Os Grandes Pensadores da Economia

Rate this book
Great Economic Thinkers presents an accessible introduction to the lives and works of thirteen of the most influential economists of modern times: Adam Smith, David Ricardo, John Stuart Mill, Karl Marx, Alfred Marshall, Joseph Schumpeter, John Maynard Keynes, and Nobel Prize winners Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman, John Forbes Nash, Jr., Daniel Kahneman, Amartya Sen, and Joseph Stiglitz. Free from confusing jargon and equations, the book describes key concepts put forward by these thinkers and shows how they have come to shape how we see ourselves and our society. Readers will consider the role played by the division of labor, wages and rents, cognitive biases, saving, entrepreneurship, game theory, liberalism, laissez-faire, and welfare economics.

All of the economists featured have had a profound influence on our attitudes towards market intervention and regulation, taxation, trade, and monetary policy. Each of the chapters—all written by an acknowledged expert—combines a biographical outline of a single thinker with critical analysis of their contribution to economic thought. If you’ve ever wanted to find out more about the theorists who gave us the invisible hand, Marxism, Keynesianism, creative destruction, behavioral economics, and many other foundational concepts of economics, this collection of essays is the perfect place to start.

For those who have no understanding of economics, the Great Economic Thinkers is great book to begin with the history of economic thoughts. It is a remarkable introduction to the greatest economic thinkers of all time.

I just read a few chapters, it is more about economic thinkers and less about economics

Decent overview, but falls short of delivering any meaningful critique or depth. The writers present each economist’s work in an overly simplistic, almost celebratory manner, without diving into the nuances or exploring the contentious aspects of their theories.
Instead of examining any criticisms, limitations, or ongoing debates surrounding these ideas, the essays read more like high school summaries—“who is this economist,” “what did they do,” and “why are they famous.” While the basics are covered, there’s no engagement with the counterpoints that would give readers a more balanced understanding. Adding perspectives on why certain theories are flawed or controversial would have made it far more insightful.

There are hundreds of the books on the captioned subject. For those who have relative or no understanding of economics, the Great Economic Thinkers is great treasure to begin with the history of economic thoughts. This book is a remarkable brief introduction to the greatest economic thinkers of all time, from Adam Smith to living legend on inequality studies, Joseph Stiglitz. Taking analogy of Schumpeter's history of economic thoughts, this book justifies its content as it goes through biographies and development of economic thoughts of the thirteen thinkers that the book considers merit for.

This is a very interesting book which presents succinctly the ideas of 13 Economists from the origin of the field to this day.

I would have given it 5 , but far from it being an introduction - it sounds more like a review of their lives. Not easily accessible to someone with basic or no understanding of economics. From the title, that should have been the case IMHO.

I really liked this because I learnt a lot of new stuff and that’s one of my main reasons for reading. I have very little knowledge of economics but this book is a great introduction to the most important thinkers. It’s not overly complicated so accessible to many.
