This was good but not great.
My first time reading from this author! It does not disappoint completely but some. But overall this book is good and worth my time😊😊😊 hopefully in the future will be better than this one lol.
‼️‼️‼️THE HEROINE IS A VIRGIN. I’m glad she stayed a virgin for so long and even waiting for the hero because she loves the hero too much more than she can admit.

The hero respects the heroine because she told him not to find her, he said yes to it but LIKE EVEN 7 YEARS LATER??? THATS SOOOO FCKING LONG especially when he said that the heroine have his heart and she is always the love of his life. Like that so coward of the hero to even stay away for that long even when he knows where the heroine is :( I can’t blame the heroine because she went through pretty hard stuff in her life that really breaks her mental health and damaged her emotionally.... so i blame the hero for the separation and for him to wait that long to find the heroine again🙄🙄🙄🙄 weak ass man💀

Maila loved her brothers best friend, Adam since she was a little girl. Adam was embraced by Maila's family and become a part of their close family unit. Maila's father was military and had a great influence on Adam and Maila's brother. Both boys joined the Marines.
As Maila entered her teenage years that loved turned into so much more. Adam always adored Maila. He looked after her and took care of her. And As she came into her teenage years and evolved into a woman he realized his feeling had changed and attraction became very prevalent part of his love for her.
Tragedy, struck and Maila and Adam's relationship fractured. Maila's brother died in the line of duty. Seven years of separation, a lot of heartbreak and questions of how things ended between the two. During those years of separation Adam kept an eye on Maila and Maila was always checking up to see where Adam was in his life.
Buy Maila's loss and hurt was so deep, she pretty much cut off all feelings and became num to all. She made a solitary life for herself and she decided to join the CIA.
Adam decides at one point to try and finally reach out to Maila, but see's her with another man and walks away. But what Adam doesn't know is Maila is working and this was part of a CIA opp.
Months later Adam get's a odd text message and he knows his Maila is in trouble. This is where the intense action takes place and the story takes off. Adam heads to Dubai, that's where the intel says' she is. He tries to go on a solo mission to save her, but one of his fellow team mates won't allow it so he assists Adam in the rescue.
Maila was working with the CIA on busting a sex trafficking organization. She's been put in a precarious situation and knows it doesn't look good. But thing's become very interesting as Adam shows up and escape is their only option.
During all this convoluted and dangerous rescue effort one thing becomes very apparent to both, things are not resolved between the two. And hence from this point on the two begin the journey of forgiveness, grief and the admission of their love for each other. There is a lot of heat break and healing that takes place but it's such an emotional and beautiful ending to their HEA.
Reason for not a 5 star rating, felt that Maila was a little stubborn at times and could have made some better decisions. For those that are curious about safety, it was implied or hinted at that the hero was not celibate during the separation. Would have made this even a better read for me personally if he was, but it's not a deal breaker for me personally because of the heroine saying she never wanted to see him again. So for me I am more forgiving.
Book two for me with this author and I will have to say her books are VERY HARD TO PUT DOWN. Between the action, chemistry and love between the two main characters it's an addicting read.

I love that we are getting a new military series by this Sybil Bartel. I think she writes the best Alpha military men out there. These men are exactly what you would think a dominant, military man would be, in the field and off. I'm glad we are also going to see cameo's of some of the original guys that started it all. I liked the little twist with the heroine this time. She's the strong type of woman we usually see, but this girl has skills and I enjoyed seeing that brought out in this book.

He wasn't ''alpha enough'' to keep her, i can deal with a few months...not 7 fucking years, it's the same thing that ruined for me the book about Candle, WELL at least here she didn't end up being a whore for a MC . She was celibate during the separating but HE WASN'T!!!!and they didn't even talk about it, when she asks him he keep skip the questions and give her his reasons. <.<
I love a possessive H but you can't be possessive when you accept to let her go, nope.
I didn't read it, i will pass this, because i don't want to get disappointed and upset .
At least if they were intimate when they reunited for the first time, but they were before the separation and it's a big NO for me, i hate second chance romances , so yeah, it's a pass.

Now, That's what I call lazy writing. I wish instead of baselessly using stereotypes, Bartel should've researched or just focus on the romance factor of the book. Definitely would've made it readable.
I mean she dropped the H all the way to India on a near useless task, only to highlight the pollution, uncleanliness and chaos of the city atleast once on every bloody para while he was there. (which wasn't for long. Thank God!)
And the book was already boring before that.
I would think thrice before picking up another of her book.

I wanted to give it 2 ✨ but docked one simply for the racist Delhi rant. Calling developing nations polluted dirty and shady is so out of touch especially when i’m sure the author has never stepped foot in Delhi. Like c’mon be serious now. Let’s be mindful about what we write in big 2023 (written in 2021 but ykwim)
Also, the military jargon was extreme and there was no chemistry between the leads. I was bored out of my mind and skimmed after about 70% of the book.
Having said that, I would read Ghost’s book if someone pointed me in the direction of which one is his because the blurbs for the books are all so damn confusing.

This just didn't work for me.
I didn't particularly like either of the lead characters. He was a complete asshole, and I just don't even have the words to express how stupid it was for him to take this depressed, destroyed 18 year old girl, who in rapid succession lost her dad and her brother, at her word when she asked him to leave her alone. For fuck's sake, at the time I would have worried she was suicidal. But this girl, who is wrecked, says "don't try to find me" and he - the 29 year old man who fucking knows better - leaves her utterly fucking alone in the world. Adrift, devastated, and having lost everything she ever loved. To me, that was all ego on his part, and fuck him. And he knew it was a dick move on his part, because everytime Zulu mentioned it, he became a super defensive asshole about it, snarling "I just did what she told me to do."
Friends can't always tell you when they need your help. Don't do that, don't abandon her, and then tell me you love her. Fuck that, and fuck him.
My problem with Maila/Emmy/Quinn/whatever-the-fuck-her-name-is is that she was utterly stupid and useless. I was excited when we found out she's CIA, thinking she was going to be a badass. But no. Her op is a shitshow, she has no plan, she's in a seriously dangerous situation, and she's fucking useless. She walked into it like a TSTL damsel, and then all she could do was wait to be rescued. Or raped. One or the other was pretty imminent. She'd snarl in her head that she was going to make the bad guy pay...but she was toothless, like a baby kitten hissing and spitting. It was utterly pathetic.
Her CIA arc was just nonsense. Look, lots of families have government service as the family business, and the government will happily gobble up anyone who enlists. I don't believe no one wanted to give her assignments because of who her dad is - if that was true, they'd never have recruited her. No, what I think is that no one wanted to give her assignments because she was fucking incompetent, but they gave her the job title of agent out of respect for the family name... And then bent over backwards to keep her out of any real ops because she's laughably terrible.
I didn't buy them together. I actually laughed when he bossed her around like a dickhead and she caved like she has a spine of wet toilet paper because she clearly just wanted to be a kept woman.
Bleh.
I didn't particularly like either of the lead characters. He was a complete asshole, and I just don't even have the words to express how stupid it was for him to take this depressed, destroyed 18 year old girl, who in rapid succession lost her dad and her brother, at her word when she asked him to leave her alone. For fuck's sake, at the time I would have worried she was suicidal. But this girl, who is wrecked, says "don't try to find me" and he - the 29 year old man who fucking knows better - leaves her utterly fucking alone in the world. Adrift, devastated, and having lost everything she ever loved. To me, that was all ego on his part, and fuck him. And he knew it was a dick move on his part, because everytime Zulu mentioned it, he became a super defensive asshole about it, snarling "I just did what she told me to do."
Friends can't always tell you when they need your help. Don't do that, don't abandon her, and then tell me you love her. Fuck that, and fuck him.

* How did the book make you feel?: I devoured this action-packed book. It was so good. The dedication at the back of the book about her son was gut-wrenching. My heart goes out to Bartel for her loss.

An ok read.
I liked the action and there were so many colorful and interesting characters. I also liked the protagonists’ past connection. Emotional scenes were done well.
Hero wasn’t celibate during separation nor was he a manwhore. And he was completely obsessed with heroine. So it didn’t bother me MUCH.
Recommended.

4 Adam and Emmy Stars
I am definitely into this series and it gets off to a strong start with the promise of much more to come. I read the prequel, Seal , and straight away jumped into the main novel, Alpha.
This story picks up on the cliffhanger and along the way we learn more about various other members of The Alpha Elite Team.
Adam is a full on alpha Hero - dark , brooding, dominant and determined. Emmy has changed in many ways from the young 18 year old in Seal but seven years on she is trying to move on from the life she left behind.
Lots of tension and pretty hot scenes too.
So why not 5 stars? At times there seemed to be a lot of different characters being introduced at once and each one is known by at least two names so I had to recap a couple of times to check I had the characters straight in my head. Also , I thought a couple of phrases were overused a little , for example I am now fully aware that Adam has blue eyes and he smells like 'cold wind and sharp angles'. That is all purely personal opinion though. Overall I really enjoyed this exciting, tense, low angst high heat romance and am definitely going to continue with this series.

This is a no for me and with it comes an understanding that this author might not work for me anymore.
First of, there was just way too much inner dialogue, descriptions and flashbacks that made it really boring. I skipped a whole lot.
And then there were several scenes that I had a hard time understanding.
She didn’t really seem to have a plan when it came to dealing with the sheik and therefore got herself into a hopeless situation where she was totally dependent on someone saving her ass. She’s been working on this case for several years, and this is how she ends up?

She was kidnapped, drugged and sexually harassed while unconscious, beaten up and then hurt while being rescued.....and he pressures her into having sex for the first time a few hours after finally reaching a safe destination. The fuck?
She had several breakdowns and he ends up trying to fix her with sex, even though he states that she should acknowledge her feelings and stop running away from her pain - he still goes ahead and seduces her. Being described in those moments as “the beast”. Creepy.
They also decide to not use protection their first time together (and as previously stated it’s her first time ever) because they want kids. Well, you have just met after years of being apart, she was almost killed a couple of hours earlier and you are in no way in a stable place in your relationship (or mental state) but sure - throw in an innocent baby.
He keeps using his company and employees for stupid shit and marking the situations as “critical” without it ever being anything near that. Example, she gets fired from being an agent and therefore looses her apartment, so he sends a bunch of his men to get her stuff moved from her place to his and stating that it’s critical when he’s asked if this is of priority. Why?
I found them both hard to like as a couple. He was made out to be alpha, but at times seemed a bit dumb and simple. I find it hard to believe that he would stay away for such a long time when she clearly wasn’t doing well. Yes, she had a job and an apartment, but he should’ve picked up the fact that she wasn’t really living. No friends. No family. No hobbies. No life. But still he stuck to an old promise she forced on him a couple of hours after losing her last family member.
She was supposed to be strong and independent, and in some ways she really was, but she had some serious mental issues. She seemed depressed and broken and I really think she needed to take some time away from everything and everyone and get some professional help. She was not ready to be in a relationship and became either clingy or a pushover with him.
I still think they should’ve ended up together, but she needed some time to heal and grieve first.
This was a disappointment to be honest. I’ve really loved several of this author’s previous books but I’m starting to believe that this world of security, military guys has run its course and it’s time for the author to move on to something else. But just my opinion.

I think Sybil may have just written my favorite book of hers in this new series she’s created. Those are big words to say when an author has a hefty backlist and not one of them can you give less than 4 stars to. If you know this author’s story, you can’t help but feel the pain and grief she’s experienced through her words, but like only she can, she turns that pain into beautiful art and gives us this amazing story of heartache, forgiveness, and healing. I hope you follow her journey in this new series because I can’t wait to read more! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I liked this one, pretty much in everything (especially the H - Adam "Alpha" Michael Trefor), kind of a mouthful, right?! LOL
yeah, well, he's known by his SEAL code name : ALPHA (and it suits him just fine *wink*)
Anyhow, I liked the story, I even liked the detailed combat situations and strategical movement in operation, that was kind of exciting as hell, even though we are all aware the grave danger this guys are putting themselves into...so, kudos, for that!
I loved the way ALPHA is protective and commanding all at once...and I liked the inner torment he had considering his somewhat inappropriate feelings towards the heroine (if you read it, you'll understand, so I won't go into dits about it)
I did roll my eyes on one major detail (also NOT spoiling it), BUT I usually have an issues with heroines like that LOL but here yeah, it was out there BUT, in spite my eye rolling tic, it didn't bother me THAT much, to be completely honest!
All in all, surprisingly well done, complex and complicated pent up military romance!
p.s. I really didn't know about the personal tragedy in this author's life and reading about it in her dedication, truly devastated me. My heart goes out to you, you are in my mind, my heart and my prayers!

Where do I start and where do I end it???
After reading everything by you, I thought I knew what to expect and love already, but this???
This is nowhere near than!! Not even by a millimetre!
The way she turned her life around was genially done and while he’s the same alpha in every possible way, you can feel all his love and angst with each page turned.
I loved the small childhood memories and how their beautiful love changed in time but in the best way.
Now I must admit that I have to apologise to my Viking husband because Alpha is everything that I didn’t knew I needed.
I’m scared to even make any theories for the next books in the series now because I already know I need them like air and water.

Self consciously serious
My first thought when I started reading this book was "These people take themselves way too seriously", and nothing in the story changed my mind. No one communicates clearly or concisely, no one really trusts or shows real loyalty to one another. She supposedly falls in love when she's five years old, he falls when she's still a teenager. Fast forward, He's a tough ex Navy SEAL who leaves the service due to an injury and somehow becomes a billionaire para military security CEO, she's CIA, although he doesn't know it. She gets herself mixed up with a trafficker and he rescues her. He finds out she's a virgin and takes her virginity in the most awkward, painful way. She says " No, I can't, this hurts, you hurt" And instead of him stopping or taking it easy, he replies "You need to feel the pain for me". Apparently having your hymen forcibly broken will make you feel alive when you've closed yourself off emotionally due to the tremendous losses you've suffered in your life. Never mind the pain she just suffered while held hostage and while being rescued. But then he puts a finger in her "forbidden hole", she has an O and apparently the heavens open and choirs sing and the "sex scented delivery of truth" brings her back to life. There is so much wordy hyperbole and metaphors that I literally started counting some of them. She describes his scent as "cold winds and sharp angles" NINE times. What dies that smell like, anyway? Must be similar to when he inhaled "her aloofness and the scent of memories." Just can't do any more of these..

This book! This author!
There are soo many things I want to say about both the author and the book!
It is the first in a new series of security operatives/ former military and Sybil Bartel can write an alpha military male like no other. I read all the books from her 3 other series; some more than once (Neil being a favourite of mine). Here we have a somewhat second chance, best friend's sister trope. But Sybil manages to make it so much more. I love the action scenes; the fast moving storyline and a jealous and possessive hero. But Sybil makes her heroines strong! They can totally stand on their own - and more, they own the H! Maila loses everything when her brother is the last of their family unit to pass. She is just 18 when this happens and gets locked in her grief. In my view, she is on a path of self-destruction although she - and later Adam - views it as a path of self-sacrifice. The amount of feeling that the author manages to impart in what is basically a good action/suspense romance boggles my mind. There are subtle subtexts and layers to this book that you can either fully appreciate or gloss over.
I know I am biased as Sybil writes the type of books I love, but that said, I highly recommend this book.
I do have one complaint though. It is totally my personal opinion, but I did not like the cover. There was just something off-putting about the small eyes (semi-closed?) of the cover model. Not sure if it was editing the picture to have the electrifying blue stare of Adam, or something else, but it just does not work.

I love Sybil Bartel books. She writes heroes that kick ass and the heroines who could tame them but don't--because they like their men wild. This book had all the action, suspense, and sexual tension I've come to expect from Ms. Bartel, but it also had a lot of heavy, confusing emotions that weighed down the story. Yes, I understand that there is some heartache, that Emmy fears losing another person she loves, but I think she went way too far down the rabbit hole of ridiculous emotional defensiveness (she killed all happiness and hope) that she became too much of a black spot in her own romance. Toward the end, I kind of wished Adam would find someone easier and more appreciative of him to live an HEA with. Emmy spent so much time pushing emotion, Adam, all possible happiness away, that it left little room for the lightness that comes with resolution.
This book was sexy, well-written, and nail-biting. But it was also morose and lacked that uplifting happiness suspense romances need to make the reader feel like the hero/heroine are actually getting their HEA.

I really like Sybil Bartel’s alphas but one thing that usually annoys me is that the characters talk in circles and never really answer the questions asked and this one did it SO MUCH!!
She threw his past in his face (he deserved it) he completely skips over the questions and she lets him!! Grrrr!
He never tells her or explains or apologizes why he was sleeping around if he was so in love with her.
Oh and the book never answers the question of who sent the text that burned her cover.
The whole thing just feels rushed and like someone keeps pressing fast forward in the good parts and slows down the tedious parts.

I really wanted to like it but the separation was too long and dumb. The H was supposed to be an Alpha but really didn’t act like it. The h was also so bland and stupid to insist on doing a very dangerous job that could not only put her but others in danger. I’m all for women who can take care of themselves but some choices are just dumb. It was frankly so painful to finish as I kept on hoping that the story or the writing would improve. They don’t even really get together until the book is about to end. What a waste of time.

Wow. Talk about book hangover! Why do I feel like I’m reeling and yet Sybil has so much more for us in this series. Adam “Alpha” Trefor and Maila are some of the best but most stubborn second chance Romance characters you’ll met. This may be a slow burn by some standards but when the heat turns up it’s all Alpha as we’d expect from our dear Sybil (pun intended). If you haven’t read her other boys yet, go grab them while you’re waiting for the next AES to hit the stands!

Sybil Bartel always does a fantastic job of writing ex-military Alphas and "Alpha", the first book in her newest Series, is no exception! I loved the premise of this book and the intriguing dialogue and smart storyline only made me want to read it more. If you love best friend's sister, age-gap, friends to lovers, ex-military, contemporary, or security romance, with strong, sexy men, and smart, bad-a$$ women, this book will check every box on your list! 5 Fantastic Stars!
