"The greatest enemy of the trader is fear. He who is afraid loses..."

Tradingpsychologie was an interesting look into the topic. I stumbled upon this book by chance, from a mention in this article. The article says: "Many readers and reviewers commented that it was the best book on the subject that they had ever read or that it was the first that was of any real use..."

Author Norman Welz is a trading psychologist/trader coach and trainer, with over 12 years experience. He is the owner of a private practice for psychotherapy in Hamburg, the employee advisor at the renowned Fürstenberg Institute Hamburg, and the developer of the bettermind coaching program for traders.

Norman Welz:

I should note right up front that reading this one was a bit of a challenge... I couldn't find an English language copy of it, so I had to rely on translation software. Although the general message came across, I think a fair bit may have been lost in that translation, sadly.

Becoming a consistently profitable trader on the markets is not easy, by any stretch of the definition. If you've ever made a foray into stock trading, then you'll know what I'm talking about. It is a multi-tiered challenge with many formidable barriers to entry.

First, you'll need enough money to trade with, as well as to sustain yourself for your learning journey, which could take years. Yes, years.
Then you'll need to figure to what the hell is going on with the moving line. You'll need to learn to read technicals, and understand chart patterns.
Once you've done that, you'll need to develop a reliable system to harvest the money that the moving line produces. You'll need to hammer down your buy and sell points.
If you're still in the game at this point, you'll then have to learn to contextualize your system within the market conditions of the time you are trading.
Last, but most definitely not least - you'll need to win the battle within yourself. The battle against your emotions; fear, greed, self-doubt, and negativity.

Want to become a rock star trader? Good luck to you. It's definitely not easy. Not impossible, but not easy. If it were easy, we'd all be driving Ferraris, and sipping Margaritas on the beach, says Wetz (or something to that effect).

Wetz says (and I definitely agree with him) that fighting the battle within is the hardest aspect of trading. In a theme common to almost all of the books on high performance, excellence, and mastery I've read; mindset is everything. It alone is often the sole deciding factor on who will succeed, and who will fail. Trading stocks is no different in this regard. Even with the best proven system in the world, you will not succeed if your mindset is not right.

This book takes an in-depth look at most of the pitfalls of short-term trading, and the mindset you'll need to develop to succeed in this game. Wetz covers a few case studies here, to relate his points to the reader.

He also discusses some general psychology; mapping the common traps that our evolutionary wiring has laid for us. Emotions - specifically fear - are discussed at length here.

***************************

I did enjoy this one, even with its garbled translation. If you are a native speaker of German, then you'll be in luck.
