Where U.S. Marshals failed, can farm boy Carson succeed?
After the Civil War, to the people of Oak Bower, Arkansas, “…he'd always be Carson Kettle, son of the man who'd chosen the winning side in the war and would forever pay for it.”
Folks in town all called both him and his father ‘Yankee Lover.’ All but her, and she’s gone.
Only sixteen, and untrained and untried in the ways of Colts and fists and evil gunmen, Carson’s determined to ride into the Indian Territories and bring Lijah Penne to justice. But Lijah’s feared by all, and even the best deputy United States marshal can’t find him.
Can youth and determination overcome an experienced outlaw, forged in the crucible of the Civil War to kill man, woman, or child, without a second thought?
No one thinks so. They say: leave it to the grownups, you’re too young, too inexperienced.
And maybe they’re right, but they don’t feel what Carson feels, and he saddles up anyway…
Fast moving story with a young dynamic character to ride the river with! He's green around the gills but a determined cuss who doesn't quit or back down. Tension comes to the reader through watching him traipse blindly into obvious trouble or get bamboozled too many times. But these faults make for a good character arc and lay a foundation for what's to come in Cochrane's new series. I'll be reading more of "Kettle" in the coming weeks. PKB
Excellent story of a young man maturing too fast out of necessity
Growing up hard by a quiet father who barely goes to town, only to find things are not as they seem. Losing love twice, losing other's from his town, and being only 16 and after a killer change his path forever. Highly recommended for all adult readers.
This was a good, action-packed Western. Carson Kettle comes into himself as the result of tragedy. He also makes discoveries that build a new respect for someone he had been rather ashamed of before.
It must also be said that this book had a strong copy editor. I look forward to reading the next installment in the series.
The tale has the young Carson growing up fast as he seeks justice for the victims of a robbery. Unexpected come to his strength of character, and assist him in his journey. Highly enjoyable read kept me turning the pages till the conclusion. Looking forward to the next in the series.
First time for reading this author. Liked the characters. The action is good, and I am glad Carson survived. Hope he finds a loving wife to heal his heart, so he can have a happy life.
I was looking for a new western based series to dive into and I think I hit the jackpot with the "Carson Kettle" series. I raced right through Book 1 and starting Book 2 right now!
Of or whatever the reason,I have read all 5 of the Kettle books but not in order, and have the 6th ordered. Every book have been great reads, and so will, tonight buy another of Wyatt's stories. Great writer, great stories! Dave Cochran
Carson being only sixteen hated riding a sway back older horse to town to pick up supplies for his mom. While there his whole life changed. Taking after the outlaws that had robbed the bank and killed a dear friend and the banker. Looking forward to the next book.
16 almost 17 and luck was all on his side. Granted he was very mature and savvy. He had lots of smarts but you need luck to if you are going to catch that many crooks and survive. Anxious to see what he can do as he grows up.
Somebody tell me toward the end of story, nothing was written about the 8 riders(Jake Penne gamg) that mysteriously wound up dead. Then Carson is handed his rifle and specs.
This was a refreshing good book, void of sex but not love. A young man's heart is broken and nothing stands in his way as he seeks retribution. I am looking forward to book two and the next adventure.
