Lessons is a collection of vulnerable, tender and relatable notes on early motherhood. A touchingly candid account of a mother's first years with her child. It captures the gradual and often uneasy adjustment of our maternal identity. Karen McMillan speaks the secrets of first-time motherhood in this poignant and affirming read for first-time mums everywhere.
I read this in a couple of days, after having come across the author’s ‘Mother Truths’ poetry collection and absolutely loving it.
I really enjoyed this too - a relatable, searingly honest and insightful series of reflections on early motherhood - and the writing is excellent.
I have to say I did slightly prefer the poetry collection, and that will be the one I’ll be gifting to friends - though I still think this is a collection of writings that I’ll find myself dipping in and out of as I get to similar stages of being a mum myself.
Read this at night while my 7.5 mo baby slept on my tummy. It brought tears to my eyes as I realised how swiftly it is that time flies. And it gave me so much comfort knowing that I'm definitely not the only one with all those mothering obsessions and that they don't mean that I am doing a bad job. I finished it vowing to do my best to make the most of these moments and try to enjoy them rather than get swept away with the obsessions and the 'should-do's.
