Senses Wide Open: That Art and Practice of Living in Your Body

Rate this book
Senses Wide Open shows readers how to be at ease with themselves, feel more balanced emotionally, think more clearly, and experience genuine pleasure in their physical connection to others and the world. Through illuminating personal stories, deep movement exploration, bodywork basics, and step-by-step exercises, author Johanna Putnoi shares the knowledge she has gained from her years of experience teaching people to develop a personal awareness of their body's natural intelligence.
Senses Wide Open is designed to work on the spot. Several times in each chapter, Putnoi asks the reader to put the book down for a moment and "try this." The author's simple exercises are inspiring and accessible. Her unique synthesis integrates a variety of practices, including analytic psychology, body awareness, sensate awareness, meditation, and centering.

Senses Wide Open is a combination of Sensory Awareness (Charlotte Selver's work) and Bioenergetics (Alexander Lowen's work) -- two practices I'm most familiar with in terms of somatic (body-oriented) ways of knowing the self. Techinically, Johanna Putnoi refers to her work as being part of the Lomi School of bodywork (putting together Eastern and Western thought and practice, mindfulness and attention to one's body). The exercises are rooted in mindfulness and bodyfulness. Johanna Putnoi has assembled exercises which help people become more attuned to the delicate connection between inner self and outer world. This is a great book if you're a therapist who wants to become more embodied so you can be greater attuned to clients -- not to mention your own life! A happy human is a happier therapist who has happier clients. :) And, it's a great book for ANY human wanting to feel more zest in life, more aliveness, and greater joy!
