This definitive edition collects all of Kilian Eng’s otherworldly landscapes and retro-futuristic illustrations in one massive volume, including previously unpublished works. Each dreamlike image immerses the viewer in a unique environment, full of engrossing detail and surreal beauty.
As a picture book, it's a quick "read." The brief introduction addresses Eng's love of science fiction, and his desire to depict positive futures rather than dystopias. The book is a generous, large-format collection of three earlier Compendium volumes, each page a single image. The third volume is a leap forward in complexity, synthesizing Peter Max, Eyvind Earle, Maxfield Parrish, and Moebius (and a smidgen of Roger Dean), but also furthering his own style and artistic voice. I anticipate spending many hours getting lost in these pages.
