This book does come with a trigger warning because it includes scenes of verbal and physical abuse in a relationship.

This was an interesting YA romance because it dived into concepts and themes that are not usually addressed in YA books.

What I liked: that it included themes that real teens face and don’t know how to react to. The language in the book felt real and didn’t feel fake. The novel is well written.

What I didn’t like: at times the book feels dated like it didn’t take place in current times. Some of the references to someone being out of minutes on their phone and having a computer in a den, makes the book seem as if it’s set in the mid 2000s and not today.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and recommend it. I did receive an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review from the author.

This book was very hard for me to rate. It is very well written and definitely a page-turner, almost impossible to put down. I might also read the next installment (announced at the end of my Kindle version). The story is also different from your typical YA romance, because it talks about the darker side of teenage dating, so it is very, very far from fluffy and occasionally really difficult to read. Which I know a lot of reviewers see as its forte - and I suppose I would have seen it the same way, but I have two very basic problems with the way some of the characters and their choices are presented. Hence two stars.

So, that's it. I am torn. Do I regret reading the book? No, I don't. Will I read it again? Probably not. But as I said, I might give part 2 a go.

Praise for Connected

This was a fantastic book about boundaries and a girl getting to know herself. She discovers what she wants and DOESN'T want in a relationship. I think this is a great novel fer young adult readers that may be experiencing a similar thing in their own life. It was will written and flowed almost seamlessly. I would highly recommend and look forward to the next installment.

FULL REVIEW ON BOOKSTAGRAM - @ArcheteypesAndAnecdotes
Book Review Blog - Archetypes & Anecdotes

This book reads easily like a traditional YA novel, but tackles hard issues along the way. It is not often that you encounter YA contemporary romance that specifically focuses on toxic relationships featuring gaslighting, manipulation, and possible legal actions - like restraining orders. These are things that the high school girl protagonist is faced with, which has the ability to open the eyes of so many young women in middle and high school. If I had read this exact book when I was a teen, I wouldn't have felt so alone and may have made different decisions in my relationships.

This will be an ongoing part of my high school classroom's library!

There were moments where I had to set this book down, because the emotion on the page was a tidal wave ready to pull me under. Bethany is an incredible character that you can't help but love from the very first page; taking you through her journey of self discovery and remembering her own importance. I went in knowing this book was going to be a heavier subject matter, but I was so, so thrilled at Bethany's realistic portrayal.

I'm glad that I took a chance with this book because it was so good. It was written so well and you could feel everything what Beth went through. She didn't have easy with her boyfriend because he controlled her. Good that she had her friends and especially Xion949. He was so good for her and I really liked him. I had my an idea who he might be and I was right. Can't wait to read more from this author.

Highly recommend all teens to read this book! I couldn't put it down once I started reading it. Very well written, great job getting the story across the way it is.

This book is completely out of the norm for me, I usually read paranormal romance, wolves, vampires, fairies, fae folk, and things of that nature. But I would highly recommend this book to anyone! I couldn't put it down once I started reading. It reminded me of my days back in high school, I wish I had the wisdom of Bethany, she has great friends and a.great support system. I wish every teen could read this book and learn from it.

Stuck in an emotionally abusive relationship, Bethany is constantly gaslit by her boyfriend. The author puts a trigger warning at the beginning, which is definitely needed. She does not shy away from discussing these topics. I read this book in one sitting! I just needed to see Bethany happy. Although I love the role of Xion, I do wish Bethany was able to escape her relationship without the help from another boy. Xion was able to show her what a healthy relationship looks like, but I wish she took a break in between Trevor and a new boy. I did like that the book ended with her family supporting her, and her getting the help she needed to process her trauma.

I hate Trevor so much, and the author did a fantastic job writing his character. He was so manipulative and always had Bethany wrapped around his finger. It was difficult to read because I just wanted Bethany to get away from him, but that was point. We need more books like this to show that not all relationships are good, and that you need to get out if there’s any kind of abuse.

Really enjoyed they way the characters developed. The topic is something that isn’t talked about in ya books but should be. It handled everything especially anxiety well.
It was amazing to have an insight on how something like an abusive relationship can have such a hold over a person.
I will absolutely be reading what happens next because it kept me gripped.

I was provided an ARC of this book in exchange for a review. There are a few trigger warnings for this book as it includes instance of mental/emotional abuse, gaslighting and other sensitive themes. This is all highlighted at the beginning of the book. WARNING! I will try not to give too many spoilers, but there may be a few.

The book focuses on Bethany, who is in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend Trevor. He controls who she talks to and what they do on dates, and she has to provide updates on where she and who she is with at all times. Her only relief from her situation is talking to Zion949 on StudentDesk, an online forum for tutoring. Xion949 is aware of what she is going through and provides emotional support, even though he doesn’t know who she is. There is always a risk of meeting someone you speak to online in person but when she does, he helps her gain the strength to get out of her situation and heal from the gaslighting and emotional abuse she’s suffered.

This book is not the typical YA romance, it’s so different and so well written that I just couldn’t and didn’t want to stop reading. It’s quickly paced and everything is from Beth’s perspective and as I read, I felt every emotion that she went through dealing with Trevor, and even her relief when she finds a resolution to her situation. Connected is a book that I split in three parts when thinking about how to summarise it: conflict, resolution and Beth’s healing process. The only issue I had was when Xion949’s identity was revealed earlier than I expected and I wondered how the rest of the book would carry on, but I thought it following a grieving structure. I loved this, and it was part of the reason I finished this book so quickly. The use of the epilogue to provide the reader with a satisfying conclusion and a brief description of how Beth was coping after her trauma was probably one of my favourite parts of the book.

I thought Connected was very character-driven as the tone and pace really starts to speed up when Beth begins to get her life back and breaks up with Trevor after a push from her friends and Kevin. Beth seemed to gain her confidence from other characters after Trevor, and even starts to get her life and freedom back that she had previously lost. I liked how her parents dealt with the situation and rather focusing on Beth breaking the rules, they focused on how to stop it from happening again and keeping her safe. I feel that not a lot of YA romance does this, which made this book really stand out for me. Kevin was also a character that made me want to keep reading, and even though I predicted that he was Xion949, I was not disappointed because of his friendship and then relationship with Beth.

I think it’s also important to point out the representation of mental health within the book through Beth’s anxiety and self-doubt and Trevor’s anger management issues and paranoia. I enjoy the topic of mental health in YA fiction, and I really enjoyed this theme within the narrative as it demonstrates that there isn’t a cure but there are coping mechanisms that can be used. It is a sensitive subject that is handled very well in the narrative.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, the characters and the themes and am so glad I was given an ARC by the author. I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys YA romance, but warn them of the sensitive subject matter in case they find it triggering. I also read this while listening to Taylor Swift’s Begin Again, which really reminded me of Beth and Kevin’s relationship after everything they go through.

Don't let the cute-sy cover of Connected fool you; there's some pretty heavy topics covered inside. At the start of the book, Bethany, the POV character, is in an abusive relationship and things get pretty tense and scary many times. Perhaps the worst is seeing all the excuses that Bethany makes for her boyfriend Trevor's behavior and the ways she's able to justify staying with him (she loves him, he can be so sweet, she's "put so much into" this relationship and doesn't want to throw it away...) because, yikes, you can see why she might be thinking those things at the same time that you're screaming, No! Get away from him, NOW! at her. For these reasons, I really wish the author had put a note at the end of the book about where to go for help (https://www.thehotline.org/ is one place to start) for anyone who might be in a similar situation, now or in the future.

The adorable cover art is 100% reflective of the new relationship Bethany discovers during the course of the book, though--Kevin is a much better example of a YA romance-worthy boyfriend. (Plus, they "meet" online, so that is definitely Beth and Kevin depicted on the cover.) Once their rocky start is over and they settle into a last year of high school-worthy romance together, Beth is finally able to see what it should feel like to be in a healthy relationship, and the difference is stark.

But of course Trevor's not ready to let her go, and more bad relationship drama ensues. Overall the author dealt with this part fairly well--Trevor eventually becomes a behind-the-scenes villain, though, and the resolution of her problems with him is reached rather quickly (efficiently, and in the right way, but--rushed). Bethany eventually gets counseling, which is fantastic, but I'm honestly surprised she was able to deal with things as well as she was before that point. I kind of wished that part hadn't been so glossed over.

Still, this was a quick read and fairly entertaining. For those looking for a book for YA readers, there is a small amount of drug use and some sex (somewhat on the page, but neither detailed nor graphic) and a conversation or two about healthy relationships and what to do in situations like Bethany's would be a good idea.

Rating: 4 stars / B+

Bethany Rollins fell hard for the charming Trevor Wade who would take control of her life through his practiced manipulation. At first showing her off like a trophy, after 3 months of dating he now flew into a rage when someone looked “too long” at “his possession”, followed up later by a mood change and an apology along with an expression of loving her so much. She believed him each time. He demanded to always know where she was and who she was with. He made her delete phone numbers of any guys listed in her contact list. She thought for sure she could get him over this mistrust. Instead, she was afraid to go out in public because she never knew when he would go into a rage. The only good thing was that eventually she realized in some part of her mind that she was losing her own identity and needed to get out of the relationship. And her first step was to contact someone who could help.

She logged onto StudentDesk, actually an online tutoring website. She had initially joined as an art history tutor. A chat box came up and Xion949, a boy she never met, greeted her. He had been the first one she helped and he passed his final. The second time, he just needed someone to talk to when his parents divorced. Since then, they became best friends and he empowered her to make the difficult choices she will be faced with.

Xion949 knew all about Trevor since Bethany talked with him about her problems and they worked them out together. But he invited her to a football game and offered to reveal his jersey number so they could meet in person. She trusts him completely. But would meeting him in person destroy their friendship? She never wanted to lose that. But she was afraid of what would happen when he was no longer a mystery.

It’s really frightening to see how someone can be brought under the control and manipulation of another. It’s so subtle at times that the victim doesn’t realize what is going on. That part is not fiction, and I think it is helpful to raise awareness like this and know there is help in breaking free. Trevor was also dangerous in leading Bethany to drugs and establishing isolation from friends and family. That guy is just plain toxic! Will Bethany be able to get away from Trevor? Will he harm her in the process? Or will her secret hero be there to keep her safe?

I really enjoyed this.
It comes with trigger warnings due to certain situations containing emotional and physically abuse, but it's more light hearted about the situations. It doesn't go too much into depth and although there is some drug use too it isn't too over powering.
Bethany reminded me a little of my younger self, with obviously some differences. I personally connected to the book! *pun possibly intended*. I enjoyed how she didn't allow the relationship she had with one person to affect the ones she had with other people.
It reminds you that when something is wrong and you aren't comfortable in a situation, you should really listen to yourself. But it also shows how scared you can be in situations due to the unknown of what could happen.
With Beth seeing the difference in Trevor it became difficult for her to see whether he was being genuine or if he just wanted her so he could have fun and know that she would stay with him no matter what.
I bookmarked the page where Beth found out that Xion was Kevin! I almost welled up. I was genuinely happy but you seem to get the feeling that its him! I was so tense. Every page was me questioning if it was him or not ! And when it said it was I was so happy.
I'm happy that Kevin was so gentle toward Beth. He approached her differently. Respectfully. Showed her that no two people are the same. And I really felt that.
I didn't want this book to end. I had a tough first few days reading it as I didn't have much time, but tonight I've completed it within the last 3 hours and enjoyed every moment.
I'm utterly heartbroken that I don't know where he's taking her! But I am so happy it ended with "I trust you".
I am so eager for the next one !

Well done Rori, I can't wait for Reconnected!

When I read YA literature I'm not expecting to read what feels at times like kiddie porn. I get that younger generations want to read steamy scenes, but as an adult, it's rather uncomfortable to constantly read four or more pages in a row of underage teens having a passionate exchange leading to presumably sexual intercourse. "My lips were still a little swollen from being bitten and sucked the night before." It is overly disturbing because Ms. Pierce is a prolific, "visual" writer, despite her missing a few passive sentences throughout the book and a typo. This story deals with heavy, potentially triggering themes of physical violence, manipulation, narcissism, enabling, and more; however, it's handled well and I feel believably. I wish Ms. Pierce had delved more into the psychological games narcissists play like gaslighting. She touched on it, but too briefly in my opinion, although perhaps she chose to not make this a psychological thriller and more of a romance by doing so. Even so, I had to read other books in-between this one. I felt as if this author really grasps what it is like for a teenager and wrote a compelling story with 90% of the characters being underage teens. The book felt a bit dated at times and I'm not sure if that was by design (worrying about cellphone minutes in an age where most people have unlimited calls and texts, for example). This is a good book and I encourage teens to read it and hopefully learn from it. For this reason alone, I raise my ultimate score 1/2 point to 4 stars. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, which I am leaving willingly.

Content warning: Relationship violence (verbal, psychological/manipulative, physical), sexual content

Review:
Xion is the absolute best person on the planet. I love love love him! He is so kind and sweet and honest and open and… ugh. Dream boy (sorry hubby). Bethany (or Dali.art) is the epitome of someone who is in an abusive relationship (F* Trevor). She is terrified of rejection and attempts to explain away the abusive and manipulative behaviors, and wow they are manipulative. This portrayal is so important for this age range, especially in this genre. When I was Bethany’s age(ish), the closest to this type of interaction was Go Ask Alice which, while amazing, is so different.

There is fear laced through the appropriate parts and a (very) slow shift toward healing and I am all for it. Trauma is not ‘fixed’ instantly. It lasts for years upon years and really never goes away. Instead, it becomes a scar that slowly fades, still there but less impactful over time.

I cannot recommend enough. Those who have been abused and for those who know someone that has been abused, this story could be a lifeline. It says you are not alone. You are not to blame for someone else’s actions. You are strong and can get through this.

Bethany, a high school senior, is in love for the first time. She and her boyfriend, Trevor, have been together for almost a year and they are head over heels in love. But, Trevor has been acting more jealous lately, angry even, which leads Bethany to question their relationship. And, Bethany has a secret, an online crush who she talks to every night and confides in about her relationship troubles. What happens when her online crush wants to meet in person?

For her debut novel, Rori K. Pierce does not hold back in addressing some really important and necessary topics. In this "Cinderella Story" meets "You've Got Mail" story line, she addresses the issue of teen dating violence. I loved that she was able to write about such an important topic while not fetishizing or glorifying the topic. And, she does it all while crafting a young adult novel that keeps the reader engaged and invested.

I thought this was a cute read and I loved that it didn't shy away from the darker side of dating. I would've loved this even more if it would have been a feel good story where the girl doesn't need a guy to help her out of her situation. I understand the draw of the happy ending, but I would've loved for the happy ending to be Beth and her girlfriends!!

Overall, a cute YA novel with a well loved "online friends" to "real life loves" trope. I would recommend it for anyone interested in a cute, quick read.

This book has an amazing story and very good life lessons!

This book is about Xion949 and Dali.art a.k.a Beth; after a lot of chatting on the school's platform, Student Desk, whilst keeping their identities a secret from each other. However, Beth is currently stuck in a very toxic relationship and Xion949 manages to help her through the difficult times that Beth is going through, he constantly encourages her to dump Trevor. Although Xion949 is enamoured with Beth and wishes to know who she is, whilst Beth shares the same feelings towards Xion949 she is scared to take the leap. Will they keep their identities secret?

I was immediately captivated by the first few pages of the book! 'Connected' has a great plot, and very good life lessons, no joke! My most favourite quote was; "You won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. Some people like sweet tea. Some people like green tea. Some people don’t like tea at all." Little reminders that we have to keep in mind every day!

My rating- 3.5

Aren't we always trying to give our all to relationships because we think it's better to put more effort by adjusting somewhat in the present relationship rather than having to start everything fresh with someone else. In this process, we also tend to lose ourselves as we have been trying too hard for things to work and the other person in the relationship is least bothered about it and takes you for granted.

When Beth was talking to Xion on the student desk I was able to guess it correctly beforehand only who is Xion actually. I would say it was a nice read for me but a bit too cheesy at some parts.I liked how the author has tried to include some really important topics in a young adult story, potentially triggering topics like toxic relationships, gaslighting, and abuse. This book can be somewhat kind of helpful for a young person if we consider that perspective. If you want to have a cheesy read with some triggering topics, you should give this one a read.

2.5 stars, I round up.

Let me first say, this book wasn't for me. That being said the writing and the premise were great. I would definitely read another Rori K. Pierce book.

The characters were all stereotyped. The bad boyfriend was mentally abusive to the max. The main character was terribly "damsel in distress". And the love interest was all hero. There was no room for growth for anyone, the main character did manage to have some character development in the last 15% of the book.

The plot moves at a weird pace but it worked for the story. The high-school setting worked and it got the point across that even young people can end up in bad relationships.

Overall the book wasn't bad, just not for me and I would not recommend it.

I was given a copy of Connected for my honest review.

I just finished reading Connected and wow! This is story was very well written. The characters and plot are well thought out and executed.

While YA isn’t my typical genre, I was interested in the storyline and think this is a must read for teenagers and parents of teenagers.

Connected makes you aware of how mouldable the young mind is. How at a time, when young girls especially, are insecure with themselves, it is easy to fall prey to predators.

Miss Pierce makes you feel the anxiety, the worries and the depth of this the topic with her words. And she leaves you realizing that this can and does happen. There’s a difference between controlling obsession and love

Well worth the read

Quick Read with a Heavy Topic

Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2021
Connected is a quick and easy read but with some heavier subjects. It shines a much-needed light on some of the struggles teens go through that are rarely talked about. Beth's growth through her abuse was my favorite part because it was believable. Her mental torment and cycling thoughts are exactly what someone in her situation would have. Pierce really nailed Beth as an abuse sufferer and survivor.

A great, quick read. Highly recommend.

YA romance isn't my typical genre, but the story looked exactly like something my nieces would love, so I grabbed the ARC and decided to read it and see if it's something the three of them would enjoy. The characters are relatable to the age group, the storyline feels realistic, and I think it's something the audience will appreciate. I loved the characters and I plan on reading more books in the series as they're released.

I am well beyond the age group that this I think is the desired demographic for this YA story. Having said that, i really enjoyed CONNECTED Book 1 in "The Connected Series". This is one of those stories I didn't read the blurb and didn't really know what it was about so I was very surprised when it wasn't "bubblegum" YA. There are some very grown up topics that the MC experiences.

There is a lot of good in this story and the relationships that evolve from beginning to end.

I would recommend it to my younger cousins and older friends alike.

Wow! I thought it was well written and the attention to detail was great. Tough subject matter but a warning is placed in the book right before you start to read.
It felt real... often tough situations are glanced over when the main character meets someone new but I like that it didn’t take a back burner.

The story and characters kept evolving with each chapter and I appreciated that.
Definitely recommend reading Connected when it’s released in a few days.

This was a YA story with a very serious topic. I liked the story and the character building. I could understand why it was so hard for Bethany to break free of her toxic relationship. I did however feel that the ending was rushed. But I will definitely not hesitate to read another book by the author when one comes.
