Other well-known works include Moloch (1896), Olesya (1898), Junior Captain Rybnikov (1906), Emerald (1907), and The Garnet Bracelet (1911) (which was made into a 1965 movie). Vladimir Nabokov styled him the Russian Kipling for his stories about pathetic adventure-seekers, who are often "neurotic and vulnerable."
Kuprin was a son of Ivan Ivanovich Kuprin, a minor government official who died of cholera during 1871 at the age of thirty-seven years. His mother, Liubov' Alekseevna Kuprina, Tatar princess (of the Kulunchakovs), like many other nobles in Russia, had lost most of her wealth during the 19th century. Kuprin attended the Razumovsky boarding school during 1876, and during 1880 finished his education in the Second Moscow Military High School (Cadet Corps) and Alexander Military School, spending a total of ten years in these elite military institutions. His first short story, The Last Debut, was published during 1889 in a satirical periodical. "In February 1902, Kuprin and Maria Karlovna Davydova were married, their daughter Lidia born in 1903." Kuprin's mother died during 1910.
Kuprin ended military service during 1894, after which he tried many types of job, including provincial journalism, dental care, land surveying, acting, circus performer, church singer, doctor, hunter, fisher, etc. Reportedly, "all of these were subsequently reflected in his fiction." His first essays were published in Kiev in two collections. Reportedly, "although he lived in an age when writers were carried away by literary experiments, Kuprin did not seek innovation and wrote only about the things he himself had experienced and his heroes are the next generation after Chekhov's pessimists."
Although the 1896 short story Moloch first made his name known as a writer, it was his novel The Duel (1905) which made him famous. "Kuprin was highly praised by fellow writers including Anton Chekhov, Maxim Gorky, Leonid Andreyev, Nobel Prize-winning Ivan Bunin" and Leo Tolstoy who acclaimed him a true successor to Chekhov. After publication of The Duel he paid less and less interest to fancy literature and began to spend time in pubs and brothels. His sensationalist novel about the lurid life of prostitutes, The Pit (1915), was accused by Russian critics of excessive Naturalism.
Although not a conservative, he did not agree with Bolshevism. While working for a brief time with Maxim Gorky at the World Literature publishing company, he criticized the Soviet regime. During spring 1919, from Gatchina near Petrograd, Kuprin left the country for France. He lived in Paris for most of the next 17 years, succumbing to alcoholism. He wrote about this in much of his work. He eventually returned to Moscow on May 31, 1937, just a year before his death, at the height of the Great Purge. His return earned publication of his works within the Soviet Union.
Kuprin died during the spring of 1938 in Leningrad and is interred near his fellow writers at the Literaturskiye Mostki in the Volkovo Cemetery (Volkovskoye Memorial Cemetery) in Leningrad. A minor planet 3618 Kuprin, discovered by Soviet astronomer Nikolai Stepanovich Chernykh in 1979 is named after him.

Chưa từng có cuốn sách nào mà tôi muốn đem đi nhóm lò như cuốn này, nó còn không xứng để kê chân bàn. Tất cả những lời văn hoa mĩ, tất cả những trân châu đá quý được miêu tả trong đây không cứu vớt nổi một cốt truyện như hạch. “Một tình yêu trong sáng, cao cả, đầy tính nhân văn”. Làm sao một người đã đọc truyện lại có thể viết được những dòng giới thiệu này, sau đó không hề thấy tủi hổ mỗi lần soi gương?
Vậy rốt cuộc ‘Sulamif’ nói về cái gì mà tôi lại chê tan nát đến thế? Truyện thực chất kể về cuộc tình chóng vánh giữa nhà vua kiêm “chịch thủ” Solomon (45 tuổi) với em rau teen Sulamif (13 tuổi). Sau khi chén cả nghìn mỹ nữ khắp bốn phương (mất vài trang giấy để liệt kê hết các nàng đã qua tay vua), Solomon trúng tiếng sét ái tình với nàng dân nữ trẻ trung Sulamif. Sau khi khen đủ các bộ phận trên người nàng rồi lịch sự hỏi thăm xem em gái nàng có xinh không (may thay, em nàng mới 9 tuổi), vua rước nàng về cung để… e hèm, yêu trong sáng. Vua ban cho Sulamif đủ thứ vàng bạc châu báu, thi thoảng còn kể xấu mấy người tình cũ để mua vui cho nàng. Solomon bĩu môi chê nữ hoàng xứ Sheba, người phụ nữ đẹp xinh và thông minh nhất, là “thông minh vụn vặt của đàn bà”. Vì vậy mà sau khi đã no xôi chán chè, ngài đã dùng trí tuệ quảng đại kiểu đàn ông của mình để chơi khăm nữ hoàng, đến đây tôi phải cảm phục lớp da mặt dày như thớt của nhà vua. Còn nhân vật phản diện của chúng ta, đương nhiên là bà vợ già ngoài 30 của nhà vua đang nổi cơn ghen tuông. Không có gì ngạc nhiên khi hoàng hậu sai người đi xiên cả đôi, tiếc thay lại trượt mất kẻ nặng tội nhất (Nếu truyện đầy tính nhân văn như giới thiệu, đáng lẽ Solomon mới là người ăn một dao rồi lăn ra chết). Tuy cảm thông với hoàng hậu, tôi vẫn thấy chị làm vậy là dại. Là tôi, tôi sẽ ăn chơi phè phỡn, rồi nằm chống mắt lên xem chúng nó hạnh phúc được bao lâu trước khi nhà vua chuyển qua chăn em rau mới.
Ngoài phần nội dung nhảm nhí ở trên, truyện còn “sexist” vô cùng. Cùng một đức tính, nếu là rau non thì bạn sẽ được ca ngợi là “hào phóng trong tình yêu”, nếu là cơm nguội thì bạn sẽ bị chê là “háo dâm quá độ”. Cùng một hành động, nếu là đàn ông thì bạn “không cấm trái tim bất cứ một niềm lạc thú nào”, nếu là đàn bà thì bạn là “dấu hiệu của những điều ô uế và bất hạnh”. Cùng tuổi ngũ tuần, nếu là đàn ông thì bạn được miêu tả đẹp như thần, nếu là đàn bà thì bạn có một “sắc đẹp bắt đầu tàn úa” và “thân hình mềm nhão”. Hỡi vua Solomon, có phải ngài đã chuyển sinh để viết truyện ca ngợi bản thân không?
Tóm lại, giờ đã là thế kỷ 21, chúng ta nên xem xét việc chôn cất vài tác phẩm cũ dưới ba tấc đất, đừng bao giờ đào chúng lên để đem đi xuất bản nữa.

Это повесть было прямо очень хорошо, история о Саломона, но важно тут не история, а как всё было написано, я такого не читал в Куприна, каждый раз когда его почитал, всегда какой то сурприз, это повесть полностью в символизм, мне очень понравилось.

I know this is based on The Song of Songs of Solomon but it's not excuse of portraying Solomon as Gary Stu. Kuprin can write but the worshiping style- I absolutely hated that.
The romance between 45 year old man and 13 year old girl is portrayed as the true love and whatnot...*gets a bucket to vomit* Yeah, right. But what did expect after all?

nói chớ là 1 quyển sách nhỏ nhưng rất gợi cảm và đầy nhục cảm (duyên dáng chứ không trần trụi thô tục như các bạn sách thời nay)

Hasta ahora mi única aproximación al decadentismo había sido con la obra "Allá lejos" (1891) del autor francés Joris-Karl Huysmans. Por lo que he podido observar en las obras decadentistas hay una constante utilización de léxico culto en estructuras sintácticas complejas. Son textos con tendencia a la grandilocuencia, un estilo que no siempre consigue "elevar" al lector en mi humilde opinión. El decadentismo rechaza "lo delicado, lo precioso, lo raro, [va] en contra [de] lo insípido del Tiempo presente". Los autores decadentes eran "Los Elegidos", cuya misión era crear obras literarias que se alejaran de la decadencia literaria imperante en aquella época (finales del siglo XIX).
EN RESUMEN, los decadentes eran señores, en general, con algo de pasta, de morro fino y una vida bastante prosaica que gustaban de comerse las pollas los unos a los otros, convencidos todos ellos de que eran special snowflakes andantes por emplear vocablos que desconocía la mayoría del pululacho. Ah, y también por escribir historias con un marcado tono obscuro y artificioso añadiendo algún elemento "remoto raruno".
Yo no sé si Суламифь o Sulamita (1909) es comparable a Salomé de Oscar Wilde ya que no he leído esta última pieza literaria, por suerte o por desgracia. Lo que sí sé es que Kuprin debía de estar muy aburrido por estos años para escribir Sulamita. Si tuviera que describir esta novela corta con un adjetivo sin duda utilizaría: "innecesaria". No aporta nada. ¿Está bien escrita? Bajo los parámetros estilísticos del decadentismo, pues sí, es una maravilla; un orgasmo tras otro para los sentidos. Pero bajo mi punto de vista es ese zurrullo que no quiere, ya sabes, salir. Narración rimbombante y, en segundo lugar, presuntuosa. Al final lo único que nos está contando Aleksandr Kuprín con la escusa de "estoy escribiendo una historia epiquísima basada en El cantar de los cantares, comedme los huevos por lo bien escrita y documentada que está" es la historia de un hombre de cuarenta y cinco años que fuerza a una cría de trece años a mantener relaciones sexuales con él porque se ha encaprichado de su juventud y virtud. Y como el muy atontao' del protagonista es un imbécil de carnet, al final la que sale mal parada es ella.
Y nada de esto sucede en Rusia ni en las proximidades, lo que añade una dosis más de decepción al asunto.
Lo que sí me ha gustado mucho ha sido la ambientación oriental. Es un aspecto muy trabajado que me ha llegado a fascinar en ciertos puntos. El resto de la historia, como he dicho, deja bastante que desear.
Concluyendo, recomiendo leer Sulamita si queréis saber las aportaciones de los escritores rusos en las vanguardias de finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX. Si no estáis especialmente interesados en este tema, leed otras obras de A. Kuprín (El estiercol) u otros autores rusos.
Pd: La edición es una maravilla; como siempre Nevsky es una apuesta segura.

WTF! This is Fifty Shades under the cover of a Russian classic! And the story wasn't any better in 1908 than it was in 2011.
You want to have evidence? Here you go: Horny Solomon seeing his newest crush the first time, of course there's this fateful wind coming up... "And when thou didst turn around in answer to my call, and the wind arose, I did see beneath thy raiment thy two nipples and methought: Here be two young roes that are twins, which feed among the lilies. This thy stature was like to a palm tree, and thy breasts to clusters of grapes."
And then, doesn't this back and forth and oh so much thoughts seem familiar somehow?
"What dost thou with me!" says Sulamith faintly, closing her eyes. But Solomon passionately whispers near her very mouth: "Thy lips, O my spouse, drop as the honeycomb; honey and milk are under thy tongue.... O, come away with me, speedily. Here, behind the wall, it is dark and cool. None shall see us. The green is soft here underneath the cedars." "Nay, nay, leave me. I desire it not, I can not." "Sulamith ... thou dost desire it, thou dost desire it.... Come to me, my sister, my beloved!"
And just with that, thou dost desire it, and some promises à la Christian Gray: "But have no fear, and put thy trust in me. I shall cause thee no grief. I shall give thee such joy compared with which all things upon earth are without significance", the young girl is like 'yeah, maybe I do desire this stranger who's three times as old as I am' and tadaa, they're in an obsessive love with each other and what man could resist this offer?! "Thou wouldst instruct me; I would cause thee to drink of the juice of my pomegranates."
Still another unbelievably romantic exclamation somehow didn't make it into the Fifty Shades but wouldn't everybody like to see Christian saying "Seven hundred wives have I known and three hundred concubines, and virgins without number,—thou art but one, my fair!" and Anastasia answering "I desire to be but thy slave, Solomon. Behold, I have put my ear to the post of the door. I beseech thee,—in accordance with the law of Moses, nail down my ear in witness of my voluntary bondage before thee."?? (Yes, really happened like this in the book, I'm not simply putting quotations together in a funny way...even though I wished it would be like this!). I guess nailing somebody's ear to a door post doesn't go in 21st century romance, which would be the only explanation for me to why E L James missed out on that.
There's even a Mrs. Robinson! But the "older" (she's 30...but when you think of Sulamith being 13, well...) lover goes a little further in this case, but of course I don't want to spoil all the "fun". So if you're brave enough and if you thought that the Fifty Shades were quite okay but would have been PERFECT if there just were some old religious rites and some famous examples of the judgement of Solomon included, then go and find out where this all leads to!
Well, to sum it up? Apparently E L James wasn't the first to come up with the idea of rich 'well experienced' man hitting on submissive naive young girl and putting it into a cheesy story with some sex involved...and having the characters say things like "farewell" and "thou shalt" doesn't really make the plot any better, even though I have to admit that it at least doesn't let Kuprin look as illiterate as E L James seems to be.

Still another unbelievably romantic exclamation somehow didn't make it into the Fifty Shades but wouldn't everybody like to see Christian saying "Seven hundred wives have I known and three hundred concubines, and virgins without number,—thou art but one, my fair!" and Anastasia answering "I desire to be but thy slave, Solomon. Behold, I have put my ear to the post of the door. I beseech thee,—in accordance with the law of Moses, nail down my ear in witness of my voluntary bondage before thee."?? (Yes, really happened like this in the book, I'm not simply putting quotations together in a funny way...even though I wished it would be like this!). I guess nailing somebody's ear to a door post doesn't go in 21st century romance, which would be the only explanation for me to why E L James missed out on that.
There's even a Mrs. Robinson! But the "older" (she's 30...but when you think of Sulamith being 13, well...) lover goes a little further in this case, but of course I don't want to spoil all the "fun". So if you're brave enough and if you thought that the Fifty Shades were quite okay but would have been PERFECT if there just were some old religious rites and some famous examples of the judgement of Solomon included, then go and find out where this all leads to!
Well, to sum it up? Apparently E L James wasn't the first to come up with the idea of rich 'well experienced' man hitting on submissive naive young girl and putting it into a cheesy story with some sex involved...and having the characters say things like "farewell" and "thou shalt" doesn't really make the plot any better, even though I have to admit that it at least doesn't let Kuprin look as illiterate as E L James seems to be.

В процессе чтения оказалось, что повесть носит эротический оттенок :-) Решил почитать, потому что понравилось как написана другая повесть Куприна - "Гранатовый браслет". На это раз тоже все хорошо, однако сюжет не шибко заинтересовал. А когда читатель переносится в другие места, где нет главных героев, так вообще хочется дать храпа. Однако, многие стра��ицы написаны очень красивым языком, за что мне и нравится Куприн. Короче, ок, но можно было бы и интереснее.

Quá nặng nề và bức bối. Không phải từ bi kịch của một tình yêu, mà là từ những thứ rất không liên quan, mà thông qua biệt tài "tả cảnh ngụ tình" của tác giả ta vẫn thấy chúng rất không liên quan, vàng bạc trân châu mỹ kí kim sa hột lựu, hoa lá cành đủ cả. À, còn có cả thân thể tuyệt mỹ và trí tuệ tuyệt đỉnh của hai nhân vật chánh. Hiếm có một cuốn chuyện tình mỏng manh nào mà lại tạo cho tôi cảm giác tình yêu bị bức tử dưới sức nặng của những thứ rất hữu hình như thế này.

«Суламифь» романтизирует множество идей, с которыми я категорически не согласна - от “настоящей” любви между 13 девочки и стариком до идолизации Соломона. Верить в искренность чувств персонажей невозможно, а все их взаимодействия, по-моему, сухи и не содержательны. К сожалению, я не сильна в истории религии Южного Востока, и, возможно, самые стоящие отрывки книги, были мне непонятны.

Solomon theo như trong truyện là một vị vua vĩ đại, anh minh, và một "tay chơi tình ái" chính hiệu. Kinh qua bao chuyện ái tình mỹ nữ nhưng ngài lại bị hớp hồn bởi một cô thiếu nữ. Sulamif chiếm hết trái tim của vị vua ngàn năm có một cũng rất dễ hiểu, vì không giống như những nữ nhân từng đi qua đời Solomon, nàng thuần khiết, trong trắng và chỉ biết đến tình yêu. Nàng không mong cầu chinh phục nhà vua hay vụ lợi bất kỳ điều gì, nàng chỉ mong cùng người mình yêu sống trọn đời trọn kiếp.
Solomon được ca tụng lên một tầm cao ngất, nhưng thông qua một vài chi tiết, ta thấy rõ ngài vẫn còn vài thiếu sót trong cuộc đời trị vì của mình.
Tất nhiên mình không ưa vị vua này vì mình là một con người thế kỷ 21, mình có những tiêu chuẩn đánh giá riêng, đặc biệt là khoản gái gú của ông vua. Nhiều pha "chơi chán rồi bỏ" đúng nghĩa đen. Và uy nghiêm đến mức nhìn cái người ta răm rắp nghe theo (nó cứ vô lý kịch nghệ kiểu gì haha). Tuy nhiên, nếu chỉ để xét trong truyện, Solomon có khá nhiều điểm cấp tiến trong suy nghĩ và tư tưởng, ví dụ không tế trẻ con, mình cũng khá ưng chỗ đó.
Bản dịch có một vài lỗi chính tả biên tập, phải chi phiên âm quốc tế sẽ tốt hơn. Quyển này không bằng một góc Chiếc vòng thạch lựu và Olexia của cùng tác giả, trong đó nhân vật nam chính đỡ "sảng", đỡ dâm, đỡ tự cao hơn rất nhiều. Chỉ trong thời tác giả mới viết được kiểu này chứ mình khá chắc cuốn Sulamif mà ra sau năm 2000 thôi mình đảm bảo tác giả ăn đá chọi xây được nhà luôn.

Cá nhân mình thấy câu chuyện tình của nhà vua - nhà thơ, nhà thông thái - cũng tầm thường như mấy mớ ngôn tình ba xu nhan nhản ngoài chợ. Sulamif kể về những con người dâm đãng và những vị thần dâm đãng và những cuộc truy hoan phóng túng và những vị chúa trào phúng bằng những ngôn từ hoa mỹ.
Tuy nhiên may mắn là truyện không chỉ có vậy.
Truyện cũng kể về các điển tích của vua Solomon nhân từ, người rải những đồng vàng lên sành của người đàn bà nghèo khổ và trừng phạt tên trộm tham lam. Người trao gia tài của người cha cho người con xứng đáng và trao cây cung và cây kiếm cho kẻ có trái tim sắt đá. Mình yêu thích những câu truyện nho nhỏ này và những bài học về những viên đá quý, nên có lẽ (đối với mình), Sulamif nhìn chung tuy không phải một câu chuyện tình hay nhưng vẫn là một câu truyện đáng để kể.

Một câu chuyện dễ đoán kết quả. Thật thì phải thừa nhận vua Solomon khoẻ như Càng Long của Trung Quốc. Thiệt sự thì là F*** Boy chính hiệu. Từ đầu đến cuối ngài toàn khoe hậu cung cả ngàn phi tần. Và song song bên cạnh đó ngài lại có thú vui review. Đầu truyện thì Review nữ giới, giữa truyện thì review đá. Chuyện mình cho 3.6 sao.

Впервые читал её ещё в школе и был полностью очарован.
Теперь, после Песни песней и стольких опытов, того очарования, конечно, не вернуть. Но где-то в душе оно просыпается, светло греет, светло плачет — живёт. Пусть даже это всего лишь обманка, что в 16 лет трава была зеленее, но для меня это очарование живо.
И это прочтение, даст бог, не последнее.
Теперь, после Песни песней и стольких опытов, того очарования, конечно, не вернуть. Но где-то в душе оно просыпается, светло греет, светло плачет — живёт. Пусть даже это всего лишь обманка, что в 16 лет трава была зеленее, но для меня это очарование живо.

Перечитала Суламифь. Не поняла чем мне этот рассказ так запомнился (читала впервые лет в 15-16), потому что ничего интересного я в нем не нашла.

Читатель понимает — нужно не только видеть рассказанное автором, но и не забывать обо всём остальном, что могло крыться между строк. Впрочем, автор мог думать на иные темы. Он даже удивится, узнав о существовании точек зрения, противоположных его собственной. Для большинства читателей «Суламифь» останется историей о любви, каковой она изначально и является. Но почему всё сложилось именно так? Зачем Куприн говорит о жертвенности действующих лиц, готовых расстаться с жизнью ради своих убеждений? И ведь все они поступают согласно любовным порывам: кто от любви к царю, а кто от любви к оппозиционным силам. Все любят и идут на жертвы.

Krátke dielo, ktoré máte za chvíľu prečítané, a ktoré vďaka svojej veľkosti ľahko schováte aj do vrecka a môžete ho tak vziať so sebou naozaj kamkoľvek.
Úprimne, nebol to najlepší román aký som kedy čítala, ale rozhodne stál za prečítanie a som rada, že som sa k nemu dostala. Najviac ma zaujali kapitoly, kde sa rozprávalo o tom, čo a odkiaľ kráľ Šalamún do svojej krajiny dovážal a ako spravodlivo a múdro dokázal rozhodovať, keď za ním ľudia prichádzali, aby vyriešil ich problémy a spory. Ako v každom románe, ani v tomto nechýbal príbeh lásky popretkávaný intrigami a žiarlivosťou. Vrelo odporúčam.

The setup is based on the Biblical Song of Songs. For a while, it comes off mainly as a more expansive and more lavishly poetical adaptation of the original. But it eventually veers off in original direction. It’s an intriguing balance between maintaining a connection with the original but offering something distinct enough to stand as a distinct work. I didn’t necessarily love it, but I do admire Kuprin’s adventurousness and his having pulled it off.
