True crime meets local history. This book covers over thirty historical murders in the North Cork area. The map from Mitchelstown in the east all the ways to the Kerry border is dotted with killings. Each one is uniquely different. Men and women are driven by different motives love, money, drink, madness but the most common in North Cork are disputes over land.
At times its obvious who done it but some murders remain unsolved. You will have to make your own mind up. Many Irish people grow up with a romantic view of Ireland long ago, that view will be challenged after reading this. How the justice system dealt with each case is also included. It’s amazing at times the seemingly guilty party gets away with it and in other cases; a man is hung on far less evidence.
It brought me back to Ireland of the nineteenth and early twentieth century and how hard live was then.
Some places in Cork are familiar to me, others not so much.
The one reason that I only gave it three stars was actually because the grammar and spelling left a lot to be desired. This really irritated me as I read it. This spoiled it for me. I apologise for being pedantic!!
It did enlighten me though on the crimes that took place and many of the motives, mostly land or money! Some tragic tales.
