WHAT CAN YOU CHANGE TODAY, AND NOT PUT OFF UNTIL TOMORROW?
Dr Alex is on a mission to empower us to make our own health choices, take positive control and feel equipped and inspired to make those small changes today that energize and future-proof us for life.
"Health and happiness come from the cumulative effects of many small and positive daily changes to our lifestyle. It's about building sustainable and healthy habits - taking small and purposeful steps to a healthy future. By the end of the book I hope my readers have developed their own 'bespoke health toolkit' to be used across every aspect of their lives, and to make long-lasting and meaningful change."
What you do consistently has a direct impact on your day-to-day health, your immune system, your mental health, your metabolism, your bone density, your heart health, your blood pressure, your energy levels and how you fight disease generally. Your lifestyle is often your body's biggest support system and the more robust you can make that, the more you can rely on it to get you through. Think of it like your life insurance policy.
Live Well Every Day addresses the very modern health challenges of todays world - anxiety, social pressure and mental health, immune system health, sexual health, gut health, and how to be fit, flexible and eat well in a sedentary world... Get the facts, pick your goals and take action with Dr Alex.
I read this as part of an Instagram readalong with Adventures with Words and a group of lovely bookstagrammers. I have to admit, I have never seen an episode of Love Island so had no clue who Dr Alex was. I have never read a self care book before but having gone through a major upheaval in my life recently (divorce) and having gotten into some bad habits over lockdown, I thought it was the ideal opportunity! Divided into 7 chapters, we read one a day as part of the readalong. - Passion & Purpose looked at fulfilment in life and why it is important - A Healthy Mind looks at mental health detailing stress, anxiety, depression and the detrimental effect social media can sometimes have on our mental health - Nutrition looks at good nutrition, caffeine and the dangers of excessive alcohol intake - Fitness and Flexibility looks at why fitness is important and gives a really good no-excuse workout for those short on time or motivation - Recharge looks at sleep, why it is important and how to get into good sleep habits - Sex & Relationships talks about dating apps, sexually transmitted diseases and why relationships (not just romantic) are important - Taking Control of Your Health looks at health issues you can treat yourself and those that you should definitely get checked out I think Live Well Every Day is generally aimed at the younger generation (I’m 47 and I’m not sure I am really the target audience). There also wasn’t anything in the book that I didn’t already know but what I did find useful was that it reminded me of things I could be doing. I have generally got lazier during lockdown and have fallen into bad eating and drinking habits so have put on weight. Inspired by this book, I have started walking to work now we are allowed back in the office again and try to move around more when I’m working from home. I am also trying to cut back on the bad food and alcohol, at least during the week! I liked the way Dr Alex writes – he uses his own life examples which are always interesting to hear as well as his medical knowledge and isn’t at all preachy in his advice. A useful self care book if you feel you need some motivation and incentives to get back on track. Nicely presented with lots of photos, it is really accessible and easy to read.
A lot of this book is common sense but I found it a good reminder to take care of ourselves physically and mentally with some useful tools. I really enjoyed the writing style and how Alex brought in his own experiences.
Need to start by saying I’m a big fan of Dr Alex, however I was listening to this as an Audiobook rather than reading it, so some of the features (workout guides, symptom lists etc) became a bit repetitive and boring for me. Started off really well and I think there’s a lot of useful information, but I think I chose the wrong format.
Nice easy read from the lovely Dr Alex. A lot of simple ideas and processes which are already well known but serve as a good reminder for finding balance.
Loved this. I thought it would be a book just for fans (like me!) But it is so well thought out and useful. I know I'll be referring to this all the time. Thank you Dr Alex
I have followed Dr Alex on Instagram for around three years now and I just think it's wonderful how he has used his new-found fame and growing platform following his television appearance.
Live Well Every Day, Dr Alex's first book, has been on my radar since it was announced and I was delighted to take part in the readalong with Adventures With Words.
Live Well Every Day is aimed to put us in charge of our own health. It is divided into seven chapters; Passion & Purpose, A Healthy Mind, Nutrition, Fitness & Flexibility, Recharge, Sex & Relationships and Taking Control Of Your Health. Dr Alex believes that each of these are fundamental areas of health. If we focus on keeping ourselves healthy when we are young, both mentally and physically, we are less likely to develop health problems when we are older.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to everyone. Not only do we have information on how to keep ourselves healthy such as mindful eating habits, tips for a better bedtime routine and easy exercises to incorporate into our daily routine, but there are case studies and bits about Dr Alex's own experiences. It is great for people who don't know where to start.
I love that there are activities for us to do and blank pages for us to fill in like our health MOT, a food diary and movement diary. Some things I knew about myself already but reading about it in this context made me face it head on and now I know what to do to change things.
I was excited about this book and preordered on audible as soon as I had the option to. Listened to it over a couple of days while at work.
Dr Alex is such a great role model and has done such incredible work not only as his job as an A&E doctor but also becoming an Ambassador for Mental Health which is incredible.
It was good listening to Dr Alex give professional advice but also going into detail on his own life and his own struggles with mental health. The chapters include action plans and tools to help guide you and think of your life path going forward.
After Dr Alex appearing on Love Island and his following increasing, it has given him such a great platform to promote and show the importance of mental health and getting the help/support you need.
I think Dr Alex is a fantastic force for good and an amazing role model for doctors and everyone else. His work on mental health is inspirational and I loved his story. This book is great for people who could do with more guidance on how to live a healthier life. It touches on lots of important points and his writing style was easy to read. The only reason it is a three star for me is that I’m a medical student and I knew most of it. I expected it to be aimed at a slightly higher level than it was, and more about his journey.
Quite enjoyed this book. Good oversight on all aspect of health (really enjoyed the section on common illness and things to look out for). Really emphasizes taking small steps everyday to achieving a more healthy lifestyle (body & mind) so great if you're looking for some easy motivation to kick start your journey. Dr Alex talks about his own personal experiences as well which really exposes his own journey which makes this book very relatable and non-judgmental in anyway. Easy reading!
There's nothing groundbreaking about this book as it's factual and so you should know most of it already. (Which I like, if a book has something no-one has ever mentioned before in regards to health, it's normally total bullshit.)
That said.
I think it's definitely a good book for young adults and teenagers to get a good all round look at life and how to live well and stay well.
I'd probably buy it for my kids if they were older.
Live well every day does exactly what it says on the tin… tackling modern day health concerns in a simple, and action filled way!
Each chapter is explained simply sharing real life experiences! With a action plan following each chapter including tools to help you think of your path forward!
Certainly made me think of the things I could start to do differently
This self help book (is not my first) and was written in a very informal way which made for light reading and had some very good tips on how to sleep better and get into a routine - one of the things I know I need to work on the most.
A lot of really good advice on various subjects including managing stress, sexual health and some great excercise tips.
For me the more useful sections were towards the end of the book. If I wanted to refer back to this book to remind myself (as the dialogue is so chatty) there are parts which I may find hard to locate.
Dr Alex George using his own family, patients, friends and his own experiences including how he nearly died of sepsis really are important life lessons - especially when it comes to looking after your mind and body and knowing what not to ignore.
Would I read this book again? No as I felt like I got what I needed out of it but I do enjoy his content so he now has an avid follower and fan in me.
Overall a ⭐️⭐️⭐️ rating as this is not my first rodeo!
I like how this book strips health and well-being right back to its basics. These days there is so much noise around how you should be healthy it’s hard to know what to believe and what advice you should take on board. I’d really recommend this book to anyone looking to kickstart a healthier lifestyle.
Really good practical information that will help so many people. I flew through it and read it in a few hours. I couldn’t put it down. You don’t have to know Alex to enjoy and get something from this book. Will be keeping this book on my shelf. It is very important and good info in it. Really recommend!!
I’ve tried a few self help type books and this is the only one I have enjoyed enough to finish. I loved the real life examples and the fact it’s written by an actual doctor who seems to want to improve peoples lives. Definitely recommend!
I have absolutely loved dipping into this book the past few months! Thank you Dr Alex for the inspiration, your knowledge and such honest and thoughtful topics covered. A man for our generation to guide us over the coming decades. Thanks!!
Lots of great common sense advice, some of which I already knew but a few gems too. The book is nicely put together & the voice of Dr Alex is really prevalent throughout, which is good as you know he actually wrote the book. Some useful prompts at the back & nice images of Dr Alex too ;0)
Random read for me but doing 75 hard had to read non fiction and don't really get along with self help books so thought this would be an ease in. Very basic and most points common knowledge but some helpful reminders to look after ourselves.
Having just read his other book I think a lot of the content was similar to me anyway. Definitely a useful book for the me 3/4 years ago. Good to recap on a lot of the knowledge and I’m sure others will find it maybe more helpful than I did.
Very informative with first-hand experiences, some good advice. Recommend reading if looking for tips on living a better lifestyle with a busy schedule
Outstanding book which has greatly helped me with making better choices in life. This book will help me find balance in my life and prioritise both my physical and mental well-being.
Dr Alex George is such a down to earth, normal, understanding human being, well that's exactly the feeling I got from this book anyway. On days where human kind is against me, that day I'm cut up on a roundabout, the day that a patient is rude, the day that my children send me to the brink of depair. I can go to this book, pick up any page, and remember there are good people out there, and better days are always around the corner.
Live Well Every Day deals with day to day topics like diet, exercise and sleep but also focuses on the less discussed but equally important subjects of sex, physical illness and mental health. A book that teaches its reader, guides its reader but never judges. That was the most important thing for me, the feeling of not being judged. Not afraid to approach the unapproachable and make it normal.
I cant wait to journey through life with this new wellbeing bible. Adaptable to every life change, this has come to me at just the right time. If you're wondering whether to pick this book up, do! Not only is he bloody handsome, I could pin his pictures on my wall, he is an inspirational wellbeing guru who is just so normal!
