Holly lives in a little white cottage by the sea. She studied media at university which led to a very glitzy career as a hotel receptionist followed by a even more glamorous two years working in a bank. The moment that one of her colleagues received the much coveted carriage clock for fifteen years’ service was the moment when she knew she had to escape. She quit her job and returned to university to train to be a teacher. Three years later, she emerged wide eyed and terrified that she now had responsibility for the development of thirty young minds. She taught for four years and then escaped the classroom to teach history workshops, dressing up as a Viking one day and an Egyptian High Priestess the next. But the long journeys around the UK and many hours sat on the M25 gave her a lot of time to plan out her stories and she now writes full time, doing what she loves.
Holly has been writing for 8 years. She was shortlisted for the New Talent Award at the Festival of Romance. Her short story won the Sunlounger competition and was published in the Sunlounger anthology. She won the Carina Valentine’s competition at the Festival of Romance with her novel The Guestbook. She was shortlisted for Best Romantic Read, Best eBook and Innovation in Romantic Fiction at the Festival of Romance. She is the bestselling author of 26 books selling over a million books worldwide. Holly's books have been translated into French, German, Italian, Dutch, Bulgarian, Estonian, Turkish and Russian.
Last month I read Christmas Under a Cranberry Sky and complitely fell in love with it. In that book (first in this series), Holly Martin described perfectly a little town called Christmas, filled my heart with happines and woke up my Christmas Spirit. When you finish a book that good, it is unusual thing that you except for it's sequel to be highly enjoyable as well.
Unfortunately, what I expected did not happen. Christmas Under a Starlit Sky was a solid sequel, but nothing more then that. It was somewhat entertaining book with the happiest end and a lot of drama. And that is what ruined the whole reading experience for me: DRAMA, DRAMA, DRAMA.
I couldn't even enjoy the Chrismas setting that Martin described in a really good way (but sensibly weaker then she did it in book 1), because the characters were all into their problems, always fighting or avoiding each other. And keeping secrets.
The main character Neve did one of those things I find manipulative and I pretty much HATE that kind of move (this happens pretty early in the book so I don't feel like it's a spoiler): she lied about her pregnancy to her future baby's father, telling him he's not a father to "protect" him because, of course, she's the one who knows what is the best for him.
And practiacally the whole book was about Neve acting like some character from those Latino-American soup operas where the woman pushes away a guy, cries about him because she wants him back, loves him but acts like lunatic and plays the "victim" who believes she's a hero by "sacrificing" her own happiness... Big eye roll....
Ivy's story was so much better and more enjoyable. Honestly, when I read parts about Ivy and Adam, it was like taking a breath of fresh air after being in smoke filled room.
However, I have to stress out that those parts weren't perfect, but in comparison with Neve and Oakley's parts, they felt light hearted (and that's how I like for my festive reads to be).
Writing style is very good, fast paced and I expected nothing less from Holly Martin, judging by her other books I read this year. She has the ability to pull you into the story with her words and make you read her books faster then you thought is possible, and because of that I admire her.
The ending was really good. It was the happiest ending there could be and I like how it all wrapped up and not one character from the series wasn't left out.
Note: I got this book for free in an exchange for an honest review. Thank you Bookouture.
When Neve Whitaker ended her relationship with Hollywood star Oakley Rey she really never thought that she would see him again as she felt she didn't belong in his world. But after heading to Juniper Island in Scotland to be with her family and taking a job as the manager of the Stardust Lake hotel Neve finds herself with a secret that she doesn't know whether she should keep or not.
After a couple of months apart and time to think Oakley decides that Neve is his life and as much as he loves his career he needs Neve in his life to be happy so he follows her to the island to try to win her back. Neve doesn't know what to think when Oakley shows up again in her life, she knows she loves him but she doesn't want to be the one to stand between him and his dreams so when her secret comes out she lies to Oakley and tries to push him away and now thinks it would take a holiday miracle to save their relationship.
Christmas Under a Starlit Sky is the second book in the A Town Called Christmas series by Holly Martin. I haven't read the first book in the series myself and while I do think this one can be read as a standalone I also believe that there may have been a tad bit of setting and character building missing from this quaint small town.
This book unfortunately had me very torn the entire time that I was reading it. For starters I love that the focus of the book included more than just the main couple but a couple of other secondary relationships. Oakley and Neve got the most time in the story but there was a second building relationship between Adam and Ivy that also got a lot of time. Along with those two couples there's also a third that gets mentioned here and there so there was plenty to keep a reader's attention in this particular book.
However, for me this one also seemed to be weighted down with a bit too much angst and drama for my taste. The story starts with Oakley and Neve meeting up after a break up where Neve reveals some important information to Oakley but then lies a bit about it too so that of course led to many chapters dealing with the fall out but instead of when the truth comes out it ends we have a bit more drama just to prolong the story. Now, as far as the other couples they were far less dramatic although not without their own problems but a bit faster getting them worked out and that made them much more likable in my opinion.
In the end I decided to give this one 3.5 stars, I loved the fact that the book focuses on much more than just a single couple but more paying attention to the town but it could have used a bit less angst.

Having already read the first book in this series, Christmas Under a Cranberry Sky, I couldn’t wait to return to the fantastic island community she’s created and I wasn’t disappointed. This novel continues on from the first, so I really recommend reading them in the correct order. It was brilliant to catch up with everyone on Juniper Island again - and don’t assume the story is only about Neve and Oakley! On the island this time Cupid has been working overtime, though nothing is ever completely straightforward, there is plenty of angst and turmoil to make things a real emotional rollercoaster ride, on where you’re not quite sure what may happen before everyone can reach that elusive HEA ending.
With an interfering, controlling Mum and a girlfriend who is prepared to let the love of her life go so he can achieve his dreams, Oakley is definitely in for a hard time as misunderstandings, accidents, surprises, lies and the past, together with the ever present, intrusive, paparazzi, all seem to strive to keep him and Neve apart. I daren’t name any of the other couples who get together in this story, that’ would be too many spoilers and I always try to avoid giving any of them away, but suffice it to say there’s plenty of romance in the air in the village of Christmas.
There’s plenty of community spirit, people care about each other and the whole atmosphere is of people working together to achieve a common goal through positive support - if only more of the real world could work like this! For example, there’s one incident where one of the wild horses manages to get stuck and accidentally traps someone with them - and when the lady is missed, the whole community go to search for her and come to the rescue. There’s another where you’ll discover about how one of Neve’s horses is specially trained and how this helps one of the hotel guests - so moving!
This is another magical festive read. It was brilliant to be able to catch up with everyone in this winter wonderland and I have no hesitation in highly recommending both books in this series to anyone who enjoys a emotional, festive, action packed romance.
Thanks to the publishers and NetGalley for gifting me an ARC of this novel.
I confessed in my review of the first book in this series, Christmas Under a Cranberry Sky that I’m a Christmas junkie and I couldn’t wait to revisit this lovely and enchanting town again! I may have even liked this one a bit better than the first though they’re equally charming and romantic, this book just has a bit more drama and secrecy than the first.
This book picks up right where the first one left off, Neve is shocked by the sudden, unannounced appearance of her ex boyfriend, Oakley who also happens to be a huge Hollywood movie star. Things between them are immediately complicated and muddled up though it’s clear they’re still madly in love with each other. While the first book focused mostly on the love story between Gabe and Piper love is in the air for many of the residents of Juniper Island this time around. Adam, the new assistant manager of the hotel begins a tentative relationship with one of the shop workers Ivy, and we are even shown brief glimpses of Luke (Neve and Gabe’s brother) and Andrea as they fall in love. All of them must sort through various problems and issues as they take a chance on love. And one of my favorites little Wren is back and she’s just as unabashedly honest and hilarious as she was in the first book.
No one writes a Christmas book quite as beautifully as Martin does, she captures the magic of Christmas and she made me feel like a young child again, I was so enraptured by this extraordinary town. I’m going to go ahead and dub her the Queen of the Romantic Christmas novel! Just look at that cover, doesn’t it make you want to crawl right inside? I’m actually trying to talk myself out of decorating my house for Christmas because if I actually do that in October my husband may think I’ve finally gone and lost my mind! Pick this one up for a feel good, funny, warm and cozy read that will make you sigh with happiness and contentment by the end.
I received a copy of this via NetGalley in return for a fair and honest review
This follows immediately on from the first in the series, Christmas Under a Cranberry Sky, as that finished with Oakley arriving who is Neve's ex. A Hollywood superstar no less! She is shocked to see him back on Juniper Island as they split 9 weeks ago - he saw it as a split, he saw it as taking a break! So he's back to win her back again and carry on with their relationship as thought nothing has happened - easier said than done!
her life revolves around the hotel as the manager so she can see no future in a life with a man who lives In America, surrounded by the most glamorous of women. He swears he only has eyes for her and is back to prove that, but she has heard those kinds of lines before from an ex so has major trust issues and isn't going to be won over easily - very difficult when you have such a hot bloke as Oakley in front of you!!
This is a lot sexier than the first book, and there seems to be love dust sprinkled all over Juniper Island as there is love in the air blossoming between some of the other characters too and it is lovely to see other relationships starting in the most unlikely of ways!
Also good to read more about Gabe, Piper and Wren - Wren is so adorable and isn't afraid to ask the questions that others shy away from! The world is so simple in her eyes!!
Another gorgeous story from Holly as she has a way of setting the scene perfectly and introducing the reader to so many different kinds of characters that you feel immediate empathy for as they try and make their way in life and negotiate many obstacles that life often throws in the way!
I loved this enchanting Christmas romance! I was immediately drawn into the book.
The main couple is Oakley, Hollywood superstar, and Neve, manager of the new Hotel on Juniper Island. Apparently it starts where book 1 left off, which is with Oakley arriving to try and patch things up with Neve after being split for a couple of months. Fireworks, dramatics, and a roller coaster of emotions are in store for the reader as we follow these 2 over the holiday. Another couple talked about is Ivy and Adam, both who've been hurt in previous relationships and are hesitant to act on their attraction to each other. Holly Martin is a great writer who makes her characters so genuine, you'll fall in love with all of them and become invested in what happens to them. We get to see a myriad of emotions and feelings including passion, anger & misunderstanding. There is great ambiance, a feeling of community, and Christmas spirit throughout.
I missed the first book in this series, Christmas Under a Cranberry Sky: A Perfect Romance to Curl Up by the Fire with, which makes me sad since I know through this one what happens with Gabe & Piper. It wasn't detrimental at all to the reading experience of this book though! It can totally be read as a stand-alone, like I did. I may go back and read it anyway, with the praise I've seen about it.
Recommended Holiday romance! This exactly what I love to read around the holidays! I look forward to reading more by Holly.

This series is continued in a wonderful way. A quite enjoyable, swoony read perfect for the Christmas season. Mrs. Martin's ability to capture the Christmas atmosphere and incorporate it into her books is one of a kind, and she does it in an interesting way: through a playful style, amazing characters and a picture perfect setting. I am just now discovering Holly Martin's works and I have to say, I am excited to see what else she has in store.
The 2nd, and final, book in the series tied up all the loose ends nicely but I felt like Adam and Ivy and definitely Luke and Audrey could have had their own stories so I've knocked a star off for denying me that! Overall this was a very romantic and uplifting read, full of the magic of Christmas and further proof for me that Holly Martin does tell a good story!
In Holly Martin's Christmas Under a Starlit Sky, we're introduced to the wonderful Neve Whitaker who we originally meet in the first story set on Juniper Island. She's manager of the Stardust Lake Hotel and adores her job. She works alongside her family, overseeing the running of the establishment with huge amounts of passion. This job, too, keeps Neve busy and ensures she doesn't focus too much on her broken heart. Rather than keeping her readers hanging, Martin gets straight into it as the novel opens with the reappearance of Neve's one true love Oakley Rey. Confident and straight-up but with eyes only for Neve, it was impossible for me not to fall beneath his spell, as Neve had once done too. He was made of that delectable concoction of hard and soft that I find addictive in fictional heroes. It was clear from the get-go that Oakley was there for one thing and one thing only. To win his love back. But with huge secrets between them, it's not going to be easy.
Martin's characters are always so enjoyable and entertaining. Created with love and warmth, each of them, the characters secondary to Neve and Oakley's story included, are impossible not to love. From the dialogue that passes between them, to their own inner thoughts and secrets, it's addictive watching their layers unravel as their stories unfold. From the moment Neve sets eyes on Oakley again, it's obvious that she's shaken up. The chemistry between them is blinding, and this is something else that Martin is continuing to excel at with each book. Breath-taking, heart-stopping and toe-tingling romance that has you sighing wistfully because it's just so damn stunning. I adored reading of their relationship as the story progressed, as Martin took me right back to when they first set eyes on each other. Having the author take you back in time in such a way really gives you a history between the characters to cling onto. It provides you with a past to them that makes them all the more believable. Not only are we treated to Neve and Oakley's story though. In Christmas Under a Starlit Sky, Martin intertwines Adam and Ivy's story, and it was utterly adorable. There was so much to take into consideration within this book which gave me a huge amount to sink my teeth into. With small mysteries aplenty and revelations too, Martin certainly ensured that the pages were kept turning with hardly a pause between them.
If Christmas and romance and deliciously popping chemistry is what you're after, then look no further. Christmas Under a Starlit Sky by Holly Martin has it all. The relationships. The boundaries. The issues and problems in need of being resolved. Those moments of pure tenderness that have you swooning repeatedly. It was perfect in every way imaginable and I just couldn't get enough. I already want to be on Juniper Island and stomping through the snow with these characters. They're lovable and memorable and their stories weave their own special place into your heart.
What a wonderful second book in the Town Called Christmas series, it has just the right mix of full on Christmas feeling, lots of drama, many ups and downs, has made me cry and above all has fabulous conclusion too, wrapping up many storylines from both this and the first book.
I had been looking forward to starting Christmas Under a Starlit Sky, pretty much seconds after finishing Christmas Under a Cranberry Sky, as I really didn't want to stop reading about the picturesque Juniper Island, the truly magical and festive setting Holly Martin has created for these books.
If you are looking for a pair of beautiful romances, which don't go particularly smoothly then Christmas Under A Starlit Sky is definitely a book to read. We have Neve's relationship with Oakley to sort out, and Neve has a surprise for him, that may not go too well. There is also Adam who meets one of the villagers and there is a clear spark. but will they be able to get over what Ivy's not telling him.
And even Luke, the oldest of the Whitaker siblings is having his heart turned by a woman, which although we don't see it in any details, there are just hints here and there, so its great to see that he is affected by the magic of The Merry Dancers (Northern Lights) as they appear on Juniper Island.
One of my favourite moments, was Neve's riding lesson with young Poppy. Poppy used to love riding until a tragic accident left her without legs. Neve's secret dream is to teach horse riding to paraplegics and quadriplegics, and has a horse ready just for this sort of thing. It was such a touching moment, and coming on the back of having watched the Paralympics, I have a bit of a fascination with just how inspirational these sorts of things can be. The whole session was dealt with sensitively, and couldn't help but make me smile. In fact its a bit of a shame there wasn't more of this in the book, as I think it could be a great basis for a story itself.
Easily the biggest laughs of the book is the explanation Oakley gives, in answer to 4 year old, Wren's question about baby's origins! I'm not going to give away just how the explanation goes, nor why it came up in conversation, but its a must read section.
Even Christmas day is not without its drama on Juniper Island, and the whole book is just filled with action, many characters and a whole lot of love. I loved my return to this fantabulous setting, and really really hope we haven't seen the last of it.
Thank you so much to Netgalley and Bookouture for this review copy. This was my honest review.
I felt a little frustrated with this book and just begged for it to get to the point I felt there were too many secrets that could have been explained sooner I wasn't an Oakley fan I'm afraid, it certainly won't stop me from reading other books by holly I've enjoyed all the others
I really struggled with how to rate this one. I was wavering between 2 and 3 stars. Normally I absolutely love Holly Martin's romances. They are fun, fluffy, holiday reads...this one didn't have that same feel for me. There was just SO. MUCH. DRAMA. the entire time. This book is the second of Holly Martin's A Town Called Christmas series, and I think before you read this one you should probably read #1, Christmas Under A Cranberry Sky. The story is about another couple/couples but it has a continuing storyline from the first book.
I was a little reluctant to pick up this one because after reading the first one, I thought it kind of seemed like it was going to be a love triangle but it wasn't at all. It actually follows both Neve with Oakley AND Adam with Ivy. I was relieved when I saw that was the case because I really don't care for love triangles. If I had to guess, I would say that Luke isn't getting his own story like I thought he might because we see him and Aubrey together in this one too.
This book had one of those tropes that I absolutely despise... the one where a pregnant woman tells the father of the child that the baby isn't his to "help him" since having one would ruin his career and she doesn't think he wants the baby. That's not really a spoiler since it happens pretty early on. I wanted to quit right there. The drama just got worse from there. It was nonstop, complete with misunderstandings and "selfless" sacrifices. It was just too much. I felt like I didn't get to enjoy the of the fun holiday theme at all, or even enjoy seeing the couples be cutesy or lovey together because they were always fighting or avoiding each other.
This story wasn't for me but, my review seems to be the unpopular opinion on Goodreads, so you still may enjoy it.
** I received an ARC of this title via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own. **
Christmas Under a Starlit Sky is the second book in Holly Martin’s Town Called Christmas series. Like the first book, Christmas Under a Cranberry Sky, it has all the festive charm that Holly is so good at evoking. It would work perfectly as a stand alone novel, however, I would definitely urge you to the read the first book as it is gorgeous.
The story picks up where the last finished with Neve’s ex-partner, Oakley, landing in Juniper Island in his helicopter and this book concentrates on the couple and whether or not they can salvage their relationship. We also get to know the assistant manager of the Stardust Lake Hotel, Adam, and follow him as he settles into life on Juniper Island.
Holly has again created rich, likeable characters (I adored Adam!) and it was lovely to see old favourites from the pervious book too. I found myself rooting for the characters and desperately hoped that everything would work out well for Neve, Oakley and Adam. You really get to know them individually as Holly ensures that she includes their histories which gave me, as the reader, an understanding and empathy for them. This works effectively in totally immersing you into their lives while reading the book.
Christmas Under a Starlit Sky had me fully absorbed from the first page. It is a great read with plenty of dramatic moments along the way as we wait to find out if love can run smoothly. The setting of the utterly gorgeous Juniper Island at the height of Christmas adds to the enjoyment of this book.
Holly Martin is the queen of festive writing in my humble opinion and I loved being back on the remote Scottish island with the Whitaker family and all the other residents. It’s festive, romantic writing at it’s best and Christmas Under a Starlit Sky is the perfect escape from the madness that can be Christmas.
Thank you to Holly Martin, Bookouture and Netgalley for the advance copy.
Oh My, I swear Holly Martin is a fairy and can just wave her wand and sprinkle you with magic; at least that's what it feels like when I read one of her books. The Stardust Lake Hotel is set on Juniper Island which is in a snow covered and beautiful island in Scotland. In the first book we see the hotel opening and the guy behind that is Gabe. In the first book Gabe has his own story to tell and in this second book we focus on his sister Neve who is the Manager for the hotel. Neve was a secondary character but you got a real feel for her in the first book and I really wanted to find out what happened next for her. She had recently split up from her famous actor boyfriend Oakley Rey and is shocked when he arrives on the island one day.
With Neve battling her feelings for Oakley, and Oakley doing his best to show Neve he wants her back it becomes a struggle between her feelings and the secret she is hiding. In addition to Neve we see more of Adam the Assistant Manager who has just come to the island for 3 months to help run the hotel.Adam is an easy character to like and he has his own share of heartbreak from his past. When he meets Ivy a resident of the island things take a turn for him and he is put in a position where he isn't sure what he is doing.
As well as the two main threads we once again get to see glimpses of Gabe and Pip, as well as Luke and Neve's parents. I felt like I already knew them all and this second book wrapped up a lot of things from the first book which I loved. Holly Martin manages to produce slightly magical feeling books, with lashings of romance and all wrapped up in a cosy Snow capped Christmas theme...you couldn't ask for any more! Once again I was transported away for the duration of the book and was sad when it all finished. I cannot wait for Holly's next books and think this and the first book would make an excellent Christmas present for fans of this genre!

This is the second book in the ‘A Town Called Christmas’ series. The book continues directly on from where book one, Christmas Under a Cranberry Sky, ended.
This time the book focuses on Neve (The sister of the main character from book one), and her ex-boyfriend actor, Oakley, although the book does have a romantic secondary plot running alongside between Adam, the temporary hotel manager, and villager, Ivy.
When Oakley flies to Juniper Island to spend time with Neve, even-though they have split up, it causes emotions to run high, as they both still love one another. The pair know that with Oakley’s high-flying career, the relationship could never work, especially when the secret Neve has been keeping from him eventually comes out.
Can the two of them come up with a plan that will see them both happy, or are they destined to go their separate ways?
Once again Holly Martin has written a superb Christmas book, covering everything a heartfelt Christmas book should.
With complex, yet engaging characters, the book pulls at your heart strings, as well as gives you that uplifting smile, and the occasional giggle.
Featuring characters from the first book, it was lovely to meet up with them again, and carry on their stories, even if some of them only played minor roles in the book.
Christmas Under a Starlit Sky is more emotional than the first, and brings to the forefront the conflicts that people go through, and the sacrifices that sometimes need to be made in relationships.
The book is heart-warming, relaxing, and just the perfect reason to grab a mug of hot chocolate, put your feet up, and visit the delightful Juniper Island once again.
This was another beautifully crafted Christmas book set on Juniper Island where it can be Christmas every day. I had this book at the same time as Christmas under a Cranberry Sky and it's a book I've been savouring, almost sad to pick it up as the anticipation was so high. I really didn't want to come to the end and have to leave the island! But the wait made the book even more enjoyable- I do love Holly's creations. I could live in her Christmassy books.
Neve's actor boyfriend Oakley arrives on Juniper Island with the whirling blades of his private helicopter announcing his arrival. He's come to win her back, but Neve is conscious of his drive and ambition to become a Hollywood heart throb and had let him go. She's hiding a secret and you wonder how this is all going to work out.
Whilst he is there she gets to enjoy the magic of the island she lives on, and see it through his eyes and therefore through the eyes of the guests that she caters for. He introduces her to the little shops where you can buy all sorts of magical christmas goodies.
I loved meeting more of the islanders and seeing where possible future books will take us........please! I loved the glass painting- would love one of those for my wall.
Her characters are so warmly drawn that you experience everything through their eyes and the setting is so wonderfully crafted that I would move there tomorrow. It is my image of the perfect Christmas setting and can just imagine having the most perfect holiday there.
I voluntarily read an arc of this book and enjoyed every single second of it!
I absolutely loved "Christmas under a Cranberry Sky" and I had high hopes I would equally like the second part in this series. Well, I did like it but I wasn't over the moon as much as I have been with the first book.
It was great to return to Juniper Island and the little village called Christmas. There isn't only one couple in the centre of this book, but two. I really liked Neve as well as Oakley. They made a great couple and there were such sweet moments between them. I didn't like all the lies which led into the drama. I really had some trouble with these as they were so unnecessary. Adam and Ivy made another adorable couple and I equally enjoyed reading about the two. Maybe things went a little fast with them but it didn't bother me that much.
Romance is a big point in this story and there were some scenes which really made my heart melt. I am really looking forward to another book set on Juniper Island and returning to all these wonderful characters.
I LOVED this book! It was so great to return to Scotland and the Stardust Lake Hotel. It's the second book in a series but easily read standalone. The writing is fantastic and I just loved these characters. In this one we get not just one wonderful romance but two. Neve is working hard managing the hotel and trying not to think about everything she gave up. Leaving Oakley behind and coming to live and work at the hotel was the right decision. Wasn't it?? Oakley sure doesn't think so and he shows up to show Neve just how wrong she is. And he has no plans of leaving without her. While the drama between Neve and Oakley plays out Adam, the assistant manager, is unexpectedly finding love of his own.
Both the books in this series are great and I would definitely recommend them to everyone.
I received a free ebook copy of this book from the publisher through Net Galley in return for an honest review. I enjoyed this story. It moved at a quick pace with developed characters and a decent storyline. I felt that there was one main story with a few parallel stories happening too. It wasn't as lighthearted as I would have thought a Christmas story would be. A lot of the characters had some heavy issues. The pace seemed a little rushed; but, it didn't detract from the story too much. I think this could have been developed a little more and split into two stories: this one with Neve & Oakley, and another set around Adam & Ivy. That's just my opinion. All in all, it was a nice, enjoyable, seasonal story.
I really struggled with the star rating on this one, I really enjoyed it and I've read quite a few of Holly Martin's books but I've yet to read one that I'm just flabbergasted and must give a 5 star rating! I found the book distracting with the other love story between Adam & Ivy, I feel this could have been another book perhaps as it took away from Oakley (Love this name!) and Neve (really don't like this name) story and relationship.
I found there were few too many characters mentioned in this book and It was hard to keep track of who was who. I also didn't read the first book in the series so that probably would have helped with the character roles a bit more.
I will be reading 1 more holiday book by Holly Martin this year and hope to dive into a few of her series in the spring.
What isn't there to love about Holly Martins books! Christmas under a Starlit Sky was incredibly enjoyable and easy to devour! The characters were loveable and the love stories that unfolded didn't stop short of pulling at your heart strings. This book is the perfect Christmas romance read!
So guys, it is official now, not only is Holly Martin the real Queen of Christmas stories, but Juniper Island stays my absolutely favourite fictional setting! This picturesque island has just got under my skin and even though I am much more this person who’d rather spend her days enjoying the warmth of the sun, I’d make exception for Juniper – please, take me there any time! And the more snow, the better! The story picks up right where “Christmas Under a Cranberry Sky” ended, introducing us to a very shocked Neve seeing her ex – boyfriend arriving at the island, and this time the story focuses closely on their relationship and their will they/won’t they. In theory you could read “Christmas Under a Starlit Sky” as a stand – alone novel but I’d advice you to read the book in the right order, as there is just too much to miss!
“Christmas Under a Starlit Sky” is the perfect mix of the most beautiful Christmas spirit, drama, humour and gorgeous settings. However, I really liked the fact that this time Holly Martin put a stop to too many descriptions – don’t get me wrong, I love her descriptions, I think you could show Holly a gray stone and she would be able to write about it in the most beautiful, descriptive way, totally bringing it to life, so what I mean by saying that she put a stop to them is that she described the island and its surroundings in a very detailed way in the first book in the series, and in “Christmas Under a Starlit Sky” she focused more on characters. And apropos characters – boy, am I glad that I’ve read “Christmas Under a Cranberry Sky”, as I think I’d be a little too overwhelmed by the number of the heroes just entering the scenes – there were many of them, but all of them already known to me, so I didn’t have any problems with knowing who is why and why and what they’re doing – but, to be really honest, I think if I haven’t read the previous book, I’d be confused, as Holly didn’t explain who are all the people, which is only obvious, as we got to know them before.
I enjoyed both the storylines running in this book, this of Neve and Oakley and this of Ivy and Adam – though I have a feeling that the second was a little too chopped, too far – fetched at the moments, but of course I do understand where both of them were coming from and why such reactions. But still, I totally enjoyed the fact that Holly Martin didn’t make the romances go too smoothly, that they were not so straight – forward and that, to be honest, every outcome was possible.
As usually, the characters were created with so much love and feeling! They were all enjoyable and full of depth and for me it is impossible not to fell for Holly Martin’s characters. They make mistakes, they often have some life – changing decisions to be made and they always feel so realistic and true to life. They are also always full of stories, and often they are heart – breaking, but with this author you can be sure one thing, that they are going to get their happy ever after after all – because they all deserve it! I adored Adam and kept my fingers crossed for him and the misunderstanding between him and Ivy made me feel so, so desperate and so, so mad, especially as I liked also Ivy, and I so, so wanted that everything would work out well for them! You know, sometimes you just know better than the characters themselves, you have the feeling that they should be together no matter what, and I had this feeling with Adam and Ivy this time. There are also some mentions of Gabe, Pip and Wren and it was lovely to see them all again, going strong. Holly just always makes it so easy to like her characters, to grow attached to them, and it is always a great joy to see them all again.
Oakley Rey was a very macho character and I have to admit, I had some troubles to get to like him. He was just too confident for my liking, too straight – up and he behaved as if we owed him. Sure, yes, I get it, a film – star, but still, the introducing scenes where he’s just come to the island and behaved as if he was expected there, and going straight to Neve’s room were too much for me. However, quickly I started to warm to him and even if I can’t say that he’s my favourite character, I liked how hard he was on the outside and soft inside, and how he wanted to win his love back – even though it turned out to be not so easy task. However, this time, I had some issued with this love that was to be won back – Neve. I’m usually not so bothered when the characters make decisions that are controversial or are not up to my street, because why shouldn’t they, right, but Neve has reached a totally different level here, in my opinion of course. I don’t want to spoil the reading for you, so I won’t say what was it that bothered me so much, but let me just tell you that it was childish and the never – ending “sacrifices” of both sides were too much.
There was this overwhelming warmth in this story and the feeling of being welcomed and I found “Christmas Under a Starlit Sky” really unputdownable – I wanted to know how it’s going to end and how many curveballs the author is going to throw at the characters. It is a wonderful, festive romance, full of poignant and humorous moments, and it is really all what I could ask for. This story blends secrets, lies, surprises, hope, accidents, misunderstandings together and the end result is a hooking, atmospheric and down – to – earth novel with characters that you root for. I loved to be back to Juniper Island, immediately felt at home there and it was great to be back with the characters that truly felt as your best friends. There is all the time something happening, there is a lot of drama, but it is also full of happy moments. I highly recommend it – and not only to the fans of Christmas, because I am sure that everyone will find something to love about this book.
Neve loves working with her family and the Stardust Lake Hotel is a beautiful place to live. She likes the challenge of being the manager and she has her best friend Adam by her side to help her. Neve is heartbroken though because she misses Oakley. He's a famous actor and Neve thinks there's no place in his life for her, that is why she let him go. There's something she didn't tell him, because knowing her secret might change his entire outlook on life. Oakley misses Neve and wants to be together again, but Neve has kept so many things from him. Is there a way back or does she think it's better to tell him to leave and this time forever?
Adam is working at the Stardust Lake Hotel for just a few months. Neve needs his help and he could use a change of scenery. There's a Christmas village on the island and that is the workplace of many talented artists. Ivy is one of them and finally Adam is ready to open his heart for someone after many years of being alone. It doesn't feel entirely right though, especially not when he will leave in a few months. There's something Ivy is struggling with and she isn't ready to share her feelings with someone new. Will she and Adam have a chance or do their circumstances make it impossible for them to move on?
Christmas Under a Starlit Sky is another great A Town Called Christmas story. There's a lot of grief and heartbreak as both Neve and Ivy are struggling with something and they aren't ready to share this with the man of their dreams. Holly Martin isn't afraid to put difficult issues in a Christmas story and even though it sometimes put a lump in my throat I empathized with the characters and desperately wanted them to be happy. When there's sadness there's usually also hope for the future and that was a big theme in this novel. I couldn't wait to find out what would happen to the two couples and kept my fingers crossed that they would find some much deserved happiness.
Holly Martin has chosen a wonderful setting for her Christmas stories. I loved the idea of a winter wonderland, a special island where everything evolves around Christmas. It's the perfect place for a romantic book. I also liked how friends and family are always there for each other in this story. Life sometimes is a struggle, but there's usually sunshine after the rain, which is a beautiful message and a fabulous theme to write about.
In Holly Martin's second novel of the A Town Called Christmas series, Neve's broken heart would be mended and we would finally meet her movie star boyfriend Oakley. I immediately found Oakley swoony, and settled in to enjoy the novel. It was interesting reading as I wasn't expecting so many mishaps in the romance, but I found the story engaging and I loved the side romance between Adam and Ivy. So this book was pretty darn good in my books!
The story pivots around Neve and Oakley trying to rebuild their relationship as it's obvious from the beginning that they are in love with each other. However, there's a teeny tiny problem which morphs into a series of misunderstandings in this novel, and that's the fact that Neve is pregnant.
I liked Neve and Oakley a lot together. Oakley was so easy going, down to earth and such a kind, generous person. Stardom had not gone to his head. He was also confidant and yet, despite that, he had his insecurities as well. They made the last twenty percent of the novel or so nerve wracking.
And Neve had her own insecurities to contend with as well, which were the root cause of why she broke up with Oakely in the first place, and then, why she made some of the choices she did, which drove me a bit batty at times even if I understood her reasoning. Her reasoning made sense but the flaws were also glaring. However, what's a romance without a little angst? I have to say, I loved how hard Neve fought to keep the love between them from withering away because of her mistakes.
What I loved most about this novel was that despite the misunderstandings, the love that these two had for one another was always present and that made this romance really work for me. I also loved Adam and Ivy's romance and I liked that it was also given the time to grow and gel. This novel gives you two happily ever afters in one read and it does it without one story stealing the spotlight from the other! It's Merry Christmas to romance readers everywhere ♥
