(audiobook+ebook) With this book, surfing is finally at the center of the story, and though I know nothing about this sport, it was quite endearing. Mostly because both characters practice, and they aren’t competing against each other.
It was actually the main reason why Peal and Declan got acquainted. They admired each other’s technique. They even worked together. And they supported each other, as they both struggled with their art. Declan had fled Hawaii after his friend’s death–and his affair with the deceased’s ex-girlfriend–and dreaded coming back to the islands for a competition right where his Eddie had died. Daughter of a famous female surfer, Pearl wanted to have the same influence on girls and women–a nice feminist message–but needed Declan’s fame to get some coverage. They needed each other, but more than that, they connected with each other–shared a passion for surfing and a love for Hawaii.
I loved how the attraction was like a by-product of their admiration for each other. Like they desired the body that could make such beautiful and powerful figures on the waves. The feelings they developped came from them learning more about each other, from discovering the person behind the athlete. I thought they had quite a mature relationship, and the petty drama came from outside, from the villain in the story, Declan’s ruthless agent.
I won’t say much about it, because it’s better to read it, but the third act was a thing of beauty. All the fears and struggles and hang-ups were resolved in a few chapters taking place during the Duke Kahanamoku contest. Fun and full of emotions, I really enjoyed that ending.
I wasn’t a fan of the male narrator. He did the job, but I couldn’t connect with Declan through his voice. The female narrator, though, was great. Between the way she conveyed Pearl’s feelings and her little lilt for her, I loved her work here.
Quickie
- Series: Aloha #2 (can be read as a standalone) - Hashtags: #retro romance #fake relationship #multicultural romance #hawaii - Triggers: past death, recovering alcoholism - Main couple: Pearl Sunn & Declan Bishop - Hotness: 4/5 - Romance: 4/5 - + the feminist message - – Declan’s agent is such an asshole
Brashear provides a fresh perspective on a crazy little thing called love. Try Me dishes up some spice while taking full aim at the heart. Declan and Pearl are the right people who found their perfect fit at the wrong time. He's a dreamer. She's a realist. Both have big plans for their future, but never would either have guessed that those plans would include each other. Flirty makes a splash with an unforgettable, heartbreaker of a read.
Declan appears to be on top of the world as he is a sexy, successful single surfer but appearances can be deceiving. He also has a smile on his face, but it hides the pain of the past that he refuses anyone to see.
All Pearl wants to do is follow in her mother’s footsteps and surf. Pretending to be Declan’s girlfriend is a win-win for both of them but are they fooling everyone else or themselves?
Declan is battling the guilt and regrets of his past and Pearl is exactly who he needs in his life to show him that one event doesn’t define him. There is no denying the chemistry between them but their feelings for each other transcend far beyond the physical.
This was my first book by this author and I read this as a standalone with no problem. Hello Hawaii who doesn't love a tropical set with two hot people falling in love. Declan has the party animal persona but he isn't truly like that at all. He is the exact opposite and is in one hell of a slump. When he meets Pearl its like his whole world lights up. Being a woman in a male dominated sport is not all its cracked up to be but she is determined to do it all own her own. These two are hot together and there bond will draw you right in.
This book is the first that I've read by this author and I didn't know what to expect. This book is part of a series Aloha Series but can also be read as a stand-alone.
Book #1 = Try Easy. Book #2 = Try Me.
This book is set in the 1960's and is set in Hawaii. This is a love story with sports romance mixed in the romance side. Declan is a very hot and sexy man and is known for being a complete party animal but its all pretend, its all for show. Declan is in quite a slump and has given up on life and his own happy ending, he's given up on happiness. That is until he meets Pearl. Her smile alone has woke him up. Pearl loves to surf and has big dreams, dreams of her own that she wants to fulfil on her own merit, but as she is learning being a woman in as male dominated world puts you down a peg to begin with and makes it even more difficult. Pearl cant pass up on any opportunities so when one falls to her she thinks that it will be fine, no problem what could go wrong. The problem is she is pretending, she's fake dating only its starting to feel very real. However fate has other ideas. Will fate change there lives for ever? ( NO SPOLIERS).
The chemistry between these two is very hot and sexy, they both get more than they bargained for completely. I really enjoyed reading this book and I will definitely go back and read book one because I really liked this author writing style. I really enjoyed the story line and how the author dealt with the issues and also watching if fate would step in for these two characters. I would not normally read a book set so far back but I enjoyed this book and how this author has written it.
Thank you to the author and the publishers for allowing me to read an early copy of this book.
ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.
This book is expected to be released on 12th March 2020
While part of a series, the way Brashear has written these this absolutely stands on its own and could be listened to out of order. While Declan makes a small appearance in book 1 and Keoni appears briefly in this one - there are no spoilers in either direction and events occur somewhat concurrently.
Oh my gosh - I loved this. From their meeting Declan & Pearl were perfect for each other. They’re both really interesting characters. Declan is the “bad boy” of surfing who isn’t as bad as the media and his manager make him out to be. A recovering alcoholic struggling with his success in a sport that took the life of a good friend. Pearl is trying to succeed in a male-dominated sport as well as live up to the legend of her mother.
While their love of surfing brings them together and they have amazing chemistry - the fact that they each get to really know the other is what made this so enjoyable to me. There’s a little forced proximity (one of my favorite tropes) when they’re stranded together for a few days. It’s more than the weather that steams up! When they return, they struggle to find how they fit together in “the real world”. This had all the emotions.
I again enjoyed Brashear’s descriptions of Hawaii and surfing. I felt fully immersed in the sport that I’m not that familiar with.
Narration: I thought Kai Rubio and Emily Woo Zeller were the perfect fit for Declan and Pearl. Both did a wonderful job bringing all the characters to life. Flawless narration that made this so easy to listen to.
Many thanks to Home Cooked Books for the review copy of this audiobook.
Declan looks to be all put together, but no one is looking below the surface to see he has some serious past baggage. Pearl is a girl who is trying to make it in the male dominated sport of surfing. When they come across each other, they decide on a fake relationship which should benefit them both. As they spend time together, Pearl actually sees past the surface, so she starts to help him heal from those past scars, and it's not too long before real feelings are caught. They have amazing chemistry, but it's more than just that to be honest, and I don't want to tell all, so you know. I will say this, Jill Brashear is a descriptive genius as I truly felt like I was there watching all the surface in Hawaii, and I really didn't want to leave this world except that whole 1960's thing since that time wasn't all that great towards women. Now it's time for everyone to decide for themselves by hitting that one click button! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
Try Me is book 2 in a series, but can be read as a standalone. It's a sports/fake relationship romance set in Hawaii in the 1960s.
Declan is an amazing surfer, with a reputation as a hard partier. He's lost is love for life and is losing hope of getting it back. But when he meet Pearl, he's so intrigued by her. She has huge dreams of making it big in surfing, a male-dominated sport in that time period. She's learned that you can't give up an opportunity, and when the chance to "date" Declan comes up, she takes it.
But even though they're faking, they're drawn to each other. Their chemistry is amazing, and they give each other what the need. Pearl motivates and renews Declan's spirit.
This was my first book by Jill Brashear, and I really enjoyed her writing style. It's smart, sharp and addicting. I'll definitely read more by Jill Brashear.
Try Me is book 2 in the Aloha series and is a stand alone. That being said why not read the series as a whole to get the full Hawaiian experience. I loved this one. You get sexy surfer Declan and Pearl. Declan is head home for a surf competition and is hunted by his past. Pearl is looking to break out as a female surfer. You can't deny the chemistry between Pearl and Declan as they grow from fake to a real relationship. They have this bond that you will love and feel how Pearl helps Declan heal from his past. This is a fantastic read that will draw you in from the beginning. Go pick this one up today.
Try Me is book 2 in the Aloha series and is a stand alone, however, I do want to get my hands on book 1 because I really enjoyed this story! This was a sweet story and one that really had me hooked. I loved the characters and the story line. Pearl was such a strong character and not afraid to go after her dreams. Declan has demons from his past stopping him from really living life, but when he meets Pearl he finally starts to live again.
4,5*'s This was my first book by Jill Brashear and it was really enjoyable. I liked the throwback feel of the story and loved the characters. Declan so flawed. Pearl so poised. Together the were like gasoline on a fire, explosive. Individually they had their demons, together they slayed them. This was a perfectly written love story, the sex sizzled, there was appropriate angst and you could feel the joy radiating out of the pages.
This is the 2nd book in this series but is a standalone. Famous surfer Declan lives with the persona of being a party animal, where his life is completely different. Pearl is following her dream off making it in a male dominated career and ends up as Declan’s fake girlfriend. This is a well written steamy and entertaining read, and I highly recommend for all sport romance lovers.

I absolutely loved this book! The chemistry between Pearl and Declan is off-the-charts amazing! Pearl is such a strong character. One of my favorite female heroines yet. This book takes on deep subjects like women's equality and overcoming addiction while still being entertaining and super sexy. Perfect beach read!
It took me a long time to get into this book and I didn't realize it was not set in present day. I ended up putting it down at about 20% and didn't touch it for some time, thinking it was going to be a DNF because it didn't really suck me in right away. After a few days I picked it back up and finished it. It did get better and caught my interest more as the story went on. I'm glad I did pick it back up again. I loved that he wanted the world for her and supported her blossoming career much to the dismay of their agent/manager.
This was my first read from this author and I loved it. It was different. Set mostly in Hawaii, set around the sport of surfing and dealing with a recovering alcoholic. It's set in the 1960's. The author uses Hawaiian dialect too. It's a fun, sexy read!!!
While this book is called a Fake Relationship Romance, I didn’t feel that at all. I understand where it comes from as Pearl was technically signed on with Declan’s agent with the understanding that she was to be his “girlfriend” for a week, but during that week we see no signs of a fake relationship. I would honestly call Try Me a sports romance, but that’s just my opinion.
No matter though, I absolutely adored this book. I loved both Declan and Pearl and I definitely recommend this book whether you like fake relationship romances or sports romances. I’ve never read a surfing book before, and now I just want to eat them up!
I loved this book. This was my first read by this author and most definitely won't be my last. Declan is a sexy surfer, that's given up on finding his own happiness. Then he meets Pearl. Pearl loves surfing and is trying to become a female surfer. The chemistry between Declan and Pearl is palpable, and I loved watching their relationship evolve from a fake relationship to a real one. This is an amazing read and one you don't want to miss out on.
Fantastic!! If you loved the first book then you will love this one even more or just as much. If you didn't read the first book...no worries you don't need to read in order. Dive right in!!!! I love the way Jill writes...keeps me wanting more and then getting nothing done!! I did receive a ARC for my honest opinion and I can't wait for her next book to the series!
A great read, not sure I pronounced any of the wonderful beautiful Hawaiian places right while reading but I was glad to catch the wave of Declan and pearls journey. 2 hot surfers who are attracted to each other instantly. Declan isn’t used to the feelings that occur when he’s around pearl will he finally stop faking relationships to please his agent and start enjoying his life again and will pearl realise she can still follow her dreams and have a relationship. An enjoyable read and although I haven’t read the first book in this series it wasn’t required as this is definitely possible to read as a stand alone
It is truly the rare literary gem that can so pique the readers imagination as well as satisfy a plethora of needs in the beholders mind. TRY ME: A Fake Relationship Romance is that book.
Every. Single. Word. Of this book kept me wanting more. I loved it so much and 100% recommend it to anyone wanting to escape to a beautiful island (with a beautiful man). I still can’t decide which book I like better this one, or the first one in the series, but after reading this one I want to go back and read the first one all over again! Pearl is an amazing character in every way. From her strong will in surfing to her journey with love, she is by far one of the best constructed characters of all times. Declan was also very easy to fall in love with, leaving me turning the page for more. I could not put this book down!!
Sun, surf and romance. Who could ask for more? Brashear weaves a beautiful love story set in one of the most beautiful places on earth: Hawaii. “Try Me” was an easy read because I enjoyed the pictures that the author painted in my mind. Not only does she describe Hawaii like a local, Brashear also gives the characters Declan and Pearl so much depth and soul. You become invested in them and are rooting for their well being. Although I round highly recommend her first book “Try Easy,” this can stand alone.
I loved this. Set yourself up with an ocean or rainforest scented candle or wax melts, put on some ocean and rainforest background music, maybe a coffee or a cocktail, and immerse yourself back in 1960s Hawaii. I read this in one sitting, I couldn’t put it down. The location is as beautiful and real as it was in Try Easy. Declan and Pearl are wonderful characters. I thought this would take place after Try Easy and that we’d see more of Keoni and Lou, but it takes place at the same time, which makes me want to go back and re-read Try Easy or read these in tandem. It’s such a well-crafted setting and so easy to picture Hawaii as it might have been back then. Declan is a recovering alcoholic who still feels guilt over his friend's death and hasn’t been home in years. Now he doesn’t have a choice. Circumstances have aligned to put him back in Hawaii, gearing up to surf the beach where he and Keoni lost Eddie. Pearl is vivacious, confident, smart, and capable. She also has a sad history in Hawaii and with Declan’s help finds her way back to surf the same beach. She was amazing in the confrontation with Sam. Reading about her relationship with her mother and her understanding of her mother's death was bittersweet and really drove home how strong Pearl is as a character. Sometimes it’s easy to forget this is set in the 60s, or it’s a startling reminder not much has changed in 60 years. An underlying theme in this series is how there are basically only white people in the pro-surfing competition and no women. It’s great to read these characters lament this lack of inclusivity and want to change things. The lack of cell phones and social media is refreshing too. Declan proves deeper than I thought of him in Try Easy, seeing him re-meeting people close to Eddie and his guilt while he falls for Pearl is touching. This is so consent-positive and that’s amazing. Declan is respectful and willing to stop if Pearl wants him to. Pearl is brash and goes after what she wants, which happens to be Declan. Their love scenes were powerful. And who hasn’t fantasized about having hot sex with a hot guy while a storm rages around you? Dancing naked in the storm in a tropical jungle is going on my bucket list. It was a gorgeous scene and added some fun to their ‘fake’ relationship. I was happy to read Declan making peace with himself, his father, and Keoni. He definitely deserved it.
Jill Brashear's "Try Me," the second book in the Aloha Series, dives deep into the tumultuous and undeniably hot relationship between Declan Bishop, a world-champion surfer haunted by his past, and Pearl Sunn, a fierce and independent woman determined to make her own mark in the male-dominated surfing world. This novel is a journey of healing, self-discovery, and intense attraction, set against the breathtaking backdrop of Hawaii.
The story opens with Declan, a man drowning his guilt and grief in alcohol after a tragic accident. His agent, McKenna, pulls him out of the abyss, but at a cost: Declan's life becomes a carefully curated lie, his relationships fake, and his passion for surfing overshadowed by his demons. Enter Pearl, a "vodka girl" at a surfing banquet, who instantly captivates Declan with her raw talent on the waves and her no-nonsense attitude. Their initial encounters are charged with a palpable tension, as Declan is drawn to Pearl's authenticity and strength, qualities he desperately lacks.
Pearl is a compelling heroine, driven by a desire to honor her legendary mother's legacy in surfing. She's tough, resilient, and unafraid to challenge the status quo, whether it's dealing with obnoxious men at a party or standing up to powerful industry figures. Her journey is about finding her own voice and proving her worth, not just to the world, but to herself.
The accidental "fake dating" trope is expertly woven into the narrative, providing both comedic relief and a vehicle for Declan and Pearl to confront their vulnerabilities. Their forced proximity, especially during their unexpected detour to Kauai, allows for a deep emotional connection to form. Declan's gradual opening up about his past—the car crash, his struggles with alcohol, and the lingering guilt over Eddie's death—is handled with sensitivity and depth. Pearl, despite her own fears (particularly her intense fear of flying), consistently pushes Declan to face his truths, becoming his anchor and his light.
The surfing scenes are vivid and exhilarating, transporting the reader directly onto the waves. Brashear's descriptions of the ocean, the breaks, and the sheer physicality of surfing are immersive and passionate. The chemistry between Declan and Pearl is undeniable, building from a simmering tension to explosive, heartfelt intimacy. The "spice" is abundant and well-integrated, reflecting the raw passion and deep connection that develops between them. Their time in the isolated cabin in Kauai is a highlight, allowing them to shed their public personas and truly connect on a profound level.
"Try Me" explores themes of grief, addiction, self-forgiveness, and the pursuit of dreams. It's a story about breaking free from the past and finding love and acceptance in unexpected places. The supporting characters, like Declan's former best friend Keoni and his manipulative agent McKenna, add layers of conflict and emotional complexity.
My Verdict: "Try Me" is a captivating and emotionally resonant romance. Jill Brashear delivers a powerful story of two broken individuals finding healing and love in each other. If you're looking for a steamy, character-driven romance with a strong sense of place and compelling emotional arcs, this book is a fantastic read.
My Rating System: 1⭐️: The book didn’t hold my interest and/or had significant issues that overshadowed any redeeming qualities for me, but generally not my cup of tea. Most likely did not finish the book. 2⭐️: The book didn’t quite resonate with me, and while my experience wasn’t remarkable, I did finish it. It had some redeeming qualities and potential but fell short in execution. Recommendable, though with some reservations. 3⭐️: Good read, but didn’t quite stand out. Still worth recommending to others. 4⭐️: Really enjoyed it and stayed engaged throughout. Would read the book again. Definitely recommendable. 5⭐️: Incredible writing that made me deeply connect with the characters. I was completely absorbed in the world and didn’t want it to end. This book stayed with me even when I wasn’t reading it. I'd gladly reread it and highly recommend it to everyone!.
