probably the last book i've read this year. this is by Meng Xi Shi, the same author who wrote 无双 Peerless , 千秋 Qian Qiu and others... i was kinda disappointed by this book because it doesn't match her usual standard? i even started wondering if i had the correct edition but as far as i can tell this is it.
plot: set in shanghai during the 1900s, when rich families wield a lot of power and corruption/bribery etc. are rampant and opium addiction is a problem. the two main characters are Lin Shu and Yue Dingtang. they used to know each other during high school, but went their separate paths. they meet again when the book opens, when Lin Shu becomes the most likely suspect for the death of his ex-girlfriend and Yue Dingtang is called in by the police to consult on the case.
this novel is basically a detective/mystery/suspense novel set in modern times. it's a bit similar to 默读 in terms of the structure - four arcs, each arc covering a complicated case that the two characters have to figure out and solve - but imo Mo Du was much better written.
the good: - the cases were very well written. they were very suspenseful and i was on the edge of my seat waiting to find out exactly what was going on. i was often creeped out and would get book 'jumpscares' from the plot twists
- characterization: i loved the main characters, loved their families, loved their bickering and the side characters. i only wish i could have seen them more
the bad: - abrupt transitions between scenes and cases, some details unexplained, ending was VERY abrupt, overall the whole book felt very rushed. it's really not on par with her usual work, i don't know why. the first 20-30 chapters are good, but it starts getting a bit rushed after that.
- also, i'm not sure if it was my ebook formatting or not but there were a lot of single sentence paragraphs which made the writing style seem really clunky and simplistic. the book didn't flow well
overall: i definitely liked reading this, but it honestly feels like an unpolished first draft. it's a 3.5 star but i'm bumping it up a bit for the potential. i feel like this would be much better with some rewriting
i've had this book since 2020 and i tried previously to read it but failed at around 10% because the setting gave me indigestion. i didn't read the summary before getting the book so the 1930s shanghai setting seriously stunned me into ignoring it until this year (●'◡'●)
i haven't read danmei in so long. but even if i'm out of touch i know that THIS WASN'T THE DANMEI IT PROMISED!!! there were absolutely no romantic interactions between the two leads until around 70% into the book where one suddenly professed their love for the other. that being said, the storyline was intriguing and i couldn't stop reading as it peaked to the climax. and the writing was good. i just felt that the plot could be better developed from the start to the middle of the book rather than suddenly ramping up so much at the back!
very nice character development, mature characters who wouldn't do everything for love, in fact they did so little that i hardly knew they were in love until the end. i think it was only until this ^ explicit explanation that i understood why bei dou, this entire book was for ling shu
the ending really took me up and down, first writing that ling shu shot himself and then revealing that was what he saw himself do under hypnosis, and then seemingly yue dingtang almost died but it was just ling shu over-reacting?! throughout this i thought i got scammed into a BE and my brain was just: IF BE, THEN MODERN AU!!! also, the ending was quite abrupt, it ended at the weird cult place like did they not go back to reality? alright i haven't read the extras but extras should just be extras
overall an ok book to read if you've cleared the major danmei works, good writing, exciting plot, just not enough danmei. for danmei crime books, i still prefer the one by priest (o゜▽゜)o☆ weeee
So I don't think this was as strong as her most famous three novels, but I really enjoyed the fact that it was a really different setting (Republican Shanghai). I liked the main couple okay, but the romance is never the focus of her novels, so it wasn't surprising that they were missing some of the epic-ness of Thousand Autumns' or Peerless' couples. The mysteries were okay, but the through-arc didn't really make a lot of sense (and the scenes with the cult were kind of silly).
"Volvamos a conocernos ¿De acuerdo?
