I was really surprised by how much I loved this book since I couldn't stand Fiora in the first one! The author did an excellent job giving a little more insight into her life and changing the reader's perspective on her. She was a also a very dynamic character that was easy to love once she started to be more vulnerable and change for the better. This whole series is a great, clean spin on classic fairy tales! Very entertaining! I am now anxiously awaiting the fourth book to come out next month!

Alright, moment of honesty: I have so thoroughly enjoyed the first two books that, despite my clear adoration for all things mermaid, I was a little doubtful that this one would hold up to the other two, especially with Fiora as the MC. But, fear not my friends! Marshall's got a few tricks up her sleeve!

Okay, so, right off let's talk about Fiora. In the first book she was overbearing and clearly not the kindest soul in the room. She was competitive and knew exactly what she wanted. She was well-trained and did everything in her power to disqualify anyone who might have gained an advantage over her. What I love most about her in this book? She didn't change. It wasn't like, "Oops, my bad, what I really meant was..." No. Fiora was still brash and competitive and fiesty and quick-tongued. She was still the same girl from the Princess Test. We just a better view of her. Getting inside her head revealed the truth we didn't see in book one, and that was really cool. Fiora was desperate. She needed Alaric and she is doggedly determined when it comes to her goals. That shone through, even as her goals and needs changed. Fiora is a force to be rekoned with, but she didn't lose her personality. In this book, she was refined and she grew as a person into an even better version of herself, but there was a reason for her behavior and that endeared me to her all the more.

Additionally, Gustave was so charming and adorable and I loved him! He was a fun addition in the second book and I liked how he worked with Carina and Steffan. But seeing him shine in his own right was really fun, too. We see that he isn't the adventurous, mischievous, brave, and spirited character that Carina and Stefan both are. He has a softer, more steadfast character. And, admittedly, I loved his heart. His heart was golden. Some of my favorite parts of the book were watching Gustave and Fiora interact. The relationship was beautifully portrayed and developed. They grew together and I loved seeing how they reacted to one another. Gustave took off his shoes for this girl!! And danced in his socks for this girl! My heart just melted. <3

I loved the dowager queen. She had spunk! I wish we could learn her story at some point. I'm sure it's a story to tell. The other characters rounded out the story and set us up for future stories, too. The cast was a ton of fun in this one. It also really made me smile to see a few older faces from the previous books, especially one dark-haired princess from Santelle and one devious thundering voice in the deep! Oh, also, seeing Fiora's aunts was really fun! I liked seeing more of them and getting to know them a little. I kind of hope we get to see more of them, and definitely more of Zoe!

The story balanced between the sea world and the kingdom of Montaigne, Gustave's kingdom. The destruction wrought by the kraken in the previous book lays out the background for a hurting kingdom and Gustave's heart for them was obvious. That's also part of what I loved so much about him. His dedication to his people and to his family. He was focused on finding his father, but his hands were tied pretty tight by the marquis! The mermaid world was really pretty and I had a lot of fun there. We didn't spend as much time there as I thought we might, but Fiora carried the mermaid culture with her and that brought a really nice balance to the story, I thought. Also, their songs and sign language and magic were epic! One of the coolest parts of the world, by far!

The plot was fun. This war between doing good for the kingdom, finding his father, and being basically dragged into a marriage by the ever-ridiculous marquis was a fun tangle of a plot for Fiora to be dropped into the middle of. This isn't your traditional retelling of The Little Mermaid, and yet, Marshall hit on some very, very classic elements that most retellings just ignore altogether. It was a true treat to see the story done this way. The pain in her feet, the need for a human to share his soul, the dagger and hair and everything, honestly. I found it a very clever retelling and enjoyed watching the layers of the series pull back to create a cohesive, intertwining world of stories. Plus, she threw in some pretty gasp-worthy plot twists of her own. I mean, the other woman? That was definitely a tense moment! There's a story there, too! (I'm thinking maybe Snow White??)

The book was clean, like the previous two, and a lot of fun. No foul language, a very sweet and mild romance (and that development of trust and putting others before oneself! Oh! Loved it!), and pretty mild violence, a kraken attack, some baddies, etc. But all very tactfully written, nothing explicit or graphic. Perfectly suitable, in my opinion, for a preteen.

This was such a good book, this is the third book that I have read written by A G Marshall and I have to say, I think it is my favorite! Princess of Mermaids is the third book in A G Marshall’s series, Fairy Tale Adventures. Once I heard that this book was about Fiora, I had to read it. I couldn’t wait to see what made her tick, and I have to say I loved it!
Fiora was such an interesting character. I loved reading about her journey and reading about her fall in love. All her life Fiora wanted to fit in, but unfortunately she was stuck between two worlds: the humans and the mermaids. However at times she feels more human than mermaid. She finds herself at the Montaigne palace and at the end of herself. What will happen when she starts to belong in such a place, how much is she willing to risk to find a place to belong?
Reading about Fiora was such an adventure. She had a bad reputation from the first two books, but as I was reading about her I began to like her more. I really enjoy when authors write character arcs, it is always so interesting and I find myself liking these characters more than I thought I would. Fiora was no different, once I started her book I found myself liking her and even cheering for her.
Gustave truly wanted to be a good king, but he also wanted to find his father. He believes that he is still alive, but it is getting harder and harder to balance being king and looking for his father. I was so excited to read about Gustave and it was really fun. Even though he was king, he was still held accountable to his family and that had me laughing out loud!
It was so much fun to read about Fiora and Gustave through each other’s eyes. I absolutely adored Gustave’s family, they totally made this book so much better. Another reason I loved this book was because of the witty humor and the dialogue. Good dialogue really makes a book!
This was the first little mermaid retelling that I have read that followed the old fairytale so closely. I really enjoyed Princess of Mermaids and I would definitely recommend it. It was my absolute favorite and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!

Somehow I think I enjoyed this book the most of all the Fairy Tale Adventures!

I read this series starting with book 4, and then went back to 1, 2, and ended with this, book 3. It was interesting reading it in that order because I SHOULD have known who the villain was, as she shows up again in the last bit of Princess of Roses. I also SHOULD have known what happened to Prince Darian! But alas, I wasn’t paying attention much.

A G Marshall is brilliant in how she not only interweaves fairytales into one another, but also keeps the essential parts of the original stories from Grimm and Anderson but gives plenty of shout outs to the Disney movies us 90s kids grew up with and fell in love with.

Stand-alone-interwoven-fairy-tale-retellings is one of my favorite genres, and there are plenty of indie authors that write it. My method of reading these stories is to begin with the Beauty and the Beast retelling and then if I like the author, pick up a few of their other retellings. Miss Marshall’s stories are the first that I did this with and have since read ALL of her books within the series, and she did not disappoint. I now eagerly follow her facebook page waiting for the release date for Princess of Mirrors!

If you’re a fan of Melanie Cellier, Melanie Dickerson, Kelley Davidson, Camille Peters, then give AG Marshall a shot!

This is a cute series from a new to me author. I've been enjoying these retellings of fairy tales that all resolve around a greater threat. Each book in the series is about different characters but they overlap and is best to be read in order.

This is my favorite Fairy tale retelling I've read so far. The author does such a good job of taking things from both the original tale, and from Disney and making it her own in her own fantasy world. Fiora is a real character, with real problems and you just feel for her the entire story. She never got annoying with her doubts, because her character arc was just so organic and the culmination of her story arc was so satisfying and perfect. Fiora and Gustav's romance, also was very realistic. They just blended so well together, and I loved every moment of it.

The supporting cast was no slouch either. Fiora's mermaid family, Gustav's family, the other members of court and everyone involved in the story just felt so real. I know I'm using that term a lot, but in fairy tale retellings, the characters tend to take a back seat and be rather one note, so it was nice to read one with really fleshed out characters you enjoyed reading, no matter who it was. Of course the characters meant to be bad and annoying were so, but it was never at the obnoxious degree I find in other books. Just a really well rounded cast of characters in this book.

The plot was well paced. There was enough of a mystery, enough stakes for Fiora, that I was on the edge of my seat from start to finish. The romantic fluff never detracted, and only enhanced the story, and I couldn't even attempt to guess the mystery until it was revealed. The awesome action scenes at the end were great too, and I really enjoyed the world building in this story.

The mermaid world was really well done. I'm a huge fan of mermaids, so seeing a glimpse of their world was awesome. Song magic is something I like a lot too and it was really fleshed out and well done in this book. This story made me curious to read the others in the series, which is what I'm going to do next because this world is just so well thought out and fascinating, and all the characters we saw in cameos seemed interesting too.

I can't say enough good things about this book. Just fantastic start to finish. Fiora and Gustav are great leads, the world and magic are great, and who can beat mermaids? It has great themes of finding your self worth, finding your family, and learning how to overcome abuse and accept love that is freely given to you. I can't say enough good things about this book, other than read it, you won't regret it!

Reader thoughts: I just didn't like Fiora as much as the other books' MCs. Gustave was great, but Fiora was rude and annoying. She grew ... a little ... but not as much as I wanted her to. Besides, she didn't have good reasons for keeping secrets from the other characters (like not telling them she knew sign language).

I liked that she and Gustave and his sister all knew sign language. I also liked that they had good reason to have learned. The mermaids needed it to communicate during their singing. Gustave and his sister had to know it because their grandmother was deaf (or nearly so).

I felt bad for Dale Mercer (not just because I knew he would be the father from Beauty and the Beast retelling). What would have been so bad with having the mermaids bring him back his special forks?? (Other than too quickly solving the next book, that is.) But, no, Fiora was too wrapped up in her own problems.

I liked the singing music idea. I liked that the trickster lady was someone I didn't expect . I liked the king as a statue (which I predicted as soon as we saw him). I disliked a lot of the mermaid culture, but that came through Fiora's eyes. No clothes? Painful, pinching clam adornments? These seemed odd. Writing on shells was okay, although I liked Deep Blue's idea for mermaids to record sound in conch shells instead of using writing. I did totally understand Fiora's need to escape.

The original tale lets the prince get married, and the mermaid-turned-human turns into seafoam. It was rather awkward that

Writer thoughts: Turning the "bad guy" of a previous book into the MC has been done before. Why do authors do it?
1, perhaps they are trying to draw attention to the fact that there is a larger problem, a larger "bad guy."
2, perhaps they are building the character to have more growth, a more dramatic arc.
3, This adds to the tension for readers to turn a negative character into a positive one.

I didn't expect this... Other books in this series was good, but a little boring and not involve. But this one was great!

I really like story, characters and magic! I was pleased with the fact that this book is long (so far this book is the longest) and that it took the time to develop the relationship, story and world of people and mermaids (and also magic). I love it! Because it helps me feel into the story and get to know the characters as much as possible.

Ahh, the characters! At first, I thought I wouldn't like Fiora. This is because I met her in the first book ("Prinsess of Shadows") and I didn't like her character and behavior - she was rude, mean and annoying. Therefore, applause for the author that, with this book, she has become one of my favorite characters in this series. Fiora was confident, brave and showed a much better side than in the previous book. I also liked Gustaw, who was a really interesting character, and he was also very helpful and charming.

I also liked the plot and it is probably the only retelling (which I know) that is closest to the original fairy tale. The story was engaging, interesting and sometimes surprising - although a careful reader should guess some things. However, it doesn't take the joy out of reading, and it really makes it a good book.

I recommend this book and I think that it is the best book in the series so far! And I'm glad that I didn't stop reading after the first volume 😁

This is one of those books that's not necessarily good but it's enjoyable. I still have the complaints as I did from book #2 in the series; the books feel too disconnected and the magic systems feel completely different from book to book. If this was intentional it could end up having a really cool crossover result similar to the MCU. If the couples from each of the previous books team up to form an Avengers-esque team then I am here for it. If we get the different types of magic as Infinity Stone type things that when brought together have more power, that would be great. But it didn't feel like that's what we're building up to, I think it really was just Marshall trying to have too much fun with her magic system and forgetting the rules (an understandable mistake but still not ideal where the magic system is so important). Other then that the narrative was decently organized, the story fairly engaging, and despite being slightly predictable was overall enjoyable. Will I read the next one when it comes out? Probably. Would I recommend the series? I'll withhold judgement until it's over.

I didn't like this one as much as the first two. I was still invested but felt the story dragged a bit longer than it needed to. I also felt the two main leads didn't get enough chemistry built between the two for them to fall in love.

The typos and grammatical errors also hurt the story a bit. I don't remember them being as bad in the first two books, but it's been a while since I've read them. It almost felt like each chapter had a grammatical mistake or typo. Which made me read some sentences two times to put the words right for it to make sense. I do think the author edits herself, which I know is hard. It just made reading the book a little harder for me and not flow as well as I like.

Other than those thoughts, I thought everything else was good, I liked the plot twist, and I'm looking forward to the next book.

Loved it! I'm a big fan of mermaids and this book is what brought me to this series. I love how the author kept all the main points of each story, but with a wonderful series bringing it all together. I can't wait to read what comes next!

Absolutely the best retelling of the little mermaid. It has hints of Hans Christian Andersen darker end, rather than Disney’s happily ever after interruption. I loved that it was told this way and that the littler mermaid wasn’t as good, as most retelling have her be.

Really enjoyable writing. Advise not to read if you are in a place you don’t want to laugh out loud. Much humor sprinkled throughout the book.

I was drawn to this series because it had everything I needed for a bit of escapism during this time of global pandemic: strong female characters with agency; a touch of magic; romance with a twist; humor; and beautifully written stories that feel complete.

It's for those reasons that I feel slightly disappointed in the PRINCESS OF MERMAIDS. It still has a strong female character with agency--except when she's giving up because nobody likes her (only at one point recognizing that her own behavior might have had something to do with that). The magic still intrigues, the romance is touching and complex, the humor makes me laugh. But, there are also a few easy to fix editorial flaws (words missing, etc.) which I found distracting. Still, I was drawn into the story and enjoyed it.

My biggest issue is that, this is the first book in the series that makes me feel incomplete. Yes, I know it is a series. Yes, there have been hints all along that there is a bigger story underlying the mysterious resurgence of magic in this world. But, until this book, I felt complete where the stories ended. This is the first time I feel like I am being told, you must read on to get the whole story. and that bothers me for some reason. Perhaps its because there's no indication as to when the answers will come. There are infinite fairy tales that could benefit from A. G. Marshall's storytelling ability and perspectives, and that's wonderful. There are infinite ways to build this world. That too, is wonderful. At the same time, that infinity makes the idea of a series daunting, because I would like to know that someday I will read the happily ever after.

This is the third book in the Fairy Tale Adventures series by A.G. Marshall.

This was a really interesting book. I like how the first two books in this series feature characters that will show up in upcoming books. Although, I was not a fan of Fiora in book one. She came off as annoying and self righteous. In this book we experience her feelings and who she really is after her father banishes her to the sea. Carina’s father did a similar thing in book two. I feel so sorry for these characters whose families turn away from them for their own self interested reasons. I guess that is what makes us like books like this… we root for the underdog and want them to succeed.

King Gustave was a big part of book two, so I was happy to see him as the main male lead in this story. He and Fiora really made a good couple. I am glad they got to know each other through the deception period because I am not sure they would have been drawn to each other if that had not occurred.

This tells the story of the Little Mermaid. I love how the author really makes the story her own and it is a well thought out, well plotted piece of fiction. All the twists and turns really keep you interested and you are continually wondering what will happen next.

I can’t wait for the next book in the series to come out on October 23rd. It will be a retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

So I'm a bit biased against this book simply because I've never loved Ariel once I realized how bratty she was, but I still found this book to be excellent.

Fiora might still have a temper and be wildly un-ladylike, at least she had a reason. Although she might not deserve the super-kind-and-somehow-awkwardly-charming Gustave, I didn't hate her, which was a plus. Besides, she did show some true heart in the end. Her bravery wasn't something I expected, so that was a nice surprise. And Gustave, of course, was absolutely lovely and far more interesting and sweet than Price Eric from the movie.

Plotwise, things got a bit muddled for me, but that's only because when you throw too many details at my face, I get all turned around. Everything did resolve nicely in the end with JUST enough loose ends and missing characters to make me curious for the next book. I loved how Fiora's family (on both sides) tied into the plot, and how Gustave's own troubles got mixed into a larger scandal. The author did an excellent job not only staying true to the Little Mermaid story, but also developing it within the larger world she's created.

The ending was cute, if a bit rushed, and overall, I enjoyed it. I still don't love the tale of the Little Mermaid, but this book made me tolerate it.

I did not think I would like this book. I’ve never been a fan of the Little Mermaid, and Fiora was a butt in the first book of the series, so I wasn’t really excited for her POV.

I was so wrong! It’s a super unique retelling of the Little Mermaid, and you learn why Fiora acted like she did in the Princess tests. You get to see her grow into a better person when she is shown some kindness and her sense of humor shows!

Gustave and Fiora make such a sweet couple! He’s so polite and nice, and she’s got the redhead temper. 😂 I have two readheaded siblings so I can say that!

I think this must be a trend in this series that the main characters fall in love within a couple days, and that’s a bit of a pet peeve of mine, but the author has a talent for making that insta love seem realistic, and her stories are so interesting and unique, that I really am not minding it too much!

On to book 4 now!

A creative take on A Little Mermaid. Fiora has never found a place to belong and often ends up a part of crazy accidents that seem to emphasize that she doesn't quite fit in the human world or mermaid world. Gustave cares about duty, but cares even more about the ones he loves. He is humorous and perceptive. The story is told from both Fiora's and Gustave's perspectives as they navigate politics, magic, dark forces, and love. The short chapters as well as the many mysteries and funny moments made the book fly by in a fun whirl of events.
This book does reference previous books so it would be helpful, but not essential, to have read the first two books in the series to better understand some of the characters, Fiora's background, and some background on the dark forces. This book felt a bit PG-13 as the romance stayed clean but the mermaids have no clothes. The book stayed light and fun and had a very satisfying ending.

Well, this one took an unusual turn!
I don't know much about the Little Mermaid story. I watched the Disney version in French class over 20 years ago and I can still sing "Kiss the Girl" in French...LOL.
Fiora wasn't my favorite character in book 1. Gustave was fun in book 2. Honestly, I don't remember much of him in book 1.
This story was full of turns for me. But that might be due to the lack of knowledge of the original story. I liked this one though!
I loved the mermaid family and then the new family Fiora made on land. I loved aspects of the story that showed her character growth. And there was a LOT of growth!
The magic was interesting too. I thought this was the last in the series, but I'm delightfully surprised the series continues on after this book! Now to join those waiting for book 4 later this year!!

For those who know me real well, know I love mermaids. So a retelling of The Little Mermaid? I'm all in. This one featured some of the classic bits of the Disney movie retelling, along with major tones of the Grimm Brothers version. It fit right in with the world of this series and made the world of this series even bigger and better. Fiora is still as headstrong as in the first book in the series and once she wants something she doesn't take no for an answer. Which definitely works in her favor in this book. And the bonus is, she gets what she has always wanted since readers met her in the first book.

A mermaid's daughter

This book continues on from the first two and while each book has a complete romance story set in different kingdoms, it is clear all have bigger problems.
Flora has a human father and a mermaid mother but feels she doesn't belong in either world. King Gustave father went missing and is presumed dead...but isn't. Kraken are attacking ships and countries, and magic and curses are involved. There are some very funny parts, especially regarding forks, the different ideals of beauty, not to mention that when a mermaid transforms to human, the lack of clothes becomes highly embarrassing. Ĺooking forward to the next book.

Fiery Fiora was an unpleasant character during the Princess Test, and when she is rejected, her father virtually disowns her in favour of his other daughter
Fiora as it turns out is actually half Mermaid, and in unhappily stuck under the sea. A spell gone wrong finds her back in human form, in agonising pain and unable to speak.
Prince Gustave is reluctant to marry anyone as he's convinced his father is still alive, and once he marries he'll be forced to take the throne.
Very good retelling of the Little Mermaid

As a person who adores Disney films and the original fairytales, this book incorporated both worlds at the same time. I loved it. I was too busy to finish the book, and it took a while, but I adore the contrast of Fiona from book 1 to Lady Mer in this book. So that’s why she was insufferable in the first book. She had a reason to wed, and quickly at that. I’m glad she found a place where she belonged. But why was she wanted by nog? Why did they want to kill her if she didn’t agree? Why? So many unanswered questions. When will the author reveal the reason?

After reading the first two in the series I honestly wasn’t too keen on reading a book about this character. It did take a while for the book to engage a different viewpoint but I’m glad I stayed with it.

(Without spoilers);
I would recommend you start with the first two books in the series and then also continue to the authors website to read additional notes and chapters regarding the characters

These are such memorable, complex characters! I was a little worried at first that the author couldn't make me like Fiora, but I was wrong. I love a book that challenges the simplistic lines between hero and villain and explores what makes people act like they do. I do need the villains of this book to get their comeuppance at some point, but I'm assuming that comes in another book in the series. Naturally I've already started Fairy Tale Adventures #4. :)

Impressive

I didn’t expect to like Princess Fiona after the first book in the series. I was wrong. Her story is fantastic. So much growth for her character. King Gustav we met in Princess of Secrets, and I’m glad we get to see more of him here. Excellent read. I highly recommend this book. It could stand alone but is so much more fun with the context of the other two in the series. 10/10

This might’ve been my favorite one so far!! 😍 I loved the story and characters, and the under water kingdom/world building was really cool. I don’t think anyone liked Fiora in the first book, so it was nice to see what was really going on in her head and the stress and pressure she was under. The author’s always able to take the original fairy tale elements and turn them into something original! Really looking forward to the next book! 😆

This was an incredible book! It took me a little longer to get into it than the first two, but overall it was incredible! I love how Miss Marshall incorporated more of the original Little Mermaid elements than I have seen most people do, and of course I loved the appearances from all the characters from the other books. This is definitely my favorite fairytale series and im looking forward to the ones to come!

Grow to like

The main character was hard to like at first, if it weren't for the chapters from Gustave perspective I might have stopped reading... But as I continued to read I grew to like her more and could understand why she was so negative and mean at first. This was an interesting take on the little mermaid.
