Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, Lady Mallowan, DBE (née Miller) was an English writer known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, particularly those revolving around fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. She also wrote the world's longest-running play, the murder mystery The Mousetrap, which has been performed in the West End of London since 1952. A writer during the "Golden Age of Detective Fiction", Christie has been called the "Queen of Crime". She also wrote six novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. In 1971, she was made a Dame (DBE) by Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to literature. Guinness World Records lists Christie as the best-selling fiction writer of all time, her novels having sold more than two billion copies.
This best-selling author of all time wrote 66 crime novels and story collections, fourteen plays, and six novels under a pseudonym in romance. Her books sold more than a billion copies in the English language and a billion in translation. According to Index Translationum, people translated her works into 103 languages at least, the most for an individual author. Of the most enduring figures in crime literature, she created Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple. She atuhored The Mousetrap, the longest-running play in the history of modern theater.
This is just the best little compilation of Jane Marple. That she's one of the keen observers of life makes her takes often pity and well worth noting.
Some of my favourites:
On the Art of Conversation If people do not choose to lower their voices, one must assume that they are prepared to be overheard. - At Bertram's Hotel
On Men & Women I've known many cases where the most beautiful and ethereal girls have shown next to no moral scruple- though, of course, gentlemen never wish to believe it of them. - The Murder at the Vicarage
A very nice woman. The kind that would so easily marry a bad lot. In fact, the sort of woman that would marry a murderer if she were given half a chance. - Nemesis
‘From what I have heard and read, a man who does a wicked crime like this and gets away with it the first time, is, alas, encouraged. He thinks it’s easy, he thinks he’s clever. And so he repeats it.’ - A Caribbean Mystery
On the Young ‘Life is more worth living, more full of interest when you are likely to lose it. It shouldn’t be, perhaps, but it is. When you’re young and strong and healthy, and life stretches ahead of you, living isn’t really important at all … But old people know how valuable life is and how interesting.’ - A Caribbean Mystery
On Murderers ‘If they tried once, they’ll try again. If you’ve made up your mind to murder someone you don’t stop because the first time it didn’t come off. Especially if you’re not suspected.’ - A Murder is Announced
‘The trouble is … that people are greedy. Some people. That’s so often, you know, how things start. You don’t start with murder, with wanting to do murder or even thinking of it. You just start by being greedy, by wanting more than you’re going to have.’ - 4:50 from Paddington
‘Money … can do a lot to ease one’s path through life.’ - A Murder is Announced
On Herself ‘I so often seem to get mixed up in the things that are really no concern of mine. Crimes I mean, and peculiar happenings.’ - A Pocket Full of Rye
There's a version of this for Hercule Poirot so yes, I'm going to buy & read that also.
I’m very ordinary. An ordinary rather scary old lady. And that of course is very good camouflage.”
Couldn’t resist getting this little book, especially since it was half price. In it, editor Tony Medawar does a great job of putting together some juicy quotes from our Miss Marple. I was however really impressed by the life story he put together of our beloved character. Even I was surprised by some of the facts he ‘uncovered’.
Très bon ce recueil de citations ! Quel esprit piquant !
HarperCollins sent me this little treat for review – a little book of Miss Marple quotes. It’s beautifully produced in hardback and the quotes are divided up into sections, such as The Art of Conversation, Human Nature, Men and Women, etc.
“If people do not choose to lower their voices, one must assume that they are prepared to be overheard.”
It has an introduction by Tony Medawar, partly about Christie’s inspirations for the character and partly a biography of what can be gleaned of Miss Marple’s life. The book also includes a brief article called “Does a Woman’s Instinct Make Her a Good Detective?”, written by Christie for a British newspaper in 1928 to publicise a set of short stories she was issuing at that time. And at the back it has a complete bibliography of all the Miss Marple novels and short stories. Apparently there’s a companion volume in the same style for Poirot fans, called Little Grey Cells.
“I’ve never been an advocate of teetotalism. A little strong drink is always advisable on the premises in case there is a shock or an accident. Invaluable at such times. Or, of course, if a gentleman should arrive suddenly.”
It’s the kind of book that would be a fun little gift for a Miss Marple fan – not substantial enough to be a main gift; it didn't take long for me to flick through the pages - but a good idea for a stocking filler. There are days when we could all do with a bit of Miss Marple’s clear-eyed wisdom...
“Most people – and I don’t exclude policemen – are far too trusting for this wicked world. They believe what is told them. I never do. I’m afraid I always like to prove a thing for myself.”
I have a great affection and weakness for quote books. I love reading little snippets from books, movies, or just from famous people. I collect quotes myself--jotting down phrases and paragraphs that grab my attention as I read. I also love Agatha Christie's mysteries. So what could be better than a little quote book entirely devoted to the words of Miss Jane Marple, spinster sleuth extraordinaire? Nothing...except maybe also having a companion book devoted to the words of Hercule Poirot (which I do).
I thoroughly enjoyed spending time this evening reading Miss Marple's thoughts on everything from Men & Women to Crime & Detection to Human Nature & Life. This is a lovely little volume that I am glad to add to my quote book collection. I wasn't quite as enamored with her essay at the end of the book ("Does a Woman's Instinct Make Her a Good Detective"). Dame Agatha seems to think women are less methodical and less likely to enjoy the thrill of the hunt than men. Well...maybe some women, but not all women...or even most women as she implies. Christie seems to have subscribed to several gender stereotypes of her day.
★★★★ for the book overall. If it had been quotes only, I'd most likely have given it five.
اقتباسات مس ماربل ❤❤ كتاب ممتع جدا غير انه لم ترق لي المقاله الاخيره هذه مجموعه من الاقتباسات ‘If you disregard the smoke and come to the fire, you know where youare. You just come down to the actual facts of what happened.
‘Conversations are always dangerous, if you have something to hide
‘If people do not choose to lower their voices, one must assume thatthey are prepared to be overheard
‘I have had too much experience of life to believe in the infallibility ofdoctors. Some of them are clever men and some of them are not, andhalf the time the best of them don’t know what is the matter with you 😂
‘One is alone when the last one who remembers is gone💔
‘If you expect me to feel sympathy, regret, urge an unhappy childhood, blame bad environment; if you expect me to weep over him, thisyoung murderer of yours, I do not feel inclined to do so. I do not like evil beings who do evil things👌
‘If I get stories told to me rather often, I don’t really mind hearing themagain because I’ve usually forgotten them.
‘Murder – the wish to do murder – is something quite different. It –how shall I say? – it defies God
‘Murderers always find it difficult to keep things simple. They can’tkeep themselves from elaborating
I remember a saying of my Great Aunt Fanny’s. I was sixteen at thetime and thought it particularly foolish ... She used to say: “The young people think the old people are fools; but the old people know the young people are fools
Here is a little known book by Agatha Christie. The story opens with Miss Jane Marple on the way home on a train when she witness a man murdering a young lady. When she try to report the murder people think she has had a bad dream. When being put off as just being a old lady spencer. Miss Marple is not a lady to be put off. That is when she goes out to prove a murder did take place. The story is short but is a good read if you love a who done it. ! It has a old big creepy house in the English country side and has a bunch of strange weird and greedy character's. I found this book by chance and think this to be a least popular book by Ms. Agatha Christie. For a quick read pick this one up and have a little fun solving a who done it. !!
Ona to není žádná "literatura".
A nice collection of Jane Marple quotes. This little book also includes a brief bio of Miss Marple's life, and an essay by Agatha Christie: "Does a Woman's Instinct Make Her a Good Detective?" I think it does!
This is a delightful little book with a short biography of Miss Marple's life, full of popular quotes from a variety of her many cases on several subjects, & a complete list of the stories/novels in which she appears, as well as a brief character analysis from Agatha Christie. Very nice!
I thought it was an Agatha Christie book and without browsing it I bought it, so being a book of quotes and not being a fan of Agatha I found it quite useless but it is a nice book with some nice quotes.
For any Miss Marple fan, for any mystery reader or writer, for any Christie fan, this little book is a wonderful treasure trove. Organized by types of quotes, the book also has a short bio on Miss Marple as a forward and a short essay at the end by Agatha, herself. Highly recommend.
