This is the first book from C.Radhakrishnan that I read. It was 15 years ago and I was very raw with my outlook about the world. A friend lended me this book and I started reading it in one evening. By around midnight I reached the core of the book and I was so fascinated by the book that I skipped my sleep and finished it by around five clock or so in the morning. Often I felt choked due to the emotions, I was overwhelmed by the brilliance of the philosophy, I was biting my nails thinking about what would happen at each turn of the page and finally it came to an end with some brilliant finalization.

The protagonist, with many shades of the author, works in a newspaper that is run by a never-compromising editor (his name is never revealed, or it is not important). Once the editor asks the protagonist to go and collect the life story of an elusive revolutionist. He gets the collection and reads this in the same night and thus the story of the revolutionist is revealed to us. The protagonist is blown away by the story and so will us. The subsequent publication of the story in the newspaper results in lot of controversy. However, the publication itself was only a part of the grand scheme of things and the protagonist also gets dragged into the plot, but he doesn't regret it though. There are many real life political characters appearing in this. The villain has many shades of a controversial character who was the son of a prime minister.

Even though it can be read as a political thriller, I was mainly fascinated by the brilliance of the Advaitha philosophy presented in this book. This and further C.R books on 'navakam' series had sent me exploring the ideas about the Advaitha philosophy proclaimed by the Geetha for 3-4 years. I was still on the formation years of my own philosophy of life. This book might have influenced my philosophy here and there. At least many of my decisions about my career were indirectly affected by this.

Anyway, in the recent past the Advaitha philosophy and the Hinduism is grossly misused by many vested elements and all this has made me to feel guilty in going after this in my early youth. I'm even very reluctant to admit that I had any admiration for this (philosophy, not the book. fiction is fiction and politics is politics) at some point of time in my life. I liked most of the books written by C.R even they all cooked out from the same recycled material, often with very shallow characters and cheesy situations. If he had written only three books (this, spandamaapinikale.., ullil ullathu) maybe he would have been classified as a very good writer.

സി. രാധാകൃഷ്ണന്റെ നോവൽ നവകത്തിലെ ഏറ്റവും പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടത് എന്ന് പറയാവുന്നതാണ് മുൻപേ പറക്കുന്ന പക്ഷികൾ എന്ന ഏഴാമത്തെ ഈ നോവൽ. അനൗദ്യോഗികമായി പറയുകയാണെങ്കിൽ നോവൽ നവകത്തിനുള്ളിലെ അർജുനൻ ത്രയത്തിലെ ആദ്യ നോവൽ. അർജുനൻ എന്ന യുവവിപ്ലവകാരിയുടെ കഥ ഇവിടെ തുടങ്ങുന്നു. അർജുനനോടൊപ്പം മനസ്സിനെ ആഴത്തിൽ സ്പർശിക്കുന്ന ഒരുകൂട്ടം മനുഷ്യരുടെയും. ഇതിനു മുന്നേ ഇവിടെ എല്ലാവർക്കും തന്നെ യിലാണ് നമ്മൾ അപ്പുവിന്റെ വളരെ ചെറിയ സാമീപ്യം മാത്രമുള്ളൊരു കഥ വായിച്ചത്. അതുവരെയും പരമ്പരയെ മുന്നോട്ടു കൊണ്ടുപോയിരുന്നത് അപ്പുവായിരുന്നു. അയാളിപ്പോൾ ഒരു പത്രപ്രവർത്തകനാണെന്ന് മുൻ നോവലുകളിൽ പറഞ്ഞിട്ടുണ്ട്. അതിനാൽ അപ്പുവെന്ന പത്രപ്രവർത്തകനിലൂടെയാണ് ഈ കഥയും ആരംഭിക്കുന്നത്, അയാളുടെ സഹായത്തോടെയാണ് കഥ മുന്നോട്ടുപോകുന്നതും. ഡൽഹി, കൽക്കത്ത എന്നീ മഹാനഗരങ്ങളും കാടും മേടും മലയും പുഴയും വരെ ഭൂമികയായി വരുന്നുണ്ട്.

ഒരു പത്രസ്ഥാപനത്തിൽ ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്ന അപ്പുവിനെ ഒരു സുപ്രധാനദൗത്യത്തിനായി ‘കാരണവർ’ (എന്നുമാത്രം നമ്മൾ വായനക്കാർ അറിയുന്ന പത്രാധിപർ) അയക്കുന്നതോടെയാണ് കഥയാരംഭിക്കുന്നത്. തലയ്ക്ക് വലിയ വില പാരിതോഷികം പ്രഖ്യാപിക്കപ്പെട്ട അർജുനൻ എന്ന യുവവിപ്ലവകാരിയുടെ ഡയറി അപ്പുവിന്റെ കൈയ്യിൽ എത്തിപ്പെടുന്നതാണ് ദൗത്യത്തിന്റെ പരിണതഫലം. തുടർന്നങ്ങോട്ട് അപ്പു അർജുനന്റെ ഇരുപത്തിയഞ്ചു വർഷത്തെ ഡയറിക്കുറിപ്പുകളാണ് നോവലിന്റെ പ്രധാന ഉള്ളടക്കം. അതിനാൽത്തന്നെ ഈ നോവൽ രണ്ടു പേരുടെ വീക്ഷണകോണിലൂടെയാണ് വായിക്കേണ്ടത്. കഥയുടെ പരിസരമായ വർത്തമാനകാലത്തെ ‘ഞാനും’ പിന്നെ കഥയ്ക്കുള്ളിലെ കഥയിലെ ‘ഞാനും’. ആദ്യത്തേത് അപ്പുവും രണ്ടാമത്തേത് അർജുനനും.

അമ്മ ഊർമ്മിള, അനിയത്തി അനുരാധ എന്നിവരടങ്ങുന്നതാണ് അർജുനന്റെ കുടുംബം. ചില പ്രത്യേക കാരണങ്ങളാൽ അച്ഛൻ ഡോ. അഗസ്റ്റ്യൻ ഫെർണാണ്ടസുമായി അകന്നു കഴിയുകയാണ് അവർ. തൊട്ടരികിലെ വീട്ടിൽ അവർക്ക് സഹായമായി അമ്മയുടെ കൂട്ടുകാരി ഊർമ്മിളയും മകൾ ആരുണിയും, പട്ടാളത്തിൽ നിന്നും എന്നെങ്കിലും അവധിക്കു വരുന്ന, അർജുനൻ ചെറിയച്ഛനെന്നു വിളിക്കുന്ന, ആരുണിയുടെ അച്ഛനും. അർജുനനും ആരുണിയും ചെറുപ്പം മുതൽക്കേ മാനസികമായി ഒരടുപ്പമുണ്ട്. പഠിപ്പിൽ മിടുക്കനും നല്ല വായനാശീലവുമുള്ള അർജുനൻ വിദ്യാർത്ഥിയായിരിക്കെത്തന്നെ വിപ്ലവപ്രസ്ഥാനത്തിലേക്ക് ആകർഷിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. നഗരവാസികളായ അർജുനനും കൂട്ടുകാരും ഗ്രാമപ്രദേശങ്ങളിലെ അടിച്ചമർത്തലുകളും ചൂഷണങ്ങളും ചോദ്യം ചെയ്യുകയും അതിന്റെ ഫലമായുണ്ടായ ലഹളകളിൽ ഇല്ലാത്ത കൊലപാതകക്കുറ്റം വരെ ചാർത്തപ്പെട്ട കുറ്റവാളിയായി ദീർഘകാലം ഒളിവിൽ പോവേണ്ടി വരികയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. മകന്റെ അവസ്ഥയറിഞ്ഞ് അച്ഛൻ കുടുംബത്തോട് ചേരുന്നു. അർജുനന്റെ അഭാവത്തിൽ അമ്മാവനായ ചന്ദ്രു അയച്ച ഗുണ്ടകൾ വീട്ടിൽക്കയറി അനുരാധയൊഴികെയുള്ള അവന്റെ കുടുംബത്തെ വെട്ടിക്കൊലപ്പെടുത്തുകയും, ആരുണിയെ ക്രൂരബലാത്സംഗത്തിനിരയാക്കി ജീവച്ഛവമാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. മനസ്സ് ഇത്തിരിയെങ്കിലും വേദനയിൽ കൊളുത്തിവലിക്കാതെ തുടർഭാഗങ്ങൾ വായിക്കാൻ കഴിയില്ല. തുടർന്നങ്ങോട്ട് അർജുനൻ എന്ന തീവ്രവിപ്ലവകാരിയുടെ പ്രതികാരവും വിപ്ലവപ്രവർത്തനങ്ങളും പറഞ്ഞുകൊണ്ട് ഡയറി തീരുന്നു. വീണ്ടും വർത്തമാനകാലത്തിലേയ്ക്ക്, അപ്പുവിലേയ്ക്ക്.

അർജുനന്റെ ഡയറി അപ്പുവിന്റെ പത്രം ഖണ്ഡശ്ശ: പ്രസിദ്ധീകരിക്കാൻ തുടങ്ങുന്നു. അനുരാധ ആരുണിയുടെ ചികിത്സയ്ക്കായി നഗരത്തിലെത്തുന്നു. അവൾ താൽക്കാലികമായി ആ സ്ഥാപനത്തിൽ പത്രറിപ്പോർട്ടർ ആയി ജോലിയാരംഭിക്കുന്നു.കഥ മുന്നോട്ട് പോകെപ്പോകെ വളരെ ശക്തയായൊരു കഥാപാത്രമായി അനുരാധ മാറുന്നതും കാണാം. ഒരുപാട് രാഷ്ട്രീയ സാമൂഹിക കാര്യങ്ങൾ വന്നുപോകുന്നുണ്ട് കഥയിൽ. പത്രപ്രവർത്തനത്തിലെ രാഷ്ട്രീയ ഇടപെടലുകൾ വളരെ വ്യക്തമായി കാണാൻ കഴിയും. നമ്മുടെ മുന്നിലെ കഥാപാത്രങ്ങൾക്കിടയിലെവിടെയോ അർജുനൻ മറഞ്ഞിരിപ്പുണ്ടെന്ന തോന്നലുണ്ടാവാം. അതാണ് ഈ നോവലിന്റെ സുഖകരമായൊരു വശം. അർജുനൻ, അമ്മമാരായ രണ്ട് ഊർമ്മിളമാർ, അനുരാധ, ആരുണി, കാരണവർ, ചെറിയച്ഛൻ, നിഖിൽ, ജഗന്നാഥ് എന്നിവർ മലയാളത്തിലെ മികച്ച കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളോടൊപ്പം എക്കാലവും ഓർക്കപ്പെടും.

യാഥാർത്ഥകഥയെ സാരമായി സ്പർശിക്കുന്ന യാതൊന്നും ഞാനിവിടെ കുറിച്ചിട്ടില്ല, അതിനു സാധ്യവുമല്ല. ഉപരിതലത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഒരു തുള്ളിമാത്രമേ ഇവിടെ ഞാൻ പങ്കുവെച്ചിട്ടുള്ളൂ. ഒരു നല്ല വായന പ്രതീക്ഷിച്ചുനിൽക്കുന്നവർ മടിക്കേണ്ട, നിങ്ങളെ ഈ നോവൽ നിരാശരാക്കില്ല. കാലത്തിനും മുന്നേ ചിന്തിച്ചു, പ്രവർത്തിച്ചു, പരിണമിച്ചു, മറ്റുള്ളവർക്കും മുൻപേ പറന്നുതുടങ്ങിയ ഈ മനുഷ്യർ വീഴ്ചയുടെയും ഉയിർത്തെഴുന്നേല്പിന്റെയും സഹനത്തിന്റെയും പോരാട്ടത്തിന്റെയും നിലനില്പിന്റെയും നേർച്ചിത്രമായി എന്നും നമ്മുടെ ആകാശത്തിൽ പ്രതീക്ഷയുടെ പക്ഷികളായി പറന്നുകൊണ്ടേയിരിക്കും.

മുമ്പേ പറക്കുന്ന പക്ഷികൾ... ഇത്രയും കാലം ഞാൻ കാണാതെ പോയ അറിയാതെ പോയ എഴുത്തുകാരനാണ് സി രാധാകൃഷ്ണൻ. ഇത്രത്തോളം അറിവുള്ള ജീനിയസായ ഒരു എഴുത്തുകാരൻ മലയാളത്തിലുണ്ടോ എന്ന് തോന്നിപ്പോകുന്നു. ചേറിൽ ഒളിഞ്ഞിരിക്കുന്ന സ്വർണനാണയം അതാണ് മലയാള സാഹിത്യത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം. ഉപരിതലത്തിൽ നമ്മൾ കാണുന്നതും ചർച്ച ചെയ്യപെടുന്നതിനുമപ്പുറം മറ്റൊരിടത്തു സ്വന്തമായി ലോകമുണ്ടാക്കുകയാണ് അദ്ദേഹം.

തുടക്കത്തിൽ അർജുനൻ എന്ന കുട്ടിയും യുവാവും പിന്നീട് വിപ്ലവകാരിയും ആയി മാറുന്ന ജീവിതയാത്ര. മധ്യഭാഗത്തിനപ്പുറം ഒരു മാധ്യമസ്ഥാപനം നേരിടേണ്ടി വരുന്ന പ്രതിസന്ധികളും. കൃത്യമായി അടുക്കും ചിട്ടയോടുമുള്ള എഴുത്തു. 38 ആം അദ്ധ്യായത്തിൽ ഒരു മുനിയോട് സംസാരിക്കുന്ന ഭാഗം ഏറ്റവും ഗംഭീരമാണെന്നു പറയേണ്ടതുണ്ട്. പല ആവർത്തി വായന ആവശ്യപെടുന്ന നോവലാണ്.

Story is narrated by an u named editor of a newspaper. Story starts with narrator getting diary of a revolutionary named Arjun. Novel takes through various emotions, philosophy, politics and ends in very unpredictable way. Was as thrilling as as watching a thriller movie. There can be various opinions about philosophy or politics in this novel, but overall this is a classic andust read Novel.

First Among Equals – A review of the novel ‘Birds That Fly Ahead’

Author C. Radhakrishnan’s novel ‘Birds That Fly Ahead’ is another book in a series centered around a lead protagonist chronicling the class struggle led by a left leaning extremist movement that mowed through India decades ago and the remnants of which can still be seen today in various trickles and forms. Arjun is a revolutionary, the state has charged him with various cases of murder and heists. But what is the truth? Did he commit all those murders as they claim? Can the murders and violence he perpetrated ever be justified? And if he’s not to blame, then who should be held accountable? These are some of the questions we seek answers to in this epic novel saddling both philosophical and political reverberations with ease.

The change in the mood of the narrative shifts dramatically with changes in the story, like a three act play you will see your own mood shift from end to the other while progressing through the set-up, the confrontation and eventual resolution. There’s also some wonderful dialogue writing in the book and this back and forth between characters is captivating to listen to. Some may call it a tad superficial, sure but when you are creating this magical narrative on paper, such illusions will have a bit of artificiality to them. But it will still leave you mesmerized and in awe of the language and the beauty of thoughts expressed. The best thing about Kairali Narayanan’s translation is that she has been able to absorb and present in entirety the earthy beauty of the author’s prose from Malayalam word for word.

Arjun is a byproduct of his circumstances and fate, he grows up quickly than his peers, his evolution speeded up as necessitated by the need to find a solution and escape from the life handed down to him. There’s an interesting array of secondary characters that provide stability and wholeness to the story. The author himself appears as the narrator/journalist who becomes the ears and mouth of the reader, hearing what Arjun has to say and asking him whatever’s on our mind. The three Urmilas’ along with Anuradha reveal the strength and complexity of womanhood and the echelon of love these species are capable of. The editor, the professor and the tribal headman form the trifecta of patriarchal wisdom and knowledge, their philosophical diatribes also reveal the writer’s mind and his attitude towards life. Their disclosures are as good any that you find in the eastern or western school of philosophy.

Though not discriminatory, the book’s narrative might be able to weave its magic among only a section of the audience even after it’s rebirth in the English language. Because Birds That Fly Ahead isn’t just a simple novel dealing with a sole emotion, it’s an epic book with mighty ambitions that makes you think hard and deep about life and one which succeeds in portraying hard hitting and raw emotions.

It is one of those books which helped to shape my world view, especially the political one. It talks about the Indian political situation, or maybe that part attracts me the most. I somehow become a fan of this writer after reading this novel. Good piece of work indeed.
