Ella is in Year 7 at Eden and she's settled in even though she misses her family. She emails her little sister often to catch up on news at home.
She's a reporter in the school newspaper. Mrs Sinclair announces that the school will have a musical, and students of all ages can audition. The 'Enchantment Musical', which she saw with her family the previous year.
Although Ella can sing, she can't reach the very high notes. She's been practising 'Arianwan's Song' for the audition, but it ends on a high note. Saskia is hoping to get the part of Arianwan, but she sings gruffly. She's also on the school newspaper, and she's decided to write a story about the previous school auditorium. It was burnt down years earlier, believed to be because of a 'curse' caused by an ancient mask.
Ella doesn't believe that. She does wonder why little things keep going wrong at rehearsal. When the group of young thespians find a scary mask, the girls rush away. They break some of the set, which has to be remade. With only three days until opening night, Portia, who has the part of 'Arianwen', gets sick. She has to go home with glandular fever. No one else knows her lines.
Ella investigates who could be foiling the rehearsals, where the poorly made mask came from, and who could want to ruin the school Musical?
When it looks as though the night will be a disaster, Ella makes a suggestion that saves the day.
This was a great book with a genuine theme of friendship, working hard at school, and solving problems. I also loved how Laura added longer words and explained the meanings of them throughout the book.

2 1/2 stars. Low readability for immature grade 4/5 girls who haven’t yet moved into the more complex literature.
An ok continuation for 3rd graders who are moving on from Ella Diaries, but I’d be looking to get readers into other books.
