Bloodshed and Crime in the West

Rate this book
Deputy Travis Conway is a lionhearted man who has enjoyed a peaceful life in Phoenix, in the heart of the Arizona territory. Despite his young age and inexperience, his ability with a gun is unmatched. No one could have prepared him, though, for the shocking death of the town's mayor under mysterious circumstances. The suspicious signs of a possible murder, rather than an inevitable accident, make him determined to use all of his skills and unravel the enigma of the terrible crime. Little does he know that the main suspects have been right before his eyes all along... What is he willing to risk in order to protect the town from atrocity and corruption?

Rumors about the mayor's murder spread in town like wildfire and Travis's investigation leads him down an unexpected and dangerous path. After a peculiar turn of events, he will start to suspect the sheriff, as he seems too eager to cover up the whole affair and run for the empty mayoral office. As if things weren't complicated enough, the sheriff's daughter, Dora Lund, is willing to join forces with Travis for the greater good of the town. Will their investigation destroy her trust in her father just as it destroyed Travis's trust in the sheriff?

Even though Travis and Dora meet under the worst variety of circumstances, they find encouragement in the strong feelings that grow between them. However, as long as the murderer is still out there, they cannot let themselves have a chance at love. Will Travis and Dora capture one of the most wanted criminals in the history of Phoenix? Or will forces of corruption overtake them at long last?

An action-packed story, featuring complex and fascinating characters, and twists and turns that will take your breath away. A must-read for fans of Western action and romance.

"Bloodshed and Crime in the West" is a historical adventure novel of approximately 60,000 words. No cliffhangers, only pure unadulterated action.

This book was just okay. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. I thought it was missing some elements that I look for in books like this. I like some grit, a lawman that isn't as whipped as Horace Lund, a strong sense of right and wrong that isn't necessarily biblical, and I want some passion and not in the romantic sense. I want all the lawmen to be strong, resilient but not to the point where they are wishy-washy, and I want to feel their love and dedication to the women in their lives. This missed on all of those points.

The main characters are Sheriff Horace Lund and Deputy Travis Conway. Dora Lund is Horace's daughter and Travis's love interest. Martha Lund is Horace's wife and Dora's mother and is loony tunes. There are other secondary characters, of course, including a preacher, a doctor, and some nefarious souls. The most believable character was Zeek Odell. He leaped off the screen. The others? Not so much. I thought Travis was smart in an offbeat sort of way, but he wasn't overly clever and the way he let Dora interfere in a murder investigation was unheard of for the time. Not impossible. Just not believable. As for Dora, I couldn't decide if she was dumb or daring. It was a mix of both, I guess. Regardless, I thought she was a necessary pain in the lower extremities. If there was to be a romance, not that there was much of one, she had to be there.

The story started out with the murder of the mayor of Phoenix in the Arizona Territory. It was a great hook, but as the story progressed and Horace lost the part of his anatomy that made him a man, Travis was thinking too much, and Martha was rattling off Bible verses as if she'd never read another book in her life and knew every word in the Bible, the story flatlined. I got tired of Dora and her stupid moves. I got tired of Travis thinking and not acting. I got tired of Horace feeling sorry for himself. The most exciting part of the book after the murder of the mayor was when the murderer was caught.

Not that it matters, but I thought Dora's speech at the trial was dull and unbelievable. There were a few parts of this book that I thought were unbelievable, but to say anything more about them would mean spoilers.

Maybe this would've been better if Martha quoted the King James Version of the Bible, since the more modern versions with easier language weren't around at the time this story would've taken place. There are pages and pages of scripture quoted. Obviously, the author knows the Bible and put it to work in the story. I have nothing against that. I just wish the language had been more realistic. It may have made her a more real character.

The book is an easy read without a whole lot of tension. The romance is pretty much nonexistent and not worth mentioning in the blurb. I read a lot of romances, especially historical romances. I was looking for something new and exciting. This was new and it was different. It just wasn't for me. I don't think I was the target audience.

An exceptionally entertaining revelation of realistically renditions of old western folklore stories

As always, another five star series of unending gunfighting excursions, as the Sheriff Horace, his daughter Dora, and his Deputy Travis, use their expertise in subduing those responsible for their wrongful misdeeds! This compassionately heartwarming series of ongoing adventures will definitely stimulate you undivided attention from beginning to end!
Outstanding storylines throughout this compelling western masterpiece, as Sheriff Horace, and his Deputy Travis use their commanding expertise in subduing those responsible for their ongoing injustice! Too, the Author's outstandingly descriptive characters were effectively chosen for their compelling assignments from beginning to end!
Definitely recommend this compassionately motivated story to all readers, but especially especially to you western addicted fanatics, who enjoy riding along with the good guys, as I profess to do! Yes! Even you non-western enthusiasts will find yourselves unable to put this compelling rendition of unending adventures aside until the final paragraph has been absorbed!!!😃

Realizations

It was an amazing story of a young, talented lawman who encountered a truly huge hurdle that challenged every aspect of his being. I think this was pretty much reflective with a lot of people’s perceptions towards law enforcement. Sure, there are bad people just like in any other profession but there are also those honorable ones who work really hard to bring justice no matter how hard.

A very good story and it is full of action from beginning to end and the twists and turns are ever present The characters are determined and brave and forgiving and the extended epilogue is very good and shows contentment and happiness and a chance for others to have a New Beginning

Not my cup of tea

While the storyline was good, I found it to be way too wordy and meandering, to the point I almost gave up on it, but I was hooked on it enough to see it to the end.

Thought provoking

Not a lot of action, lots of bible, philosophy and thoughts about love and speculation about relationships. Read like a mystery novel with typos.
