Gosho Aoyama (青山剛昌) is a Japanese manga artist. He is best known as the creator of the manga series Detective Conan (known in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom as Case Closed).
Aoyama made his debut as a manga artist with the work Chotto Matte which was published in the weekly magazine Shōnen Sunday on winter of 1987. Shortly after that, another work by Aoyama, Magic Kaito, was published on the same magazine.
I've always admired Kaito kid and I waited for his appearance in every episode.. but I never knew his history and how he became phantom thief. ---- I can't stop myself from asking about the relation between Kaito and Shinichi.. it's not coincidence that they look like each other!! anyhow, Gosho said he will stop Conan manga until he finish Kaito's .. that's why I started reading it
This manga is very cute and I love kaito. That person is very good I really like that he tries to do something for a purpose even if he does not understand anything. His character is very cool The author's art is also good Totally great
Placeholder for an entire series though it's still ongoing. Currently at chapter 39. (5 volumes and 3 chapters)
This is such a fun and sweet read. I love Kaito so much. It would be a lot more fun if I hadn't spoiled myself with watching the anime beforehand but it's still fun nonetheless.
Love The Sun Halo and The Boy who bet on the Ball chapter. Those two are definitely my fav.
Cute books, very old style humor (like innocently joking about the color of girl’s panties… you know 80s stuff 😅). The adventures get more ingesting but definitely way sillier and fantasy than the Conan books. Makes me wonder if they’re even the same world (which I think they’re supposed to be)!
[Review is up to Chapter 33, manga is still ongoing]
Aoyama-sensei is famed for his manga Detective Conan. But before that he had drawn other manga, one of which was Magic Kaito. In fact he actually stopped drawing Kaito when he started on Conan and only picked it up again much later, and now the characters intermingle with each other, making appearances in each other's stories.
Kaito is about Kuroba Kaito whose father was a famous magician cum phantom thief (à la Arsène Lupin, Gentleman-Thief) who would send a note to his target to inform when he would be taking what he wanted. When his father was murdered, Kaito took over the role of the phantom thief in order to find out who killed his father and why.
When the manga first started out, it had a very relaxed tone and pace. Kaitou was a high school student after all, so he did have to study even if at night he would go a-thieving. Unlike Conan which needed a lot of brain work, Kaitou's trick was not that much of a trick and he depended a lot on his luck (and the stupidity of the police force...). So Kaitou twaddled around pulling pranks on his childhood friend, Ako.
I wasn't even born when Aoyama-sensei started drawing Kaito. When I was 17, the tankobon finally returned. Imagine that. By that time, Kaito had adapted the style Conan used all along - intricate tricks, psychology, and science, science, science. If Kaito remained as it originally was, it would not have a long lifetime. As it is, Kaito probably will continue after Conan is finally over (like seriously, it has to be over some time right?).
Now that the focus has shifted from the characters (I say characters, not character development, which are two totally different things), the plot has started to progress. Which means there is less Aoko, yay! Despite her character design being so similar to Ran, her relationship to Kaito is more like Kazuha and Heiji than Ran and Shinichi. They fight all the time and by God, I hate fighting 'couples', be it in Korean drama or real life. Also she is loud, seemingly shallow, and has the personality of a five-year-old. What saddens me is unfortunately, less focus on characters means less focus on Saguru Hakuba as well.
Hakuba was supposed to be the archenemy of Kaito the Phantom Thief, the way Sherlock Holmes was the nemesis of Professor Moriarty, or more befittingly maybe, like Herlock Sholmes who was more than willing to be the downfall of Lupin's (don't ask me about that name, ask Maurice Leblanc). But this was Kaito's story, if he was caught he would not be the elusive thief anymore. So Hakuba was made to be a very intelligent young detective, slightly cocky because of his upbringing, but even tough he was smart enough to figure out some of Kaito's tricks, he was always one step behind Kaito. And now that the worlds of Conan and Kaito have been suffused into one, Hakuba has sadly been relegated to a less important seat so the place of nemesis can be taken over by Shinichi Kudo. Still smart, but also mostly the eye candy factor, being blond of mixed blood.
Also, Akako. The second female lead in this manga. She is a witch who knows real magic, so how that will be integrated into the combined world of Conan and Kaito which is based on cold hard logic, is yet to be discovered. By using her charm she manages to put all guys under her spell, but Kaito for some reasons, is untouchable. Which is why she is determined to get him. But she does seem to have a soft spot for Kaito, saving his neck a couple of times and keeping track of his thievery. She is of a calmer deposition, cunning, and smart. Maybe she is not a 'good' girl, but I prefer her over Aoko the dunderhead, unless Aoyama-sensei gives the chance for Aoko to develop a personality thicker than an A4 paper.
Currently this manga is still ongoing and the updates are far between. But I accept that because I am hoping that when Conan is over, Shinichi and co. will make more cameos in Kaito. That way I can have Aoyama-sensei's works accompanying me from my childhood to my old age, yay.
If you have ever read Gosho Aoyama's more well-known manga, Detective Conan/Case Closed , the charming Phantom Thief Kid makes numerous appearances in a lot of Conan's cases. Magic Kaito was made before Detective Conan and is kind of like the origin story for the infamous phantom thief.
This manga was so much fun to read! Every page was filled with so much action and comedy, that I really enjoyed reading it. However, there wasn't really much plot progression in this volume and I felt like I was reading mostly about the misadventures of Phantom Thief Kid.
The main character, Kaito Kuroba, is absolutely adorable and I adore him to pieces. He's charming, goofy, a bit of a pervert, but you can tell he's a good kid. Kaito is a magician just like his father, and uses his magic for pranks--pranks his childhood friend, Aoko Nakamura doesn't put up with ;). He and Aoko have a bickering relationship, the kind where they can trade insults and where it's perfectly acceptable for one of them to try to hit the other with a mop during class.
By the end of the first chapter, Kaito inherits his family's secret and adapts to it pretty well. He really shows his resourcefulness and cleverness at moments when he really needs to. I just wish there was more information or motive given about Kaito's family secret since it's such a crucial part of the plot. Hopefully this would be explained further in the series.
All in all, Magic Kaito is a very fun light-hearted read. I will most definitely be reading the next volume.
Baca nih komik pas jaman SMP. Aku ingat KID pernah muncul di Conan nomer 16. Hihi.... dulu waktu aku masih jadi penggila Conan aku hapal semua cerita dari seluruh serinya. Jika kamu tanya conan nomer berapa aku pasti hapal bagaimana sinopsisnya.
I figured this would be where we would end up - because I remember not liking it. Don't get me wrong - this is fun. But simply not for me. I do love Kaito though and really like Aoko. And will read the other manga and hopefully like those more. As some of them were written 20+ years after this Volume^^
The fact that Gosho officially says in here that we should see this as a parallel universe because Akako doesn't belong in the Detective Conan World ♥ YEEEES ♥
I am currently onto Volume 2 and it's already MUCH better and much more fun so that's great! I am also simple dying for Saguru to come in let's be real here.
One of my favorites of all times. It is truly amazing. I can't remember how many times I've laughed in this manga. Very inspiring and it'll will surely never leave you. Up until now, I'm hang over-ed with this manga.
Definitely not as good as Detective Conan, but I think this one may have been written first. They're quite a few logical gaps here, which is a bit surprising considering how much Aoyama focuses on logic in Detective Conan, but still fun.
