That title might be misleading without context so here it is: I read the first book of this series and I found it somewhat lacking (I rated it 3 stars so it wasn't horrible) but this one was better. And if you're surprised that I went on to read this second book, you're not the only one but if I've learned something it's that sometimes giving something a second chance pays off and it should go without saying that this is one of those times.
I enjoyed this book, the pacing was good and the action/plot was interesting. My complaint with the first book was Tobin he's also in this one (and in this one he's growing on me a little more) what really made this book better is what I hinted at in the title: Q. He is a protagonist that I instantly liked and here's a quote that sums up why: “You can cast spells,” Tobin asked as his eyebrow rose, and his head nodded slightly with an approving motion. “I'm hungry,” Q replied. “Mr. Jacob asked you a question,” Victoria said. “No. Mr. Jacob invited me to a meal, and I accepted that,” Q pointed out.” Come on, that guy doesn't pull you in? However I suppose I have to say that in some ways Q's even more ruthless than Tobin (seeing as Q could make Tobin throw up a little in his mouth from watching something he did) however what made the difference to me is that in Q I think there's real compassion unlike in Tobin in whom it struck me as rehearsed but as I said in my review of the first book that could be my subjectivity.
Another bit of praise I have for this is the introduction then use of Nurmat which was very clever. Oh, and *that ending* just wow, the last book left me so-so on reading on but this one not only left me with a knowing smirk but also with the itch for the third book. As for cons I have to say that this one has nothing major for me to comment on it just wasn't so great to merit 5 stars (or great at all really as the 4 it gets is more earned in comparison to the first book).
Overall I liked this book a lot more than the previous one (which doesn't happen often with sequels) and as such I would obviously recommend this one more than the previous one (and on that note I'll add that I don't think you necessarily have to have read the first book to understand this one with the exception that you'll be like Q in his ignorance of why protecting Madame Lee was... to borrow Seren's word 'naive'). If you like fantasy, action and magic and aren't put off by killing or sex then you'll probably like this one.
I loved "Witches And Reapers"; it was a well-written, engaging, and creative fantasy novel. "The Reaper's Apprentice" is just as good as "Witches And Reapers". But, it expands on the world found in "Witches And Reapers", while also telling a great story that remains captivating and enthralling throughout!
If you enjoyed "Witches And Reapers", then you'll enjoy "The Reaper's Apprentice"!
I was captivated by Kai Smith Chosen #1 Book that I had to read the second one. Always a good writer and I am now a fan of them. This book has not disappoint and I highly recommend! Now on to the third book
