The game is great. The rulebook is very pretty and fun BUT it's not a great rulebook.
This book needs some serious editing. The rules are hard to find, far too wordy and repetitive and basic and advanced rules are all mashed together in parts.
This would be a much more useful rulebook if the first (or second after the flavour / history) chapter just gave you all of the basic rules. Other elements could then follow in their own chapters. This would allow players to quickly get playing and learn as they go along.
It's not a great reference book either - finding the stats you need or deciding what you can do at different parts of the game seems to be split across different spaces.
This is still an outstanding game, no doubt, but the rulebook edit is just not well thought out - it's a bit of a mess.
This was a very well written rule book. The information is easy to digest and they do a great job of keeping all the relative information not only on the same page but in the same column. The back story of the game and the fluff is also very well written, entertaining, and humorous. Reading this has gotten me pumped to paint up these models and give this game a try.
Just different enough from the LRB era that there are so many small nuances to pick up on. I don't think the playtesting is anywhere close to the previous standard when the rules were open, but I appreciate that a more thorough rewrite was done compared to the 2016 edition.
An excellent game and an excellent new rulebook for the modern era. Packed with detail, well laid out and colourful, wonderful to see that the variety of rules changes are more or less just clarification. Huge number of teams available. Class act 👍
Updated rulesbook. Contains some extra lore and stories on the side. They seem to have nerfed my favourite faction a bit (fair enough, they were OP). As always with GW products the artwork is well done and production values high, but this is a decidedly niche item and only worth the upgrade if you do actually play the game and want the latest ruleset
Is it possible to write a great rulebook that will read as pleasantly as a novel? Games Workshop knows excactly how to do it!
British developers managed to get us used to the great quality of their board games as well as all components related to them. It's no different with "The Official Rules"! The book was made of great materials, bound in a hard cover and printed on glossy, colored paper. It is intended not only to be read once, but to survive heavy exploitation so that we can look at it and, if necessary, verify the rules of the game.
Of course what Games Workshop is known for is hundreds of wonderfully designed illustrations from the game world. The whole thing was written in such a way that after reading this relatively extensive book (as for the rules of a board game), everyone is going to understnd the rules and was ready to sit down to the game. Fortunately, this is not just bare information, but a lot of interesting descriptions, stories of individual players or descriptions of the Warhammer world. We are introduced to various aspects of the game gradually and in a fun way thanks to a lot of funny inserts and sections.
To be completely honest, I've never come across such well-designed and written rules of the game! I guarantee you won't be disappointed, and everyone who is considering if Blood Bowl is right for them will know the answer after reading this book.
