Okay-ish but I like this installment much more than the previous book. Shaun is more enjoyable to read and it was pleasant to see her more confident and sure of herself. I found the plot to be very cliché still especially the mafia aspect of the novel, it’s very predictable. The relationship between Shaun and Jozef was much better and I’m glad about the different POV from side characters, it did help building to the huge revelation. I’m not impressed with this series but I think it’s entertaining enough for me to pursue reading it.

There is no question that I am captivated and completely absorbed by this series of books.

A beautifully created masterpiece received additional layers of depth by its author.

Almost ten times, the second book foiled the first, and it is a major delight.

Nikita Slater manages to write the most beautiful and dramatic stories filled with vivid characters who are flawed but still human.

A lot of ground was covered in this installment concerning Shaun and Josef's relationships. Each character matures and sees things from a different perspective, they get to know each other better, and they realize how important they are to one another. Watching this unfold is such a joy and a pleasure.

Every corner of it held secrets and lies, but there were also sweet and intimate moments. There were moments when your heart pounded and jaw dropped as you experienced some tense encounters in the story as it progresses.

It was a quick-moving plot with a high level of pacing. I became more familiar with both characters due to this tale's dark, realistic quality, and in that way, had a better understanding of them both.

My heart is in the pit of my stomach as I read this book. I am so invested in these characters.

It is absolutely fantastic to have the full complete series, and I would strongly recommend it.

Good but….

Well Jozef couldn’t stay away from his Shaun and whether she wanted to admit it or not, she couldn’t stay away either.

I liked the drama of this book, especially all the family/mafia drama. What I didn’t love is Shaun. Hear me out, all her feelings are valid and understandable, but I think for a woman of 34 years old she came off as overly good and too naive at times. Yes she may not be from that world but come on. I understand her oath to heal but come on people are trying to kill you!

I still enjoyed the story overall but Shaun is driving me a little crazy.

The couple: Jozef and Shaun

Romance trope: mafia
Series: Sinner's Empire
Length: 364 pages

Plot: The story picks up right where Sin of Silence left off. Shaun was taken to the hospital and then goes back home to the United States. Jozef is taken to prison, and a year later, he is out and intent on finding Shaun. He does find her and kidnaps her again. Things are a little different this time though. Jozef needs to know who tried to kill Shaun before so that he can protect her. He's divested from his family and moved out. Shaun isn't as scared as she once was, now secure in Jozef's love. But they are not safe from danger, and that danger will come to find them once and for all.

Commentary: This installment saw Shaun start coming into her own. There's still some crying - I mean, going through the kidnapping all over again! But there's less crying and more standing up to Jozef in a way that makes him reconsider some of his decisions. And Fatima! The scene with all the tough guys trying to hide or back away from her at the club? Perfection. Truths are starting to come out about the Koba family and not everyone will make it out alive. Not everyone deserves to make it out alive.

Shaun and Jozef may have some major relationship obstacles, but his caring for her was not one of them. Shaun knew without a single doubt that Jozef loved her and would do almost anything for her. His devotion was beautiful, seductive and frightening in its intensity.

Jozef revolved around Shaun the way the earth revolved around the sun. He checked on her constantly, touched her when she was close and watched her surroundings like a hawk.

Oh Nikita I am absolutely in love with this series and A Silent Reckoning was over the top spectacular.
Jozef and Shaun's story continues in this series and it so much more than I expected and hoped for!
But now you have thrown in so many side stories with Saskia and Leeza. And Fatima has become a fixture in the story, and she is feisty and bold, now I know where Shaun gets it from.
This story makes the reader invested, interested and captivated
I whole heartedly recommend this story!

This is Book Two in the Sinner’s Empire series. Quick note – if you haven’t read the first book, Sin of Silence, you really need to start with that one because this isn’t a stand alone and the books have to be read in order as it’s a trilogy. Also, if you haven’t started the series yet, keep in mind there might be slight spoilers below as a result. I really enjoyed diving into Shaun and Jozef’s story in the first instalment, but A Silent Reckoning kicked it up to a whole other level and I’m going to go as far to say that it’s even better than the first book. There, I said it. It was that good. I’ll admit, I read the first part of this book pretty sure I had everything figured out and that it was a good but teensy bit predictable read. Geez, was I wrong. The second half in particular had figurative and literal bombs dropping all over the place that left me scrambling to try and put the pieces together as to what the heck had just happened. This book manages to fit a lot into it without seeming over the top. There’s a good dash of darker content, sexy times (including a couple of dirtier scenes), betrayal, death, intrigue and a good dose of you asking yourself what on earth is going to happen next.

Book Two picks up a year after the events of Sin of Silence. Jozef is in jail, ruling the roost as the prison’s king pin (naturally), pining for Shaun and counting down the days until he can pull strings and be released early. Shaun has returned to Canada with conflicted ideas pulling her this way and that. On the one hand, she misses Jozef terribly, but on the other, she’s coming to terms with what he did, her poisoning and trying to get her life back on track as a successful surgeon. Trigger warning – Shaun suffers from PTSD and panic attacks and while this doesn’t take over the story line, readers might like to be made aware of it beforehand (kudos to the author for mentioning it in her foreword, too). In an attempt to bring Jozef back into the fold, his uncle manages to get him his freedom early, but the former isn’t having a bar of it. He decides to make a break from the family and venture out on his own with his first stop being Canada (he literally walks out of prison, boards a private plane and a little bit of history repeats itself before Shaun is back in Prague). Yesssss!

This book spent a lot of time continuing to develop and build on Jozef and Shaun’s relationship. Don’t get me wrong, there was heaps of other page-turning stuff happening, but Book 2 had a slightly different feel to its predecessor and I really enjoyed it. Whereas Sin of Silence set the foundation for their relationship (how they met, the family dynamics and power play, etc.), A Silent Reckoning took more time delving into our couple’s unique situation and while it wasn’t always smooth sailing, there was an acceptance that they loved and needed each other. I loved it. I think some other authors would have dragged their coming together out more and chucked in angst just for sake of it making the story line predictable and run of the mill. Instead, Ms Slater chose to have them pick up at a different pace so it was more of a getting to know each other phase. It made great reading as the pair took the forefront along with everything else going on. The dynamic between Shaun and Jozef changed with the couple being on different footing, so to speak, and as a result, Shaun came into her own in the relationship as she played a more active and dominant role.

That’s not to say that this book had less going on. To be honest, the relationship side of things kind of lulled me into a false sense of security and I was pretty happy to go with the flow and enjoy the two main characters reconcile with the fact they needed each other. Nek minute…the book explodes and I spent the latter half of the book saying wtf all over the place lol. More on this in a bit. The author did a great job of retaining all the juicy character traits that I loved about Shaun and Jozef. She was intelligent, strong and focussed on her career while remaining compassionate and likeable. The author didn’t take the easy way out and have her adjusting to life as normal post-Jozef. Instead, it emphasised how she couldn’t leave the house at one stage and had needed therapy. Jozef was a tall, hot, dark drink of obsessive, possessive deliciousness that put Shaun first every time. Their relationship continued to steam up the pages and the continued use of sign language really worked for me again in this book.

Book Two adds in a few different points of view from secondary characters such as Jozef’s cousins Leeza and Saskia. I wasn’t sure where this was going but as the book progressed, it was a great addition, adding even more intrigue to the plot. Fatima, Shaun’s mother, takes a more active role and for all the cat lovers out there, myself included, Fitz the cat comes to Prague. The usual suspects from Book One are also scattered throughout. Parts of the story that I though would be dragged out, such as the infighting between the family, wasn’t the issue I thought it was and this book also offered a taste into Jozef’s passion: mercenary for hire. This was both unexpected and appreciated.

Overall, this book nailed it for me. Sure, a couple of parts I figured out for myself but there were a few fantastic twists and turns that I never would have picked, weren’t crazy over the top and kept me turning pages like there was no tomorrow. With the split in the Koba family, I thought a lot of the plot would revolve around this and while it certainly came into play, some characters stepped up to the plate and I didn’t know what was happening – not in a ‘I’m so confused’ way, I just didn’t see many of the plot points happening. It certainly gave me bang for my buck with the second half of the book leaving me on the edge of my seat. This ended up being a double-edged sword because while it was a fantastic read, I’m already chomping at the bit for the last book in the series. It was so good. How often do you get to say that after the second book in a series?

Nikita Slater has done it again! She writes the best mafia books and I’m excited to read the last one of this series. I love the trust and emotion of Shaun and Jozef’s relationship. This book picks up 1 year after the first one and it did not disappoint. I was enthralled from beginning to end and especially by the last couple of chapters. So much betrayal and action!

Wow, this was definitely better than first book. God damn, It kept me on my toes and I couldn't put it down.

Well, last books cliffhanger was pretty massive and it all started to quietly unravel. I loved how well things escalated, subtly and finally hitting a massive crescendo where nothing couldn't be fixed anymore. I loved also how author didn't spray rainbows over the situation but really took into consideration of Eastern European honor what stated no matter what, it needed to be reciprocated.

We also see how Shaun quietly overcomes her fears, how she slowly finds her way or tries. And I liked it was kept pretty real. I have to say, as a extremely independent woman, in times her behavior grated my nerves. I guess this is more North American thing where women desperately need to prove their worth and show how feminists they are. As a Eastern European woman we have learned from a young age that words don't mean shit. If you are successful, be one, don't tell anyone. So it was interesting to see how those two worlds found a way to be with each other.

Some secondary characters were given POV and I have to say I'm a bit confused about Leeza. Her enduring horrors for so long without doing nothing.

This builds off of the novella 'Sin of Silence', and holy heck, what a continuation. I can count on Nikita Slater to provide heroes that are completely bad@$$, cold and absolutely obsessed with their heroines in a "I will burn and salt the Earth after laying the heads of her enemies at her feet" degree. Jozef may be her most psychotic to date in regards to his heroine, Shaun.

There is such a strong theme in this book about family, loyalty, love and all the lengths and different ways the characters will go to in the name of those things. The twists, turns, and revelations had me whispering 'wtf?" so many times, I'm surprised I didn't wake my husband. The book ends on a jaw dropping scene that broke my heart and honestly makes me wonder what the heck is going to happen next. I kept swiping my kindle hoping that there was more and that it hadn't ended RIGHT THERE. Ugh. I need the next one NOW.

Arc

The second part of the trilogy

I was so nervous to start this book after the cliff of the first one, but I read it in one sitting: was that good and exciting.
The story begins a year later and I won't be a spoiler.
The book as a bit more slow then the first one, a lot of details and reading this I remember thinking that this part reminds me of Peter from Anna Zaires. Jozef is a mix of him, scary but protective of Shawn, sweet only with her, a mean person with everybody and I very calculate man.
Shaw was more undecided in this part, I know she love her job and mom but you have to be with you're man girl.
Didn't expect the cousins decision and I suspect who is Phantom 😈.
The suspans is killing me! I can wait to read the final book!
The writing is great!! Nikita is the best one to writing this books!! Thank you for the opportunity

This is the 2nd installment of the Sinner's Empire. I thought the first book was insane, the second one doesn't even compare. It's in a league of its own. I absolutely loved how Nikita divulged more family secrets and even let us see the perspective of other characters within the story. There were so many plot twists but it ties the story together so well. I absolutely love the love/hate relationship between Shaun and Jozef and the constant hurdles Shaun has to overcome with her "new" life and her relationships. I can't say enough about this book without giving away spoilers so you will just have to read it to find out. This book will not disappoint and if I could give it more than 5 stars I totally would. This book had me holding my kindle so tight my knuckles turned white. I laughed, felt the characters' pain, love for each other, steamy scenes, and action. This book checked off all the things I look for in a good book. Pick it up today, you won't be sorry!

This is the 2nd book of the trilogy. I enjoyed the first book but I think that this one is absolutely insanely good. The scene where Shaun's mother showed up in Josef's club to look for her daughter you realised from where Shaun has her strength and why she is such an incredible woman. Then the chapters told from Josef's cousins point of view and the story becomes even better as you can start to understand the dynamics with Koba family. I loved the twist in the story and I highly recommend to be read.

Damn, I thought Sin of Silence was good, but book 2 blew me away. I am leaving this review at 2:30am, as I just finished reading it. As with all of Ms. Slater books, never a dull moment, Over the Top Possessive Alphas and Strong Women. I must say Diogo from the Sanctuary Warlord Series is one of my favorite heroes of hers, but Josef is making a huge headway as a contender. Thanks for the great read Ms. Slater, my life as I know it is falling apart but this book kept me glued together for a few hours...Can't wait for Book 3.

Whew! That ending was so action packed my head was spinning. Another fantastic installment into this trilogy. And once again I am absolutely obsessed with Jozef and Shaun.

Jozef is still horrifying and has gotten even scarier. Every turn this man would be doing my head in, then every other chapter or so he would say something and I couldn’t help love him. ‘Living without her would be like living without his own heart.’ -Jozef Koba 🥹

Shaun is fantastic as always. And though I love my headstrong MC imma need my good sis to get with the program QUICKLY. Your cute little life as a doctor is over ma’am. Your do-gooder two shoes days are done for. Tap into your mafia wife energy NOW!!

I also found it funny how even though Shaun had nothing to do with this mafia war mess she was getting blamed for everything left and right. Every second some character was like “it’s all her fault the family is splitting apart.” Like hold awwn 🤨… Jozef is the one who kidnapped her while she was just minding her damn business. At every point she tried to escape and y’all would not let her. She then gets poisoned, almost killed, and goes back to her little life in Canada. She don’t even tell the police cause she just wants peace. Jozef kidnaps her AGAIN and brings her ass back. Yet somehow all these characters only had smoke for her. My good sis couldn’t catch a freaking break 😭.

I also loved the addition of Fatima and getting more in depth looks on Leeza and Saskia’s lives. Though sometimes I felt the book was getting too absorbed in background character POVs; like Nikolay’s vile nasty gutter ass for example (I do not like that hoe). This was especially prominent in the third act where I just wanted more of Jozef and Shaun, especially since they already spent most of the second act apart.

Overall I’m loving how this series is going and I’m very VERY excited to read book three. Jozef and Shaun and truly started to become one of my favorite couples ever.

Steamy and Action-Packed

This is the second book in the Sinner’s Empire Trilogy and to fully appreciate the story and the dynamics between the characters it is recommended you read the series in order.

After the shocking ending of the first instalment Sin of Silence, I was so grateful that I didn’t have to wait too long for its release. I enjoyed that this book jumped almost immediately back into the action, uniting the central couple Jozef and Shaun. I just love how the author manages to create two individuals that are so far apart when it comes to their personalities and world view, but at the same time are just so right for each other. It is this tension between them and how it plays out that kept me eagerly turning the pages.

Although the couple’s love for one another is a certainty, it is how Shaun in particular can adapt to life within Jozef’s criminal organisation that is hugely problematic. I loved how he strives to understand Shaun’s point of view and how she is resolute in rebuilding her sense of control as much as possible. Alongside the the development of their complex and often combustible relationship, the danger and brutality of Jozef’s chosen career is never far away. There are also a number of other plot lines involving key figures from their respective families which added to the depth and breadth of the central plot and impacted on it. I was also gripped throughout with the question of Shaun’s safety, now that she has been forced to return to Prague.

The pace of the book accelerates from an already fast start as these plot points play out. The read is not short on emotion and steam as well as action scenes, tear jerking moments and a number of unexpected revelations.

Highly recommended to lovers of Mafia romance. Please note a copy of this book was given to me by the author for a fair and honest review.

OMG, this story was sooooo goooood!

The twist and turns of this action-filled drama had my brain fried trying to keep up with what was going on. Jozef's love for Shaun was so deep for her, that he could not live without her in his life. As soon as he got out of prison, he headed straight to her. But her mother Fatima was just as feisty and was not going to let him get away with kidnaping her only child again. She realized that her baby and Jozef were totally in love with each other when she first saw them together.

This time around, Shaun was not a captive and had more control over what she would let Jozef get away with and made him understand why. He never knew how to really love a woman and be invested emotionally with her until Shaun came into his life. But she was still in danger. She was beginning to understand his world with the help of her bodyguard Karl. She was slowly adapting when the unthinkable happened. It is always the person closest to you who is always the betrayer. The betrayer started a war between Jozef and Kristoff that neither one could back down from. It was the mafia code. Now we see who is loyal to the family and why. One would die and it broke both of them to that understanding. One thing is for sure, Jozef would protect Shaun even to the death.

In this book, we find out who the betrayer is, but where did Leeza and Saskia go to? Who else is a traitor in the Guard Dog Security Company? Will the former family's feral dog root them all out in book 3? Are Fatima and Fritzy okay after the carnage? We still haven't seen the Phantom yet. I take it we will see her in book 3. It's a good thing I have book 3 already so I can delve into this mind-numbing drama.

Wow that ending!
A Silent Reckoning started off one year after the events in the last chapter of the previous book. In this book we get to explore more of Shaun and Jozef's relationship and the conflicts within the Koba family. Although we have many revelations here but some still remain mystery, eg. who killed Jozef's parents and who Phantom is, though I think I have a fair idea about who the latter is. The book started off a bit slow; somehow the most monologues felt like a long ramble and I tend to skip most until about halfway into the book where the story started to really pick up. We see how Shaun struggles with her moral compass but most of the time she just came off stupid, especially that time after the attack at the restaurant. Although I started off the book hating Jozef a bit because of the repeating kidnapped he did instead of rebuilding his relationship with Shaun differently, by the end of the book I really root for him. He's still ruthless, cunning but a bit more 'human', especially after that scene of him picking up the doctor after the explosion when he was on the mission. Hopefully he discover the mole in his team sooner in the final book. And Saskia, probably the best character in the whole trilogy. Love that exit she made. Kristoff's character was probably the most pitiful, he betray his adopted son for a wife that was probably betraying him for years. On to the final book now.

Nikita Slater is amazing at spinning a story about flawed characters coming together and making it work despite the odds against them. Jozef and Shaun are a unique couple who have dealt with issues from the start and come together in this book to find a way to sustain a relationship with each other.

In this unconventional love story, Shaun must learn how to deal with the violence of Jozef's world and find a way to protect herself while being involved with the ins and outs of the mafia. Jozef has never been in a proper relationship before so thinking that love can be a source of strength is difficult for him. However, love ends up motivating him like nothing else ever could.

"It’s your heart, he signed, his eyes glowing with possession. I will always keep it safe for you."

When there are certain forces working against them, Shaun and Jozef need to be stronger than ever to get through everything and live to fight another day. The twists and turns in this intriguing tale made me want to read more. I can't wait to read the last book of Shaun's and Jozef's story!

Suspenseful and thrilling story!

WOW! I absolutely loved the second book in this amazing series. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, sweating with anticipation of what would happen next. It’s suspenseful, thrilling, intense, passionate and filled with unbelievable twists and turns throughout. This is one hell of a rollercoaster ride.

Shaun and Josef have this undeniable connection that pulls them towards one another. And their sexual chemistry oozes off the pages and makes your toes curl with every touch and kiss. The emotions that these two bring out in us readers is either one of love or hate. The constant push and pull between them makes for such emotionally charged interactions that can go from 0 to 100 in an instant. I love these two characters and their passion for life, love and family.

This is a brilliantly written story with phenomenal characters that are complex, and a storyline that keeps us riveted to our seats completely captivated with everything going on and highly entertained right to the very shocking ending.

I can’t wait to read the last book in this series as I am sure it will be a complete shocker!

Wonderful story!!! This is part two of a previous book and part three is coming soon so if you hate cliffys put this book on your TBR list but it’s a MUST read.

It’s such an amazing in depth story about Jozef and Shaun our main characters. You get to go through a flash back of Jozef’s first sighting of her and from there you get to learn a lot about not only them and their intense love for each other but we also get to meet some others in the family and get to know their stories.

Let me tell you, just when you get comfortable in the story it all goes to heck and BOOM you can’t pick your nose up out of the book cause it’s action level pumps it up 10 more notches and you’re biting your nails and yelling at the book charters trying to keep up with all the insanity!!!!

It’s quite amazing.

To say the least. Read it you won’t be disappointed. If you never tried this author before start with part one first and even if you dive right in you won’t really be too lost. 10 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Great read

I enjoyed the second installment as it allowed us to dig deeper into Shaun’s psyche as we had a pretty good idea of who Yosef was in the first one. In this book he is evolving as well as her allowing them to maybe find common ground in the last book. To be fair I can already piece together the mystery but I don’t want to ruin the denouement for the other readers.
A few things were disappointing though. Yosef and Shaun didn’t seem to interacting as much in this book as they did in the first one.
I know that Shaun is weary of guns but I found it odd that she wasn’t taught more self defense.
I was disappointed to see that Yosef and more to the point his right hand haven’t worked out the family secrets. In particular that Leeza is leading a double life.
Karl’s death was really upsetting. First because he was so close to Ahaun but also because of the potential romance with Fatima.

The book needs an editor, because the grammar errors are visible in every chapter. Really basic and common grammar errors.

Set aside the grammar errors, the characterization (Jozef and Shaun) is very 2-dimensional. Nikita Slater likes to emphasize how kind Shaun is and how honorable she is to her Hippocratic oath, but that's it. She keeps telling the readers that Shaun is so kind through the eyes of Jozef, but there is no character growth for Shaun or Jozef. It's absolutely bland and basic.

Also, I find it very disturbing that Jozef talks about castrating a black man (a good antihero who simply protects his own sister). Because this is coming from a white author, I find this degrading and racially insensitive. Castrating a black man is rooted in racially charged symbolism, especially white supremacist ideals. Nikita Slater needs to learn how to write better toward black characters (especially token POC).
