Annette Marie is the best-selling author of over thirty books, including the expansive urban fantasy series The Guild Codex, epic urban fantasy series Steel & Stone, and romantic fantasy trilogy Red Winter.
A 2015 Goodreads Choice Awards Finalist in Fantasy and an Amazon Charts Bestseller, Annette has sold over 2 million books. Her books have been translated into French, German, Polish, Ukrainian, and Russian, with readers coming back again and again for her addictive blend of fast-paced adventure, tantalizing forbidden romance, and unforgettable characters.
Annette lives in the frozen winter wasteland of Alberta, Canada (okay, it’s not quite that bad) with her husband and their furry minions of darkness. When not writing, she can be found elbow-deep in her garden or an art project while blissfully ignoring all adult responsibilities.
Update: I read this during my lunch break and this was fun! So funny and lighthearted, with a few extra scenes to get the heartstrings pulled. The artist outdid herself with this comic!
I don't have enough words to describe how much I love Annette Marie and her Guild Codex series, so it'll be no surprise to anyone that I was so excited to be receiving this for Christmas (thank you Charlotte my love and rip your bank account). Most authors, they write short novellas, short stories about their series but Ms Marie sure stepped things up a notch with a comic collection. How cool is that?!
I absolutely love the art in this (thank you Ashleigh Zenardi), seeing my fav characters actually come to life is just a wonderful experience.
The only reason this isn't getting 5 stars is because 1. I read this series at the beginning of the year so I don't remember everything all that well lmao and 2. it was all random lil tidbits spanning however many books and added little extras, which is cool, don't get me wrong, but it just feels kinda disjointed.
Saying that, still love this and absolutely cannot WAIT for the webseries!!!
So this comic collection is a bit different from other comic/graphic novel additions to favorite series in that it isn't so much a story with a plot, but just a collection of short scenes that wouldn't make sense without the context of the novels. Which is made pretty clear from the description and I knew before I bought it, so I'm not complaining.
The best way to describe it is that it's like reading a series, looking for fanart online, and finding a fan-artist who's done short comic-style art of favorite scenes or little headcanons. (Which is pretty much exactly what this is... just with the author's stamp of approval and bound up in print instead of on tumblr or elsewhere online.)
It felt a little weird to spend money on something like that, tbh. But I guess that just makes you realize how spoiled we are by all of the fanartists sharing this kind of art for free online. (Well, for some fandoms we are spoiled, for others there's sadly no fanart to be found.) I did like the art in this and there are all sorts of funny/cute little details in here (things like Robin's phone case has cookies on it, for example). It's really more of a collector's item. I like my collections to be complete, so I'm happy I was able to add this to it.
If you've read this and want more, there's always The Guild Codex WEBTOON adaptation. (Only a few chapters so far, but I love starting my Friday with the weekly update. Great way to start the last day before it's finally the weekend!)
This comic collection was the sweetest companion to the Guild Codex world. I loved the artwork and the snippets of scenes from the series. I liked seeing new scenes as well. Overall, I couldn't be happier with this book. If you are a hardcore Guild Codex fan then you need this book in your life.
I finally decided it was time for me to return to the Guild Codex series after 4 years away from it, and I figured there would be no better quick recap than this!
I think the art is pretty good. Although it is a bit stiff in some areas, I really think Zanardi captured my mental images of each character perfectly, even if her renderings weren't always so natural looking.
It was a little funny how it was just a bunch of 1- or 2-page comics, would have liked some that were a bit longer than that, but that doesn't bring the collection down that much. I'll definitely be checking out Zanardi's Webtoon series after this, see if her renderings have gotten a little more fluid.
That being said, this was a great time and definitely reminded me very well what I read of the series 4 years ago to set me up for success in finishing the final Spellbound book and finally moving on to Warped and Unveiled. I can't wait!
3.5ish stars? It's a hard one to rate This was fun and I am glad I went and got myself a signed copy. But it wasn't quite as amazing as I hoped. It really is just random scenes thrown in. Some of these were so neat to see played out in artwork, like Tori and her throwing of the margarita for example. There was just less cohesion than I hoped for and it will only really make sense to those who have read the books. I'm also not a fan of how Ezra is drawn nor really the Ghost either. I do think Robin, Amelia and Zylas are perfect though.
This is a great companion to Annette Marie’s Guild Codex books/world. It was fun to see at visual representation of my favorite characters. It was light hearted, colorful and had a bunch of fun surprises for fans. The only thing I wish for with this is that there will be more. There is so much to explore and seeing it definitely enhances my experience when I read new books in the series or reread my favorites stories. It was a fast read and definitely something I will revisit regularly.
Getting this signed first edition comic in the mail was a little like Christmas!
What started out as fan art in Annette Marie's reader FB group, became a commissioned comic of key moments and exclusive outtakes from the Guild Codex Universe! And now the entire GC story arc will be on Webtoons Canvas!
Ashleigh captured every moment perfectly, in beautiful color! Gah! Just over the moon at all these developments.
The artwork was beautiful and really captured the characters in the Guild Codex! This was so much fun to read and I’m hoping something like this will come out for other books in and out of the series.
I want to preface this by saying I am NOT a comic or graphic novel reader. I ordered this because I am obsessed with the Guild Codex universe. And honestly, I loved it. It is full of moments that I recognized and a few new scenes. This has me even more excited for the Webtoon series!
I loved this comic… the drawings are amazing and I visualised them all while having a little chuckle to myself.. a really great comic that’s is a must have on your Annette shelf.
I absolutely loved this!! It quickly brought me back to the Codex world and dove right into all my favorite scenes. I will be reading this over and over again.
This is a short read and very fun. The drawings are awesome, and it's fun to see key moments from the Guild Codex world and outside the books scenes. Glad I have this for my collection.
It was not easy to just read this all in one-sitting, but I managed it! This is definitely for those who have already finished reading both Guild Codex: Spellbound and Guild Codex: Demonized in their entirety, as there are spoilers! There are so many cute and funny and sweet moments captured in these short 90 pages, many of which appeared in the Guild Codex series, but quite a few which never quite made it into the books. Ashleigh’s art is so much fun, she really does a great job capturing everyone – human, fae, mythic, and demon – with both obvious body language and more subtle in the angle of an eye or the tilt of a lip. The memorable scenes from the books which appear here are sublime, and the bonus scenes pure perfection all around. This is definitely one to revisit over and over for the pure joy of it.
