Welcome to post-nuclear Arizona. Try to stay alive.
College student Jenn Jansen just wants to stay out of World War Three. But today, she'll have to face it head-on.
On the morning of April 28, 2062, a mysterious power outage leaves Jenn and the town of Flagstaff, Arizona, in the dark and isolated form the outside world. Then five mushroom clouds appear on the horizon, rising above Jenn’s home city of Phoenix.
Panic, fear, and desperation grip Flagstaff and pit its war-weary citizens against the police and against each other. Torn between finding her family in Phoenix and helping her friends in Flagstaff, Jenn is forced to confront the brutal realities of this new, unforgiving world.
Desolation is a near-future post-apocalyptic survival thriller with a female lead. This box set includes the first three books in the series: Desolation, Into the Inferno, and The Wolves Within.
I was born and raised in the mountains of British Columbia, Canada. After earning a master's degree in military history and spending a good chunk of my twenties studying the British Army in the First World War, I returned to BC and began writing fiction. Nowadays, I'm a husband, a pet owner, and the commissioner of my fantasy baseball league (though sadly not the champion). DNF for me. I made it through most of the 1st book, but it just didn't hold my attention. I wanted to like it, but...
Set several decades into our future, the entire world is seemingly at war and the U.S. is in bad straights that will only get worse.
This is a cautionary tale of becoming too dependent on "smart" anything. This story only highlights how badly things can go during a nuclear and EMP attack.
The fmc, Jenn, was either overemotional or "in charge" with little rhyme or reason as she bounced in between comatose, combative, and manic. Her boyfriend was supportive but seemed weak in mind and nature.
The family Jenn lived with while attending college was very nice. Too soft, honestly. The homeowners, husband and wife, were retired, and the husband an ex-cop. Who SHOULD have seen what was coming yet had to be pulled into action (eyeroll).
It moved too slowly for me in the beginning, so it had trouble drawing me in. It does pick up the pace, but between the slow start and an unlikable fmc, I was done.
The portrayal of people who choose to grab for personal power instead of making a united stand for more than survival is showcased along with individual and familial relationships. Add in some great gun battles and you have a series worth reading.
Enjoyable story of a combination of different characters brought together in disaster and how they worked together to continue a way of life they could all participate in. Loved it.
An excellent story from this exciting end of the world series! I will look for more by this writer! I really enjoyed this, first work of David Lucin, well done!
Merged review:
A great box set! Well worth a read! Good characters, very enjoyable! I do strongly recommend!
This was a great book. It shows what a mother will go through to get back to her son. Charlie tries saving herself and another couple after the EMP goes off and then a nuclear bib but, Charlie and Alison are on a bus after work is over waiting for everyone to show up. Charlie is the drive but the bus drives itself. They had not got far when the EMP went off and the bus hits the vehicle that also stops. They all figure out the power is out. People realize their phones won’t work. Charlie is the only one that knows it was an EMP and she has things in her go bag that she takes with her everywhere. I look forward to reading the next books. My TBR list is long but I will get to it.
This book was really terrific! I not only enjoyed it, I loved it and can't wait to finish the series. There is lots of drama and a bit of stress. Sometimes you think you know what will happen but it is something different. If you decide to give this a read you will not regret it. It was an easy quick read, but not real short.
Ground Zero: A Desolation Novella by David Living is a realistic look into what could happen if we get to reliant on artificial intelligence. A must read.
