Detective Erin O’Reilly’s world is in chaos. After a deadly ambush leaves her boyfriend fighting for his life, she finds herself distrusted by gangsters and fellow police officers alike. She’s walking a fine line between cops and criminals, making her way into a dangerous undercover assignment. But no sooner has she started than a mobster is murdered. All the evidence points to one of Erin’s few allies as the killer. Is he innocent? And if he is, can she prove it?
The personal stakes have never been higher for Erin. With her K-9 partner Rolf the only one she can truly count on, she must find a path through a maze of half-truths and lies. In the underworld, perception is more important than reality in a lethal game where the prize is survival. Can Erin’s wits and Rolf’s instincts find the truth, or will they lose themselves in the labyrinth?
Steven Henry is the USA Today bestselling author of the Erin O’Reilly mysteries and the Clarion Chronicles.
Steven learned how to read almost before he learned how to walk. Ever since he began reading stories, he wanted to put his own on the page. He lives a very quiet and ordinary life in Minnesota with his wife and dog.
Carlyle's in the hospital, after taking a bullet to the gut meant for Erin. She loves him, he loves her and it's time to speak to her father about the relationship. Of course Sean's not happy but he sort of understands. Erin and her undercover handler are now talking, discussing tactics on how to spy on Evan. And Erin and Cars feel they need to bring Corky into the plan to destroy the Irish mob. In the mean time, Ian is framed for a murder and Vic and Erin fight to prove he's innocent. This story was very tense as Erin is dancing a fine line between being a dirty cop and a good cop. I read it with my shoulders around my ears, my sign that I'm doing something tense. These books are great!
High Stakes a great addition to the series. Everything explodes for Erin as her actions and relationships come to life. Erin is forced to come out to her dad, Vic, Webb, Holiday, and the Bloodhound. We get introduced to Phil who I happen to like as a character so far while Erin and Vic spend almost the entire book fighting. Erin's choice to keep her relationship secret costs her a lot of trust with Vic and Webb which I hope eventually gets repaired. Webb also really came into himself as a leader this book and I did like seeing that.

Sorry, can't say much more without spoiling it. Go Erin! Go Rolf! I am rooting for the many characters that I like in this series as I scramble to the next novel!
This is a a thorough look at an undercover cop's life and how she got caught up in such a situation. I really enjoyed it and look forward to the next story coming out in a couple of months.
Tension and a the quick pace ramps up as Erin juggles the head of the O’Malley gang, his security chief, a mob murder and the police department. I might be developing an ulcer simply by reading about the pressure on Erin.
High Stakes is book #11 in the Erin O'Reilly K-9 Mystery series by Steven Henry. This is another one of my favorite series, as well as one of my top favorite authors. For those of you who enjoy a great K-9 mystery series, I also recommend Sara Driscoll's FBI K-9 series, Jen Blood's Flint K-9 Search and Rescue series, Margaret Mizushima's Timber Creek K-9 mystery series, and several years worth of Harlequin Love Inspired Suspense series' starting with their Texas K9 unit series in 2013 through the current series, Alaska K9 Unit, that began on April 1, 2021.
I love all the characters in Steven Henry's Erin O'Reilly K-9 series, whether major or minor, beginning with Erin and her K-9 Rolf, to Morton Carlyle, Corky Corcoran, Erin's entire biological family, and even the bad guys. Of course, I "don't" love the killers and other really bad guys, but I do love the way the author brings them to life and then kills some of them off. I love the relationship between Erin and her dad, Erin and Rolf, and Erin and Carlyle. My favorite character, besides Erin, Carlyle, Rolf, and Erin's entire biological family, is James "Corky" Corcoran: flirty, good-looking, sexy, and the perfect kind of character that you would find in a remake of John Wayne's "The Quiet Man"; although, not the part played by John Wayne. Corky would be more "the best friend in the pub" type of character.
In this episode, Erin goes deep undercover to save Carlyle who is recovering from his gunshot wound in the gut. She must infiltrate The O'Malley syndicate. Only a few people know about this undercover copy role: Keene (a sleezy slime-ball of a guy from Internal Affairs), Phil (her liaison with the police department), Erin, Carlyle, and Corky, and, of course, Rolf (but he'd never say a word to anyone else). I love the fact that Erin acts like a toughie when she is around the O'Malley crowd, refusing to turn her gun over to them, and informing one guy that if he puts his hands on her, she'll shoot off a protruding body part. I can hardly wait for the next book.
This book received a big fat 5 star rating from me.
