Acrylics for the Absolute Beginner

Rate this book
This is an easy-to-follow guide that teaches by encouragement and inspiration!

Acrylics are the ideal medium for the beginner.

Being opaque, they allow correction and re-working and their quick drying time means that you can carry your work home without worrying about smudging.

Charles is an experienced and trusted demonstrator whose popularity derives from an ability to explain even complex topics in simple terms that won't confuse you with technicalities.

This book begins with an explanation of basic brushstrokes, exercises in simple shapes and hints on working from photographs.

Charles moves quickly on to trees, figures, animals and boats, getting you to produce real subjects immediately.

Practical working is one of the key elements of this attractive new series.

The book is based around a series of 12 pre-printed outlines that provide the basis for complete demonstrations that introduce you to oil and watercolour styles, skies, landscapes and water.

Along the way, you'll be practising composition, perspective, glazing and texture - the building blocks of successful painting in any medium.

Not my type!

I’m very particular about how-to books, I want good step by step. While this book does include step by step, it wasn’t to the level of detail I wanted. Maybe because they were mostly landscape, and I wanted more realism. I see there are many great reviews. And it IS a decent book. Maybe I’m too picky!

I would disagree with the “absolute beginner” title

This book is wonderful and it gives you lots of painting ideas with beaches, streets, buildings, trees, farms, and lakes; basically a whole gamut of things to practice painting. However, I would not describe this as an easy to follow to book for beginners.

I have been painting acrylics on and off as a beginner for a while, and I still thought that a lot of these techniques would be hard to master. Maybe it’s just my own level of understanding and others would find it easier? Either way, the book itself is wonderful and I can imagine buying it and using it across the years to slowly master the medium of acrylics.

Great info! I especially loved the section on paper noting in the watercolor style (with acrylics). Washes and lifting out info was fabulous. I’ve been trying different techniques painting clouds and it surely was helpful. Recommend!

Good lessons for beginners

Several great lessons in painting. I learned a lot and will practice on canvas. Laying on paint and then pulling it off is magical.
