Little Buggy is determined to learn to fly-- today . But flying is not as easy as it looks. It takes a few falls, a lot of patience, and plenty of gentle encouragement (and help up off the ground) from Dad. Some bugs might give up . . . but not Little Buggy. Popular illustrator Kevin O'Malley has created a funny and warmhearted father-son story perfect for any child who must tackle something difficult for the first time, and for parents having a hard time letting them fall. With the inspiring message that learning something new isn't easy--but success can come when you least expect it--this book is the ideal gift for adventurers of any age.

Kevin O'Malley is the co-author and illustrator of the popular Miss Malarkey series as well as the award-winning Once Upon a Cool Motorcycle Dude and the national bestseller Gimme Cracked Corn and I Will Share. He lives in Baltimore, Maryland. He also has visited hundreds and hundreds of schools.
What I really like about this O'Malley title is the tenacity of the younger that readers might infer has come from previous lessons. No spoilers, but we see the junior bug continue to climb up the grass blade before we hear the encouragement of the father.
Text is set in speech balloons with large paneled illustrations making LITTLE BUGGY a "ladder" for later graphic novel reads.
A super lesson in growth and new experiences. A super example of celebration of father/son relationships.
This is a humorous tale with adorable cartoon characters. The book seemed to be a cross between a graphic novel and picture book, with lots of dialogue on the illustrated panels.
The narrative is humorous and even though it's mainly dialogue, it's fun to read aloud. We've also read Little Buggy Runs Away, which has much of the same charm as this first story. We enjoyed reading this book together.
