What do I say...
I loved this, Thirteen is awesome and just everything, but if I knew it was going to be a CLIFFHANGER I would have waited until part 2 was complete. I'm not a patient person.

Needless to say, how do I rate something that's not complete? So, I'm going with pleasure derived up until the stop point, aka end. And that's a 3.5 stars.

No one should expose their heart so easily for someone. Especially someone they hardly knew. It left them vulnerable.

So we didn't like Thirteen much in Seven but of course, there's so much more to him, well all the Others, when they weren't forced to awful things by Stone.
Part One picks right up from Seven escaping the helicopter crash. Nine has had his hand in manipulating situations so Chase, a forger, rescues Thirteen and new adventures and bad people are encountered. We learn more about the Others and their talents and weaknesses.
As you may already know Part One ends on a cliffhanger, but you're lucky if you pick up Part One now, Part Two has just been released so you won't have to sit on pins and needles waiting for Two to come out. [Author had some personal issues which caused the release to be delayed, no matter, it's here now]

June 7, 2017Why the hell did I read this before part two came out?! The author wasn't kidding around with that cliffhanger warning. There's no way I can write a coherent thought on this one until I read the rest. Just.. Fuuuck.
Re-read a year later, and this has stood the test of time for me. I'm still not here to write a coherent review, but this series is awesome. Not a standalone.

This is part 1 of 2 of the sequal to Seven.
I was really anticipating the story of Thirteen. Something about him grabbed me while I was reading Seven. Although all of the Others were abused in one way or another, Thirteen seemed to be the most vulnerable to me.
This book sets up what I hope to be the nitty gritty story line in part 2. Here, we get insight into Thirteen and learn although he's physically an adult, mentally and emotionally, he's more of a teenager. We (and his friends) are getting to know more of what he's capable of. Thirteen meets Quinn. It's a rocky road with a lot of angst.
Nine and Twenty-Three continue on in this story and we are introduced to a cold-hearted Bitch and a very clever pup.
As expected, it ends in a cliff-hanger.

Thirteen was a little difficult for me to get into. I read Seven the first book in The Others Project in September of 2013. At nearly three years later I probably should have reread the first book before jumping into the second book. I did however catch up and catch on to how Thirteen found himself in a place to cross paths with Quinn. Not many of the events from Seven are rehashed in the second instalment so I do highly recommend reading book one before book two and with the ending of book two I recommend reading book three immediately after. So buy and read all three books at the same time and due to the fact that by the time this review posts (or close to it) all three will be available for purchase it just makes sense to read them all at once.
Thirteen (the book (and the guy)) has been created in two parts. The first part of the book is mostly building a foundation for Thirteen and Quinn. There’s not a lot of romance between them in the sense of them interacting, getting to know one another, and inevitably falling in love. The other Other’s are working on helping Thirteen live outside of Sub Floor (the lab) and that means getting him connected to his Center (Quinn) which is what all this set up is about. The importance of a Center is covered completely in Seven but enough of it is described here to get you to fully understand the importance of one.
At the opening of Thirteen Quinn has one important objective in life. He must keep his employer happy to remain breathing. His talents as an artist led an unsavory person into his life and that person has forced his corporation. While Quinn would love to live his own life he does not have that option. His hand is forced even more when my favorite master manipulator (Nine) gets Quinn on the phone to help with just a small favor. The deeper Quinn goes down the rabbit hole that is the Others Project the more he wants out, out of it all.
Wilder has certainly created a complex world here. The sci fi portion of this series is intriguing and full of surprises. The story is told in a way where it all comes together and works for this world. The human element to the Others life is where the tragedy comes in. These men have been treated as nothing more than lab rats their whole lives. As a reader the only thing you want is for them to live a happy life. That is the number one reason I can’t wait to dive into the second part of Thirteen. I want to see him thrive as more than a scientific experiment. I want to get to his love story, his happily ever after.

As other reviews have noted, this is basically the first half of one quite long book, with a complete cliff-hanger ending.
I loved Seven and I enjoyed this, but I found the "science" exposition to be considerably more heavy-handed here than in the first book, and since I know literally nothing about physics I really couldn't appreciate it. Unfortunately, I also got pretty frustrated by Quinn's refusal to help/bond with Thirteen, though I admit the author laid the character work for why he would. But it meant that the book was a less satisfying read--the main characters spent a lot of time apart and much of the dialogue and focus was on why Quinn wanted nothing to do with his sorta soulmate. Upshot being that I ended up liking the parts with the Others more than I did those with Quinn. That being said, I really like the Others concept and I loved Thirteen, and I will definitely read the second half when it comes out.

Highly recommend a re-read for part II

I liked Seven better, but I think part of that was due to the fact that we didn't get enough time with Quinn and Thirteen together in this. Loved seeing Nine and Twenty-three. Quinn was in a shady business and stuck in a crappy situation. His resistance annoyed me, but I guess it was understandable.

Started this book in MAY, FFS. But after being warned of an extreme cliff-hanger ending, decided to hold off. Was injured and unable to type for about a week, and finally cracked under the pressure, and read the book.......Why, oh, why did I do it? (Bangs head on desk) Cliff-hanger isn't really adequate to describe the way this book ended. I went from mouth-hanging-open speechless, (much to my hubbie's delight) to stomping and shrieking, in under a minute. OMG, when is the next book going to be available??????
Excellent continuation to Seven; picks up right where the first book ended, and there's non-stop action from the word go. As I learned more about The Others, it is glaringly apparent that these poor souls are severely damaged, thanks to the evil whims of a mad man. Although gifted and extremely intelligent, some of the lab-created test-subjects are like children, attempting to survive in world that is a million miles from what they've come to accept as normal. Thirteen may be the least prepared to function in society; but even after the horrors he was forced to perform, he retains a childlike innocence and a purity of soul that brought me to tears.
When is the next book being released?........?

I enjoyed this book. I won't lie. I had a little difficulty following some of the science but liked the story. Nine engineers Quinn's life so it will intersect with Thirteen's. Quinn is a center and Thirteen needs that.
I went into this book knowing its part 1, that it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger and that book 2 wasn't out yet but it was still really good and I can't wait to see how the book developes.

Still a very good and imaginative world. Still horrific, except now it's less the medical torture type, and more the memories and freakin' evil, sociopathic mob-like folk. And a new paranormal disaster to deal with.
I still whole-heartedly ADORE Thirteen, and sympathize greatly with all the other Others...
But Quinn is a fucking annoying guy. He is nonsensical. He pines for someone who entrapped him so that she could leave and escape their boss, languishes in his unhappiness, blames everyone else for things and unleashes his temper on them, refuses to think about or deal with his attraction to Thirteen, and is cruel to Thirteen, who does not deserve that shit. No way, no how, not in the least, not even a smidge. Thirteen has been abused all of his life, is emotionally immature, and fully submissive, and I cannot, will not, deal with his love interest being a stupid, mean asshole to him. I won't do it. If Quinn doesn't change his attitude completely and quickly in the next book, I won't ever like him.
And that would be hugely disappointing since I love everything else about this series.

I've had a string of 3 star reads lately, so it's lovely to have one so much closer to a 5. When the author says at the intro that you should have the next book ready read right after finishing this, he's not kidding! The last two paragraphs nearly had me hyperventilating, and I hope to be a good portion into Thirteen: Book Two before I fall asleep tonight. Aside from a few homonym problems and clearly incorrect words (plutonic relationships?!), it's an excellent follow up to Seven. I adore Zero, but most of the Others here kinda break my heart -- Thirteen, Five, Twenty Three, Nine...and Quinn, too. Gotta get back to reading Part Two in hopes of some sort of HEA!

I am soooo glad I wasn’t holding my Kindle when I got to the final page of Thirteen: Part One. That ending left me wanting to scream in frustration because I don’t know what’s going on!!! Can anyone be trusted?!?!? Okay, I’m being a bit melodramatic here because while it is a cliffhanger and it certainly left me wondering what the heck Nine has planned for Thirteen and Quinn, I knew this was part one of Thirteen’s two-part story. I just wasn’t ready for it to stop when it did. Or where it did. Or how it did. ARGHHHH!!!!
Even though Seven and Chase do not appear in Thirteen: Part One, it is imperative that you read Seven first. Far too much transpires in book one for the author to be able to provide a neat little summary of events for a new reader to start reading the series at book two. So if you haven’t read Seven, read it first and stop reading this review because I’ll pretty much have to reveal spoilers for that book when discussing Thirteen: Part One. At the end of Seven, Thirteen was in the helicopter that crashed, but the news report only accounted for three of the four passengers. So Thirteen’s fate was unknown. Within the first chapter of this book, however, we learn that he did not die in the crash, but he certainly did not make it out of the helicopter unscathed. As we find out how he was able to survive the crash, we learn more about the breadth of Thirteen’s powers and that Stone’s reach extends beyond the grave because of what else is triggered when Thirteen’s abilities expand. Fortunately for Thirteen, he almost literally falls into the lap of his center, Quinn, and despite the crap life he’s been leading, Quinn is unable to resist helping the severely injured Thirteen. As for Quinn, he “meets” Nine before he rescues Thirteen, finds himself attracted to a man for the first time in his life, is disgusted with himself because Thirteen looks like a minor (he isn’t), and harbors thoughts of selling Thirteen to Talia in order to get out of her “employ” (only for a minute though). Making matters worse, people in Quinn’s life learn who Thirteen is and decide to “acquire” him from Quinn, at the same time that Thirteen is being stalked by an unknown entity that threatens the safety of humans and Others alike. Sound confusing? It’s really not. Wilder weaves all these threads, and then some, into one heck of story that I couldn’t put down.
I found Thirteen: Part One to be a great combination of action, suspense, heartbreak, and romance as Quinn is torn between helping Thirteen and fighting the attraction he has for the young man. With all that they encounter, simply surviving is proving more difficult than Quinn expected. Quinn’s continued resistance of the connection between him and Thirteen may prove more than fatal as it’s not only making Thirteen weak physically, but it also seems to be making him more vulnerable to the entity’s influence. As more is revealed, I find myself in even greater awe of Nine; it’s obvious that he has been making plans for years to secure the freedom of the Others, even if it’s looking more and more like he won’t survive to enjoy it (I fear tissues will be needed soon). I realize that my review probably seems a bit scattered, but there are so many potential spoilers that I’m trying to avoid that my thoughts aren’t as cohesive as normal. Suffice it to say, I enjoyed the ever loving heck out of Thirteen: Part One and cannot wait to get my hands on Thirteen: Part Two, and I really, really hope that Wilder has more books planned for the series because I’d love to see more of the Others find happiness – even if it’s not a smooth journey getting there.

Still held up after a reread. So excited to finally read the sequel!

4.5 Stars - I want to start by saying how much I am enjoying this series!! It is imaginative, fast paced and intricate. That being said, heed the author’s warning at the beginning of 13 and don’t read it if you don’t like cliff-hangers…at least not yet! She says the second part of 13 was to be out four weeks after this installment but it isn’t out yet. I suggest you wait and read 7 in the meantime to refresh your memory as so much goes on in that book that impacts this one. It had been awhile since I read 7 in January, and I have read so many other books in that time that some of the details were fuzzy for me and I was a little lost at times trying to remember what had happened.
Thirteen is different than he was in book 1. Almost like a newborn as he is missing much of his memory. Quinn is quite the interesting character. He has had a hard life and yet still has such a kind heart when it comes down to it. Things between them are strained and I ached for Thirteen.
Conspiracies are everywhere and the danger is great for all the Others. I enjoyed the thrill ride and was left wanting more with a twist I didn’t see coming. I can’t wait for the next book, though I think I might read 7 again while I do. Adrienne Wilder is quite the storyteller!

It had been awhile since I read 7 in January, and I have read so many other books in that time that some of the details were fuzzy for me and I was a little lost at times trying to remember what had happened.
Thirteen is different than he was in book 1. Almost like a newborn as he is missing much of his memory. Quinn is quite the interesting character. He has had a hard life and yet still has such a kind heart when it comes down to it. Things between them are strained and I ached for Thirteen.
Conspiracies are everywhere and the danger is great for all the Others. I enjoyed the thrill ride and was left wanting more with a twist I didn’t see coming. I can’t wait for the next book, though I think I might read 7 again while I do. Adrienne Wilder is quite the storyteller!

It's a 3.5 - 4....
So hard to rate when you know it's only half the story. It's different than a book with a sequel as it can't stand on it's own. Quinn spends a lot of time being annoying. I mean, I get it, he's a sceptic and hates his lack of control of his life, but just when he's on the right path the story stops. Not long to wait though! Thank goodness.
I love the Others. Nine is up to his same curious shenenigans. We spend lots of time with Thirteen, Five and Twenty-three and I love all of them. We meet Zero who is awesome. I really can't get enough of these curious tortured souls. And then there's Quinn who is a bit of a buzz kill. Here's hoping he gets to redeem himself!

OK, I totally missed that this was a Pt. I, so the cliffhanger caught me by surprise. This book is called Thirteen, but it seemed to me that Thirteen plays a minor and not so interesting role. I hope that changes in the Part II. Other numbers we are familiar with - including Nine and Twenty-Three are prominent. It's been a long time since I read Seven, so the background of the Others Project was a little fuzzy for me. It made it hard to follow the story arc at times. Hopefully there won't be as long of a wait until the next book.

I enjoyed that the story picked up where it left off in Seven. We get a different perspective on Thirteen and meet some new Others as well. I love Zero. For those not liking cliffhangers, well this is a big one. That said, I can't wait to see where Part two takes us.

I liked the book, despite the cliffy, but I didn't like Quinn much until near the end so i'm going to wait for the next part before judging him. I just hope I don't have to wait another 3 years for the next book.

Confusing
I love Adrienne Wilder. I really, really do. And book 1, Seven, was epic. But this was.....confusing. Because the characters were a little inconsistent. In the same scene, their behaviors were inconsistent. One moment they’re arguing one point then further down, in the same scene/location/time, they contradict themselves and argued a completely different point. It gave me whiplash because it didn’t make sense.
And I did NOT like Quinn very much. I can understand falling in love and heart break. I can even understand why some people can’t let it go. But this was absurd. I can also understand being confused of one’s sexuality and being in denial but...omg, I just wanted to punch Quinn and bury him in the backyard and not because he was written so well that it’s a compliment to the author that you hate the villain. Because the problem is, he’s not the villain!!
Also, Nine... I know he was made to look like he was playing both sides. But frankly, it wasn’t portrayed very well. He just came off as an ass.
I’m frustrated and let down because Adrienne Wilder is an awesome writer. I can’t get over the plot holes and inconsistent characters because I expected more from this awesome author. So I’m disappointed. Because I hated almost all of the characters except Thirteen. Argh.....

I know that saying this one is insta love and slow burn at the same time doesn't make sense, but it's insta love for thirteen and very very slow burn for Quinn.
This one was harder for me. My heart broke for Thirteen at times, but I just don't know if we should forget that he is a mass murderer. He did it on orders, he stopped as soon as he understood what he was doing, but he was a remorseless killer. We never see him broken up about what he has done.
This second book also had a lot more sex scenes and none of them felt totally consensual. It left me feeling icky about the whole thing. Not to mention Quinn's constant rejection of Thirteen.
The mob aspect is also not something I'm into.

It was ok....a good solid plot, lots of action...what I don't like though is that 13 starts to act more and more like a puberty kid. I knooooow he is suppose to be one, but it's annoying...and it starts to drag on my nerves. While he was a strong character in the first book, with own personality (dangerous, naive, stubborn), he is shy, horny and week in this one....actually he doesn't do anything in this book.

This is part one of The Others Prone t book two
This was a interesting read I started this series on th e second book of this series I have too go back the the beginning there's a lot that I'm not understanding . But I still liked this book there are a lot of players that I don't know about and the storyline is very complicated but as a said I like this . Looking forward to the second part of this book hopefully I will understand this a little better .

June 15, 2020Am I enjoying the story? Yes. Does it need to be read after "Seven"? Yes. Would it be enjoyable as a standalone? No. There's too much back story from the book "Seven" necessary to really get into the story here, and then it ends on an undisclosed cliffhanger - which I am HUGELY not a fan of. Luckily for me, I found it after the series was already complete, so will with hold my star rating until I can finish the actual story with the next book.

I love you, Adrienne Wilder, but I could not stand reading the second part, not because it was awful--everything you write is fucking amazing--but this book has been a vast land filled with minefields for me. Too many triggers. Many of them are too personal to talk about. So I'm DNF-ing the second part. I'm sorry. I feel like I've failed you.
