Volume 9
Chapters 49-54.5
I really appreciated that this volume circled back to the jerk from Chapter 43—Akabane. He still irritates me. The way he tried to dump the responsibility of apologizing onto Yousuke was beyond cowardly. He’s clearly socially awkward, but it’s hard to feel bad for him when he continually avoids accountability. If he just said what he needed to say when it mattered, things wouldn’t spiral like they do. He’s his own worst enemy. Though I'm glad Yosuke said he's going to make it hard for Akabane to ask Tabata for forgiveness cause he knows she will forgive him. I love the "chaotic loving behind the scenes" boyfriend vibes lol.
On a brighter note, the secondary and third ships are doing great. Sumire is finally being honest with herself and with Gotanda. She’s actually taking steps toward genuine self-growth, and I respect that. The way she and Gotanda are establishing slow, subtle boundaries within their relationship—whatever it is right now—is honestly really refreshing. They don’t need a label yet, but you can tell there’s mutual care and understanding growing between them.
Sumire and Shinbashi also had some fun and perceptive moments together. Even if they don’t develop romantically, I’d be happy to see them continue building a strong friendship. That kind of dynamic adds a lot to the cast.
Speaking of Shinbashi—he’s becoming one of the most well-written characters in the series. Watching him evolve from a one-note comic relief guy into someone who’s genuinely trying to step up for his friends has been so satisfying. He’s slowly gaining a spine, making decisions that aren't selfish, and it’s awesome seeing that development unfold. He’s no longer just there to push the plot—he’s becoming a solid, supportive person in his own right.
I really liked this volume and can't wait to see how the school trip turns out and how Akabane makes or breaks our lead's resolve/relationship internally/externally.
