A sad but fascinating read...

A Savage Flower by Judith Weinstock is based on true events. The author weaves a fascinating yet chilling story set against the backdrop of a religious cult in a remote village in Latin America similar to that of Jim Jones of the Peoples Temple which left more than 900 dead and came to be known as the Jonestown Massacre (November 18, 1978). The author writes an exceptionally well-written book and paints for the reader an all-encompassing human dramatization of love and loss and the path of destruction that religious cults leave in their wake. It’s a very vivid and compelling story that will have you turning the pages from the opening chapter. Highly recommended. I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

‘We’re not from here. We’re from there. We’re not zombies.’

Israeli author Judith Weinstock earned her degree in Education and Educational Administration and served in those capacities under the Israeli Ministry of Education. Now retired, she is embracing her passion for writing. Her third book, A SAVAGE FLOWER, has been translated from the Hebrew by Maya Thomas.

Judith opens her novel with a frightening series of observations by Dita, notions that suggest a zombie farm, an inescapable place that seems to be a part of fear – a recognition of aging so well written that the character becomes visual! We learn then that this is the mother of Dana, the focal character of the story, and that strange atmosphere establishes the mood of this eerie novel. According to the author the novel is based on a true story…

We live in a strange time: cults have always existed but now they even influence politics. Judith uses that immediacy to enhance the credibility of her strange story, but the cult she describes is more like the Kool-Aid tragedy better known as the 1978 Jonestown Massacre led by the infamous Jim Jones. Incorporating the cult concept in a psychological study of family dissemination vs. disintegration makes for a mesmerizing, though frightening, read.

The story, as related by the mother figure Dita, follows as condensed: ‘Dana Naveh has always been the perfect daughter – intelligent, studious, and ambitious from a young age. She is loved by her parents, and has a family of her own with her husband and sweet daughter. Her life has progressed easily along the safe path to bourgeoisie. But then, without warning, everything changes. One day, she confronts her parents with a difficult and fateful reality – she and her husband have decided to bind their fates to the mysterious David, a cult leader who draws them to the remote village he has founded in Latin America. Dana and her husband relinquish all ties with their former life. From the moment Dana disengages, the lives of the Naveh family will not be the same again. Everything they once believed in has collapsed, and they are forced to face a new and frightening reality. Far away, among the savage flowers, Dana slowly begins to see that David’s promises are far from reality. Would it be too late for her to find her way back?’

The at times halting manner of writing actually enhances the impact of this story. Judith Weinstock successfully captures close attention as she unravels this mystery. This is a very promising introduction for an author who at last has elected to present her books in English for a larger audience.

This book had a lot of potential, but it fell a little short for me. First of all, the writing style was difficult to read with a lot of choppy non sentences. Some paragraphs were just sentences of one word. After a while, I (mostly) got used to this and found it easier to read.

This was a story about family and how they had grown apart until things brought them back together (for the most part). There was a lot of introspection on the part of some of the characters about how they were dealing with aging and conflict within the family.

Dana, her husband and daughter join a cult and follow a man calling himself King David to South America. Once there, Dana realizes that this is not the idyllic life that she was led to believe. Instead, her life becomes one of rape and separation from her young daughter, Orr. (The rapes are implied and not described in detail.)

Meanwhile, her family back in Israel tries to figure out a way to rescue Dana from her predicament. Her sister, Hila, becomes the main one trying to help in spite of her past rebellion against her family.

The author has obviously done research on cults, especially the People's Temple/Jim Jones. The cult in this book reminded me a lot of that situation as well as several others I have heard about, like Heaven's Gate. She tries to depict the charisma of the cult leader and why people would blindly follow him.

My main issue with the book is that I didn't really care about any of the characters. They were not well-developed enough for me to feel invested in their lives. Most of them came off as one-dimensional and shallow. All in all, not a bad book, but I think it could have been much better.

Savage Flower

Umm, shocked into totally utter silence. What a gripping psychological thriller slash adventure. I like it, but in some places I really did have to back track and figure out wtf I read a few times. Other times, I was trying not to cry for the mother, Dana and her precious child Orr. The horrors that are collected in this book are not for the faint of heart. It's a psychological thriller like I said in the beginning.
Dana thought she had it all. A great guy, a good family when they don't get up in her business and a doctoring degree. Then they find David... King David. She should of known, should of suspected. But nothing will prepare her and her family for the horrors she is about to witness and hear.

I was disappointed

I love stories about complex family situations and cults. This book seemed to skate over all the dynamics of the story and I felt like I couldn’t get drawn into what was happening. I do the author’s wording style and structure so I hope she learns to develop stories better and make the characters and situations more engaging.

Meh...not really my cuppa. While I have read and enjoyed similar books with similar storylines this one didn’t capture my attention. I feel like the author told the story rather than showed the story. I also felt like she needed to flesh out the characters more. I am not sure I would pick up another book by this author or not. I think that others may enjoy it more than I did but I can’t rate it any higher than I have. There was something missing and something lacking. There were some good parts to teh story though...I just didn’t enjoy it much at all.
