"When a person has full Cups, they feel good and have a strong sense of fulfilment. When their Cups are emptying, a person feels unease and is driven to choose behaviours that will fill those Cups."- Sandi Phoenix

The Phoenix Cups: A Cup filling story, is a theoretical framework delivered through an endearing tale that will enrich your relationships and increase your wellbeing.

Frank desperately wants to reconnect with his estranged daughter before his time is over. Danielle is dealing with the loss of her husband and hasn't stepped outside of her bookstore in years. Discover your personal needs for fulfilment; because you can't pour from an empty Cup.

During the latest bookclub at Evolve Wellbeing, we read The Phoenix cups. I really enjoyed it and had so many aha moments along the way. After some reflection, I noticed a part of my journey come together using the ‘cups’ metaphor…..

Going back a few years ago, all of my cups felt empty. It took me about 1 year to be able to start filling my cups, however, I can say that during this ‘season’ of my life, I have gained a deeper understanding of myself and other people, and have been able to recognise on why they started to drain.

So, how did I fill my cups?
Freedom – Writing, Journaling and making choices that align with my values aka cups that need filling
Connection – Nurturing meaningful relationships and friendships, going to book club, and dancing
Fun – Taking fun seriously and booking it in has created so much joy
Safety – Creating the space I needed to look after my Mental Health.
Mastery – Developing skills for growth, including doing things outside of my comfort zone.

Looking back, there were some things I could not control, and things I could have controlled – however I didn’t have the capacity at the time. Since acknowledging my need and doing a lot of hard work on filling up my cups – that journey in my life is not my story, but a season.

My ‘will to fill’ and my ‘skill to fill’ has improved immensely. I feel I have come out the other side with more awareness and clarity in what I want in my next season  Of course, future life events and circumstances may change the way I fill my cups… however, for now, the journey of refilling these cups has given me a voice and greater self-worth.

The cups metaphor really put a lot of things in perspective! Great book, great framework!🤩

Everyone needs to read this book.
It will increase your ability to understand all relationships in your life on a deeper level. As a teacher, it will enhance your practice. If you are studying education, this is the most important reading you will do as a foundation for all future exposure to understanding 'behaviour' .
