Welcome to Starry Hollow, where spells were made to be broken.
Misfortunes never come alone.
When a valuable jewel goes missing, former newspaper reporter Ember Rose is hired to track it down. She quickly learns that the jewel wasn’t hidden away for its monetary worth but for safety because the jewel has the power to bring misfortune to its possessor. When the negative consequences start piling up, throwing one obstacle after another in her way, Ember turns to magic to find the jewel before it can wreak havoc on the entire town of Starry Hollow.
Will Ember locate the jewel in time or will the wheel of misfortune roll through town and crush the hopes and dreams of everyone she holds dear—including her own?
Magic & Misfortune is the fourteenth book in the Starry Hollow Witches humorous paranormal cozy mystery series.

Book 11 in the Starry Hollow series is a satisfying emotional journey. Ember and her antics are always a great escape, but this book took the series to the next level. Annabel Chase has created a fabulous world full of magic and angst, with truly likeable characters that are anything but static or one dimensional. The characters and their relationships feel authentic and real. You'll laugh and maybe cry, you'll definitely be touched. The series just keeps getting more interesting and I am so looking forward to the next installment.
Ember is one of my favorite heroines and she shines in this book as she deals with the repercussions of standing up to her childishly determined Great Aunt , as well as the heartache of having left a love that wasn’t right for her, and having turned away from one who perhaps was. All this and a fantastic mystery as Ember attempts to locate a missing ring, gradually learning what that ring actually is and the great cost it may have on those who hold it.
great storytelling and memorable characters. Love this!
Rating: 4.75⭐️
This was a really terrific story, a more emotional one, using the missing ring to move Ember’s narrative forward through this harrowing time in her life.
Aunt Hyacinth is still using Ember’s decision to make Ember and Marley’s life miserable, as Hyacinth’s vendetta against her continues. Now jobless, Ember turns to becoming her own boss and starts a private investigator business with Raoul. And the missing ring investigation becomes a case of theirs.
Ember’s breakup with Alec, who fired her, sees her reconnecting with Granger, but as friends, as she tries to find her way through her romantic relationships.
It’s multiple threads but all will eventually have a common theme and emotional connection. It takes time and some wonderful moments but Chase never fails to amaze me with how thoughtfully and consistently these stories pull together. And how Ember and her found family grows stronger and develops deeper than when they start.
It sends me happily through to the next book and stage in the series.
Ember’s life is magically transforming as is Marley’s. The Rose family itself is undergoing a new phase. It makes for great storytelling and memorable characters. Love this!

A most entertaining supernatural cozy mystery series
This is one of the most entertaining supernatural series in the cozy mystery genre out there. A great cast of characters and a fun and entertaining storyline. Amber Rose a young woman who grew up in New Jersey had a child at the age of 18 lost her husband shortly there after and was living a dismal life as a repo person. Until one day she got in a bit of trouble with a car owner that she was trying to repossess his car and something happened. There’s something that happened was she at this point became so scared that unknown magic kicked in and saved her. This alerted her family members in the supernatural world of her existence and location. Soon after her cousins came to rescue her and her daughter and bring her back to the supernatural world. Once there she begins learning how do use her magic as well as get to know her family that she did not know anything about. As time goes on her aunt and her cousins and other friends she meets in the supernatural world. Her aunt gives her a job at her newspaper in the small town and Amber begins her new career. In the process she ends up solving mysteries crimes and murders around the small supernatural town. She helps the local sheriff and with the help of her friends family and others south other mysteries and continues to learn more magic. Read on and be entertained from beginning to end.
This is the 14th book in the series and it's really good! The characters are getting more depth and Ember Rose is growing exponentially with her magic and with her self-understanding. Ember lost her job because her Aunt Hyacinth is furious that Ember won't give her the magic from the family book that belongs to Ember. Ember and her familiar, Raoul (a raccoon) have started a PI business.
Their first client wants her to track down a valuable jewel that has gone missing. But, the jewel isn't valuable for its monetary wealth but for safety because the jewel has the power to bring misfortune to its possessor. Ember starts interviewing the people who attended the family party where the jewel went missing. Meanwhile, negative things start happening so Ember has to use magic to find the jewel before more damage is done to the entire town.
Great story and a good mystery that wasn't easy to figure out.
I really enjoyed this book. Picking up where the last book left off it starts with Ember in the middle of the "war" with her aunt and post break-up with Alec. Unemployed, she's decided to start her own detective agency with her trusty racoon Raul by her side.
Because these are mysteries, the big mystery in this one is who stole the ring. A family heirloom that was given as an engagement ring and stolen at the big family dinner celebrating the event at a restaurant the family booked exclusively for the evening. Ember accepts the case and begins her sleuthing.
With her trusty familiar, daughter Marley, her ancient dog P3, cousins and friends she moves forward with her life. Along the way she rediscovers feelings for Granger but doesn't make any decisions or take any steps. Ms. Chase seems to be saving that for the next book.
Ember is branching out on her own and really taking on some new challenges by opening her own PI business with Raoul (who is, as usual, quite funny). Her first case is a search for a missing family heirloom, which turns out to have a much greater impact than just family drama when its backstory and magical effects on Starry Hollow begin to become clear. There were also some fun touches, like Ember working with her cousin on a project and some allusions to Granger that might hint to something happening in the future....
Ben and Lyndsey's engagement party ends with the engagement ring missing. It's a special ring, Nanny Berta's first engagement ring, and it's taken Ben a long time to persuade Nanny to let him have it.
Turns out there's a reason why and it's only her slipping memory that forgot the danger.. it's the Ring of Despair and it won't just affect Ben and Lyndsey's life but everyone around them.
Embers first detective job is to find the ring.. and then she's got to find new premises as Aunt Hyacinth tries to shut her down from working from home.
Ember seemed a little less childish and and snarky this time around, but that's mostly because she is no longer getting the lessons that so irritated her. I'm glad she is finally broken away from the vampire and hope she and Sheriff Nash can find their way back to each other. I just hope there's some way for Hyacinth and Ember to forge a truce. The mystery itself was kind of ho hum, but I always like it when the writers of cozies have the mystery be something other than a murder.
Ember Rose, P.I., has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? Speaking of rings, Ember needs to find one that was stolen from her first client’s fiancée. What they don’t know is how important it is that she find that ring, and fast! The fate of all of Starry Hollow depends on it! Buy the book and find out why.
Note to Annabel Chase: if Ember doesn’t marry Granger, I’m going to file a Rule 11 on you! 😂
I'm enjoying my visits to Starry Hollow! I love the way Ember and Marley are evolving, Aster is coming into her own, and even Florian is showing potential; Hyacinth is exactly as expected, unfortunately. The relationships are evolving as well and likely to prove both surprising and interesting. The mystery is intriguing, and the magical aspects are presented well. I'm eager for Book 15!
Ember is picking up the pieces of her life and moving forward as a private investigator. Her first case is the missing engagement ring, that was stolen during the engagement party. Turns out there's more to the ring than any one knows, until havoc is unleashed on Starry Hollow. Its up to Ember to follow the clues and expose the thief.
Embers new case has very unfortunate events happening
Ember is hired to find a missing family heirloom, a ring. The ring is said to bring true love but in reality it brings despair. As she prepares to find the ring she is faced with her own feelings about the sheriff and her life in general.
Fascinating story and mystery, filled with plenty of excitement, surprises, suspense, danger, fantasy and lots of love. Doing the right thing even when you don't liklike it. I would recommend this to everyone who enjoys a unique and different story and mystery.
None of these books would make me laugh that much if Raoul weren’t there to do his show. Love that raccoon!!
The investigation was gripping and fun to follow, with nice life lessons to take from some of it. Although I could do with less Alec (or no Alec at all) and more Granger.
Book 14 has a missing ring causing all kinds of chaos and misery. Ember is starting her new beginnings and Marley is handling her own school problems. And the evil Aunt is still spreading nasty rumors. There is some humor, loads of angst and emotions, no murders, mystery, and one scene brought tears to my eyes. Highly entertaining.
Magic& Misfortune Starry Hollow Witches by Annabel Chase #14
Ember is truly growing into the person she should be. She stands up for herself and protects/raises her daughter. She loves her family as well as the town and the people who there. I think she realizes her father knew it was better for him to take her away. Continue reading I'm sure you'll enjoy the next book.
I really Ember becoming independent and starting her own business. I would love to see her branch out, practice magic on her own, and get a new circle of friends. Give herself another chance at love.
I loved her confrontation with Hyacinthe. It's things she needed to say, and they both needed to hear. I doubt it will make a difference in the long term, but at times, you need to speak your truth.
Fun addition to Ember’s story. She is trying to establish her new business, deal with her personal life and stand up to her aunt. The plot and subplots move quickly, making it hard to put the book down. I can’t wait for the next book!
I’m so utterly enamoured with this paranormal cozy series and all it’s interesting characters. I never get bored reading these books. Can’t believe we’re on number 14 already.
I love each book and I hate when I’m finished. Ember is a wonderful character and definitely relatable. There were a lot of funny moments, a great mystery and maybe finally, the romance we’ve all been waiting for!!!!
In a heartwarming volume in the series, Ember begins to face the possibility of love again while maintaining her strength, opening a new business, and solving a most complex and dangerous mystery.
Wow this series of yours are amazing as was your Spellbound series your characters, humor, mystery and story line are fantastic and I am really looking forward to your next book.
I love this series and it’s characters. The storylines are always interesting and I look forward to reading the books when they come out. This book did not disappoint.
I really liked this story and can't wait for the next one in the series to come out! This one was filled with magic and mystery, witches and familiars, and love - both real and lost.
What an enjoyable read again! I so love this series! It is one of my favorite from the author Annabel Chase! I can’t wait for the next one! Will have to wait till February 2021 😱 But it’s totally worth the wait! ☺️
I have been having a great time following The adventures of ember and her family I love the twists and turns in the little subtle jokes it has been a wonderful series to read
Ember Rose is growing up and embracing her magic. Her aunt still wants the power and magic, and is going out of her way to make life difficult for Ember Rose. Wonderful story, great characters, I want more please. Read and enjoy!
I love this series by this author. The characters are interesting and very attention grabbing. Who doesn't love a little mystery along with a long story with difficult family members.
I like the series, but I felt this book missed something. Usually Embers emotional troubles and blunders are the secondary part to the story, in this instance it was more of the main story. The whole concept of the Ring was bland.
That so many of the colorful characters of Starry Hollow barely had any presence. It almost seemed as if the author was trying to incorporate so many of them, but didn’t give any the time they deserved either. One in particular was Artemis. She is a brilliant character and the whole reason to include her in this story seemed superfluous. That and maybe she was only used to bring in the Castor character as a potential suitor. It’s was poorly done.
Another bad example was the birthday party and all the coven mentors seeking Ember out, but none of the conversation or interaction had much depth. Everything seemed surface oriented only.
This entire book could have been handled within a few short chapters and more time giving to more items that had substance.
