Magic Emporium

Brought to Light

Rate this book
A hitman and a fae walk into a café…

Callum always gets the job done—whether he likes it or not—but this job isn’t like any other. The target’s too young, too pretty, and too appealing for comfort, and the clients are offering more threats than cash. And either the target poisoned his hot chocolate or he’s going crazy, because now magic stores and wizard-looking dudes are appearing out of nowhere. It’s really not Callum’s day.

Linden’s on the run, and the human realm’s a good place to hide from evil sorcerers who think Linden’s the answer to a prophecy. But his enemy has found a way to send a very human and very dangerous assassin after him—a man who could kill Linden with one hand. Linden should be terrified, but his knees go weak for all the wrong reasons.

When Linden’s family is taken hostage, spending the night with Callum ought to be the last thing on his mind, but Linden can’t resist the chance to fulfill his deepest fantasies before sacrificing his own life. Callum knows he should walk away—it’s not his fight. But the beautiful fae is under his skin and now protecting Linden and his family feels more important than his own survival. A human learning to feel. A fae learning to trust. Can two worlds merge into one true love?

Brought to Light is part of the Magic Emporium Series. Each book stands alone, but each one features an appearance by Marden’s Magic Emporium, a shop that can appear anywhere, but only once and only when someone’s in dire need. This book contains explicit scenes, a magic flashlight, a prophecy that doesn’t quite work out the way anyone expects, and a guaranteed HEA.

Really, the blurb says it all for this next installment in the Magic Emporium series!

Callum is a focused assassin for hire. His job doesn’t allow for his emotions to get in the way, especially annoyance at being cajoled into buying a worthless trinket from a Dumbledore look alike while scouting a mark. However, when Callum and his handler are basically threatened to take out said mark who couldn’t possibly harm a fly, Callum’s gut instinct makes him hesitate, putting both himself and the man he’s supposed to kill in even more danger.

Linden is a fae, and he’s unsuccessfully hiding in the human world from an evil sorcerer bent on killing him. When circumstance forces him to return home, Linden doesn’t expect Callum to follow, and he wonders should he dare trust a man who does murder for hire? Regardless, these two are complete opposites, a fact that only fuels the irresistible pull between them more. Linden is all sunshine and warmth which apparently, can make a cold blooded killer melt. Duh.

This is my first foray from this author and the writing is good! Just know there’s gonna be a simple progression from lust and attraction to falling in love to defeating the bad guy to having a bit of no communication and running away only to come back so they can live happily ever after forever and ever. Overall, Grayson delivers a good amount of world building bridging the stark differences between Callum and Linden and also provides some nice explicit for those who need to know.

Easy breezy reading if you need some paranormal fluff in your life. Enjoy!

Thanks to the author for a copy in exchange for an honest review !

That was a whole load of fun

I really love the way Eliot Grayson writes, her humour is right up my alley and the fast pacing of her narratives always work well.

This entry in the Magic Emporium shared world was so much fun.

An assassin finding out there's something not quite right about his latest contract, a jaunt through strange places and an enchanted cup of hot chocolate were just some of the excellent moments which had me smiling from start to finish.

I'd love more of this pair and the secondary characters deserve their own book too!

A hitman and a fae walk into a café… Uh, yes fucking please!

Another entertaining story by Eliot Grayson. Two different characters - one a more jaded hitman, the other a fae from another plane - find one another. At first it's at the Chipper Bean (café) and then down the rabbit hole of an otherworld labyrinth. There are Linden's best friends who join in, Oskar and Kaspar, one magical, the other brawn, also plenty of action, and add the age old romance question of does he/doesn't he love me? Shake together, and voila!, you have a very enjoyable, escapist tale with attitude.

Totally awesome!

This was a little bit of a slow starter, but once it clicked it was gangbusters all the way to the end. Loved, loved, loved the two MCs, both of them were multilayered and complex! Call um was my favorite even if I wanted too punch him repeatedly a few times. Just a lovely, intriguing and action packed thrill ride!

Not fond of the writing style, world building, or oppressive atmosphere. Sure, it had it's light moments and I'm sure the story will appeal to some. It's probably my least favorite thus far in the multi-author series Magic Emporium.

Loved this. Callum had one misson and he failed spetaculary at it and thank God for that. Learning a whole new world exists isn't easy but he rolled with the punches, so to speak. Linden was in a very bad situation, none of it being his fault and he was just trying to survive. They came together and even though their personalities are complete opposites, they just fit and I was here for it. Loved their story and loved seeing them together. I wouldn't a story about Oskar and Kaspar though ...

Engaging adventure perfectly balanced by 'Grumpy one soft for a sunshine one' trope.
I absolutely love how Eliot Grayson writes MCs with questionable moral - not your typical good guys. They are tough and ruthless but still extremely likable. And hitman Callum is no exception - I fall for him from the first chapter. Linden - a fae is adorable and sweet and Callum can't resist the attraction and ends up helping him against his better judgment. The story is fast paced, romance develops along with all the action and though attraction is there from the beginning it takes time for Callum and Linden to act on it. But when they go for it - it's hot 🔥 🔥 🔥
Also features: great secondary characters, dual 1st person POV, low angst and humor.

Nope.
This didn’t work for me.
I really enjoyed other books by this author, but this isn’t one of them.

The relationship development consists solely of two people falling in lust.
There isn’t enough world building.
And I didn’t buy any of it, neither the character set-up, nor the plot.

Callum never felt ’true’ as a cold, hard-ass assassin.
Linden never really did it for me.

Sorry, not for me.

This author seems rather hit-and-miss to me. If not for being a part of the Magic Emporium series, I probably never would've picked this up, and for an Author of the Month. The summary just doesn't interest me at all. (It helped that I got it for free.)

I honestly don't know what to say about this. I didn't really like Callum but I did appreciate that it's mostly through his POV to maybe help me understand his actions/thoughts more. Even if they were... silly at times. Some parts were huge letdowns but we'll not talk about those.

I liked Jesse and... Well, the side-characters in general more, really. Kaspar, Oskar (enjoyed his and Callum's understanding in the beginning), Lady Lisandra...

Maybe the story would've been better if told mostly through Linden's eyes instead after all. Maybe I'm biased since I prefer guns out of my fantasy stories (or not at all). Either way, this was a quick, easy read and I enjoyed it for the most part.

I can't remember ever reading Eliot Grayson before, but this was certainly a great first impression. Callum and Linden were the epitome of opposites attract: a rugged, battle weary, ruthless hitman and an innocent, soft fae (literally).
Their adventure was grabbing, their chemistry so real! This one left me with a better feeling than knight and day. I'd thought about leaving the series there at the time, given that the only connection between the books is the magic emporium, but right now I'm glad I didn't. And plenty excited for what's to come!

2023 review of slightly edited new edition: There are a few bits that, I don't know, tried too hard? But I still enjoyed this re-read. I'd forgotten just enough to make it fun.

2021 review:
I enjoyed this short novel because I enjoyed the characters and the juxtaposition of assassin and fairy. This author doesn't linger on details but never leaves you adrift, which is ideal fantasy for me. I'm not so happy with guns working i Fairie, but hey, not my call. And it isn't excessive, for an assassin. I really enjoyed Linden's friends, and Callum's, come to that. The ending is lovely.

I'm in loooveee!

My new bae is Callum and I absolutely adore him. The author wrote him in such a way that he made me smile all through the book. Stealthy and silent outward, but his inner voice was the one of a loud, grumpy, growling and bad mouthed bear. And, yes, an assassin. With little or no morals, Callum the first to warn you against searching for any good in him or for any hidden depths of his soul. He also thought himself cold and unfeeling and maybe he had been, at least until he met Linden.

One sunny smile from Linden and one look at his bright eyes and Callum's cold heart started to thaw. A dangerous situation after another and my hitman became the protector. He took the magic, strange creatures and realms in strides but I loved how the only wondrous part of his new reality was Linden. I just about melted seeing Callum held in the spellbinding web of everything Linden, from his hair to his lips and his complex personality. No longer jaded and unfeeling, Callum also proved there were indeed hidden depths to him. He was loyal and honest, brave, gentle and caring.

They were absolutely precious together, the stone faced assassin and the sunny fae. They saved each other, Callum literally after eliminating the threat to Linden's life and the latter by giving Callum a purpose, eventually even a home and happiness.

I know I almost made it seem like there weren't any other characters in the book lol. Callum is my favorite, I made that pretty obvious, but I loved Linden, too. The secondary characters, especially Linden's best friends, were delightful and definitely added color and entertainment to the story.

Brought to Light was such an amazing, fun adventure. With incredibly well detailed writing style that made me feel transported to the worlds our heroes traveled to, magic and laughter, suspense, charming characters and a swoon worthy romance, the story kept me enchanted from beginning to the end.

If you're looking for a book to make you happy, pick Brought to Light. But, fair warning: Callum IS MINE!

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.75 stars

Brought to Light is a contemporary fantasy that is part of the Magic Emporium collection. The books are written by a variety of authors and tied together by the existence of a magical shop that appears only once when someone is in dire need. The stories can be read as standalones, as the only connection is the appearance of the shop.

I liked the mix of contemporary and fantasy in this story and we spend time in both the human and fae realms. It gives us a chance to see both Linden and Callum in their elements, as well as watch the super competent Callum be a bit of a fish out of water as he tries to find his way in Linden’s realm. This isn’t a hugely expansive world in terms of world building, but I think Grayson sets the stage well enough to follow the magical elements of the story. I enjoyed the camaraderie between Linden and his best friends, as well as the way Callum slowly begins to fit in and forge a connection with them too.

Three books into this series and I am enjoying it immensely! This was a new author for me and I wasn't disappointed. Linden and Callum were a definite case of opposites attract... that is after Callum, who is an assassin, came to realize that he wasn't going to take the hit that was put out on Linden... and after John/Linden made Callum some magic "truth" hot chocolate... and after, well let's just say theirs was not an easy beginning to a relationship! Frankly, relationship might be overstating the issue, but somehow it all ends well! Lord only knows how because they certainly encountered one roadblock after another, in two realms, no less!

But, have no fear, good prevailed over evil, using some very advanced technology (I jest), and their HEA was achieved... what more could you ask for?

Fae-ly spectacular

After reading this incredible book, not only am I craving hot chocolate but also I've realized how very boring and ordinary my own flashlights are. "You can smile, and the sun comes out." I need more of the witty banter and yummy tension between grumpy, growly Callum, who meets the most interesting people, and cheerful, tenacious Linden, who really does remind me of sunshine. Their chemistry is outstanding and both of them are heroes in my eyes but for very different reasons that alas, I can't share unless you read the book, so wait are you waiting for! In fact, the entire cast of characters is awesome and I hope we see them again. An amazing book full of creepy, wondrous, unexpected magical adventures that will have me avoiding trees and crows for a while.

Callum sees a mysterious door and walks thru it where he is given an item that he will need. Callum is a hitman sent in to kill Linden, a fae. Linden is pure sunshine and Callum doesn’t understand why he has to kill him other than his life would be forfeit. Linden is in hiding. When another hitman is sent to kill Linden, Callum saves him. Linden runs but Callum follows and they both end up in another realm when Linden’s portal takes him to the wrong place. This was sooo good, seriously good! There’s action, adventure, and lots of snark!! I loved Linden’s best friends! I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received.

At one very dark point circa 2013, I thought I was done with paranormals. I'd obsessed over Twilight and many of its fellow vampire/werewolf books that were released as publishers jumped on that particular trend for years, but 2013 was around the time when every paranormal romance started to blur together and I just couldn't find it in myself to enjoy them anymore.

About 7 years later, a friend of mine who also adores M/M romance mentioned Eliot Grayson's The Alpha's Warlock to me.

"It's so good," she enthused over one of 2020's many FaceTime sessions. "There's magic and werewolves and it's hot and it's funny and it's so good .

I remained unconvinced. "I don't know. Paranormals aren't really my thing."

"Just read a chapter and see what you think."

So I read a chapter. And another. And then the whole book. And then Eliot Grayson's whole bibliography. And then I signed up for her ARC group because I needed more charming paranormal deliciousness in my world, so why not? And guess what, guys? Eliot Grayson has done it again with Brought to Light: she's made a paranormal cynic remember why they used to love the genre's magic.

Brought to Light is one book in a multi-authored project based around the idea of a Magic Emporium that appears when one is in need of it. Eliot Grayson's contribution to the series involves hitman Callum who is shocked to find himself in a world of supernatural power politics when all he'd been planning on doing was taking out his next mark and local barista, Linden.

I loved this book, guys. First of all, the world building was top-notch. We've seen Eliot Grayson do werewolves and shamans and we've seen her do them well, but I honestly think the world of the fae is one of her most richly evocative yet. I wanted to live in these pages.

Callum and Linden were fully-realised characters and I loved watching them fail miserably at battling their attraction to each other from the start. As always, the side characters were also unbelievably charming and I would honestly read an entire book about Linden's hometown pals, Kaspar and Oskar.

My only gripe is that I wish we'd gotten to see more of Callum and Linden at the end, but is it really fair for my only "criticism" of the book to be that I wanted more of it? Probably not. Seriously though, I did not want to let Callum, Linden, and the luscious world Eliot Grayson created go. If the rest of the Magic Emporium series is as enjoyable as this one, then readers have got a real treat in store.

Page 1. Seriously, page 1. That is how long it took me to get hooked on this book. I was like a caffeine addict ordering 6 espresso shots in the drive-thru line at Starbucks...or the Cannibal Bean, either way.

Callum is the assassin, hitman of our dreams. A snarky, grumpy, glass half-empty man who has been assigned his most-recent target, John… Now, what do you need to be a good assassin? Clearly, a gruff personality with questionable or no morals whatsoever. You need to be a good shot. Tall, muscular, and delicious to top it off. Callum is the assassin jackpot.

Meanwhile, John...aka Linden is a fae on the run. In another dimension. Because according to an evil sorcerer, Linden will be his downfall. And when fae are on the run, the best answer is to go to the human realm. Only if an assassin is after you, your cover is blown real quick.

After a real quick trip to a magic emporium (because who wouldn’t want to just browse one of those) for a flashlight? Callum finds himself teleporting through a tree with his target and suddenly on the run in the fae realm. And his target… is looking less like a target…

Eliot Grayson transports her readers into a uniquely magical world where all is not what appears and should not be taken at face value. Sorcerers, assassins, fae, and Marden’s Magic Emporium are brought together to create a light-hearted, comedic, fantasy, that is a must-read to get out of the January slump!

I read the first line of the precis and thought this might be a humorous book. It wasn't. Linden and Callum met when Callum went to assassinate Linden. I guess this is mostly an enemies to lovers book. A good story and I loved Oskar and Kasper.

Whenever I see an offering by Eliot Grayson pop up on Gay Romance Reviews I submit my request as fast as I can and pray I get the ARC lol. I squealed when I got this one because... who can resist the blurb? Callum is a badass hitman with a soft spot for his target Linden. Though we don't get the snarky banter we usually get with Eliot Grayson's other books, I loved Callum's "tough guy" protection of Linden once our hitman got with the program. And Linden isn't quite the delicate flower Callum thought. Linden knows he wants Callum... at least for a night before Linden meets his dire fate. With a quickly flowing plot, this book has all the adrenaline and steamy feels you've come to expect from Eliot Grayson. I only hope that maybe the other characters in the book will get their own book as well? *cough cough* I love the HEA for Callum and Linden, I just wish to read another HEA for his friends. Teehee.

Wow! I just love reading a book by Eliot Grayson and Brought into the Light from the Magic Emporium series was just so good. Although each book in this series is written by a different author, each one has a special quest, a wonderful couple with good friends, there are also fantastic creatures, magical realms and lots of adventure and of course romance. As I read this book from the very first page it drew me in, enchanting me as I read page after page, unable to stop till I read to the very last one, then giving very satisfied sigh knowing I had really fun time and enjoyed every minute I spent reading about Callum and Linden's adventure in the pages of this book.

What do a grumpy, snarky assassin, a sunny, helpless fae, a store that is more than what it seems, and two protective best friends have in common? It's this fantastic, marvelous, fast paced, action packed, magical, intriguing, fascinating, smoldering, delightful, poignant, and totally awesome tale. It had me hooked from the very first page, and I would definitely recommend getting it for yourself.

Callum is sent to kill Linden, unknowing that Linden knows that someone is trying to kill him. A visit to the Magic Emporium leaves Callum with a strange item that shouldn't work... It all gets weird and fun after that. I really enjoy these standalones but would love it if they interconnected more

Fun action packed urban fantasy. Human hitman and a fae on the run.
Well plotted with plenty of action. Callum is a morally ambiguous characters (he's a hit man, tbf) but the author works with and doesn't try to save him.
Looking forward to checking out other stories in this multi author series. And maybe Grayson could revisit this world for those 'non-cousins' to tell their story.

I liked Callum a lot but unfortunately, Linden remained rather flat to me. Even by the end, I didn't get the impression that Callum got to know him on a more than superficial basis.
Also, maybe my Fae-knowledge is lacking, but the true name thing is never explained, and Callum never learns Linden's true name either, which kind of weird, because the way it's presented makes it seem like it should be relevant.
