TOP is the eighth instalment in ML Buchman’s contemporary, adult MIRANDA CHASE political, technothriller focusing on NTSB investigator Miranda Chase and her team of former and current military members.

Told from several third person perspectives WHITE TOP follows in the aftermath of the crash of one of the newest White Top helicopters, Marine Two, and the loss would affect more than the fleet of Presidential fliers. Their last investigation complete, Miranda Chase and her team of NTSB investigators are called into to dissect the who, how and why, and the results point to human interference and not mechanical problems.

Meanwhile, Miranda Chase, a woman on the autism spectrum scale, is not quite willing to relinquish control but her second in command is ready to move forward with an investigation of his own.

As per ML Buchman’s style of writing as it pertains to Miranda Chase, the reader is pulled into the world of autism spectrum, watching (or reading) as Miranda struggles, not only with her own emotions, but recognizing small emotional nuances in others.Miranda’s last personal relationship failed in the face of Miranda’s inability to adjust or conform but a new relationship is on the horizon, one that has been developing for a very short time.

WHITE TOP is plentiful and replete with military and political jargon, especially as it applies and refers to the presidential aircraft and the mechanics within. ML Buchman pulls the reader into a suspense-filled, political thriller where the people at the top are targeted, and the person responsible may be someone close. The premise is intriguing and fascinating; the characters are resourceful, energetic and accomplished.

Marine One has a perfect safety record. But what would happen if that ended?

Why I started this book: Wanted something light and fun... and I was eager for more of Miranda's team.

Why I finished it: Interesting villains this time as the Vice President and his helicopter is attacked. More dangling threads for upcoming books, with no hint of when they will be published.

I’ve always found shopping in Walmart to be generally depressing, so I don’t go there often. But the Walmart scene in this story is enough to make me swear off the place for life! Possibly you will too, when you read the literally explosive details of a helicopter crashing into a Walmart and turning the entire huge store PLUS the surrounding parking lot into a gigantic fireball.

That the helicopter that crashed is Marine Two, carrying the Vice-President, is what pushes the crash into the path of the NTSB’s pre-eminent investigator, Miranda Chase, along with her crack team of top-notch experts into the investigation.

Not that she might not have been called in anyway, come to think of it, but Miranda and her team are the only NTSB team with the security clearance to deal with the potential causes and the political fallout of an entirely too successful attempt to sabotage one of the most secure aircraft in the nation’s entire arsenal.

And all of that is exactly what I read this series for. Miranda and her team are beyond excellent in their specialties, making every single book in this series an absolute delight of competence porn. There’s something absolutely fascinating about watching a bunch of interesting people do their complex jobs at the peak of pretty much everything.

The group that has coalesced around Miranda is one of the best teams it has ever been my pleasure to read about, and I mean that in both senses of the word “best”. Because they are all so damn good at their jobs – see above paragraph about competence porn.

But they are also a delight to read about and follow along with. Each member of the team has their own place, from Holly, the former Australian Special Forces operator who serves as the team’s muscle, to Mike, the human factors specialist, to Andi, the helicopter expert – much needed for particular crash, to Jeremy, the expert in all things geek and also Miranda’s “Mini-Me”.

That last bit turns out to be an important part of the story as far as the ongoing development of the characters is concerned. It’s getting to be time for Jeremy to leave the nest. It’s up to Miranda’s team, especially that human factors specialist, to help Miranda – who does not like change at all – to realize that it’s time to give Jeremy the opportunity to learn, grow and fail as a team leader so that he can be ready to become the Investigator in Charge (IIC) of his own team.

Which intersects both well and badly with the crash of Marine Two. It’s time for Jeremy to learn to lead, but this is not the crash he can “officially” lead. Too much is at stake and too much is at risk.

That’s where the other thing I love about this series comes in. In the Miranda Chase series, that the author has managed to out-intrigue one of the masters of the political intrigue genre, Tom Clancy. Buchman does it better in this story and this series, at least in part because it feels like he has an editor he actually listens to. (That is an opinion and I have no actual knowledge, but having read Clancy let’s say that the first books were great and then they got bloated. IMHO for what that’s worth.)

The setup for this story goes all the way back to the very first book in this awesome series, Drone. And it all pays off beautifully here, as the sabotage links back to players on the international stage who are in cahoots with power brokers in the U.S.

We follow along with Miranda as she and her team figure out how it was done, and we have a ringside seat as one of the prime movers and shakers of the whole series learns just how far her thirst for power has managed to lead her away from achieving her dream of it.

Escape Rating A+: The scenes of the two opening crashes, of which the Walmart crash was the second, are gruesome in their dispassionate recital of just how terrible and terrifying the loss of life was. (There were many times more dismemberments than in the book earlier this week.)

But this series is not about the gore, it’s about how the pattern of the crash – including the gore – allows Miranda and her team to figure out what happened. The purpose of that “figuring out” in normal life is to eliminate any design or mechanical factors that are capable of happening again – so they don’t.

In this particular instance, because this is a political thriller as much as it is anything else, the purpose of figuring out what happened is about assigning blame – and if possible, taking vengeance.

Although that part is not usually Miranda’s bailiwick. Not that she occasionally doesn’t end up in the thick of it anyway. But then, Miranda goes where the clues lead her, whether anyone wants her to go there or not.

In this case, those clues lead her, her team, her mentor and her president to a few inexorable conclusions. Conclusions that will certainly factor into where this series goes next. And I am so there for wherever that turns out to be. I’m just mad that the author is making me wait until next freaking year to find out!

But at least I got to see Miranda’s team punch the lights out of her douchecanoe ex-boyfriend, not once but twice. And he got tased again. The women on Miranda’s team stick up for her, for each other, and for the team and definitely for the win!

Buchman's best technothriller so far

The devious grabs for political power in Washington continue in this book while a foreign player exploits a governor's greed in order to commit an act of terrorism against the government on US soil. This act, in turn, smashes the political dreams of two of the individuals seeking power and simultaneously ramps up their anxiety: what will happen when their actions come to light?

Meanwhile, Miranda Chase and her team flex their investigative muscles, Miranda's genius is displayed yet again, and Jeremy is nudged toward learning how to lead an investigative team of his own.

I feel like Buchman has found his technothriller feet with this book. Like John Grisham, he lets the plot drive the story, not relying on foul language or obscene actions to hold the reader's attention. Unlike Grisham, the intrigue take place in Washington's political and air force worlds, rather than in a courtroom. I hope Buchman's writing trajectory takes him to a place where all readers can delve into his stories without feeling uncomfortable.

Warning: Like me, some readers will be uncomfortable with the turn the end of the book takes.

I was given an advance reader copy of this book. I am happy to provide this review.

I received an advanced reader copy for an honest review.

Each of the books in the series of 8 can be read standalone - but why would you? The whole series is so intriguing between the power grabs in Washington, D.C. (which in this case doesn't come to fruition for some characters), the military protocol and the quirks of the NTSB team, the books and this book in particular provides an insight into how our military and elected officials deal with everyday. Miranda Chase and her NTSB team are ever changing and growing as people - each becomes more with each book. With no spoilers in this review - this is my favorite of the series so far. I don't want to wait until 2022 for the next book.

Probably the best thing about the books is that this could happen in today's United States and would be a lot worse than the end result in the book. The interweaving stories in the book are realistic and pretty scary to think that this could happen - the realism really makes for a great story.

This book had two kinds of twists and turns: characters and plot. They started from Page 1 and lasted until the end. The characters change and mature (except maybe for Miranda's ex, but he deserves everything he gets and more). No plot spoilers, so I'll talk a little about the characters.

Jeremy finally realizes being an investigator is not all about the investigation, that the people count (in many ways). Taz might be less nervous about her place in the team(s). And maybe Andi has her PTSD under control. Some of the other series characters won't win in their pursuit of power, which satisfied me.

A thoroughly satisfying thriller. You don't need to read all the books in the series to enjoy this one—but you should!

I received a free advance copy of novel in exchange for an honest review. I enjoy Mr Buchman's writing including the Miranda Chase techno thrillers. However I had trouble getting into this one. I almost didn't finish reading the book because of the graphic violence and explicit gore at the beginning. Once I got into the story of Miranda Chase and her team investigating the helicopter crashes and what the team members could do both together and separately, I enjoyed it as much as always. Some character developments were surprising, but others were not. I now look forward to the next installment of the series.

I have been given a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Mr Buchman doesn’t disappoint with this thriller. Once I started I couldn’t put it down and now to wait for the next book!

The suspense and the ever changing and yet consistent manner of the characters of the NTSB team keeps the story going. I was kept on my toes wondering how the storyline was going to play out. The usual details of the craft and its intricacies are well thought as well as the failure points which causes the crash. It does not detract from the discovery of the political agenda and purpose behind crash. A great book!

M.L. Buchman's character building is incredible. Readers of this series have gotten to know the members of Miranda's team really well. In White Top, Miranda must face upcoming changes, and Jeremy must learn to lead a team of his own. As you can imagine, this is not easy for either of them (nor for me who wants to keep everyone together!), but people need to keep growing.

Bit of a surprise at the end, let's see where the next book goes..... Hopefully Buchman has plans to keep this series going, I've gotten rather attached to Miranda and her team!

Love Miranda, Love the team….

I think I like Miranda Chase more than 99% of all my all time favorite characters(even Gandalf). This series is one of the first where ASD is accurately portrayed, based on my experience raising a a son on the “spectrum”. I wish her sexual preferences were not a part of the story. I am not homophobic, misogynistic or any of the labels that so many people throw around today, I just did not find it added any benefit to the storyline. I will continue to enjoy this series and recommend it, but since
This is my first “less than 5 star review”
Out of all the series, and I felt I should explain why.

I received this book as an ARC and this is my review. I have read several Miranda Chase and her team’s NTSB investigation books and this one did not disappoint - I loved it! The author has detail knowledge and his characters are well-crafted. This story is one of his best and the plot has twists and turns throughout. I totally recommend this book to any reader who enjoys thrillers and wants to read a story so fast-paced and satisfying it begs to be read in one sitting.

It just keeps getting better and better! This series is addictive! I await the next one with lots of excitement.

Love Miranda. Never saw Miranda and Andie together. Clarissa ended up with her own tragic political career to the White House and the VP blowing up in her face. I love Drake and Roy’s relationship on such a personal level.
Good for Jeremy and Taz being able to go out on their own. It is possible for Marine 2 to be sabotaged. Why not Marine One? Is the CIA really working in America’s best interest?

Craving more

I hated to see this book end. Matt has done such a great job of bringing his characters to life that Miranda and her team have become like old friends as I read through this incredible series . That, and his vast knowledge of aviation and insight into today's complex political environment make for a can't put it down reading experience. I can't wait for his next installment. I'm also looking forward to playing the game invented by the team.

I received an ARC copy, so put my reading schedule ahead by a week. Great Miranda Chase story, more focused on character development than action. Follows seamlessly on path from Havoc. Slightly surprising tweek at the end but, if you've been reading previous books carefully, logical development. Only downside is next book not due out until 2022!

TRANSITION

A thrill ride packed with twists and surprises and the beginning of changes in the group dynamics.
White Top is a complex maze of a lot of threads that eventually turn into a completed pattern, into a disturbing outcome. It is an edge of your seat, not to be missed book. Highly recommend.

White Top, starts out with a bang, and continues throughout. I always enjoy reading the Miranda Chase series. The closeness that she has with the President and other higher ups is extra fun to read. All of the facts made it really easy to visualize. I'm excited to see what's next for Miranda and her team.

I like the parts where Miranda and her team are featured. I don’t enjoy the bits where we get to know and like some new characters only to have them die horribly in graphic detail a few pages later. Pretty sure this genre is not for me, but I like the main characters so much it’s hard to give them up!

Mostly superb, except far too little attention paid, by the characters and the author, to the scores of lost lives caused by the Walmart crash. The same complaint can be made about earlier books in this series.

I've read all the books in this series so it was easy to keep up with the characters. This book is my favorite so far. Good writing, good story and good characters. I feel like I know them. I especially like the humor throughout the story.
