I understand this is a silly complaint to make of the genre, but this story was frustratingly 'chinese'. it's clearly a huge aspect and driver of the plot, arguably a commentary, but growing up in a mixed culture made sitting through some scenes difficult.
its a lovely and angsty slice of life look at our characters navigating the twists and turns of society, culture, and themselves. beautifully written and heartbreaking. coming from an age gap relationship, the struggles, insecurities, and little pockets of happiness all hit so, so close to home.
