Reese Knightley spends her time creating stories from the characters rattling around in her head. Her love of reading mystery, action and adventure, and fantasy books led to her love of writing. Reese works as a full time writer. She loves to hear from her readers.
I knew this would not be a 5 star read for me from the beginning, but I hoped to like it on the account of finally getting to know Caleb's story and how he survived his captivity. In this regard this book completely failed me. His stay with his kidnappers resembled forced vacation more than anything else. I had to suspend my disbelief when Caleb turned into a ninja black op super soldier with barely any training and was on the same level as men with years in military. Eh no, didn't work for me at all.
As always everybody had nicknames throughout the book, and half the time I had a hard time guessing who was who. I liked Wolf and his story. This is was essentially what carried the story for me. I rooted for him, I hurt for him and wanted him to be happy. The entire Caleb side of the story was a big bust for me. The missions and action side of things were repetitive, made to fit and way too convenient. I guess it's a thing with some authors.
To put it in a nutshell it was fast paced, decently edited, mildly suspenseful romantic action flick. It could have been a lot better for me had the author challenged their readers in regards to Caleb and his ordeal. This was too easy. I hate easy.
Each time I've picked up a book in this series, I've discovered something different that ends up being overly used.
This time round it's the phrase "the warrior" which I swear had appeared at least half a dozen times before the end of the first couple of chapters.
It's a minor issue, in the long scheme of things, but it did become a tad wearing.
However, it's not as objectionable once they've got into the meat of the story, which covers the same timeline as Micah and Alex's book and Wolf is on the hunt for Caleb.
We've got an age gap romance here, but it works for me. Caleb is much older than his years even before he's kidnapped. After, he's learned more skills and matured even faster, so I never felt there was an imbalance between them.
What I did find a bit "suspend disbelief" was the utter lack of any kind of fall-out from his 18 month captivity. It's mentioned briefly, he sees Rush to talk about it, nightmares are referenced once, then that's it.
I know people have different levels of resilience, and Caleb had Dimitri watching his back for a lot of the time, but he was also severely beaten, had his life threatened multiple times and one bloke kept trying to sexually assault him.
It's inconceivable that he'd have walked away without any kind of trauma response at all, never mind be able to walk straight into the Phoenix team.
Still, overall this is definitely one of the better plotlines, it's got a singular focus on the rescue mission and we're in both Caleb and Wolf's heads in turn.
The bad guys might have been dispatched a bit easily for the reputation they'd been given, but I was pleased we didn't get another 'escape' from this team of supposedly top spec black ops.
First of all, it's an age gap. Of those that have an unequal power dynamic to start and an iffy meeting. When they meet and fall in love, Caleb is 17 and a minor and Wolf is somewhere in his 30s and older than Caleb's brother and legal guardian Micah. And they meet twice before he's taken, which makes the next 18 months where Wolf looks for Caleb feel like they're each holding on to a flame versus a love. And when they meet again, Caleb is 19 and dealing (ish) with the trauma of being kidnapped and held in a violent trafficked ring for 18 months, while Wolf is the soldier who saved him. Caleb is young and vulnerable and unequal to him. And that remains for like 90% of the book.
Then there's also an issue with description. What people say Caleb is and how he acts doesn't always match. He's described as mature for his age and has "aged" after his ordeal, but his actions and attitude before and after are pretty much the same. And he leaves his ordeal pretty much unscathed, with no significant change other than grief. Which makes his relationship and actions with Wolf change very little between in the first bit before being taken and later on after he is rescued. And while people call him mature he acts reckless, angers easily and often reacts and fights first and stops to think later. He flips a switch later on, though, without any sort of buildup, which is strange. And had that built on it could have been better, but as it happened it just felt like we were suddenly dealing with someone else.
And, outside of worrying for Caleb and his guilt with Gavin, there's very little of Wolf that is explored. He is a strong soldier stereotype with occasional vulnerable bits. So we have a rock and a reactive teen, and I couldn't connect with either of them. And couldn't even bring myself to root for them. Not even the action could push this book on for me.
I have tried, HARD, to like this series, to like this author's writing style. I have tried to ignore all the giant plot holes, the thread conflict that never really quite panned out. I tried to get past the disjointed writing style, but yeah no, I just can't anymore.
I've wanted to read Caleb's story because of the previous book, however, the execution just fell short. We're still given the flip flop of names from one sentence to another. We're still given a phrase that is used over and over again, simply because the author just didn't know how to write the scenes better. This time, it's not the man, but rather, the warrior. Not much better if you ask me. It's like she couldn't figure out how to use pronouns so yeah, throw those in and call it a day.
As far as the story goes - if you want to write a hard hitting, gritty book, about something as ... let's say delicate as human trafficking, you must go all in. You can't make it fluff, you can't gloss over it. Caleb was abducted, kidnapped, held captive for something like a year and 1/2. However, did he really suffer? I mean like a real person would have ? No, not even close - which again, fluff. In fact, the whole time he was abducted ended up coming off as training to become part of the Phoenix unit, since the second he was rescued, he joined it, and was basically as good as the ones who'd been in it and have more training than he does. Come. On. Could have been grittier, could have been more compelling, what a missed opportunity.
Wolf - meh. Honestly I didn't get anything special about him, sure he was kinda cute when he was with Caleb, but that's it. I just ... as a veteran I get annoyed when authors don't bother to take being in the military seriously in their books. I get it, they need to make it so it fits their story, but then you end up with something that comes off as such BS for people like me.
Anyways, as I have said in previous reviews, the thread of conflict that goes through the series does not come together at all. It's almost like she threw all these things in, but then didn't really know how to work it out in the long run. Why was Caleb kidnapped ? Because they wanted to get at Rossi, the head of Phoenix. Why ? Because they wanted money to fund their bad people empire. And how long did they try to extort said money from Rossi? A year and 1/2.
Suffice it to say, that I simply can't bring myself to read any more books by this author. If you're not as picky as I am, I'm sure these will probably be great for you, so enjoy. But me? Nah, I'm officially breaking up with this author.
I needed to read something a little different than normal (for me) so I picked up this book and surprisingly I really enjoyed it. Big surly military men trying to rescue one of their own; Older soldier trying to deny his attraction to a younger man and the younger man not having any of it; and a lot of trudging in the snow and bitter cold. I liked it but maybe not for everyone.
I think this may be my favorite book of Reese’s so far. It’s a high intensity, thrilling, gripping, action-packed military romance that I wish I could experience on the big screen. I love these guys and the family they’ve found with each other. They warm my heart and make me smile.
I wouldn’t mind being bitten by Wolf or anything really with him. He is one sexy bundle of skilled and lethal. I am blown away by Caleb though; his bravery and his fierce strength amaze me. I also adore his smart aleck nature. Wolf definitely has his hands full and I wish I could be a fly on their wall. “I’m going to keep you for the rest of my life.” These two together, make me swoon and sigh and it doesn’t hurt one bit that they’re also burn up your pages hot. Suddenly I’m craving cinnamon and butterscotch. Another winner in this phenomenal series and I can’t wait for the next one.
I had a very rocky start with this series, I gave the first book a 2* review because of the narration, I persevered because the series was well rated and overall I’m glad I did. Whilst there were flaws with repetition, and some of the characters decisions seemed purely to create angst, there’s also still far too many random characters I did actually quite enjoy the continuity throughout the series. I looked forward to this book most of all, I was a little disappointed we didn’t get to see more of the two MC’s, like with all the books I’d have much preferred more character building and relationship building but the romance was good and there’s definitely something that kept drawing me back in! Worth a binge read for sure!
5 good stars!! One of my favorite books in the series if you want to enjoy the book it is necessary to read the previous books in the series the story is about Caleb and Wolf and I was so happy to see caleb and wolf HEA
I was intrigued by this one, being about Caleb during his captivity and escape(?). We’ve been along for the ride with Micah and Alex during the search for Caleb in the last book but now we finally get to find out what actually happened to Caleb.
Alas. It starts out with 17 year old Caleb meeting a 30-something Wolf and getting their flirt on. I like a good age gap romance, however a man in his 30s becoming obsessed with a literal minor is messed up. And it is obsession. Wolf meets Caleb super briefly, then can’t get him out of his mind, so he goes to check on him once and they end up spending an afternoon together, getting a meal. That’s it. Not even a full day’s worth of collective time together before Caleb is abducted.
Now, if you tell me a horny 17 year old believes he’s falling in love at first sight with a hot, built military man in his 30s who is nice to him, I have no trouble believing that. I’m sure many of us can remember some intense teenage crushes. For Wolf though? That’s fucked up. Now he stares at pictures of this kid he barely spent any time with like “Hold on, baby. I’m coming for you”. Yuck. Wolf is old enough that Caleb could have been older too and still maintained the large age gap without so much ick. At least make him 19 or 20, Micah could be trying to convince him to go to college or something. Caleb has had a traumatic upbringing, it’s not unbelievable he’d take some time after high school feeling a bit untethered, older man comes along… Or just have a platonic first meeting. Let Caleb admire ‘big, bad, Military Elite’ Wolf, have Wolf just think Caleb is a sweet kid and then have that admiration /develop/ during their time alone, during the rescue (and I honestly don’t think Wolf would have had sex with him mid-rescue if he’s a good man. That was a no for me too). Wolf feeling responsible is more than enough motivation to hunt tirelessly for Caleb, you don’t need the creepy pedophilic (and nearly baseless) infatuation.
I know Dimitri is a ‘bad guy’ but he and Caleb have a better relationship because they’ve actually spent time together... I’m sad I didn’t get a redemption arc or undercover, also trying to bring down this trafficking ring, Russian agent Dimitri. He’s more likeable than Wolf so far.
After the rescue. Holy moly, Caleb acts like a little shit. An untrained civilian, demanding to tag along on a military operation (with ‘secret’ teams like phoenix and infinity that he shouldn’t even know about, nonetheless) and he’s throwing a tantrum like Micah and Wolf are the ones being unreasonable?
And yes, he’s “legal” now but of course Micah is pissed off at Wolf and concerned about Caleb once he learns they’ve had sex. Caleb was abducted at 17 by a massive sex trafficking ring. Caleb literally hasn’t even gotten to go home yet, he’s still mid-rescue, really. He and Micah haven’t properly spoken, Micah doesn’t know how traumatized Caleb is (lbr, Caleb probably doesn’t even know how traumatized he is yet, he’s still in survival mode). Micah doesn’t know if his baby brother has been repeatedly sexually assaulted by his captors over the last year and a half and now he learns this man he trusted, a man nearly twice his little brother’s age, took advantage of Caleb during his rescue? Who wouldn’t be enraged?
The actual adults talking to each other after his tantrum like “wow, I’m so proud of him”…?????????? I’m sorry, I do not see that at all. Pop that boy back to HQ for protection and get him a therapist, stat.
*sigh* Suspension of disbelief just doesn’t work for me here. You can believe this is a secret group of super elite, highly trained military/ex-military, the best-of-the-best, experts in their fields, or you can believe they’ll just shrug and let someone’s traumatized kid brother join them on a dangerous mission to track down a psychopathic rapist murderer, but then you’d have to believe they’re kind of idiots. Both things can’t be true.
Wolf is for sure worse but this book had me disliking both MCs (and Rossi just gets progressively worse).
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

I loved this story of the two men with an age gap who do everything to survive the psychopath and be together again. Lots of danger and drama in this story as Wolf fought to save Caleb. Easy to read, feel and understand. This was an MM story with mature content.
Team Phoenix are still searching for Micahs brother Caleb and in this book we get the background of how he got abducted and how he and Wolf met. With almost everyone in power in the trafficking ring that Phoenix hunts gone Caleb is being brought to the one that is still alive. Maz is the one that gets of on torturing people and Caleb won't be unharmed for long if Maz gets him. And it's a race of who's getting to him first, Phoen, Wolf or the bad guy.
I really enjoyed this book, but it does have violence and some horrible things happens. Our main characters Wolf and Caleb does have an age gap and if they would have gotten together when they first met it might not have worked out. But after everything and all of Calebs new experiences they are more compatible and I love that Caleb doesn't take any shit and can stand up for himself.
Will definitely check out the Code of Honor series
In book five we meet Caleb, Micah’s little brother who was abducted a year prior. The one Lash has been trying to find on his leave of absence with Phoenix. In book four we briefly met Wolf, a military friend of Fear’s who’s been looking non-stop for Caleb. Well in this book you find out why. The first meeting between Caleb (17) and Wolf (34) had me concerned but not because of the age gap ( I love an age gap when it’s done just like this!) but because Caleb had already been through so much in his young life and I just felt he wasn’t emotionally or mature enough to peruse something with Wolf, despite book/school wise he was off the charts. He just makes you want to pick him up and take care of him but the growth and maturity that happens while he’s captured makes you just fall in love with his character. 😍 I loved how this story ended up unfolding. And of course Reese throws a little extra love in the epilogue 💍!
This story gave me a rollercoaster of emotions! I love it so much!
Caleb is one-of-a-kind! Amidst what he is going through, he remains positive, hopeful, determined, unrelenting! He is a survivor in every sense of the word!
Wolf will never stop! What he feels for the young man is the real thing, although he will fight it! He will scour the world to look for Caleb! He believes in his heart that Caleb is alive!
I love all the books Ms. Reese Knightley has written in all her series! But this is my new favorite! Non-stop action and the emotions it evokes in me is so intense! I love the strength, determination and humanity in both characters! I am looking forward to the next book already! Congratulations Ms. Reese!
We've been waiting for this book. We loved Caleb from Alex and Micah's story and wanted to see him get his book and most especially happy ending.
But Reese made sure that the poor guys didn't get it right away. She made them work for it. And it was fantastic. I loved the action sequences as Caleb fought back and where Wolf just kept following. it made their reunion so much the better. There was so much heat between the two but angst as well as Wolf tried to deal with a few things. I loved this book. Reese clearly shows you everything going on and leaves you hanging or aching for more. I loved seeing all the characters from the previous books. It was definitely a treat.
Highly recommend if you enjoy high action and fantastic characters
I can t decide if I liked this book or not. The series is among my favorite but this book was just too unreal even for a fictional book. Caleb gets kidnapped for more than a year and at the end of it he comes out perfectly fine, no PTS, no fear, nothing. He gets recruited 2 days after his rescue and jumps into the mission like his kidnapping was just a vacation. Caleb constantly thinking of Wolf as his warrior annoyed me to no end. The pet name, nickname or whatever was used too much and it made zero sense to me. Although their attachment to eachother was over the top cheesy it was cute and I liked it. That said, let s be real, they met for 5 minuntes and that was enough for Wolf to drop everything and look for Caleb for more than a year.
This book started off better than the last two. Overall, 2.5 stars. I just couldn't raise it to three for multiple reasons. The author seems to want to write action and tension but doesn't deliver. It takes a while to explain the Infinity group. Moreover, the crossover between Phoenix, DOD, and Infinity is not realistic. The whole SecDef insertion is ridiculous.
Still needs more editing. Writing is not succinct. Also, too tame for this genre. There could have been some good scenes with the cage. Author chose not to go down that path which was a mistake. Either don't mention the cage or own it in the story.
The scene at the airport was unrealistic. Timeline issues in several places of the story. I struggle with this series.
The much anticipated story of Caleb and Wolf is here. Most remember Caleb is Micah’s younger brother, and this is his story. There is a significant age gap between the two main characters which happens to be a trope I enjoy. The reader gets the full story that was first written in book 4 but from a different perspective. Keep in mind this book is not a standalone. I highly recommend reading the entire series in order but at the very least book four needs to be read first for optimal enjoyment. And as is typical of Reese Knightley books there is plenty of action and adventure with mystery/suspense to go with romance.
I just love this series. So glad we got to see Wolf do his thing. Kind of wanted more Wolf and Caleb time though.
This story was definitely a parallel timeline to Lash & Fear's book. I felt like I reading the same scenes over again just from a different POV a lot of the time. Don't get me wrong, I still really enjoyed it, but I kind of skimmed some parts.
Can't wait for more from this series or spin-off's.
At last we find out exactly what happened to Caleb after being taken by Vladimir who was the boss of the people traffickers. We’ve met the enigmatic Wolf in earlier books and as he searches for Caleb, we find out more of exactly who he is and what he does. Phoenix continues to search also and the trials of Caleb after the last time we see him, being thrown into a helicopter as Wolf chases after him, are graphic. A courageous young man with strength of characters and an almost photographic memory, Caleb also sparkles with joie de vivre. I love this series and this book is one of the best if a good lot.
Number 5 in the Out For Justice series, this was a riveting story. Although some plot points were over the top, I was able to roll with it and enjoyed it for what it was. We get Caleb and Wolf's story. Caleb is the younger brother of Micah, who gets abducted by the human traffickers that Phoenix is after. Caleb is one plucky, brave teenager who never gives up hope even though he was held and abused for over a year. Wolf is determined to find and rescue him along with the rest of the Phoenix team. A lot of action and angst happens along the way but they do end up together for a satisfying HEA ending.
This book was so worth the wait. Wolf is a loner who meets a boy that makes him feel things he hasn't felt. He left the boy because he was obligated to the military but a phone call changes him forever. Caleb was stolen off the streets for revenge and never gave up hope he would be rescued. The man he longs for finally finds him but keeps pushing him away. Seeking retribution against the people who kidnapped him caleb proves to wolf that he loves and needs him. It's a ling road but they do get their happy ending.

This series always amazes me! My only problem is I started it when the first book came out so I wait rather impatiently for the next installment! I was happy to read about Wolf and Caleb. The spark of initial chemistry is great. The way the book transitioned from the prologue to 18 months earlier and right back into the reason for the prologue was flawless. Not once was I lost or need to go back and read. I love the way every character of Phoenix is always included in each book, it give you the sense of family that the group formed. I look forward to the next book.
