Seasons Quartet #1

Winter's Knight

Rate this book
A magical love story is waiting for you…

In an enchanted land of lady knights and deep magic, there lives a woman who does not want to be queen. Her name is Winter, and her quiet life is upended when her sister abdicates the throne. The throne cannot remain empty. Winter must be queen. But Winter would give anything not to be.

Since Winter’s sister fled in a hurry, she left her guardian knight behind. Her name is Alia, and her life is about to be upended, too, because when she and Winter meet for the first time, sparks fly and catch fire, and Winter’s heart begins to melt.

A royal assasination might be on the horizon, though Winter never wanted the throne in the first place. And now she’s falling in love with her sister’s protector. In a magical, snowy land full of strong women, anything is possible. Including true love.

Bridget Essex’s beloved Knight Legends series gets a new chapter in this, the first romance of the Seasons Quartet.

My name is Bridget Essex, and I write about werewolves, vampires and lady knights; about two strong, courageous women who fall deeply in love with one another, living love stories that transcend time. I'm married to the love of my life, author Natalie Vivien.

I'm best known for my Knight Legends series, stories about women knights, real world hi-jinks and love stories that are out of this world. My Sullivan Vampire novellas are a popular series lauded as "TWILIGHT for women who love women," and I have several other series and stand-alone novellas, and I'm always putting out something new. Sort of a spin-off of Bridget Essex Knight Legends series. Set in the same world but in a new kingdom, but still lots of sapphic love abounding! The authors note at the beginning states this will be the first in a four seasons type of theme, this one being set in a Winter wonderland, of Ice and Snow, with Queen lineages that can control the winter season and it's weather patterns. We get some tiny glimpses into the other possible lands and seasons to come.

It's a really unique a fascinating concept, but very different in tone from the 5 Knight Legend books. Although that same charm is there, the overall feeling is very new and different, but still captivating!

I felt for Winter as the reluctant Queen, who has arrived to take over for her Sister Queen Crystal, who had decided to abdicate! Her sisters knight protector and bodyguard, Alia, is a delight. Warm and honourable, chivalrous and has a heart for animals. She has herself a menagerie of foundlings she takes care of so beautifully.

The prose is very lyrical and beautiful, too. Moreso than I remember from the previous books, again setting it apart in the best ways. Winter and Alia's attraction is sweet and delightful. Maybe a tiny bit quick, but I really can't complain since they are so lovely together.

Just a feel good fantasy read available on Kindle Unlimited! Highly Recommend!

My heart!

I absolutely needed this book, exactly when it appeared. 2020 has been so rough, so grim and lonely and scary for so many.

It beautiful, adventurous, romantic and lighthearted in a way I didnt know I needed. For the couple hours it took me, I was completely immersed and pulled away from the harsh realities of the world. I was in a magical winter wonderland with magical creatures, best friends, roaring fires and if course lady knights!

Left me with a smile and warm feels in my heart...

This is a story about a young woman named Winter who didn't want to be queen and was thrust into that role by an insidious scheme of political intrigue. Ah, but for the Alia, the knight from the Summerlands, who melts her 'this is how I live my life' rules and gives her hope to fight for the kingdom loved by Winter's mother.
A beautiful well-written story. I've enjoyed all the Knight stories by Bridget Essex.
I can't share too much without spoiling the story. So, if you enjoy women who rule and women who are knights, read this and be amazed.

Very entertaining

This is the first book I’ve read by this author. I really liked it very much. It is very imaginative and I loved the way the flora and fauna were treasured and revered. I feel the same way about animals and nature. Great read. I highly recommend.

I would have thought this was the first book this author wrote. Very repetitive, contradicting and meandering. Really needed a thesaurus, and more editing.

Writing style not at all for me.

I did like all the different types of animals and would love the cabin.

There is not a single male in this book; no mention of fathers. Even the animals are all female. How is anything conceived?!

And this was annoying:
This is what Winter saw:
And she would have savored it, too, had this not happened:
So this is what she said:
And that was this:

Winter's story might have ended differently that night.

Winter kissed her on the mouth. She leaned forward, closed her eyes, and let herself settle into the kiss like it was something she knew how to do. And Winter did know how to kiss. She quite enjoyed it.

I have never been so bored during a sex scene (partial scene anyway). Couldn't keep my focus on it at all and didn't care when I was interrupted.

I swear Essex is obsessed with seeds. Once the seed was planted it kept going on and on and on and on...

The side bit with goddesses (both of them) were rather pointless.

Winter's blush traveled down her cheeks, down her neck, over the pale curve of throat and breastbone, until the blush reached her breasts, rouging them sweetly.
Uh, what...?

"Just drive."
Was very out of place.

I could go on...

I enjoyed this book like I did the other books of Bridget Essex, but I don't think it was as good as the former books. It's an adventure story with a beautiful love story woven in it. I just wished she took a few more chapters in ending her stories. It felt a bit rushed to me, and certain things mentioned in the book, but never really followed up on.

Best of the best!

I have loved all of Bridge's books but this is the best one of all. I know Bridget to be a kind hearted wonderful woman who throws herself into whatever she does and thus book has the feeling that she put her whole self into this. There are several separate stories within this major story that are fantastic.
I could feel the affection between the uneven stations of the two women as being Bridget pouring her heart and soul into it as well as the closeness of the sisters.
I could go on and on but you must read this to feel the growth and love of the main character.

I don't want this job!?

Winter is the sister to the Queen who unbeknownst to anyone is secreted away with the queen lover. Between Knight Alia who was the Queen's and Winter they must rely on each other to solve the mystery of the lost Queen and Alia must not to melt Winter's heart or can it? Enjoy!

Love this Author!

This was a great story. I loved the characters, storyline, and all the animals. Had my favorite things in a story. Love, Knights, and animals. It does not get any better than that. If you have never read this author then you have missed out on some great stories. Get her books and leave your reviews! She is great!

A delightful holiday read!

Sometimes you just need something good and warm and full of love, where you know the characters will have a happy ending, and you can set down the book feeling that same warmth imparted to you. This is a book like that.

I liked it. I didn't love the main character, but I did love Alia's character and how her character appeared to be what every good Lady Knight is supposed to be. This is a bit darker than some of the other stories, but it still has the romance and other-worldly, fantastical elements to it.

A different but wonderful world

I love the imaginary world of knights and was pleasantly surprised that this involved knights but was slightly different than the others. The wonderful love story here remains true to the statement that love conquers all!

Cute

This was a good read! This is the first bookish e read from this author. I am not really a fan of knights, this book didn’t really change my mind about that.

Story lacks maturity and depth. It’s slow and simple... worlds that are magical and new shouldn’t be simple. Also, Alia lives in a cabin-barn. There’s nothing magical or sexy or refined about that.

Lady knights in a magical fairy tale romance!

Winter’s Knight has many classic fairy tale elements woven together to tell an engaging story of love, mystery, magic and victory. I loved the tender cottage interlude: sheltering from the storm in domestic calm, sharing memories of past winter solstices and exploring their deep soul connection. Bridget’s adventures are exciting and they tug at my heart and bring tears to my eyes.
