She thought that fate was finished with her. But it was only beginning…
After being banished to a remote abbey, Daiyu thinks the machinations of the inner court can no longer hurt her. But she is wrong. A ghost from the past emerges and threatens everything Daiyu has worked so hard to build for herself.
From the opulence of the inner court and the right hand of the emperor, Daiyu finds herself back at the beginning, back outside the imposing red walls of the Forbidden City. Daiyu discovers that she has the power to choose her future, but both futures carry a risk she is not sure she has the strength to face. But underneath it all is a love so powerful, Daiyu cannot walk away.
I really loved the ending to this trilogy. This was another fast paced quick read. Daiyu is as lovable as ever, her concern for others as well as the poor is touching. She's truly altruistic.
In this novel Daiyu has been sent to a temple to live out her days as a nun after her actions in the previous book enraged the emperor enough to demote her and send her away. Daiyu spends her days somewhat content until she finds out the emperor has passed and Honghui has been made the new emperor, and he wants Daiyu for his empress. With Daiyu once again an empress all is peaceful, until Lihua returns with ulterior motives.
This book wraps everything up in a nice little package. Many of the questions I had through these books gets answered and the ending is well written. It's a nice payoff for sticking through three books. Historical fiction fans and those who love the inner court intrigues of China will devour this series.
If you want a relaxing book, don't read it. But if you want a book filled with danger and action, you found it. This had me, literally, sitting on the edge of my chair. The only time I could relax, was when Daiyu visited her parents. Very good ending to this exciting series!
I received a copy from Booksprout and chose to review it.
“Empress in Danger” is the conclusion to the “Empress in Disguise” trilogy by Amanda Roberts and Zoey Gong, where, true to their writing style, the authors blend historical facts with a brand-new retelling of Twain’s “The Prince and the Pauper” (the unforgettable tale on Edward VI).
Daiyu’s journey is coming to an end; the young pauper girl, who exchanged his fate for the chance to becoming the Emperor’s bride, and has successfully conquered the Emperor’s heart and becoming the new Empress, has – after being forced to flee the Forbidden City – been banned to a remote abbey. But the danger has been hasn’t been averted, much to the contrary, Daiyu’s life is about to fall down like a house of cards. And one more Daiyu finds herself right back at the very beginning of her journey, having to choose between two paths, each of them with dangers of their own.
Roberts & Gong have an undoubtedly gift for China historical-based storytelling, their description of the Forbidden City comes alive before the reader’s eyes allowing us to participate in the action, the characters are highly relatable, and despite being this one of the most broadly known tales in contemporary literature, the mix of historical facts, retelling and pure fiction borne of the authors’ fruitful imagination makes this version a very fresh and enjoyable story, fully satisfying from start to finish. Fans of China history will discover a rather accurate version of both the Peking siege and the Chinese folktale Mulan embedded into the plot.
We pick up up with Daiyu at the Temple where she ended up in the last book. From there it’s a thrilling adventure, full of court intrigue, assasinations, babies and life in the palace. Secrets are revealed, battles won and lost. A a great ending to this Empress’s tale. Highly recommended.

I loved this last part of this amazing series. Daiyu's story has been a pretty epic read all together and this final installment didn't disappoint. I look forward to reading more by these authors.

This book couldn't hold my attention for long, so for the moment I'll leave it. I couldn't figure out in what age or context this adventure is supposed to happen. I think it's not for me; it's a personal thing I guess.
A definite page turner and hard to put down! Very well written and keeps you wanting more and more! I love trilogies and these are definitely among my favorites now!
I enjoyed this final part of the trilogy, as much as I did the other two. Daiyu's story is an interesting one but more than anything else, the rich backdrop is what I really enjoyed. Roberts and Gong has done a great job bringing that Manchu dynasty to life, with their vivid descriptions of the robes as well as the buildings and people who lived in that era. I feel that I have learnt so much about ancient China, all while I enjoyed a great story about a girl who had to face difficult choices and was brave enough to make the best of the outcome in her life.
