Summary: In a world divided into two distinct groups, Tenly and Kalib are taking a chance at working for the Scarlets. Now Tenly wants to leave everything behind while Kalib is only there to protect her in anyway he can. There is more to the Cobalt Premire Workforce than Tenly or Kalib imagined. As the rebels seem to be ramping up against the Scarlets, Kalib finds himself right in the middle of the conflict. Tenly begins to question everything she has ever believed forcing her to take a stand. Stay out of the conflict, even though her position as a Cobalt will always put her in danger, or stand up for what she believes and those she loves.
This is a wonderful fast paced story and the fight has just begun.
This book takes us back to the beginning of the story and tells it from Kalib's point of view. It was slightly annoying the first 40 pages or so as he and Tenly were together so much, making much of it be almost exactly what I'd just read. It picks up with new information for most of the book until reaching almost to the end where they were together again. The timeline ends in exactly the same place as the previous book.
I did enjoy getting to know Kalib and learning more about the Alliance. It was interesting and engaging. I will honestly say there's a part of me which is still annoyed by having read a whole other book yet still being 'stuck' in the same place of the storyline.
I would recommend this for any adult who enjoys Sci-fi. There are no intimacy scenes, but there is mild language and varying degrees of violence. There are references to intimate violence which are not described but notably there is one scene in which a character describes their past at age 14 where they were kidnapped, assaulted and trafficked for two years. While the actual assault is not described, everything leading up to it and after it is.
I really enjoyed this. Jenetta Penner does something a little different in her second entry in The Illusion of Truth. I received an Audio version for review and what follows is my honest review.
Born into the Cobalts, Kalib and Tenly are the lowest rungs of society. While Tenly has worked hard to join the Cobalt Premier Workforce and Kalib is recruited as a cover as part of a cobalt revolutionary group. Tenly begrudges his placement in the program believing he doesn't deserve it. Regardless, he moves forward in the underground group and all the while focusing on making sure she is safe. The second book moves to Kalib's perspective and a new narrator. The narrator is perfect for Kalib using the proper emotions instead of just plain reading. I really liked seeing from Kalib as this sets The Illusion of Truth Apart from other YA Dystopian sagas.
Kalib’s viewpoint gave the story a whole new dimension. Not only was his perspective different, but there was so much more to learn due to his deeper involvement in the Alliance. I had to go back and reread parts of Collapsed in order to see some of the connections and I must say that I really appreciated the author’s attention to detail when it came to some of the shared scenes. The dialogue and movements were perfectly replicated.
And what could be more relevant than a story that balances the themes of social change with a deadly virus? However, I am a bit disappointed that this book didn’t satisfy my desire to learn about what is coming next in the story. Now I just have to impatiently await the release of Fractured.
This one overlaps the story in the first book of the series, so it's easy to play catch up if you haven't read it yet. However the story is also different, while events are the same more or less, the point of view is completely different. I loved getting Kalib's take on things, other characters were also more developped in this one because of the different narrator. Fast paced with intricate world building, I am hooked on this series.
Covers the same time span as the first book, this time from Kalib's point of view instead of Tenley's. I liked the different perspective, and knowing more about the bigger picture. Kalib seems quite a bit easier to like than Tenley for the most part. It's a good thing her story came first. Made it easier to understand her.
Penner does a fantastic job switching the second book in the series to Kalib’s point of view. It’s really interesting to see the story from his eyes and all the questions that we were presented with in book one (from Tenly’s point of view) are beginning to be answered. While books one and two, cover approximately the same amount of time and events, readers can look forward to book three in this series to see what happens next for this unique pair.
I enjoyed this sequel to Collapsed, which recounts the events in that book, but from Kalib’s point of view. We learn how he became involved in the Alliance, and see him grow into a more mature person, as the book goes along. One who will be an asset to the Alliance. I’m looking forward to seeing how that plays out in the next book. I received a free copy of this book, with no obligation.
The things we do for love. This book covers the same time frame as the first book, just from Kaleb’s point of view. Unlike Tenly, Kaleb left the Tenement fully aware of the Alliance. It is fascinating to see the same series of events from a completely different perspective and mindset. Loved it! Highly recommend!
Kalib... Just wow. I absolutely loved how book 2 focused on Kalib POV. That really made us readers learn more about the other heart to this series. The story flows & delivers on all aspects that matter. What a great addition to an amazing series. Book 3 can't come out soon enough!
The first book was so much better. I didn't really care for Kalib's perspective. I think combining book one and two would of had a better outcome. I already knew what was going to happen the entire book since it was the same thing as Tenly's story in the first. There was no surprises since this story was already told by Tenly.
Loved reading from Kalib's point of view. It's the same story as book one but then again it's not. You get a complete picture this way plus you meet and get to know other characters more intimately. It was fun, also, to experience all of Kalib's first time discoveries. Looking forward to the next book.
I really enjoyed reading Kalib's POV after reading Tenley's POV in the 1st book I had so many questions and my mind took off. Now reading everything in Kalib's POV questions were answered. Now I'm (not so) patiently waiting to see where the story leads and what will happen with Tenley and Kalib.
3.5/5 stars. Just like the first book, a slow plot from all the dystopian novels I've read. And kinda annoying I had to re read all the same events that happened but from a different point of view (kinda not that different tho).
This book has the same feel as book 1 with an alternative POV. While I breezed through it because most major plot points were already set, the alternate perspective did add some new details to be uncovered.
An amazing story that lets us in from Kaleb’s point of view. Everyone forgot that there were still humans. He leaves the Alliance and you go on a journey to see how he survives. Loved it.
Book 2 of this series was such a creative book. It tells the story of book 1, but from Kalib's point of view. It fills a lot of the gaps from book 1 and goes into a lot of what we dont understand from Tenly's limited understanding in the first book.
Shattered is book two in The Illusion of Truth series. Shattered is the same story as the first book Collapsed which is told from Tenly Hawkins's point of view whereas Shattered is told from Kalib Fisher’s point of view.
The world that Kalib and Tenly live in, is divided into two different societies, one is the Scarlets and the other is the Cobalts. Kalib and Tenly were born into the world of the Cobalts, the lowest rung of society.
Kalib knows that his best friend Tenly has studied long and hard to pass an exam to cross over into the Scarlets side of the world. Kalib doesn’t want to lose his best friend but he has not always followed all the rules as he has been too busy trying to protect everyone he loves.
On the day of the exam, Kalib decides to take the exam anyway as he wants to protect Tenly. He has no idea what he will find on the other side but will take his chances if it means keeping Tenly safe. But to his surprise, he passes along with Tenly.
Once on the other side, Tenly tries to keep her distance from Kalib as she is suspicious as to how he passed the exam with his record. Tenly no longer trust Kalib but I am not sure she knows who to trust now. But what Tenly doesn’t know is that Kalib will do whatever it takes to keep her safe.
But there is more going on in the Scarlets than either of them know and whatever they do may put their lives in peril. Will Kalib and Tenly learn to trust one another again? What is going on inside the walls of the Scarlets? Can Kalib protect Tenly? Will Kalib’s secrets be revealed?
I loved getting the story from Kalib’s point of view. I loved getting to know Kalib more and getting his side of the story. It made me love the world of The Illusion of Truth more than I would have thought possible.
Shattered was just as fast-paced as its predecessor Collapsed and just as secretive. It held on to its secrets revealing them slowly one at a time keeping me interested and wanting more the more I read until I had read the last page and even now I still would like more from this world.
We heard Tenly’s side after become a member of the Cobalt Premier Workforce in Collapsed book 1, now we hear what Kalib has gone through after going to his assignment in the Premier Workforce. His job and function to the scarlets have been very different than Tenly’s. Even through Tenly’s rejection and her implying that he cheated to get his spot, Kalib just can’t shake Tenly from him mind not to mention he promised her dad he would watch put for her.
This was a wonderful book that showed a different side of the same place and allowed the reader/listener to get the whole story before moving on. There is so much action and suspense that it will keep you up past your bedtime to find out what happens. I had the audio and took the long way to each destination so I could hear more. The narrator Darren Martens does a excellent job telling Kalib’s story that you forget that you aren’t actually listening to the character. This is a great clean series one that should not be missed.

It is fascinating to see the same series of events from a completely different perspective and mindset. Loved it! Highly recommend!
I love that we get the story now from Kalib's point of view! There is so much more that we needed to know from the first story and now we have both sides and a complete story line! Loved the book and can't wait to see what happens next with the Alliance. I voluntarily received and read an ARC for an honest review.
