Probationary Constable Dave Stewart knew that William Bailey was guilty of murder. All he had to do to convict him was change one line in his statement. Detective Chief Superintendent John McCauley loves dirt. He collects it in secret files to use against his enemies and since Stewart slept with the beautiful Detective Sergeant Anne Wallace. He is the enemy. Stewart hatches a plan to destroy the evidence against him, but what he finds inside those files, is evidence of a vile paedophile ring operating under McCauley’s nose. Now three people are dead and Dave Stewart is the prime suspect.
Robert White is an Amazon best selling crime fiction author. His first two published novels DIRTY and THE FIX have sold over ten thousand copies and have appeared in the top ten downloaded novels in genre. Robert is an ex cop, who captures the brutality of northern British streets in his work. He combines believable characters, slick plots and vivid dialogue to immerse the reader in his fast paced story-lines. He was born in Leeds, England, the illegitimate son of a jazz musician and a factory girl. He hated school, leaving at age sixteen. He joined Lancashire Constabulary in 1980 and served for fifteen years, his specialism being Tactical Firearms. Robert then spent four years in the Middle East before returning to the UK in 2000. He now lives in Lancashire with his wife Nicola, and his Patterdale terrier dog Flash. His controversial new novel UNREST is available now.
It's a very gritty story. This is a complicated plot, but not overly complicated and it just gets darker and darker and deeper and deeper. Fantastic characters that leap off the page. The abrupt ending screams for a second book.
Holy hell, what a book! This thing grabs you by the throat from the start and never lets go. Full on thrills from beginning to end!
This is the second book I’ve read by Robert White, after I came over Breaking Bones a while back. I stumbled upon it on Audible completely by accident, and I’m very glad I did, because both that, and this, are excellent books!
White writes the grittiest, hardest, roughest thrillers you can imagine. Set in the UK, Dirty follows Probationary Constable Dave Stewart, who fucks up while on the job. Not bad, mind you (at least not very bad), but bad enough that it lands him in a heap of trouble. That trouble keeps growing like an ugly, infected tumor, to the point where everything eventually goes – pardon my French – straight to hell. Suddenly people are beaten up, people are killed, and people are accused of murder.
The questions soon becomes: Who did it? Who framed who? And who are the dirty ones?
White’s writing is direct, brutal and captivating. It’s not difficult to read, at the same time it’s impossible to put down. Honestly, it’s the perfect type of writing for a thriller like this.
I’d recommend Robert White to any lover of the thriller and mystery genre – he deserves many more readers than he already has. This stuff is fantastic.
Don't let this pass you by I listened to this on audio and my opinion is this is the best book I've read/listened to this year fantastic Great characters Great story edge of the seat stuff I couldn't get enough of it this had the lot o don't like spoiling it for others by giving bits away but this is one that if you read it you won't put down a real page turner and if you listen you'll be up late then early again so you can hear more I have to credit the narrator hear different voices and accents all done well more importantly he didn't do women in that squeaky voice some try when impersonating a woman which spoils the story they were treated with the same respect he gave to all his other characters and this helped the story enormously i loved it I hope my review will help you and if it encourages you to try this book then please I hope that you enjoy it as I did 5 stars from me I only wish I could have given it more finally a huge thank you to the author Robert White for a superb book as I said earlier best book I've read/ listened to in 2021 and there have been few real good ones I've read /listened to Enjoy everyone
Absolutely top draw. A thoroughly enjoyable, non stop read of deception, action, emotion and the unexpected. As usual this author pulls no punches and if you're looking for fluffy, feel good story lines this is not for you; as it seems much closer the unforgiving nature that is reality. Thanks for a great read and definitely one of your best!
Great from start to finish. Full of twists of and turns good cops bad cops god bad guys and bad bad guys and of course romance. What more do you need. Never, boring and a very well written.
Another great book from Robert white I have read all the Rick Fuller books and sad when they came to the end this book was supurb very fast paced brilliant characters read it all in one sitting can't wait to start the next one???????
Another great book! Love the writing style. The story line is punchy and realistic and the characters were believable as the author draws on his own experience in the police force. Would definitely recommend.
Love going back to the eighties no mobile phones and internet Please keep writing robert, I am now up to date with all your work and hope to see it on the screen soon
Pretty good really. After about a quarter of the way through, I thought it was going to be pretty predictable, but it really wasn't. Few good twists, and some graphic descriptions that didn't make comfortable reading.
This book could have been a 4-star book, maybe even verging on 5. The story was compelling and interesting and the author is clearly a talented writer. However, what ruined it for me was the fact that it was clear that the author relied on spellcheckers rather than editors. In just one casual read-though I noticed over thirty errors, in the form of bad punctuation (apostrophes before and after the s in possessives), anachronisms (cops talking about DNA fingerprint evidence 4 years before it was developed), factual errors (implying that a weasel is a rodent, saying that O negative blood accounts for 3% of the population - two minutes on Google shows that it is closer to 7%, quoting the 23rd Psalm and calling it The Lord's Prayer), and especially using the wrong form of homonyms or the wrong word entirely (bye/by, wit/with, deaf/dead, bee/been, counsel/Council, puss/pus, you're/your, brassier/brassiere, taught/taut, non/none, throes/throws, were/we're, breath/breathe).
I would encourage Robert White to keep writing. The story was good and generally well-written. But next time, hire a copy editor instead of relying on yourself or some family member. These kinds of errors take the reader out of the story and give a general impression of amateur writing.
There was just something about this book that had me hooked the whole way through. The characters were, on the whole, believable and the protagonists likeable, particularly Dave. The twists in the plot, particularly the one about halfway through were great, they really shocked me and made the plot unpredictable and exciting. The ending was good but still left me wanting to read more and I feel there were some loose ends that I wish had been tied up. But aside from this and a few spelling and grammar mistakes, I really enjoyed it.
Quite brilliant, if not for one part. What a great 80's set police thriller. Loved it and agreed with mostly all other reviews, I also stayed up late saying just one more chapter! Some parts I started welling up, lots of twists and emotions throughout this book, you'll understand when you read it and you must!
If you are looking for a fast pace book which is full if surprises then this book is for you. I really enjoyed all the twists as many were not expected I will definitely look out for more books by Robert as loved his writing style
