This is a wonderful book for opening discussions about multiple important social issues. I'd like to see every school utilize this resource to improve our country and the world. This book is a powerful resource for positive change!
The brilliance of this books is that it's crafted as a learning journey for young readers and adults alike. Each entry in the ABCs of privilege carries a QR code that is a portal into a deep rabbit hole of further reading for all levels of reader, which provides adults with a generous library of texts to support not only their own journeys but also those of the young ones whose journeys they are entrusted with guiding.
This little book presents big questions to current social issues we all face. The book follows an ABC format, providing at least 26 main topics for discussion. Topics can be discussed with young and old alike. The authors also provide abundant resources for those who wish to go deeper. I personally like the fact that the illustrations throughout the book are vague, allowing the audience to imagine people they may know, or not know, struggling with the issues presented on each page. While the authors present some basic facts, the content is creatively designed to present a platform and questions for discussion, wonder, and awareness. Open the book, wonder together, listen to life from another perspective and begin to wonder, really wonder, what privilege is. May we all become kinder, more compassionate, and supportive of individuals from all walks of life.
This is an informational book that uses alphabetical order to present information about privilege that is child-friendly. These topics are presented simply using real-world examples that children can understand. There are also resources throughout which use QR codes linked to the organizations website, which students can use to explore these topics further. The website has activities that children can do with adults to use their new knowledge to expand their worldview. There are also illustrations that make the discussions relatable to children, specifically by featuring images of children in these scenarios.
I gave this book 5 stars because it takes a complex topic and makes it simple to introduce to children. It is also helpful for anyone who simply isn't informed about the topic of privilege, even adults. It can be used to discuss anything from disabilities to racial equality. I love the idea of using this is social studies curriculum, especially when current events are being discussed.
