Pros:
- e fain organizată, are forma unui curs;
- informații super utile pe care nu le știam;
- prezintă principale principii din design, ceea ce o face să funcționeze ca un curs;
- e genul de carte la care eu una știu că o să mă întorc la nevoie;

This is a well-intentioned book aimed at those who are new to interior design and who are perhaps occupying a home for the first time.

It’s quite technical with suggested room layouts and colour schemes (bizarrely, there is a colour wheel printed in black and white) but I’m never sure how useful these actually are because they never represent one’s own home. It is otherwise largely an exercise in stating the obvious – if there is a stain on the floor, cover it with a rug; don’t place furniture where it will obstruct the opening of a door; etc. A lot of pages are given to the arrangement of cushions, ornaments, plants and vases, which got a bit dull.

The author argues that interior design books generally feature photographs of high-end homes with designs and items that most people can’t afford, so she chose to use only hand-drawn illustrations throughout. I think that was a mistake. I think those beautifully photographed posh books and magazines provide much better visual inspiration than this book and it is often possible to create similar effects on a more modest budget.

This is a lovely-looking book, and I liked the idea of having some hard and fast rules about interior design rather than glossy magazines showing off items.

However, after reading the book, I'm not sure I came away with any valuable tips I could apply. They were either simple common sense or contradictory.

I've come away feeling that interior design is something you are good at or not, and for our own homes, it is best to fill them with things we like in a way that works for us.

Povinná literatúra z úcty k ľudstvu :D (aby sme nemuseli kričať “my eeeeyes, my eeyes!”), pre každého človeka, lebo každý musí niekde bývať!

+ zrozumiteľná a láskavá

- mini chyby v preklade

Great for anyone who has ever been stuck with what to do with a room that doesn’t feel quite right. Especially when you don’t know where to start, this book has loads of rules of thumb and ways to think about interior colours, styles and their combinations to create a more seamless finish.

For quite a few of the concepts discussed, certain approaches intuitively feel better aesthetically but it’s nice to have a more rational and concrete explanation to why that might be the case. It gives a better understanding of why one might have a certain gut reaction to one room vs another.

Also love that she has thought carefully about children’s rooms including the place for the parent within that room.

Only gave it 2 stars because it’s an attractive book that’ll look nice on my shelf, lol. Otherwise, utter tripe. Completely obvious, banal content and truly patronising. Author tries to find the words to explain gut instinct, and you just can’t prescribe or teach that. Really struggled through!
The ‘technical’ areas were unnecessary, confusing and really not useful. I am an interior designer (and hoped this would be a handy handbook to refer to, lol) and have yet to meet anyone in the trade who uses things like the golden spiral to design with. Felt like it was included to make her seem more intelligent, and would be super confusing for anyone new to design. Really can’t see anyone having any good take aways from this book

I'll give credit where credit is due: it's extremely useful as someone as new to interior design as I am to have good advice, both practical and abstract, about what to keep in mind as one designs a home. Ideas about how room designs should flow into one another, how furniture can try to mimic the architectural motifs of your place, and how shades of paint can accentuate the desired proportions of a space are concepts not entirely intuitive to the layperson.

I think a more accessible guide however would be to have, in addition to the general advice, pictures of spaces where the reader is walked step-by-step through how such rooms accomplish a sense of coziness or cultivate a desired atmosphere. Anyway, off to make my mood board!

It was a goodish compilation of interior design basics and tips. But if you already have some level of taste (in fashion, UI, food or similar art areas), then you will find common sense knowledge packaged for interior design.

Still, I think, there were new bits, some of which are:

When starting designing you should ask what kind of life you wanna live in this house, your lifestyle, how much time you spend at home, what you usually do at home, what kind of feel you want a room to exert,

Before buying a place, look out for different types of noises (airplane, schools, neighbour, white furniture, busy roads, transport, renovation).

Before buying large expensive pieces, like sofa, think how exactly you our your partner like sitting on it, do you have kids, go for something neutral.

Ergonomics at home should be as important as at work, or as standardised clothes sizing. For ex: - stove near and in front of sink
- cutting surface near stove
- stove and sink and fridge not further than 1.5 basketball steps from each other
- fridge should be next to some surface to put on
- don't position stove right by a wall. tall surface

Also, a coffee table's shape should be different from the sofa's internal shape to make it more interesting.
Rugs should slightly look out, as if grouping items together.

Basically a textbook on interior design for the absolute beginner. It delivers clear guidance on a lot of the questions that friends and I had on furnishing our first post b-school apartments. Things like, how big should the rug be relative to the table? To the room? How many inches of space should there be between the dining room table and the wall for people to move around? Etc. I remember googling those types of things a lot and it would have been nice to have them in a book.

My copy is now full of flags and post-its; I’m excited to revisit when we move into the new place.

The lack of photographs in this book seems to really bother some people. It contains no photos, just simple line drawing exhibits when needed. I’m fine with this - I think it makes the book more accessible and it reminds me of Mark Bittman’s “how to cook everything” which also has no photos. I do wish there were more exhibits, though! Some principles just make more sense illustrated.

Highly recommend this book! This will be my primary reference book for many years to come, I suspect, as I seek to make my home more comfortable and beautiful. This book distills professional ideas into concise and applicable explanations for the average home-maker. It is also a great resource for when you might be stumped on how to do something the "right" way, such as balancing pictures on a wall, placing (and sizing) coffee tables, hanging towel racks, creating a visually pleasing still life, arranging furniture according to the Golden Ratio, and so on. Even though the author provides all the "right" answers, she also gives you the tools and ideas necessary to branch out and express plenty of creativity in shaping your spaces. Therefore I hope this will also be a great resource for inspiration in times to come.

I will mark this book as “read” because I almost read it but I don’t intend to finish it. If you are an architect or studying architecture (or any other subjects related to this) do not read this book.
It has a whole chapter about curtains and it’s so boring it made me feel like I was torturing myself.
Then there is this:
“Avoid the temptation to place candles or candlesticks on a bookcase, even as decoration. Someone may be thoughtless enough to light them, then you’ll end up with a hole burnt in the shelf above or, worse, with the house on fire.”
What even is this???

I found this book on Pinterest and started reading it in March, it’s September and I literally couldn’t even stand reading more than 3 pages in a row, very very disappointing.

This book about Interior Design is a great one to keep for whenever you may want to complete an interior project. It covers everything in an easy to understand way with a good amount of pictures, on lots of different topics. Some of them include how to organise your spaces for a more organised look, to the Golden ratio and the more scientific methods behind the designs. I like how you can tailor whatever information she says to fit into your own space and style.

I was so thrilled to get this as I'm moving house soon from years of rentals into one I own so can fully decorate.

While I have MANY Instagram and Pinterest boards for interior design, I really appreciated the rules of thumb outlined in this book. My new house isn't my dream house (hello Palm Springs mid-century beauties), but I feel I got some really good pointers on how to make my house a home that I love.

I got out of this book exactly what I had hoped for AND MORE. it was so easy to read, concise, non biased to a specific style, and really just a great guideline. Definitely meant for those who have a deeper interest in interior design and want to learn how to apply it in their own homes and spaces. So glad I got it. Helps that it makes a beautiful coffee table book too 😉

I’ve read thru dozens of interior design books recently. This one is a keeper. An easy to digest, straight to the point, helpful go-to reliable resource. One you might find at the library and later order a copy for yourself. There is plenty of expertise in one spot, easier than tracking down that one helpful pin on Pinterest.

A nice easy beginners read on interior designs. Mostly conceptual, laying out the building blocks of typical design. I liked the use of sketches instead of full photographic room scapes to get the points across as it leaves more interpretation of what you can do with your own space instead of basing initial ideas of others.
