Biba Caggiano is the author of many Italian cookbooks and the maistro and owner of an upscale yet downhome restaurant in Sacramento. Her cookbooks are a traveler's guide to Italy, some of them with addresses in an index. Try the polpotonne is Roma? The recipe is here. Try the tomatoe bread soup at the "Chingale de Bianco" in Firenze? The recipe is here. What a way to learn how to cook Italian!

While our edition of this book is just a modest paperback by HP Books, it is clearly one of our favorite go to cookbooks for Italian food. Don't be discouraged by the lack of photographs, every recipe in this book is special. Try the two recipes for veal shanks (we use lamb) which are superb! The "Hunter-Style chicken" (aka. chicken cacciatora) is not only easy and fabulous, but also good for you with all the vegetables! I do make slight changes in the recipes to reduce fat and increase vegetables, but Biba Caggiano is clearly a great chef! Last night we had lamb "Shanks Triest-Style" with a plate of roasted vegetables and some crusty bread, and we thought, "Who needs to go out and spend big bucks at a restaurant?"

Killer recipes. Simple and delicious. My go-to Italian cookbook, particularly for sauces. Her Vodka sauce is the one!

Wonderful stories and recipes of Northern Italian cooking. That's my family heritage, and her stories resonate with my family's recipes and traditions.
