David Jason Latour (b. 1977) is an American comic book artist and writer known for his work for Image, Dark Horse, Marvel and DC comics on titles such as Wolverine, Winter Soldier, Southern Bastards and Spider-Gwen.
I have an unpopular opinion that I'll share, but don't shoot me... I'm not a big fan of the Spider-Verse comic books. There I said it!
For the most part I did enjoy the Spider-Gwen Omnibus by Jason Latour though. Gwen Stacey and the characters of Earth-65 are incredibly likeable and well rounded as alternative variants to their Earth-616 counterparts and the art work here is amazingly vibrant and feels very modern.
I did find that I enjoyed some parts more than others, particularly Gwen's own series'. I wasn't overly impressed with the many crossover stories contained here with the exception of Spider-Women Alpha & Omega and I did find some of it particularly tricky to follow, which definitely altered the pacing for me.
Overall, this is a great read for Spider-Verse fans. That said, I'm not one of them, so my interest is definitely limited here and this wasn't enough to convert me. Did I enjoy it? For the most part, yes! Will I ever read it again though? Very doubtful.
Love the character, the costume, the supporting cast. Absolutely adore the Earth-65 Captain America. The first issues are great. Then there are some Spider crossovers mostly written by Bendis and Hopeless, which are fine I guess but maybe seem a little generic. The Tom Taylor Wolverine annual is good.
And then Spider-Gwen, the book, becomes so bad that it's virtually unreadable. Characters either go over the top and/or stop making sense. The Venom story is just terrible. Plot twists make no sense and I've been reading comics for over 40 years, so if I can't follow what's going on, you guys done (Howard the) Ducked up.
Huge disappointment, especially since it had so much promise.
This is a Spider-Verse book as its set on Earth-65. Peter Parker died in Gwen's arms, ans every thing is different. She is in a band called the Mary Janes, Frank Castle is a detective, Daredevil is a gangster. Captain America is a woman, stuff like that. This collects many mini series and issues, its gets kinda sloppy at times. The style and artwork is great, but with the switching between universes its sometimes hard to keep up. Its just alot with Miles Morales in the mix and a pretty convoluted story arc in the end where Gwen becomes Venom. Also a couple stories barely involve Spider-Gwen. This was a fun run, but could have been handled a bit better in my opinion.
This was a lot of fun to revisit. I remember how excited I was at the announcement that there was going to be an alternate dimension Gwen Stacy web slinger and now to have this giant brick of her story and for it to have lived up to how excited I was years ago is pretty wild.
“Tragically hip” keeps coming to mind and I’m not entirely sure what that means but I mean it in the best possible way.
Starts off pretty strong with good stories and character development. Issue is, the book then hits a few crossover storylines and becomes increasingly difficult to follow, really confusing. At times I started to skim read during the 2nd half of the book due to both confusion and overall lack of interest.
The art was a mixed bag as well. Overall, the panels were at times beautifully drawn, really popping out the page with the stunning colors. The issue I had with the art was that the action never really flowed well panel to panel. So while the character interaction scenes were great, the action scenes were muddled/confusing and I didn’t get a great cohesive sense of the battle from them.
I do actually plan to read this book again - I get the feeling that a second read through actually may improve this book as it may increase the overall understanding of certain plot lines having read the complete book previously
as someone who's not into spiderman comics but is into the spiderman (into the spiderverse) movies, this was very fast phased and gave no explanation to any of the enemies (or friends). i think that is all supposed to be this way tho, more like a nod to the original spiderman comics than an actual standalone. the art was very pretty and i got through it in the end. if you are more familiar with spiderman himself i'd recommend this tho!
Volume 0- 4 stars, 2022 Volume 1- 3 stars, 2022 (original review: Really really liked the story but the art was not my favourite, then it changed for one issue and somehow was even worse? Idk. Also the amount of spelling mistakes in this comic was crazy. You'd think being a marvel comic there wouldn't be so much but omg it drove me crazy) Volume 2- 4 stars, 2023 Volume 3- 3 stars, 2023 Volume 4- currently reading
Look, even when the plot is confusing and senseless - it is still gorgeous. And between crazy moments, there are some stellar heartwarming ones. So, yeah, Spider Gwen and Earth 65 will always hold a special place in my heart and I admire the word Latour, Renzi and Rodriguez put into creating this amazing new canon.
Amazing book! If you ever wanna read about the character spider run from the spider verse movie I highly recommend this book. It’s a bit pricey but totally worth it.
I love Spider-Gwen so much. Reading through her story in this one big omnibus is a great way to consume the story. It has its faults, but all together it's a great collection. Thwip thwip.
I enjoyed this one a lot and absolutely flew through this omnibus in a little under a week. My favorite part was probably the Spider-Gwen Annual that was included.
Loses a star because the Venom storyline towards the end felt very convoluted and didn’t feel like it got proper closure.
