Throughout the book Oberbrunner uses the phrases "getting-hacked" and "boon" which can simply be replaced by "getting-distracted" and "goal".
The first 2 thirds of this book take a significant amount of "influence" from Nir Eyal's "Indistractable" with the last third of the book being a regurgitation of Steven Kotler and Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's work.
I still rated this 3 stars because if you have read most of Kotler's work and other popular titles in this niche then you can reframe your experience with Unhackable as a commentary on already well-established ideas. If you're able to do this then you'll enjoy the book, if not, stick with Kotler.
Unhackable was entirely responsible for my retiring my 14-year non-profit fundraising career and opening a small business consulting company. Kary Oberbrunner offers practical tips that fight limiting mindsets I didn’t even know I had. Books can often be inspiring. Unhackable was not just inspiring, it was a strategic, play-by-play workbook that carried me out of one career into my calling.
I’ve received advice before; however, the way Unhackable was written offered the ability to unlock potential in me that I had never tried to pursue before.
Kary weaves in quotes from various movies, literature, and his life experience that pierced through my preconceived notions and persuaded me to forward in what was already within me.
I am shocked at how significant every chapter in Unhackable was. I was not expecting to be impressed, and somehow I was magically motivated by each small chapter.
I can not thank Kary enough. Thank you for chasing your boon and offering us encouragement and practical steps along the way.
Highly recommend this book to anyone who isn’t even aware of their potential; you’ll discover more than you imagined.
I love this book for many reasons. Firstly because it covers many areas and also because it gives very concrete advice. Focus is the key to make anything happens. As Kary Oberbrunner explains it, the problem is everyone wants your focus and attention (people, social media feeds, advertisement...). When you get distracted, you lose your focus and if you lose your focus, you get nothing done and you become a product. This book explains how to reclaim your inner power and your focus. Excellent book.
Good ideas, though heavily referential to other, more groundbreaking, works by others. The vocabulary of “boon” was a bit distracting, as were the frequent references to film and YouTube clips (is this a test, Kary? Are you trying to hack me? 😆)
Im teetering between 3-4 stars, giving 4 because I do genuinely appreciate the inspiration and tips for getting focused and finding your purpose. I especially liked the Do-Delegate-Dump portion.
Although this book might be helpful for those starting from absolute zero, the rest may find it redundant. It treats you like a child and explains everything by bringing up the author's other work and promoting his program. Again, a good choice if you need to be babied but for everyone else, stay away.
A little contrived at times as if to fill up a certain number of chapters or pages. Overall, there are great nuggets. Best topics revolve around the central theme of how to manage things that “hack” you. Otherwise, there’s a lot of goal setting discussion.
A great thesis with outstanding support in a easily followed recipe for success. So many lessons and insightful observations ate packed in this book. Stop being hacked and own your RAM!
