Romans: Encountering the Gospel's Power

Rate this book
The gospel has power. The power to save us. The power to change the world. In Paul's letter to the Romans we find the power we need to be effective witnesses, to overcome sin, to be wholly committed to God, to handle differences in Christ's body, to understand God's view of homosexuality and to be responsible Christian citizens. Studying Romans transforms our thinking and convicts our hearts as we discover the freshness of the gospel for our lives.

Did this for a bible study. Having just come off of a John MacArthur study previous to this one, I could not help but compare their styles. Personally, I preferred MacArthur. That said, there was certainly nothing wrong with this in-depth look at Romans by Stott.

After 6 months, my first D group is over. I might've thought more of this if the pace had been faster. I appreciate Stott's commentary, but I'd still go John Piper or Matt Chandler over him.

This was one of the best studies I've done. We've been in Romans since September and I've loved every moment. So powerful!

Good, in-depth study on Romans. Stotts language nor thinking is outdated. I recommend picking up his companion book if you are going to lead a study. Keep in mind that Stott does have Calvinistic tendencies in his thinking, but they are not overtly prevalent, and should not distract from the teaching.

The book breaks down the book of Romans in a very simple but logical way. John Stott asks some basic questions (but ones that are still worth asking), some not-so-straight-forward questions, and also offers good insights or stories/analogy from famous theologians. I would absolutely check out his other Bible studies book, too. Good for individual (and I believe small group) studies.

Not my favorite Bible study. I disagreed theologically with some of his commentary too. I personally wouldn't jump right into another one of his studies again, but know that I've got another one coming up in a few months through my church. I'll do my best to have a renewed attitude about it.

This was a solid study for my discipleship group to work through over the last several months. While I don't think it's the best Bible study I've ever done, it provided a good foundation for us to build on in discussion.
