Fire's Edge #5

The Traitor

Rate this book
Decades ago, rogue dragon shifter Rune Abaddon took a stand against the decaying, corrupt systems governing their people. He now uses his bad-ass reputation to protect the innocent as it all comes crashing down. But he’s pushed the limits one too many times. His hideout is destroyed, his few allies are scattered and hiding, and the Alliance has placed a dead-or-alive bounty on his head, making him the most wanted dragon in the western hemisphere.

And then the most enticing woman he’s ever met barges into his mountain, demanding an audience.

Hadyn Reece's future was ripped away long ago. The man fated to be her mate was murdered alongside her parents before Hadyn was old enough to be turned, leaving her to be raised and trained by her dead mate’s parents in the dragon shifter world. Now, the Alliance has come for the only family she has left. It’s a good thing she was raised by dragons, because the only one who can help her save them is a traitor she’d be smart to fear.

Especially when his dragon decides she’s theirs.

Favorite Quote: “I knew she was going to be trouble the second I saw her.”

The heroine: Hayden Reece - a human woman whose adoptive parents were dragon shifters. Her fated mate was killed when she was 10 years old along with her human parents. She was raised by his parents who were rogue dragon shifters.

The Hero(es): Rune Abaddon - one of the first black dragons selected to be enforcers in the colonies. Rune was one of the Huracán enforcers until he turned rogue and left the team to rebel against the clans and the mating council. He was branded a traitor and is to be killed on site if found.

The story: Rune’s band of rogue shifters and the fated mates they were protecting have left the mountains in Argentina where he has been based for the last ten years when he finds Hayden climbing the mountain in search of him. Her adoptive parents have been taken by Alaz enforcers and she needs his help to save them.

Rune and Hayden travel to from Argentina to the Pacific Northwest, the mountain stronghold of Rune’s former team, the Huracán enforcers where they ask for help from the enforcers and the local populations of dragon shifters. The guys from the previous books in this series and their mates all have roles in this book and it is nice to see they aren’t at odds with Rune like they were in the earlier books.

The chemistry between Rune and Hayden is off the charts even though she lost her fated mate at a young age and is not able to be a mate to Rune. Dragon’s only have one fated mate and part of the mating ritual is for the dragon to breathe fire into the potential mate. If they are wrong about being mates, the female will die. If they are mates, the female becomes a dragon shifter.

The mating council has been pairing high ranking clan members with all the potential mates that are found despite knowing many are likely not to be mates to those dragons, so a lot of the potential mates are dying and Rune has been saving them for years and now many of the other dragon shifters in the colonies are finally realizing he was never a traitor but a protector.

The different storylines were all great and the struggles the dragons are having with the alliance seems to me to be quite similar in many ways to what happened with Humans in the Americas. How they left their homes in Europe and came to America and decided they no longer want to answer to a king so far away.

In this case all the dragon clans in the old country are separated by color, with each having their own king and one high king, but in the colonies there are dragons of every color living together. It is more of a melting pot.

Just a good, fun ride!

A sweet and sexy romance between two individuals who desperately try to fight their attraction to each other.

Characters:
Hayden:
Smart, empathic, and headstrong, she never lets the fact that she is human, stop her from doing everything in her power to help the dragon parents' she loves. That determination results in her arriving at Rune's doorstep. Thanks to her upbringing she knows far more about dragon-kind than a mortal should. And so, she is not the least bit bothered or intimidated by Rune's tough exterior. She sees past the armor to the man underneath.

Rune: "The Traitor"
He is villainized by many of his kind for keeping mates from the mating council, and supposedly stealing them for himself. But nothing could be further from the truth. Though his methods might leave something to be desired, he is well-intentioned, doing what he believed to be right even if the rest of his kind held it against him. He's essentially always been a martyr, sacrificing himself and his reputation for the greater good. It is only after meeting Hayden that he finally seems to want something for himself.

Hayden spent almost her whole life with the knowledge that she'd lost her mate long before he could claim her. Rune, jaded by the truth of a corrupt system and the sting of betrayal, was never looking for a mate. But, naturally, fate had other plans for them both.

Overall, yet another entertaining edition to this straightforward, HEA guaranteed, shifter series. Shame that this is the final book in the series because I definitely would have tuned in for more.

ARC from NetGalley. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Huge thank you to the publishers Entangled: Amara for providing me with a copy to read and review!

Rune Abaddon turned his back on being an enforcer when he realized that potential female mates were being killed when those in power decided to try and turn them against their will and mate to them dragon males who were not their mates. If a female tries to mate a male who is not her mate, she will die when he breathes his dragon fire into her. So Rune let his people and his friends think that he was stealing mates and keeping them, when he was actually keeping them safe until they could find their true mates.

When Hadyn Reece's adoptive parents are kidnapped, she does what her father had taught her to do, she went in search of Rune to get his help. Haydn had been a potential mate but her mate had died along with her biological parents before they were old enough to try and mate. His parents took her in and she's been with them ever since. So when dragon shifters come and kidnap her parents, she knows only one thing to do, get help. Rune isn't sure about her story and he's skeptical about her at first but they do finally come to an understanding and he agrees to help her. But things go terribly wrong when they go to save her parents and Rune realizes that he needs more help than he thought.

I really thought that this was going to be the end for Rune and his friends at one point but then he makes a fast about turn and decides to change tactics to make sure that their secret doesn't get out to the humans, it makes other dragon shifters from the opposing side look differently at him and this story takes a turn that I never saw coming.

I've been reading this series since the beginning and I've loved this series, the characters, the storylines, pretty much everything. But I will say that this story made my cry at one point, the heartbreak was real and deep with this book. There's no shortage of action, drama and romance, these characters come alive while reading and really draws you into the story. Rune deserved a happy ending and I'm glad he finally got one.

Disclosure: I was given an e-ARC of this book via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Rune has been "stealing" mates for years and the Council is out to get him. Hayden, a mate, comes to him for help. Together they take a stand with the rest of the good guys in the America's. Lots of drama, angst, friends, and sexy times. Now what's going to happen with the kings?

Another awesome book added to the fire’s edge series.

Rune & Hadyn’s story…. I seriously could not get enough of these two.
Rune has been a traitor for the past decade. He has been trying to save the innocent but of course going against your governing system is going to cause some problems… We have been getting bits and pieces of Rune thought out this series and now we finally have a book all to himself. You can’t help yourself but feel for this guy. He is smart, broody, sexy, an alpha with a good heart. He has lost so much… his team, his friends and family, his hideout and so much more. But with everything going on he still remains strong and continues to do what is right.

Hadyn is basically the female version of Rune. Smart, beautiful, witty, loyal and strong. She is everything that Rune needed in his life. She is on a mission to save her adopted parents who is technically her dead mates parents. She has also lost so much in her life. She finally goes to Rune for help in rescuing her parents and that’s when her world centers around Rune.

They are just so cute with each other. I loved every part of this story and let me tell you what a story it is! I absolutely loved how this book adds on to larger picture and combines everything that is going on in the dragon shifter world. Seeing the corruption for the Huracán enforcers side and seeing how they fight the larger war bits and pieces at a time is just amazing. The chemistry between Rune and Hadyn is seriously off the chart and also very steamy.

I absolutely loved how Abigail connected Fire’s edge and Inferno Rising and ALSO mentioning Brimstone Inc. I totally cried with some parts and still am shocked about certain events.
I seriously cannot wait for her next book which is part of the Inferno Rising series and so I totally recommend starting both series (if you haven’t already) and catch up. So totally worth it! 🖤

Thanks to Entangled Amara and NetGalley, too,
For my copy of this book for which this is my honest review.

The world building in this story is brill,
Creating a paranormal romance that will thrill.
Dragon shifters usually belong to a king ruled clan
But some have gone rogue with a different plan.

Corruption and maltreatment is rife it seems
As Hadyn Reece knows, reliving it in her dreams.
Her fated mate and her parents were killed
So his shifter parents raised her, their concerns they instilled.

When their family hideout Alliance dragons breach
His parents protect her, keep her out of reach.
They’re taken by the dragons to a lair
And Hadyn has the skills to follow them there.

Rune Abandon is the shifter that she needs so
Up to his mountain hideout she has to go.
Can she convince him to help her in her quest
Or will she need to work alone, just do her best?

With shifters, loyalties, mates and lies
This story is enthralling, filled with many a surprise.
There are battles to be fought, a war to be won
But there’s also romance before the story is done.

I thoroughly enjoyed this adventurous book
If you like paranormal adventures, please give it a look.
It is well written, engaging and intense,
A glorious addition to this series of romantic suspense.

The author has created a fantastical, vibrant, and original world in this series and filled it with characters you'll fall in love with. I laughed out loud, and I cried like a baby while reading this book.

It's got it all--characters you'll love, action and adventure, plenty of heat, and a love story that will leave you sighing.

If you love paranormal romance, especially dragons, this book is for you. If you haven't already read the Fire's Edge series, what are you waiting for?

Rune and Hadyn

I am so in love with this series it is not even funny. Each book is better than the other.
I fell in love with Rune ever since his first appearance in book 1. I was intrigued by his character and with each of his appearance I was more and more hooked. I was expecting a lot from his story and boy did it deliver.

Rune has come in the US centuries ago with Finn and the others, to work as a Huracan Enforcer. But decades ago he turned rogue, leaving his team behind and losing his mark. He spent his time tracking unturned mates and keeping them in a secret place so they wouldn't be taken away by the Alliance. He became a traitor with a target on his back. Now that the war between the clans is growing bigger, his old team understands that he actually acts for the good of the mates.
In the last book, his secret place has been destroyed in a battle against the Alaz enforcers, and the Huracans killed them all, unbeknownst from the Alliance, they all have turned rogue. Rune is there to inspect the damages when he founds Hadyn, a dragon mate seeking his help. She was adopted by rogue dragons as a child when their son died, who should have been her mate. Now her adopted parents have been made prisonner by the Alaz team and she needs help to rescue them.
Rune accepts to help her but he will need all the help he can get, especially from his old team, but the Alliance is setting them up and the war is still on.

I loved loved loved Rune and Hadyn. Hadyn was such a strong female lead. She was adopted by dragons when she was only 10 years old and so knows all there is to know about their kind. She knows stealth and fighting techniques and was a really good match for grumpy Rune. I loved that even though she could'nt be mated (since she already lost her fated mate) Rune was willing to spend her lifetime by her side. I loved seeing their relationship develop at the story unfolded.
This book was a rollercoaster of emotion too and I say it each time but it bears repeating: the battle scenes are amazing!! This author has made it into an art, I feel like I am watching a movie when I read these scenes, I couldn't put it down once the fight started.

I am dying to have the next settlement now :(

The Traitor is an apt title for Rune's story, the rogue black dragon who has given himself the mission of saving human females from the mating council who have abdicated their proper responsibilities at the cost of human lives. He's been a secondary character in this series from the start but here we get to see things from his point of view and understand why he has become the dragon he is now. And it's only fitting that he gets his own happy ending finally, and with a unique female heroine in Haydn. Her fated mate was a childhood friend who never got the chance to grow up and in a horrible attack she lost him and her parents. Raised by her friend's parents, they've now been kidnapped and held hostage and she believes Rune is the only one who can help save them. When Rune agrees, they set off together to save her adopted parents but they have to deal with the sparking attraction between them - and the challenge of resisting those feelings because falling for someone who isn't your fated mate spells death. Or does it? It's an action packed and fun adventure with plenty of familiar characters from previous stories, tie-ins to the author's parallel dragon shifter series Inferno Rising, and a sexy romance. I highly recommend all the books in the series!

Whoa…The Prologue grabbed me and the story never let me go! It made me sad and angry and ready to fight.

Rune could fight his thoughts as much as he wants, but when he met Hadyn, he met his match. I quickly fell in love with her sassy attitude. She shows no fear, though he thinks she should. He doesn’t need dragon flames to set her body on fire.

Hadyn had tracked down Rune, and it was luck that she found him when she did. Her parents had told her to RUN to Rune., a rogue black dragon with a bounty on his head. He doesn’t know it, but he has friends and they will need them to rescue her parents from the Alliance.

Rune had been an enforcer for the Alliance, chosen to uphold dragon law. BUT, the laws were breaking down and Rune knew he could no longer continue in the same way. Now, with Hadyn, he will have to make his move.

Abigail Owen’s vivid descriptions of the characters and action, the dragons in flight, almost make my stomach lurch with the twisting and plummeting through the air. The romance is obvious, but that’s okay with me. The dialogues and thoughts are humorous, at times, and I love when danger and humor collide. Makes for some fascinating characters, with well developed personalities. Half the time I am gritting my teeth, the other half I am smiling at their antics.

Cracking up at dialogue like:

“…you’re awful cute when you get all alpha-hole-y.”

“Well, hello there Grumpalumapagus….”

Beware, the sex is fiery hot!

It’s always fun to see how Abigail Owen will take a familiar storyline and add a fresh twist. She gives her characters, at least the spotlighted ones, a happy ever after, but I am still fearing for them. I know it will not be all laughs and fun and games and I know not all of them will survive. That is what I fear the most.

The tears did flow…and flow. The minute I thought they would stop, Abigail Owen put me on pins and needles, showing me no mercy and I LOVE IT! The tears kept flowing and I kept rereading parts…because I have to. More tears…Even though I know, or I think I know how the story will end, she keeps me on my toes and my emotions roiling. This may be my favorite Fire’s Edge book yet.

This is book 5 in the Fire's Edge series and while it could be read as a standalone, I highly recommend reading not only the previous books in this series but also the books in the Inferno Rising series as well as they are interconnected. With that being said, we finally get Rune's story in this one!! Decades ago Rune knew he had to make a stand against the system that was being used to not only match dragon mates but to rule the clans as well. But in the course of not only his choices but in helping others, his hideout is destroyed and he is left on the run with a bounty on his head. But when a woman who intrigues him comes to his mountain, he is intrigued. Hadyn lost the future that she expected long ago. But when her adopted parents are taken, she goes to the man who has chosen to stand up to the alliance and do what is right. Now she just hopes that he will help her get her parents back while still staying alive herself.

I absolutely loved Rune's story! Not only do we get the full back story as to why he went Rogue but we also get his past as well. We find out exactly what makes him tick and realize that he truly IS a good man who made an impossible choice. All to the greater good! I wanted to know exactly what drove him from the first time we read about him, and his story is phenomenal! Hadyn is the perfect choice for him. Her back story is heartbreaking and I truly thought that they wouldn't be able to have a true HEA, but I am so glad that this author proved me wrong in this! I loved seeing how everything ties together not only in this series but in the world altogether. I really don't want to say too much, because I don't want to spoil anything. But I can say, this one has become my top favorite in this series just because the characters are that great! Loved it!

*I received this book as a gift in exchange for my honest opinion.

Oh. My. Holy. Dragons!!!!!!!!!! Should I say it? I'm gonna say it. I've been reading this author's dragon series for years and have fallen further in love with not only the world she has created, but her style of writing. So I'm gonna just coin this now......Abigail Owen is the queen of Dragon Shifters! Ok, I said it. I feel better now.

If you've been following this series, then you know that Rune has been a sore topic. He's an arse, rogue and traitor to not only his king, but his former enforcer team. But guess what? We've come to find out that not everything is what it appears. There are always two, if not more, sides to every story and this one pulled at each and every heart string.

Hadyn isn't your typical human. She's actually a human mate who lost her destined mate before she could be turned. Since she hasn't been turned, she will no longer live the eternal life she was told she had the chance to live. Although her mate died, her mates parents took her in, schooled her on everything dragon shifter related and taught her how to live in their world. Except now they have been captured. So she turns to the one person she was told could help...Rune. Finding him won't be the issue, convincing him to help will.

SOOOOO many things happen in this book that there is NO WAY I can continue filling you in without ruining it. The only thing that I can say without doubt it that this is absolutely the best one yet. I literally CRIED!!!!!!!! Cried!!!!! I laughed and then cried again. This is so beautifully written that I honestly think that I'll be reading it again.....and again....and again!

(ARC provided by NetGalley; opinions are my own.)

Another fantastic book filled with plenty of action and romance. It seemed appropriate that this series ends with Rune's story. He has been labeled a traitor for standing up to the evil factions in the Alliance and has been a one man show since being forced to leave his team, fighting for what he believes in. Hayden was to be a dragon mate but always believed her true mate died when she was a child and she was then raised by dragon parents. It was actually refreshing for a mate to have full understanding of the dragon world, and her abilities to climb and fight that were taught to her by her dragon parents made her one tough cookie. I admired how when she decided something needed to be done, she went and did it. She didn't wait around for someone to save her and she knew she needed help to save her parents and decided to climb Rune's mountain to find him. From there they are on a non-stop adventure while fighting their attraction for each other. The final battle was thrilling and unpredictable, as was most of the book. I had trouble putting it down once starting.

I enjoyed the interactions with Rune's team and was glad that he finally gets some vindication and acceptance in this book. The traitor becomes a hero through his honor and his deeds and eventually he gets his HEA with his mate.

I loved it. I've been patiently waiting for Rune to final meet his fated mate. It was worth the wait. But, Abigail Owen you know what you did, and I kinda hate you a little right now for doing it. I love the book and how everything turned out, except for that. (I'm giving you the evil eye right now).

Wow, what a series end. It was the end I think, well definitely a HFN.

This is Runes story and he's got his work cut out with Haydn a strong woman, to be honest they're both very independant so it made it a fun read.

Back to Rune, he's good at dirty talking and not too bad at enacting it. I'm sure there was more sex in this book than the others, or it was just hotter - no pun intended!

If your looking for an exciting dragon read this is one to add to your TBR, it has everything action, drama, passion, and heartache.

I'll miss these dragons, I've really enjoyed this series.

First, I will start off by saying if you haven't read the previous books, you need to in order to fully enjoy this series. I have been following Abigail Owens since the first book in Fire’s Edge, and there is a lot of worldbuilding done early on that is important to understand before reading this book. It is what a lot of us long-time readers have been waiting for, because we've always known that the hero would be getting his story at some point. We weren't sure how, we weren't sure when, but somehow Abigail Owen would write him a romance to trump all those before him. And we weren't wrong. This book is my favorite in the series, for both the unique backstory of the heroine and the slow (seriously, so slow) burn between her and the hero. I was in agony as we waited for them to finally come together, which is the best sort of pain while reading. Once the burn is satisfied, there is no better feeling on Earth.

A dragon's mate with a dead mate straddles the human and dragon world with some discomfort. Hadyn Reece was raised by dragon parents after her own parents were killed, alongside her intended mate, at the young age of ten years old. Having shown her dragon sign much younger than normal, she has had a decade to hone her skills and understand her place in the world. With her mate dead, she knew she'd never get another mate, and that's why she is so surprised when she meets Rune Abbadon and feels a strong connection unlike any she has ever felt before. Rune is shocked when he sees a human scaling his mountain, even more so when she looks straight into his hidden camera and calls his name. Curious and full of distrust, he greets her, and when her story checks out, they find themselves on the run from his enemies while simultaneously heading towards even more danger. Hadyn's adopted parents have been kidnapped, and Rune is the one they told Hadyn to come to for help. In exile as a rogue, Rune has few allies, but it's not in his nature to turn away a dragon's mate in need. Thus begins a journey many years in the making, with the ending uncertain and the path full of hidden surprises.

Beyond an obvious fated mates trope at work here, we also have several other elements to this story that really whet my appetite for more. One, Rune is a seemingly morally grey character for most of this series, so to suddenly see him as a man worthy of redemption is catnip to me. He is also a big old Grump next to Hadyn's Sunshine, which is also something I love to read. Hadyn was bubbly and outspoken, while Rune was sullen and of few words, which made their interactions all the more hilarious. She kept trying to get under his skin, and when it worked, he was so shocked, making me laugh every time. At one point she got him to smile, and it was just so adorable to see him start to come out from behind this wall he had built for himself. He was so used to being rejected and thought of as the enemy, and when no one else had believed him about the mates being mated against their will, he expected Hadyn to do the same. Instead, this woman who hadn't known him for very long, saw the good in him. It was heartwarming to see Rune finally get the support he had deserved for so long. Hadyn was good for him, in ways he had never thought possible.

Abigail Owen continues to impress me with her writing, and although the previous book in this series wasn't one I enjoyed, I feel that this book makes up for it in spades. So many characters to love, and I am so looking forward to seeing what she writes next.

Yes!!! Finally another book in the Fire's Edge series. I really love the Huracáns. Those guys are so hot and fun loving. I mean really, who doesn't love a sexy fireman!? Well in this book we finally get the story behind the rogue enforcer, Rune. And let me tell you it is a master piece.

Hadyn is on a mission to save her adoptive parents. A mission that is very dangerous for such a pixie like women. But never the less she is on that mission, currently climbing a mountain in the Andes, alone. What is she looking for? Or shall we say who?

Rune is back in the abandoned mountain base. The base was brought down by another casualty of the ongoing war. What he doesn't expect to find is a tiny woman staring into one of the security cameras calling his name. And so begins the interesting story so intense, everything shifts.

This book takes off like a race horse off the starting line. It is intense and grabs your attention immediately. This book is an action packed adventure that has loads of danger and some twists that will have you wondering what is really happening to the dragon shifters.

Hadyn and Rune embark on a dangerous mission together and if the adrenaline they experience doesn't bring them together, then the chemistry will. Because they have loads of it. These two characters were meant to be. They are perfect for each other, with their attitudes and snarky behavior. They are both very strong and independent characters with lots of hidden undertones.

Overall this book is an excellent continuation into the beautiful dragon shifter world that Ms Owen has created. The story is developing at an increasing rate and with all the spin off books we are learning more and more that just because something has always been, doesn't mean that is the way it should be.

Things are definitely happening and death is rising for out shifter friends. It is a battle to the death in some cases. Which brings me to the next point....bring tissues because not only will this book make you laugh and yell out when someone punches someone, it will make you cry. Not just shed a single tear or couple of tears and your done cry. No it will make you wail! Cry so hard that you will have snot running out your nose and can't catch your breath cry! This book will tear your heart to pieces. Because not all characters have a happy ending.

I am so in love with this series. And this book just topped favorite! I love Rune's strong and overbearing side. I also love his tough and dangerous side. The side that screams leader. He is definitely deserving of loads of love and respect. I can't wait to see how the dragon world shift affects the new future.

Finally!
I’ve waited (sort of) patiently for Rune Abbadon’s book for a while now, and it was well worth the wait.

We’ve known about Rune since the first book, in fact he’s been mentioned (and possibly appeared) in the spin off series (Inferno Rising Series)
He’s a rogue dragon that defies the alliance, and he’s been a thorn in the The High King’s side for some time!

But in this book we find out more about the man/dragon. We already know he’s a snarly, lone Wolf! An enigma.
But he was once part of the infamous Huracáns team.
So what happens for him to go rogue?
We know he’s taking mates that are destined to other dragons! Why? It’s all to do with a theory he worked out.
But no one really believed him, so going rogue was his only option!

Hadyn is such a complex character. Definitely human, brought up by dragons after her parents and their son died. Teaching her all there was to know about dragon kind.
She’s a human meant to be a mate for a dragon.
And after losing her adoptive parents to a rogue seeking team, she’s now looking for help. Her dragon father told her of a dragon that could help her.
But when she finds him, he’s not that helpful! In fact he doesn’t trust her at all!!

His dragon is very interested in the little human (Hadyn) but Rune doesn’t let anyone get too close.
And so an uneasy truce/alliance is formed.

Spending time with Hadyn is very distracting for Rune, he’s usually not interested in females. But this one is crawling under his skin with her constant questions, attitude and determination. Maybe he ought to suggest a no strings affair whilst he helps her?!

I love these stories. It’s easily read on its own, but read in order just gives the book more depth.
We see how and why Rune is so closed off.
There is also a lot of action (running from rogue hunting squads)
The attraction between these two is just hot. But he knows she can never really be his. She belonged to someone else, and a fated mate only gets one chance, so trying to mate with Hadyn could cause her death!

We catch up with previous couples, we also get more info on what’s happening with the Alliance. And when a bounty is placed on Rune’s head it places everyone he cares about in danger!

There is so much going on, death of a beloved couple. Fights for freedom and rescue missions. It doesn’t let up!!

I’m recommending this book, but I’m also asking that you read the others as well. You won’t be sorry. The pace, the passion and the story is just one you’ll want to read again and again.

So many stars. You guys…you guys….you guys….my Rune’s book is finally here, (jumps up and down) and he did not disappoint. I have been patiently (shakes head) waiting for this book f-o-r-e-v-e-r, seriously so long. From the first page to the last page this was non-stop, the storyline was fantastic. Rune Abbadon will you be my mate? Actually, no need to ask, I’m just going to stake my claim, he’ll respect it more😉. And here’s why I love me some Rune:
1. I love that he steps up and always does the right thing.
2. I love that he literally doesn’t hold anything back
3. I love that he doesn’t apologize for who he is…even when it goes against everybody else
4. I love that he is protective of those that can’t protect themselves
5. And lastly, I don’t know if he can cook…but I am willing to overlook that because of how passionate he is.

Yup this one is mine, there are plenty of other unmated dragons to go around, this one is taken. No sandwhich here, because I ain’t sharing. #MyRune. I did really love Haydn for him too, instant chemistry with these two, and she is a little firecracker, his words, and very true. It was refreshing seeing the always controlled Rune lose control over the little firecracker pixie. And he always calls her love, Rune Abbadon calls someone love…awweeeee, this guy. She comes looking for him on his mountain, and yes she is a human that physically climbs the mountain to find him. Hence the respect he and his dragon has for their little firecracker. Hadyn had been raised by dragons, so she isn’t fazed a bit by Rune or his dragon, doesn’t hesitate or anything. Her dragon parents trust him, so she does too. And when they get themselves in a few situations, she doesn’t hesitate to help too, regardless of the consequences, she was actually kind of a badass too, without wings, she adjusted accordingly. Her dragon parents trained her well.

I love getting lost in this world. This storyline was fantastic, so much happens from cover to cover. Rune and Hadyn are fantastic. So much heat between these two, insatiable, and of course my Rune is a dirty talker…I should probably add that as number 6 *winks*. Cab wild ride shenanigans. The whole Huracan team are fantastic. We get to read about all of them in this book, and I couldn’t get enough. This series is fantastic…seriously, I can’t say enough about it, or get enough of it, or Abigail Owen’s writing. Such a huge fan. This book had all the emotions too, I even sobbed for a hot second. I lost a lot of sleep reading this book #WorthIt. Much deserved epilogue and hea.

OK, so starting with the 5th book in a series isn't exactly ideal, but honestly it wasn't too big of a problem here, since for the first part of the book Rune and Hayden are mostly on their own--since he's the titular "traitor" and all--and once they're not, Hayden gets the intros that new-to-the-series readers will also need, which is convenient ;)

Though I'm 100% going to go back and read the first 4, because DRAGON SHIFTERS.

(And since I'm me, I've also read and loved The Blood King , book 2 in her related series Inferno Rising and so I'm gonna need to read all the books in both, hopefully before the last one comes out? Brimstone, Inc. is also in the same universe, and--wait for it--I've read just one of those too. Obviously I need to go on a binge and read all of Abigail Owen's books ASAP)

So yes, when it comes to the politics of the dragon wars, starting in the middle is less than ideal. But whether you know all the details of the books that came before or not, you're still in for one heck of a ride when you pick up one of these books. I loved Haydn and Rune, both as characters and (eventually) as a couple, because OMG they were fabulous together once they let themselves be together.

Though the scene a bit before that with the assist from a succubus was pretty good too. And by good I mean H.O.T. ;)

The secondary characters, many of whom have had their own books, were fabulous too, and I loved the dynamic that they all had with each other, both those already established and the ones that developed during the course of the book. Honestly, I was so invested in these characters that I cried. Twice! I so need to read the rest of these books ASAP!

Rating: 4 stars / A-

I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

I look for a brooding, difficult hero with the ability to love deeply and a heroine with enough sass to take on said hero. Owen give us both. I loved Rune and Hayden both equally. Rune, the sexy, outcast. Reviled by all for leaving the clan and stealing potential human mates. Sigh. Hayden, the strong woman not afraid to scout out intel at the enemy stronghold where her adoptive parents are captive or scale a mountain to find one of the scariest dragons in the world. She's not afraid to dish out attitude to said dragon either. Every time she does in hearing range of other dragons, gasps are heard as Rune's peers are shocked that anyone would speak to him in such a way. Especially a puny human. Rune never once feels the need to put Hayden in her place. No, he actually enjoys her mouth. In more ways than one 😁.

Rune's lost his wards. His unmated females are in capable hands. But he's not looking for a new adventure. Because he respects fellow rogues, Qara and Chaghan, and maybe in part because he's so intrigued by Hayden, Rune reluctantly agrees to go with Hayden to attempt to rescue her parents. Hayden and he barely escape his mountain and the warring faction is hot on their tales for the rest of the book. If his followers knew what we do, this war would be over but instead the imposter king still has plenty of forces to give our good guys a huge fight. Luckily, Rune is welcomed back into the folds of the friends who abandoned him long ago because they didn't understand his mission. As their ranks grow, they find a few hard won victories against the repressive, violent regime. Along the way, these two inevitable soul mates, grow closer and closer. Conventional wisdom says an unturned mate who's lost her partner cannot bond with a new mate. The long life of dragons makes it an exercise in near futility to take a human lover who can't be a true mate. Why subject yourself to a limited existence together? But when it's true love, what's a dragon to do? Reader of the series know too that strange things are afloat in the dragon world that defy all known rules and weirder things have happened than these two become real mates and Hayden being turned.

I love Owen's world. Dragons, come on, what's not to love? She's giving us great personalities, tons of intense battle and intrigue and heartwarming love stories. This series remains a favorite and I look forward to each new book. I can't wait for the next.

The Traitor, by Abigail Owen, is a full, rich read. It's fifth in a series, but it was my first, and it read perfectly fine as a standalone. It's clear which characters were protagonists in previous books though, and it made me want to track the preceding four books down for sure.

There are certain things one expects from the shifter trope (mates, mating rituals, etc.), But I found this novel felt a little more complete than most. With regard to this story's take on dragon history and clans, I will admit to feeling a little lost here and there, but it was never enough to detract from my enjoyment of the story.

Hayden has almost always known she's an unmated dragon, though she thought her chance at becoming a dragon would never be realized as her fated mate was killed when she was just 10. After her adopted parents--her deceased mate's--were captured, she seeks out rogue dragon Rune for help. Sparks fly (haha, see what I did there?) as they start their rescue mission.

I like that their attraction and love for each other eventually is out in the open and that the true conflict comes in the form of whether they'll rescue her parents and then be able to be together. It's delicious whenever a gruff and growly male shifter becomes all moony over his woman, and Rune does not disappoint. For her part, Hayden is supremely confident and powerful, and I love that her sharp sense of humor and need to contribute doesn't blind her to her weaknesses as a human. She knows exactly what she can and can't do, and she accepts it with remarkable grace.

If you like shifter stories, you'll definitely enjoy this one. Reading the previous four novels in this series is not necessary, but I do suspect that it might help you get a sense of what's what in this particular dragon universe.

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. Thanks!

I've loved this series since I read the first, The Boss and have been reading each one as it has come out since. Sadly, The Traitor is the last in this series, although there is still the final book to go in the related Inferno Rising series. As much as I loved this book, and I really did, I'm sad that we've come to the end.
This final installment deals with Rogue Dragon Rune Abaddon, he's been in all of the previous books in one role or another, starting out as a character that wasn't trusted due to him going rogue, leading on to the others realizing that what he stood for and had done was actually the right thing to do.
He finally meets his match in Hadyn Reece, a human woman destined to be a dragon mate, until that destiny was ripped away from her. She has spent most of her life since she was a child being raised by dragons, so understands far more about them than most humans. She's brave, strong, and doesn't take any overbearing male dragon attitude, exactly what Rune needs.
I've liked Rune as a character from the beginning and it was great to see him finally get the mate that he needs. He and Hadyn are perfect together.
I did have a couple of little questions, but they weren't anything major. There's also a link to one of the connected series; Brimstone Inc, which I don't remember being mentioned before, but perhaps I just missed it, I've read all of the books.
As I said, I'm really sad to be leaving all of this behind. There are still some characters that I would love to see get their story. I can always hope that we might get that someday? I think that the major story arch that has unfolded across this series and the Inferno Rising books are drawing to a close.
I've really enjoyed these books, in case you can't tell. I can't wait to see what Abigale Owen has for us next.
I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Hadyn Reece has had a rough life and being raised as a human in the world of dragons adds to that layer. Fortunately she's been kept hidden from the prying eyes of the Alliance, safe from being snatched into their fated mate program. Except, her adopted parents are rogues, always on the run, seeking hiding places, and constantly looking over their shoulders. Then, they are found out, targeted, and taken, but only after securely hiding Hadyn and removing all traces of her existence.

Rune Abaddon is Hadyn's father's go-to in case he and her mother ever get captured. Reece is expected to follow the contingency plans they've had in place since taking in their deceased son's fated mate. Dragonless, Hadyn knows in order to save them, she must go to the one place she hopes to find Rune. And beg him for his help.

Hadyn and Rune are spectacular. I loved both of them as soon as I met them. They are both strong, take charge characters. Separately they were fantastic, together they are amazing. I love their dynamics, chemistry, and underlying issues that prevented their union from happening too fast. The slow-burn nature of their romance was perfectly paced and wonderful to experience as a reader.

This book is full of action, suspense, and romance. There are several storylines woven throughout the book and the author did a wonderful job threading them around Hadyn and Rune. I love the author's writing style - this isn't the first novel by Abigail Own I've read and she has become a top favorite.

The Traitor is a wicked roller coaster ride that never lets up and does not disappoint. It steals your heart before you can blink, and then it proceeds to stretch it to its breaking point. Just when you can take anymore, this story seeps into your very soul and shows you that there is more to you then you thought possible. The struggles we face and the mountains we have to climb are put in our path to make us into the people we are meant to be. They shape and mold us into a better person even we can't see it. The difference we make in this world by just breathing is tremendous. We should never take that for granted and always remember that we never know what someone else is struggling with. So, let always extend grace and compassion no matter how we feel.

Rune has lived a long time on the run. He has a mission that is known only be a few while everyone else despises him. They don't know what his life is like. Their opinion is only based on the word of others, but even still they take it for the final truth when they should seek answers for themselves. Rune doesn't care what others think of him. His only concern is his mission at the cost of everything else. Hayden needs help, and she is sent to find Rune. She is convinced he is the only one who can help her. What she is asking for would take a miracle, and Rune is know to have pulled off one or two of those. Their tenuous alliance and fragile trust is tested time and again until they find there is more to the other then meets the eye. Can Rune help Hayden to pull off a dangerous mission, or will Hayden be forced to go it alone and rip apart what the Fates have set in motion?

Hayden is unlike any woman Rune has ever met, and yet he can't walk away or ignore her like every other female in his life. She is the sun in his universe, and he is inexplicably pulled to her no matter what. Run fascinates Hayden to no end. There is so much more this man of mystery then anyone knows, and she is determined to dig it all up and appreciate each piece. She knows a good man when she meets one, and Rune is a very good man despite himself. I love how Hayden destroys Runes defenses without him even knowing it. She doesn't have to try anything except to be herself. Seeing him tripping over himself because of her is such a sweet and delightful thing to behold from such a silent and rough man.

Abigail Owen has truly outdone herself with Rune's story. I knew it would be good, but this truly blew my mind and melted my heart. These exceptional characters are so very different, and yet they couldn't fit the other more perfectly. This story was poetry in motion. The words and feelings leapt off the pages and burrowed into my heart. I didn't want to let go, and I savored every second. This series keeps getting better and better!

The Traitor is book six in the Fire’s Edge series. I haven’t read any of the previous books, so I can honestly say this one is written as a standalone title. There were no holes in the plot where I was lost due to not reading any of the other books, nor did any part feel like an information dump, either. I’ve only read one other book by this author and really enjoyed it, so I thought I’d give this new release a try.

Once upon a time, I said I wasn’t a huge fan of paranormal romance/suspense books, save for the Twilight series. But authors like Abigail Owen have quickly changed my mind, and I seem to be on a paranormal romance kick for the moment. I ultimately read it in one day (and way too late into the night so that I didn’t have to put it down!). It’s a dragon shifter romance full of heart-pounding action, edge-of-your-seat suspense, heartwrenching emotion, and intense chemistry between the hero and heroine. It sucked me in from page one, with action and emotion hitting me from all sides. Tears were shed, and curse words wanted to fly out of my mouth (but did not because my sleeping hubs would have been so mad!) several times throughout the story, as it’s truly an emotional rollercoaster ride. I enjoyed it so much that I’m off to read the series’ previous books!

NICUnurse’s Rating: I give The Traitor by Abigail Owen 4 out of 5 stars!

A great end to an awesome series. Full of action, suspense, danger, excitement, unexpected twists and turns, and including an intense storyline that will hold your attention and keep you flipping the pages. Finally, we get Rune’s full story and it definitely proves that not everything is always as it seems. There are layers upon layers and I enjoyed seeing him finally be able to get some vindication and acceptance and find his HEA. Rune and Hayden were awesome characters who balanced and challenged each other along the way. I loved that Hayden, being raised in the dragon world to be a mate, knew how to take care of herself and do things on her own. She was right there in the middle of it all, doing what needed to be done regardless of the consequences. I also enjoyed seeing other couples and catching up with them throughout the story. It’s sad to see this series comes to and end but each book was a fantastic adventure in the dragon world. I can’t wait to see what’s in store next.
