The last thing I needed right now was some random walk-in bubbling over with grief while I had a motion that I was concerned about getting filed.“Did she say what it was about?” I finally asked, trying to keep the irritation from showing in my voice but only half succeeding.“No, she didn’t.”I hesitated, wondering if I even wanted to take on another case at the moment. I had a full docket, so to speak, more work than I really needed. I supposed it was a good thing that I was so busy that I had the option of turning down cases.A sob came through the phone, and my heart wrenched. Why did I have to hear her cry? My instinct had been to tell Denise to send the person to somebody else, but that gut-wrenching sound was going to haunt me the rest of the afternoon unless I did something about it. I glanced at my watch again, and even though it was a significant motion that I still had not thoroughly researched, I knew now that my only way out was to meet with the woman and handle it from there. My conscience would not allow me to do otherwise at this point.“Mitch, are you there?” Denise asked.“Send her in. I’ll talk to her for a minute.”

Quite a poor performance. The author doesn't seem to remember his first Mitch Turner book where his girlfriend was named Britney, but is suddenly now called Barbara (who was a suspect in the original book). And it has nothing to do with timelines.
Also, the use of "drug" is not the past tense for "drag", that is "dragged".
Wooden, unbelievable characters. He didn't even finish off the story with explaining who killed the second guy.
Not being impressed with the authors first book in this series I decided to give the second a try. Same result though. The author rambles a lot and gets off of the subject. He goes on and on about his current and former relationships and it gets real boring. The concept of the story is pretty good but he over tells the story and it becomes tedious to read.
Man is accused of murdering one of his firm’s partners. Actually he did kill him, everyone admits. But was it murder, self defense or something else?
This book had many signs of being hastily written. For example, it’s mentioned near the beginning that the victim had grabbed a knife first. Then this detail is dropped till much, much later. I was never satisfied as to why self defense wasn’t explored more. Some issues are brought up, then dropped (Why did Ellie take off so much time? Mitch’s problem with his girlfriend could have had more of a conclusion).
In addition, the story doesn’t completely make sense. The defendant’s changing opinion as to whether he is guilty or should plea bargain is not that well done, and the conclusion is not convincing.
Still, the story kept my interest, and I enjoyed the courtroom scenes. But this novel is nowhere near as good as the first book in the series. 2 1/2 stars.
fifty shades of deceitful, very good, will recommend
I’m the type of reader that pays attention to details and I remember things from another book. So, I’m petty and I couldn’t overlook something that caught my attention when I read it. And it bothers me throughout the book. Ok, could someone please explain to me was Mitch’s girlfriend Barbara, and Britney the same character from book 1? Did author mix up the character names? If not, what happened to Britney that Mitch was so fond of? Every time I read Barbara name, I kept wondering did author meant Britney. I was real curious and confused. But otherwise than that, the book was good, very suspenseful. This book was a page turner with a lot of interesting twists and turns. This storyline reminds me of the quote, “Oh, what a tangled web we weave when first we practice to deceive.”
Good pace. Unexpectedly satisfying ending. Two comments 1) Mitch could use other words besides 'dumping' his girlfriends. It's immature and dehumanizing. 2) Barbara is sketched as an unpleasant character under the best of times. In spite of his describing her as calm and loving. None of these qualities show up in his several books in which she is featured. Their relationship and his devotion to her make no sense. Hope she stops making appearances in his future novels. Besides that, I like the character and his legal finesse.
Maybe it was because and this one I really didn’t like the main character Mitch— but I also in from the last book remembered another girlfriend and it wasn’t Barbara. I was confused about that and each of the characters should’ve been guilty. It was a confusing plot, but I still enjoyed the court interaction.
this was an interesting read once you think you know something there is another turn
So as I was reading it was a kinda slow start but none the less captivating. As you keep reading you want to find out more info. And the ending is none the less surprising. Keep reading you will be surprised at every turn.
This is the second book of this author that I have read. This was an interesting legal thriller. Quite a bit of surprising twist in the end. As a side note, there are quite a few loose ends to be tied(for example, how one other partner, Fran died and who killed him) as well as a number of editorial issues.
Throughout the book I was constantly thinking it wasn't as good as the first. There were clues present from the beginning that you just had to wait for the lawyer to recognize, taking from the overall suspense for me. However, the last few chapters when it all came together were great and I couldn't put the book down until I was done.
An OK read. I’m 86 and a voracious reader of pretty much any genre. Prefer the older wars and legal mysteries. This wasn’t up to Grisham, but he isn’t consistently good. This story eventually lost my interest about three quarters through. His first book seemed better.
I enjoyed this book a great deal, but there are dozens of instances where the wrong character's name is used, especially at the end of the book. It becomes confusing and distracting trying to figure out which character was actually being mentioned.
Intriguing plot with twists and turns. The book explores relationships at work, in the home and within cults. Interesting twists make solving the mystery easy, but catching the culprit and proving it are difficult. Good read.
This book and the previous one were simply dreadful. It drove me crazy that he had people speaking without contractions. Also the typos (I hope they were typos and not misspelling). Thank god it was free or I would have felt robbed. Not reading this author again.
Very believable thriller, involving A Cult, Greed and betrayal. Mitch is hired by a woman to defend the man accused of murdering her husband. The author manages to make you feel the human emotions involved in past relationships that ended badly .
A real mind bending story with a lot of twists and turns to fake you out throughout the telling. I don't care for the style the author uses but he does a very effective job of weaving the tale in a believable manner and is a joy to read.
A Really disappointing read , very poorly edited as details change throughout the book. Court scenes are not quite believable as court etiquette is none existent . I wonder if the author has even been in a court room. Second book is no better !
Another great legal thriller by Dan Decker. Great surprise ending. This is filled with amazing twists and turns. This one is difficult to put down when you start reading.
Definitely a page turner. Many twists and turns and an unbelievable surprise ending!!!! I thought it took a long time to get to the meat of the story but what an ending.
Good story. Somewhat far-fetched in a few aspects, but the author pulled it all together to make a nice yarn. I recommend this book to those enamored of courtroom drama.
It was a surprise when the evil ones were the only ones to end up in jail. I expected Mason to get some type of punishment for stabbing Max, even though Max attacked him first.
Wow! This one twisted and turned to the point I was dizzy with intrigue. Definitely kept me guessing until the end. Good story and a great rollercoaster ride to the end!
I like , the mental aspect as though he's reading their reactions to questions the way the author describes how he see his characters . I look forward to his next one.
I disagree with some of the reviews I read about this book. I couldn’t wait to find out how the trial would be resolved and it was a surprise to me. I like this author because he tells a good story without foul language, gratuitous sex, or violence. That kind of book is worth my time.
This is the second book in the series I have read. Along with book one this was an excellent read. Keeps you guessing till the end. So many twists and turns I couldn't put it down. Love this author ! Highly recommend his books.
This was interesting, I kept wondering how it was going to work out and that kept me turning the pages. Two books and Mitch has two different girlfriends, both this names starting with B. He has a type lol.
Couldn't put this book down. I read the first book of the series and was hooked, cannot wait to start the third in the series I will be following Dan Decker.
